o know yourself is to know the world; to know where you fit into the
world; to know how little can you give to it; to know how much it can
give to you.
For years, The Seagull has searched the realms of the vast horizon in
search for stories that will inspire every Lacsonian. Now, it’s time to pay
back the institution.

The stories in this issue come from Lacsonians who have faced the
fiercest tides yet arrived at the port called SUCCESS with hearts full of
undying hopes. They are your instructors, your friends, or even the person
featured on the 20th page could be sitting right next to you. Their stories;
your story; our story - they’re in here.
Read and get inspired.
Editor’s Note
My omega (My last).
I couldn’t explain how grateful and thankful I am to have my Seagull family
- PROUD indeed. Despite the fact that we are in a maritime institution offering
not-so-journalism-related-courses, we still managed to excel in such field and that makes me even PROUDER than before. It also matters every time we
hear and receive messages showing compliments and appreciation of our
printed outputs, it really does - that makes me the PROUDEST.
This issue is a reflection of how every Lacsonian lives. Articles herewith
are proofs of how John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University made
her trademark as the first maritime university in the country and one of
the world’s suppliers of world-class seafarers. Basically, it is the story of
JBLFMU-Molo, it is the tale of our very own community.
Struggles and downfalls in the Seagull’s flights are inevitable. But take note:
she will never get tired of flapping her wings again and again and will always
soar at her highest. Rest assured that the legacy of our campus publication
from the very beginning will continue to grow in a wider perspective under the
skillful hands and imaginative minds of the staff and the advisers. Go through
the pages. This is for you, Lacsonians! Read, Rock, and Roll!

Wow.
oy
de V. Dedor
by Mdpn. Ja
I
’ve been into a lot of Sunday schools,
church masses and the likes ever
since I was a puny grade schooler
up to the present that I have grown into
a matured individual (I think). I have also
read a lot of scriptures and stories of pure
faith coming from the Holy Bible. And then
I thought, the Holy Bible never mentioned
the word “internet” or “social media”.
But I am strongly convinced that we are
God’s favorite creation for the heavens
have blessed us with the World Wide Web
and Mark Zuckerberg’s money-making
machine (Oh, thank the heavens for
that!). It [internet] has brought us to vast
and colorful platforms our grandfathers
never thought we would reach back in
their olden days of jukeboxes and handwritten love letters. But did the internet
bring us to higher platforms for us to put
ourselves down into the bowels of infantile
grammar usage? I say the internet has
turned the human race into ineffective
communicators.
Do I still need to give you a concrete
example? Nah, look at your e-mails. That’s
one. Look at your cell phone messages.

Such ar
Very read.
That’s two. Look at your Facebook posts.
Kabooom and three points for me! But if
that isn’t enough to convince you of what
my point here is, then may I suggest, you
go to Images.google.com and enter the
keyword “Doge”. Wow. Such command.
Very search. Much googles. And there it
is, your heavy dose of low-grade humor
mixed with ill-used grammar topped with
the soul-piercing look from the dog. (But
mistake me not, I love the Doge meme* so
much that I used it to relieve me from the
stresses given by the academe.)
The Doge (I pronounce it as “dogeh”) is an internet meme that became
widely-loved and was popularized last
2013. The meme typically consists of
a picture of a Shiba Inu dog with texts
written in colourful Comic Sans MS in the
foreground. Originating from a Tumblr blog
“Shiba Confessions”, the Doge meme
skyrocketed itself from Google’s mostsearched terms last October 2013. In just
a month, the Doge meme has become
widespread over the internet. Wow. Very
amaze. Much famous. Such internet love.
Wow.
But the meme’s popularity didn’t stop
in there. The much-loved Doge meme
ranked #12 on MTV’s list of “50 Things
Pop Culture Had Us Giving Thanks For
2013”. Last December 2013, Doge meme
was named “Top Meme” of 2013 by
Knowyourmeme.com. Very achieve. Much
clap. So oscars. Wow. Doge cri evritiem.
But during the last quarter of 2013,
Sean Banks of Libertyville, Illinois
shocked the meme world with his petition
of banning the Doge meme all over the
United States of America for spreading
and democratizing the use of a very
questionable human grammar.It may have
been just a simple internet meme yet it
has raised some eyebrows because of
its negative effects to the easily-adapting
generation to which I myself, also belong.
Much accuse. Not wow. Sendpie will not
notice. Such sad.
Yes, it seems that it is a major offense
especially to the scholarly populace and
to the rest of the populace itself. The
Doge meme indeed showcases the use
of infantile grammar in all fairness. The
grammar usage to which the Doge meme
FEATURE
has been famous of, to some, is ill-fitted
for the current generation of swags and
YOLO’s which will eventually give rise to
a generation full of grammar and spelling
deficiencies. That is undeniably imminent.
Not wow. Very judge. Such true. Much not
good generation.
But I believe that the main purpose
of the meme’s creator is simply to deliver
laughs and smiles even with the simplest
of words and images. As to the “funny”
grammar, the nationality of the creator of
the meme must have played a big role to
the crooked grammar and that we must
always bear in mind that not all races are
fluent to the widely-accepted universal
language. There is so much to look at the
meme itself other than its grammar. (Yes, I
am a proud pro-Doge!)
The petition, as I and the other Dogelovers believe, will be obsolete in no time if,
by chance, approved by the US Congress.
Why? Why don’t you try stopping the entire
netizens from spreading something? If you
can do that, then you can delight yourself
to the applause of my feet.
I am certainly aware that there had
been a lot of campus publications that
have already dealt on the effects of
social media to the way most people
communicate. But this article deals with
something so soundless that the topic
becomes gradually ignored by the majority.
The effects are saddening, I must say. But
the extent to which the negative effects of
the social media relies on several factors:
a. The amount of exposure to social media
among individuals, b.) The widespread
education on responsible internet use and
c.) The actions taken by the concerned
bodies (e.g. Government bodies, Local
groups, Families etc.) on internet abuse.
And of course, the responsible use of
social media depends on US, the netizens,
who profess that life without internet is like
life back when the Stonehenge was being
built.
As to being effective communicators
who are well-versed with all the parts of
a business letter, I can say that practice
comes with it. Discipline as well. I can
pretty much tell you that I love Doge
meme, yet I can definitely write a neat and
effective business letter with little flaws in
it. After all, I am the one who is in control
of my social media experience and YOU
should be, too. Wow. Very conviction.
Such truth. Very wow.
*Meme - A meme is “an idea, behavior, or
style that spreads from person to person within
a culture. An Internet meme can take the form
of an image, hyperlink, video, picture, website,
or hashtag. It can be just a word or phrase,
including an intentional misspelling.

t took time for John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU), formerly Iloilo Maritime Academy (IMA),
to reach the peak of its success making her name as a top-caliber producer of globally competitive seafarers. The
three units of JBLF-System were accredited by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities-Commission
on Accreditation (PACU-COA); JBLFMU-Molo and JBLFMU-Arevalo were the two units which were granted Level
IV accredited statuses for BS in Marine Engineering and BS in Maritime Transportation respectively, and Level III
accredited status for BS in Maritime Transportation and BS in Marine Engineering of JBLCF-Bacolod. The system was
also accredited by Bureau Veritas (BV) because of its Quality Assurance System that every maritime institution in the
world should have.
After a series of decades in striving for prominence, she is now one of the leading maritime institutions offering high
quality maritime education and training accepted worldwide. Proving its superiority in the field of maritime services, she
has gained the trust and confidence of numerous shipping companies and manning agencies by providing them with
competent and skilled graduates.
Below are the current and active companies tied-up with JBLF – System.

TEACHERS & STUDENTS
C
THE
PRETENTIOUS
HOLLYWOOD
CELEBRITIES
When students come late in their class, they fail to get the attendance and it’s their fault. But when
teachers come late in their class for an hour and the students have already left the room, again, it’s
the students’ fault. So where’s justice? Unlike any other universities, our school does not follow a 15
or 20-minute waiting time if the teachers fail to report. But in our case, we have to stay in the room for
the whole period whether the instructor reports or not. If that is your only class in the morning or in the
afternoon, oh dude, then it’s the third damn! “A” for effort though.
To the students, try to secure the cellphone numbers of your instructors (If they allow) so that you
can communicate with them when the situation calls for it. To the instructors, you may leave a message or
note on the board if you happen to cancel your classes. The students could have used your class’ time
for other important matters.
THE
DOOM
BRINGER
No matter how bright the day is, it would always be a nightmare for students who have terror teachers.
They are your instructors who barely hold classes but give exams as if you’ve tackled the whole lesson for
the semester then blame you for getting a low score. They are the type of instructors who don’t provide
handouts or references but give surprise quizzes like no mercy at all. “Okay class, get 1 whole sheet of
pad paper and answer these questions for 20 minutes”. This statement makes the fourth damn! Like what
the hell?
To the students, life is a battlefield (say what?). We must always come to school prepared. You aren’t
going to lose anything if you’ll make yourself ready to any untoward incidents like surprise quizzes or
assessments (Without having classes and handouts? You’re a genius man!). To the instructors, try to
reflect. Your students need your help by imparting them your knowledge on a certain field - those will be
their tickets to their future. Teachers ought to teach and students ought to study.
THE
PRIDE
CHICKEN
LOVER
Imagine a day with a great weather and you are in a good mood heading to school. You bestow your
best smiles to everybody that you get along with. From a distance, you see an instructor coming. “Good
morning ma’am! (With a hand salute)”. Damn! No response nor reaction from her at all. But then you let
it pass considering that she hasn’t noticed you even though there were only two of you in the hallway.
Anyway, another instructor is approaching and then you fixed yourself. “Good morning sir! (With a hand
salute again)”. Second damn! It was the same cool story bro. Now tell me, are you invisible or what?
To the students, being polite to the instructors is a noble trait. Keep it up even if they show no care
because that is what a Lacsonian should be. To the instructors, it’s a mutual feeling when a teacher is
discussing and nobody cares. Try to smile sometimes. It will make you even 15 times younger (there you
tried). Your simple response may it be in the form of smiling or nodding can inspire your students. It’s not
that hard to smile, right?
THE OSCARS
NOMINEES IN
THE “BETTER
LATE THAN
NEVER” MOVIE
onflicts arising between the students and the instructors are certain. In a problem, either of the two is right or wrong. But
there are certain situations wherein the students are right over the teachers. Most students would say that they were just
mere students and they hate to argue with their teachers. Here, take a look.
Have you already encountered instructors who could not accept criticisms, often disagree with the
truth, and could not swallow their pride? Yes, they are some of your teachers who don’t know how to
accept their mistakes and show dominance and aggressiveness whenever someone corrects him in his
or her class (which is very obvious that they are wrong). And because they are not willing to learn from
others and would not let go of their pride, this calls for the fifth, sixth, and seventh damn! Learning is a
never ending process and everyone should understand this.
To the students, don’t just say that you are only a student - every opinion of yours is accepted and
some are important. And once you try to correct an instructor, be sure that you’ll state it in a gentle and
inoffensive manner. To the instructors, be capable not only in swallowing food and drinks but also your
pride. If you know that you’re wrong, then you have to say “I stand corrected”. But if you’re not, then try
to explain.
These are the common scenarios that we have encountered in school. Take note: we are not
generalizing - some may be guilty, some are not. If you’re on the guilty corner, then embrace change.

Lacsonians
Circling
the
Globe
(Graduates in their voyage to triumph)
by Aime Hope P. Balico and Edelyn F. Galele
D
ubbed as the pioneer maritime
institution in the country, John
B. Lacson Foundation Maritime
University-Molo became one of the top
suppliers of globally competitive seafarers
and efficient manpower in fields related to
maritime professions. Indeed, graduates
equipped with quality education, skills
and trainings, value-oriented ethics are
qualified and credible enough to land
jobs- conquering not only the vast oceans
and wide seas but also the market and
trade around the world.
To glance back into history, the
university, formerly John B. Lacson
Colleges
Foundation
(JBLCF-Molo),
offered only two programs: the Bachelor
of Science in Marine Engineering
(BSMarE) and Bachelor of Science in
Customs Administration (BSCA) and it
was in the new millennium that Bachelor
of Science in Cruise Ship Management
(BSCSM), Bachelor of Science in
Tourism (BST), Bachelor of Science in
Maritime Information Technology (BSMIT)
and Bachelor of Science in Business
Administration (BSBA) were established.
Thus, the continuous increase in number
of enrollees in each of the academic
programs per school year manifests
the 66 years of providing high standard

maritime education propelled for its
pursuit of excellence.
All exemplary for how far they’ve gone
in their fields, graduates representing their
programs attested the fruitful return of their
investments - the heart and passion in
their endeavors, the open-mindedness to
the complexity of their chosen profession,
the fighting spirit fueled with excessive
drive to persevere whatever it takes and
especially the trust bestowed to this
institution.
People with high need to achieve thus
achieve more than those with low need
and with no need at all. The Achiever,
the motivation theory of McClelland is
just another quoted sentence that mirrors
the single word - driven. These people
once belonged to a circle of norms, the
typical students you see in our university
but because they chose to exceed from
being just the mediocre, they stood out.
Opportunities did not seek for them; they
sought after them - an officer in a college
department club, a working student and
a member of university’s organizations
that render scholarships. Although they’re
obliged to spend more time and effort,
it was never an excuse for them but a
challenge to remain on top which bridged
them nearer to their dreams.
Success derives us to a definition
synonymous to achievements. Exclude
these individuals, it’s not merely the
money and career at stake but for them,
it’s how you make the most out of what you
have acquired and perceived the moment
you set your last step out of the university’s
gates.
Lacsonians, as students and as
individuals, are crafted to be well-rounded
both in theoretical and practical aspects.
Also, the core values and discipline
inculcated in a span of years within the
folds of this maritime institution shaped
them not only to be tough but also to be
courageous to take risks. No doubt, a lot
have been triumphant in their preferred
areas to excel in, paving their way across
the map.
Therefore, are you a certified TRUE
BLOODED Lacsonian? Be one of those
who leave traces of their own legacy. So
pop your bubbles and seize your dreams
because success is given only to those
who are worthy of it. Sail through the
surging oceans of adversities, let the
billows of waves toss you up and down.
But as a Lacsonian molded for life,
decline from sinking. Remember, we are
the captain of our own ship - our life to
maneuver.

I’ve had my humble start in the four corners of JBLFMU.
I was once a working student in the clinic, emerged as a
model student, then became an academic scholar. Thus, I
would like to emphasize that poverty is not a hindrance to
success. My principle in life is, “Behind the clouds of my
sacrifices, lie the realities of my golden dreams. I work for
a noble purpose to succeed, because the true gauge of
success is being the best in what I do, and letting God run
the rest.”
After I graduated, I was employed in NYK-Fil Ship Mgt.
Inc. I started as a catering boy onboard an international
vessel for seven months. For a short span of time, I was
promoted as a chef. Recently, my company had offered me
to teach and become an assessor. And now, with a humble
heart, I am the youngest certified TESDA national assessor
likewise an institutional assessor in my company.
To my fellow Cruisers, aim higher! Work harder! Earn
the wealthiest way! Our profession is not just about having
green money. It is about loving your craft. Loving what you
do. Taking good care of what you have. In order to stay
longer in the industry, be the best that you can possibly be.
That spur of the moment decision when I was trying to
decide way back 1985 where to enroll turned out to be one of the
best decisions I had made in my life - a turning point for me. The
opportunities set by the school had helped me to accomplish my
goal of finishing college easily. I was aided financially through
scholarships for being a part of Handumanan Cultural Group and
an Editorial Staff of the school publication.
Right after graduation and after the TOSP awarding, I got
this recommendation from the Bureau of Customs Commissioner
Salvador M. Mison to work in the Bureau of Customs but I thought
then that I was a newly grad and do not have experience yet. So
I thought that maybe, it would be better if I would learn the trade
first by working in a brokerage firm. So my very first company was
Royal Cargo Corporation and I was assigned as Documentation
Assistant. I stayed there for almost two years then transferred to
Friends Logistics, Incorporated (FLI) where I spent the next 13
years and did almost everything: from documentation, to sales
and marketing, to operations/troubleshooting in the BOC down
to the delivery of shipments to the importers. Our clients loved
that personalized service and that’s how we retained and kept
their loyalty. I was Vice President of FLI before I left the industry.
After my Customs brokerage experience, I pursued my passion:
photography and filmmaking and led me to do jobs which others
think they can’t and that gave me the courage to learn it.
Needless to say that the BSCA course I took in JBLCF now
JBLFMU helped me a great deal getting jobs, it was WHERE you
took it. Same is true with the rest of our other graduates who took
other courses and I am just one of those who say that if not for
what we learned in JBLFMU, we would not have accomplished
nor achieved what we did.

I believe that in life there are many successful things

understood that it can be possible even if we are in any

The Seagull 2014
It all began, June of 2008. I was actually pressured as I
started my first year in college being a scholar because I had to
maintain good grades and study very hard. Since I came from a
poor family, the scholarship helped me a lot, and through hard
work, I was able to maintain it and became an active member
of our program in the university. Way back, I was elected as an
officer in our Young Traveller’s Society (YTS) the official club of
the Tourism students, and later became the President on my third
year. I was an active member of the Supreme Student Council
Society as the Secretary and served in RGA Travel and Tours
as a student assistant for me to be able to compensate for our
required tours during college.
I always believe that I am a lucky woman, a proof to which
was when I was able to land a very good job a month after my
graduation as Crewing and Travel Assistant at Vega Manila Crew
Management Inc, one of the successful shipping companies
in the shipping industry. Now, I am in my second year in the
company and I am really happy and satisfied with my career.
There is no perfect job, at times you will have that moment when
you fail, get reprimanded, and pressured.
To BST students, our program is unique and special because
we consider each other as family and we worked together to
reach our goals.
Enjoy every moment you have right now. Value your time
and sleep - you will miss that when you start working. Money is
never easily earned, patience will be your greatest weapon, and
believing in yourself will be your strong armor. The hospitality
industry is very wide and varied. Your capabilities as an
individual will be developed and honed in this field. “I am a
proud Lacsonian- a fulfilled Tourism graduate.”

BSMIT Graduate
Year Grauated: 2009
I’m 25 years old, married with one daughter. During
college, I was the President of Lacsonian Information
Technology Society (LITS) and the Class President when I
was in my 4th year. I was also a working student from 2nd
year to 3rd year assigned at the Dean’s Office of Business
Department.
Right after my graduation I was hired by TESDA Provincial
Office where I took my OJT during my 4th year as assistant to the
TVET Officer - managing all the TESDA scholarship database
records. After a year, I also tried BPO. I was CSR at Teletech
for 7 months and CSR at SPI Global for a year. But even though
I had this better-paying job, I always thirst for knowledge and I
wanted to enhance my skills on the field of I.T. The opportunity
came when Mr. Martin Fagar, Head of MIS Department, was in
need of additional staff at the MIS Department. He looked for
me and wanted me to be a part of the MIS and that was when
I landed on this dream job - where I am learning and working
at the same time. I worked as a Programmer and Technical
Support. Together with our senior Programmer, Mr. Karlo Ian
Cabañal, spearheaded by our Head, Mr. Martin Fagar, we are
the minds behind the programs you can see in our campus. We
managed and developed systems like our Enrolment System,
Student Monitoring (RFID Gate Entrance), Student Information
Kiosk (Touch Screen Kiosk), Queuing System, and most of the
programs used by the university to make transactions fast and
efficient for the benefit of all the students and staff. I am really
grateful to our Alma Mater for I was once a student and now a
regular employee.
When I was in my high school, I was addicted to computer
games and that’s one reason why I took this course knowing
that I’m good at this. All that misconceptions changed after
years of studying what I.T. was all about. Our instructors taught
us to better understand I.T. and how to be better at it.
After graduation, I immediately took board examination
for officer-in-charge of the engineering watch. For the very first
time, I experienced my first big failure… I flunked the board
exam. I accepted the failure whole-heartedly and began to
realize “something bigger is going to happen”. I took a second
chance for the board exam and this time, I succeeded. In
2010, a promotion has led me to take some risks of becoming
a fourth engineer officer on board Thome Ship Management.
On board ship, I experienced crab mentality, discrimination,
and bullying. Truly, it made me become a stronger person for I
have to prove my worth that I am capable of the responsibility
even if I am just a neophyte.
I became a part-time instructor in 2012, teaching CBT/
Review subject to nine graduating sections. In 2013, I boarded
another vessel and was able to travel to different countries
in Europe, experienced summer and winter solstice and a
tougher job. Recently, I passed the second engineer board
examination despite my busy schedule during vacation. I
thank the Lord, my family, and friends for the support.
Being a marine engineering graduate of JBLFMU-Molo,
I embraced the culture of discipline and respect from my
mentors and the rest of the school’s staffs. The school has
become my second home. Despite the notion of some people
that the BSMar-E course is only for non-intelligent people,
allow me to prove them wrong. In fact, this course has led me
to a wonderful realization... Marine Engineering is designed to
produce tough people and these people possess a creative
mind and a strong heart.
Every day is an opportunity for us to be better; every trial
is a blessing; every person is a blessing too; learn from your
own experience and you will become wise. Above all, walk
with faith in your heart and you will never walk alone.

500H, it appears on his wristwatch. He puts his sneakers on and gets his bags ready. The car loudly blow its horn, signaling
that it’s time to go. Kilometers away from the polluted ambiance of metropolis is a strenuous trek that awaits him. This is another
big day for him – another day for a new and exhilarating quest.
Ignoring the sun’s scorching rays, he makes his last few steps up to the mountain’s peak. Sweating. Catching his breath.
Exhausted but completely satisfied. Tiring indeed, but for him this is not just a simple mountain trek but a challenge that is already
part of his routine – a challenge he is ready to take.
Darryl Darwyin Thulasidas, a second
year BSMar-E student is not the typical
guy you see around. Being daring and
adventurous are the two things which
made him distinct from other Lacsonians
who mostly excel in their academics. He
was able to build a strong foundation for
himself, and developed camaraderie with
the people around him whom he considers
a family. He is a man of chronicles, of
adventures, and of passion. Let’s check
it out.
A DEADLY ROMANCE
Scorpions, tarantulas, and different
species of snakes. Yes, they sound creepy.
But Darryl, in a different perspective, love
these lethal creatures. Aside from the
typical pets at home like cats and dogs,
he purchased exotic animals abroad and
14
The Seagull 2014
built an adaptable habitat for them (Sure,
John B. got a version of Matanglawin
Host, Kuya Kim).
“It’s something like sa iba nga balay
bal-an mo na kung paano mag-atipan
sang ido. Sa exotic animals it’s something
new and different kay medyo curious ka
kag siyempre delikado siya. Kag ako
nga tawo daan gusto ko batuan ang fear
nga amo na. Damo ka man ma-learn like
psychology sang exotic animals kag kung
magdugay na, mabal-an mo nga indi
man guid sila delikado. Kinanlan mo lang
right knowledge and understanding sa
pagsagud sa ila,” Darryl explained.
Some of his exotic pets include
Red Knee Tarantula, Asian Forest
Scorpion, Emperor Scorpion, Fire Bellied
Salamander, Albino Burmese Python,
Red Tail Boa, Ball Python, Hedgehog and
Green Tree Python. I hope it didn’t trigger
your growing phobias with these spinechilling lists of his exotic collection.
For others, it’s insane to take care of
these kinds of animals but for him, there’s
nothing wrong with it as long as it doesn’t
harm other people. This romance with
deadly animals is surely challenging. With
such an exceptional hobby, for sure you
don’t want to miss these exotic pets of him
in the next intramurals exhibit of the Eagle
Cross.
THE ART OF KICKS AND
PUNCHES
Darryl had made himself realize that his
passion was never to become a platinumbreaker singer or an award-winning actor but
rather to master the same skills that of Jackie
Chan and Jet Li – the spectacular art of Wushu.
PEOPLE
“Sa wushu dira ko guid nakita ang
kalipay. Daw something bala nga mag
practice ka, excited ka dayon. Daw
kanami lang bala batyagon nga everyday
may ma-accomplish ka.”
When he first witnessed and sensed
the captivating art of Wushu, it was love at
first sight that set his blood to rise and his
eyes in a stunning awe. From that day on,
he focused on practicing and mastering
every angle of the art.
“Grade three guid ako kang nag start
December 5, 2010. Darryl Darywin
Thulasidas of the Philippines emerged
victorious in the 3rd International South
Shaolin Wushu Competition when he
defeated and seized all gold medals
from the entire category which he
joined. Indeed, it was not long when his
determination and compassion on his
chosen field paid off.
THE BACKPACKER’S TRAIL
Most students would spend their
free time studying and preparing for their
mind boggling examinations, or play their
addictive games like LOL (League of
Legends), DOTA (Defense of the Ancients)
or the newest game-craze, flappy bird.
Darryl redefines his way of enjoying his
leisure time by spending it with nature’s
cradle.
Being an active member of the
Eagle Cross (Research, Environment and
Rescue Volunteers), he is exposed to the
different activities that the organization
conducts.
“Ang pinakaimportante guid nga
activity nga gina-conduct sang Eagle
Cross amo ang Amlig Suba in partnership
with DENR (Department of Environment
and Natural Resources) in celebration
of Earth Day. Kag ang iban nga schools
gina-invite guid namon para maka-join
sa activity kag ma-share nila ila nga
experiences kag ang mga pwede nila
himuon para mabuligan ang environment
bisan sa gamay lang nga pamaagi.”
If you’ve been hooked with the
unproductive way of living and lousy
lifestyle, you can join him in this activity
which would help you burn a lot of calories.
It involves mountain trekking, camping,
medical mission, and distribution of relief
goods.
He also ventured to the realm of Mt.
Napulak, Igbaras, Iloilo where he was
captivated with the panoramic view of
the mountains and nature’s splendor.
This 24-hour national climb together with
professional mountaineers made him
came up with a realization.
“After ko saka sa Mount Napulak with
professional mountaineers dira ko guid
na realize nga gusto ko ni, nga indi ko
lang siya hobby pero part na sang akon
routine.”
Undeniably, he has proven that being
a Lacsonian, you should not limit yourself
in the four walls of the classroom, the
gloomy ambiance of the library and from
all of your nerve-cracking lessons and
exams. One must explore to open new
doors of opportunities and possibilities,
seek oneself, experience and learn new
things which aren’t taught in school.

“Self-proclaimed Love Experts”
I
vana*, an 18 year old Tourism student
was sitting at the bench. She was
15 minutes early for her first subject
and she regretted it. It was February 14,
Valentine’s Day. Everybody around her
was walking head over heels in love,
and there she was, sitting on the bench,
sulking - forever alone. Across her was
another student, a guy. It was difficult
to see his course pin to know from what
program he belongs especially because
all students under the College of Business
had the same uniform except for those
taking up BSCSM. He was cute, with a
shallow dimple on his right face. Why was
it showing? Oh! He was smiling at her! She
smiled back, thinking there was no harm in
doing so. And then, what she thought was
a fairytale began.
Often,
lovers
make
unspoken
promises. Like unwritten laws of the
universe that many wise men from long
time ago tried to figure out. There are rituals
too. Some do it with their hands clasped,
the others by looking at their knowing
eyes. Love and promises, can you ever
separate one from the other? It will be like
picking up salt from pepper when mixed.
However, living happily ever after is not as
easy as Disney movies make it seem to be.
Most people neglect and end up waking
up at the wrong side of the bed. So we
tracked down random Lacsonian students
and faculty members to answer questions
we normally want to know but are hesitant
to ask. Read on and you might just realize
you’re not alone.
Why some choose to be single:
5. Kuripot. Ang mga babae daw makina sang barko. HIGH MAINTENANCE!
4. Academic Scholar. “Dala pa na sa requirement for graduation?”
3. Fairytale fanatic. Hintay ng hintay, wala namang parating. (Try mo kaya maglaklak ng reyalidad?)
2. QHSE Advocate. Mataas ang standards. To maintain and exceed the stakeholders expectations ang peg.
1. Love Phobic. Palusot ng mga taong wala lang talagang may nagkakagusto.

LOVE TIPS
How girls want to be courted:
5. Package Deal. “If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends. Make things last forever, friendship never
ends!” One for all, all for one. 50% of girl’s decisions related to relationships are based on their barkada’s recommendations.
So be sure to include them in the bucket list and treat them well to get your application letter a good headstart.
4. Effort. Flowers and chocolates are good, but the chase is and will always be the best part. With Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter and other social media sites, makes things easier, but building the relationship’s communication is much better when
done in person. Fall in love with the real face and not to the pictures you see.
3. Security. It is in women’s nature to want to feel safe and secured. We’re not just talking about huge biceps and 8 pack
abs here, we’re talking about security for long term purposes. So that would mean free treats from time to time.
2. Maria Clara. Going to the girl’s house to meet the family is one sign of showing sincere motives. Don’t forget the classic
Filipino harana and you’ll surely ring the bell to her heart.
1. The power of sense of humor could take a person miles and miles farther than they thought possible. According to
research, girls prefer boys with sense of humor than those with handsome physique. So start investing in your mind for the
small talks and make your way to the Lacsonian girls’ well guarded heart. Yun oh!
Top 5 Signs guys look for to know if she’s for keeps
5. “Kung gusto mong lumigaya ang iyong buhay, humanap ka ng pangit at ibigin mong tunay.” - sabi ng walang choice.
4. One of the boys. Yung kayang sumabay sa barkada. Hindi porke’t kayo na, kayo na lang dalawa parati. Kilig as the
girls are when their boyfies make “hatid-sundo” together with their girlfriends. It is an unknown fact that boys too appreciate
girls who get to get along with the guy’s circle of friends and are able to laugh at their jokes especially the colorful ones. If you
know what I mean.
3. Just so you know, guys want and appreciate “the moments” too. So the mere “act of sensitivity” of not nibbling with
your phone or checking it for text messages from time to time gives the impression that you’re into the moment just as he is
into you. ALL EYES ON HIM.
2. We first see the physical aspect yes. But personality and character play a big part too.
1. Girls who are family-oriented and God-fearing are more often for keeps than those who are not. That’s because they are
brought up valuing relationships and care for other people’s concerns and needs other than their own.
Top 5 things boys do not understand about girls
5. “Why the sudden change of moods? Women!”
4. “Hambal ya okay lang siya bisan hindi. Kung mapati ko, mangakig siya. Kung indi ko magpati, mangakig man siya
gihapon. Budlay gid ya intindihon!”
3. “Why do I get punished if Eve’s monthly curse fall upon her? Sala ko na bala kung gasakit pus-on ya? Ako may sala??
Ako? Ako??”
2. “What ritual are they doing that they have to go to the restroom in pair or in groups? It’s an ancient history!”
1. Date Addicts. There’s no written code for it, but girls seem to have this Date-particular-syndrome and have their
calendars marked with dates and events that you have to remember if you don’t want to start a fight. Like the day you first did
the HHWW. But, you could forget about all that. Just not the monthsary. Yes, I feel you.
Top 5 things girls do not understand about boys
5. Pride Chicken
4. Magnetic X-ray Vision. Do I need to explain any further? No? Good.
3. Bi-standard. Bakit kapag ang babae nagkaroon ng maraming boyfriends are given that awful title with the big B? As
in... B... b... bad girl? Pero kapag ang lalake nagkaroon ng maraming girlfriends, macho?
2. “Ikaw ang may kasalanan, bakit ako pa ang mali?”
1. Para silang BUBBLE GUM - sa umpisa lang ang tamis (when courting). Consistency guys! CONSISTENCY!

irst step. Second step. I took them
ever so slowly. As if the gangplank
connecting the huge vessel and the
port would lead me to another dimension.
One from which I could never be able
to return home. With my red suitcase at
hand, I took the last step, and for a minute,
the grease’s smell sent tingling nostalgia
of flowing memories. It came so vividly it
was almost painful. I was so consumed by
my emotions I felt like bursting to tears.
Ari na! Ari na! Shipboard on-the-job
training na namon. Tuod na ni nga barko!
This was the time where everything’s
supposed to go slow-mo, with my hair
blown by the sea breeze. A few meters
away from me would be the young
captain, captivated by my beauty. With
our eyes locked to each other, he would
walk straight right to me, and down on his
knees, the young master mariner asks for
my hand.
“Miss, palihog dasigon ta lang
maghulag kay damo pa pasahero gasaka
sa entrance!” said the port staff that
snapped me out from my daydream as he
held out his hand to help me.
This was no movie. No slo-mos, no
handsome captain, and nobody’s going to
be interested with me. None. Not with my
uncooperative curls sticking out from my
hairnet and underdeveloped body parts.
Just then, I saw my friends Hazzeline
and Rona and almost hated how they still
managed to look pretty with a messy hair.
I, on the other hand, looked like Simba’s
father, Mufasa, the Lion King. Hear
me,“RAAAWWWRR!!!”

A few months ago, my world revolved
around class discussions, assignments,
exams, and my only worries were how to
do the flambé, how to juggle 4 bottles at
the same time and how on earth will I get
pass the 6 feet area in our swimming class
without drinking half of the pool’s water
(which in fairness, doesn’t taste as bad as
I expected it to be. I’m kidding, of course!)
As a Bachelor of Science in Cruise
Ship Management (BSCSM) student, the
thought of what will happen next kept me
up late at night since Graduation Day is
already fast approaching. The fact that
I will be able to finally finish college is
already a big achievement. It is, however,
also a fact that the graduation ceremony
marks the beginning of yet another race
that the graduates of this university must
take. One that we must immediately take
before the ticket runs out. We have so
many dreams but we must not let ourselves
get caught on the “wishful thinking” trap.
We must set goals and decide to act
upon them if we really want to get our
dream jobs. According to a businessman,
philanthropist and New Thought self-help
book author William Clement Stone, “The
choice is yours. You hold the tiller. You
can steer the course you choose in the
direction of where you want to be – today,
tomorrow or in a distant time to come.”
See? If it is to be, it is up to me!
“Indi na da sagay hulat inspiration
kay laban nga inspiration may expiration.
Paghulag!” my friend Keeshia Catedral
said. And I realized that she made so
much sense. Are you even aware of the
big number of graduates in your own
batch? Let’s be realistic. There will come
a time that even your closest friend will be
your competitor, somehow, someway. And
just imagine the number of graduates from
other big-time universities such as CPU,
San Agustin, WVSU and St. Paul. Take
note, that’s just from Iloilo. Do you get my
point?? YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE
EYEING THE BIG SHIP!
Though it pays to have a sunny
disposition, expecting bumps along
the way doesn’t mean being negative.
It is, according to psychology, the Art
of Anticipation - like having a pillow
around you to minimize the impact of an
anticipated, unexpected hit, just in case.
I could still remember how one night, as
I was on duty, a drunken guest made
me accompany him in his table only to
be filled with negative projections of my
future because of the career I chose
and the course I took. And most of all,
because of my height! It was a time of
testing and I wasn’t about to give up
without a fight. I had to battle what I heard
and kept on believing the POTENTIAL OF
GREATNESS my school and my program
planted within me. “Big thinking precedes
big achievement.” – Wilfred Peterson
I will have to keep my hopes high
because that’s just what I got, for now.

nrolling in a school which was
never listed in my options gave me
such a hard time to fit in and adjust
(I could have took medical or business related courses). And yeah, I knew it was
magic of fate that ruled then- in everything.
It was fate that made me learn to love my
course as well.
Cadet 4th class Pagayon, Christian
Jave G. requests permission to come
aboard, sir!
Cadet 4th Class
Two weeks after the opening of
classes, we (referring to me my Polaris
1-A classmates) were reprimanded by
our seniors to perform sustained pushups in front of the beautiful girls near the
canteen. Though girls find it hot, can you
imagine how embarrassing it was for us?
And then the dramas went on like “Nageskwela kami di ya para magtuon, indi
kay ma-marching kag mag-form,” “Paano
kami ni ya katuon kay sa tanan nga vacant
ginapa-form kami?!” (Probably most
Polaris freshmen have said this). Being
a cadet under the special program in a
semi-military university, we are trained
to exhibit discipline and politeness to
everyone. Indeed, those were one of the
factors that made me a morally-upright
person.
Inspiring and informing people
through my writings gave me a feeling that
no one could afford. That moment when
I saw the publication ad that they are in
need of new staff, without any second
thought, I immediately asked permission
from my instructor to join the screening.
In the right process, through my faith and
passion, my prayers were answered. I owe
it to my advisers and senior staff members
who gave me the chance to be one - they
were my real family and that I will forever
be grateful.
Cadet 3rd Class
I, began to put direction in my lifestudy hard, strive to graduate, and get
a license while partying harder. Life,
education, friends, and family are well
valued in this stage. At some point, I got
to cross along the borders of life with
the special persons surrounding me.
Publication and school were my priorities.
The exciting part is, finally, I have my
juniors who always call me “Sir Pagayon”
every time we meet. You know that
feeling? Aaaaah.. It feels so great. Now
I understand the feeling of a senior who
wanted nothing but the best for his juniors.
And before entering college, people tend
to call me in three pseudonyms: Toto,
Chris, and Tian. Surprisingly, it turned out
to be six with Cj, Pags, and Jave. Isn’t it
amazing to be baptized again, buddies?
Cadet 2nd Class
There are big challenges that lie
ahead of me - apprenticeship, Bachelor’s
degree, and board exam. I need to fix
my disposition in life and prepare myself
physically, mentally, spiritually, and most
important, emotionally. When asked if we
are ready to leave our loved ones during
the Pre-Departure and Orientation Seminar
(PDOS), I answered yes - for future’s sake.
PDOS transported us to the real world of a
seafarer. Yes I admit, it’s hard, really, but I
will always be at my best in my profession.
I am counting on my remaining days in
college. For not so long, I will be leaving
the university for good with all the values
and knowledge inculcated to me that will
serve as my armor in my chosen career.
Thanks John B.!
On a personal note, life’s ups and
downs are constant. We may fall and
stumble at times, but it doesn’t matter
anyway. The deal is, we need to get up
and keep going again for everyday is a
new chance, a new life - waste nothing.
Time and experience will teach us how to
grow better and stronger. Success is just
sitting there waiting for you to own it with
your dedication, will, and faith in God in
the rightmost time.
In a span of three years, somehow,
the JBLFMU-Molo community has opened
and introduced me to new opportunities
of which in one way or another, have
prepared my future endeavor. More
world-class seafarers to come, I guess.
I AM A CERTIFIED TRUE BLOODED
LACSONIAN: I REFUSE TO SINK AND I
INSIST TO SAIL ON.

H
opeful, young and hungry for
learnings. Yes, that was me three
years ago when I made up my
mind and chose to enter the world full
of uncertainties and a world that is ruled
only by the strongest wherein only few
emerged-the maritime world.
It was not so long ago when I dared
to dream and took the first essential step
towards its fulfillment. I can still remember
the first day I entered into this institution. It
was a fine day. A typical scenario of first
day class enveloped the whole campus.
Everyone was rushing. Some were busy
chatting with their friends while others
were looking for their classrooms. I felt like
an alien in a whole new world I’ve never
been to,new environment, new faces and
new set of people to get along with.
Suddenly, a loud strange voice
echoed all over the area. I thought there
was a commotion somewhere near me
so I looked for it. It led me in front of the
John B. Lacson monument where group of
individuals in uniform were in a formation. I
was curious at that moment. Then a young
man took control as he yelled military
commands over the group.
“Chant POLARIS! Chant!”
“P-O-L-A-R-I-S! POLARIS! POLARIS!
POLARIS! Hoo-hah!”
At that very moment, I was amazed
by how they showed immense discipline
and snappy movements as they marched
back and forth in unison. That made me
utter words in the air, “I want to be like
them!”
I dared to dream and that burning
26

desire has kept me away from giving up.
It also made me realize that if we let our
passion guide us, there’s nothing that can
go wrong. And I made it!
Being in the Polaris Class resembles
a great sense of responsibility. With that,
we have to live up with the expectations
of others and bring the name of the school
with pride and honor. It is an opportunity
that is indeed worth something.
This institution where I entrusted
my future taught me the essence of
worthy education. I invested learnings
and I will withdraw a better future. For
once a speaker said, “Success =
(knowledge+skills+ability) attitude,
anything multiplied by zero is zero. Then,
attitude really matters.”
Along the way, we meet a lot of trials
but it is our attitude, learned discipline
and the core values installed upon us that
will keep us going especially in facing
doubting circumstances. As long as we
live, there will be always beacons of light
that will show us the right path to take.
They say the world is a game of
survival. Only the strongest among the
strongest and the fittest of the fittest will
survive and so is in seafaring profession.
Our journey in this institution prepares
us into a more complex atmosphere ahead.
All these years of hardship, struggle and
perseverance have made me stronger
and better prepared for something bigger
than this - bigger than college. It prepared
me for the waves of the sea.
As the Master commands “Anchor
away!” there would be no holding back.
As the voyage sets, we will be sailing the
roughest seas, face the toughest tides and
survive the greatest storms of challenges
in life. Yes, it is inevitable. We will all soon
be facing life’s greatest battles. It calls for
one courageous act and undying faith to
survive amidst life’s toughest tests. I know
it’s hard but I have to deal with it.
My time has come and my flight is over.
Nevertheless, I would like to express my
heartfelt gratitude to those who have been
with me all throughout my journey. To my
friends whom I shared my ups and downs,
to this institution who gave realization to
my dreams, and to my second family, The
Seagull, I salute you all! Three long years
of journey as part of its wings have led
me to different destinations. Even though
along the flight, she met a lot of struggles
yet she still managed to be on the right
track and live up with its purpose-driven
heart for journalism. This would probably
be my last article as a publication staff,
but I will never stop inspiring others for
it is a powerful tool that has aided me to
practice freedom not only for myself but
also for others as well.
This is not the end of everything. This
is not the end of all my dreams but rather,
this is just the beginning of my journey into
the next level. As I leave the four pillars of
this institution, I shall live with its teachings
for I am a TRUE BLOODED LACSONIAN
and no matter where life will take meI SHALL SURVIVE!

urprise quizzes, creepy deadlines,
boring classes and mystical
reviewers make me sleep instantly
in just one glance. I can’t help but let my
tears fall. These things could even make a
real man cry. But now is the time to bid my
last goodbyes as I march my way out of
the gates of JBLFMU-Molo.
I could still picture out myself wearing
my first pair of loose uniform sitting at the
corner of room G at the CSM building
listening and writing down everything
the teacher says, I mean literally EVERYTHING. It was then I realized, that I
am a college guy now. That same moment
when I felt my nerves crumbled in pain
and my heart pounded tons heavier than
how it usually does, it is because of the
fear inside of me.
I felt alone and small in a big, wide
and crowded place where I am not familiar
with. I wanted to go out of the room and
make my way home as fast as I could but
something came to me.
My young and troubled mind slapped
me with questions. What do I want to do?
Where do I want to go? What do I want to
be? How can I achieve it? And where will
I start? I made an answer to it and I said
yes. I said YES to my future. I said YES
to my dreams and said NO to my fears.
This is now the time for me to take my step
towards my pursuit to success.
The path to victory isn’t that easy.
Being an Information Technology student
was not that hard as I imagined, in fact it
was harder than what I expected (not to
discourage, of course). Reading codes,
memorizing codes, combining codes,
debugging codes, and everything that
require logic are tackled but take note
that it is only a field in IT. Someone once
told me, “Everything in life is hard, even
sleeping, but if you will learn to love
what you are doing, someday it will love
you back”. Makes sense and this one
enlightened me towards my journey.
Luckily, I found myself to be good in
the field of design because of my love for
art. Being an IT is not just about codes.
Everything has art, even in computers and
that is why I consider myself as a modern
day artist.
The learnings and experiences that
I carry now upgrade my character and
made me stronger to face even harder
battles that may come as I continue my
journey with the help of my loved ones
who are always there for me in times that
my hand slips to the wrong direction. They
never failed to assist me whenever I lose
track. Everything I had accomplished, I
offer to them. They are the reasons why I
persevere and work hard. To this institution
that trained me to be a well-equipped
competitor and well-furnished emblem of
a complete and educated man, I thank
you. Lastly, to my beloved the Seagull
family who gave me the chance to be a
part of this elite circle of marvelous people
and for letting me write and express
myself in words and in graphics.
Now I am on my way to conquer the
next stage of my game. I should hold my
controller well, have a good grip on it and
eyes to the cursor. I can feel that the end
is quite near and my heart beats with
focus, banging my mind straight to what I
need to achieve.
Giving no chances to game overs
because, I, myself will declare that I
will finish this game as a True Blooded
Lacsonian with faith in GOD Almighty. I will
survive!

Ship
A ship is a large vessel that
floats on water. In traditional
terms, ships were considered
to be vessels which had at
least one continuous watertight deck extending from bow
to stern. Ships may be found
on lakes, seas, and rivers
and they allow for a variety

transport of people or goods,
fishing, entertainment, public
safety, and warfare.

OLDEST ACTIVE SHIP
Star of India is the world’s oldest active sailing
ship. She began her life on the stocks at Ramsey

her keel, the ship was launched into her element.
She bore the name Euterpe, after the Greek muse
of music and poetry.

Oh C’mon… High tuition, low WIFI connection?
What could be worse than this??
- j.j.e.l.s.
To j.j.e.l.s:
Why is our Wifi connection sometimes too
slow? Please consider these possible reasons:
Your gadget maybe too far from our access
point;
There are many Wi-Fi users connected at the
same time;
The internet center has already requested for
an additional bandwidth to increase the speed of the
internet, however, the school is still considering on
the cost arising from the plan for it may result to the
increase in the students’ internet fee.
If you have other concerns regarding this
matter, please visit the internet center from Monday
to Friday at 8:00 A.M to 5:00 P.M for assistance so as
to improve your Wi-Fi connection
Thank you very much.

H
ave you heard about Barcelona,
Arsenal, Bayern Munich and
the world famous Real Madrid?
I guess only few can tell how famous
and well known these prominent football
teams are. Our fascination to basketball
is a syndrome that prevents us from
developing our athletic prowess to other
sports like football. We are living in a
basketball-manic country, and when we
talk about sports, the first thing that comes
into our minds is basketball. We may not
even know how victorious our Philippine
Azkals is, more of our own JBLFMU-Molo’s
football team who has been carving
legacies for our school. Let’s take a look
at how our football team emerged from
being anonymous into a respected team
not only in the region but also around the
country.
Long years have passed since
JBLFMU-Molo began piercing in the
football field contending with other
respected colleges and universities in
Iloilo through the Iloilo Private Schools
Athletic Association (ILOPRISAA). It was
way back 1980s when this institution
32
The Seagull 2014
decided to establish its own football team
which started roughly with seasons of
failures and success. Years of competing
in the ILOPRISAA coupled with hardships
the team had played against, it generated
the motivation of the team to improve
and develop their game that transformed
them into one of the most recognized
and respected teams even in the whole
country. Evidences are the so-called
legacies that the team carries, more of the
plaques and trophies proving their sweet
victories throughout the years.
The limelight for the team started
in 2007 when Mr. Danny A. Soriano was
appointed to take over the coaching job
from Engr. Francisco Sollesta who will be
going abroad. After his appointment, the
team made a big leap and seized their
long-sought championship title in the
ILOPRISAA after thrashing their long-time
rival in the league, the Central Philippine
University (CPU).
They appeared
victorious in the succeeding three years
by overpowering their opponent for the
title, all of which is against its nemesis,
CPU.
SPORTS
Their aspirations brought them to a
winning streak bestowing them the laurels
of fame and respect from their adversaries.
Every success they have gained is a great
achievement for them but their victory in
the year 2010 was the greatest and the
most gratifying accomplishment they have
triumphed. After emerging as champion
during the ILOPRISAA, the team huddled
up to the 2nd place in the Western Visayas
PRISAA and was able to qualify for the
National PRISAA to represent Region VI.
They have been deeply challenged
to train harder for they will be facing
stronger teams from all over the country.
They remained resilient and brawled with
their best shots, and in the end of every
game they were able to defeat all of their
enemies grabbing the championship
title. They have overpowered the other
delegates from all over the country and
gained a reputation for the school.
Fresh from notching the national
championship, the team suffered one
of their utmost defeats against CPU in
a ragged match during the ILOPRISAA
2011. After their depressing loss, the team
continued to forge ahead and reclaimed
their crown the following year against
CPU. They maintained a victory spree
after defending the title in the ILOPRISAA
2013.
In addition to all of their achievements,
the team was also proclaimed champion
after reigning in the 2013 Savannah
Invitational Cup against CPU team whose
lineup is composed of international
players most of which are Koreans. Last
January 2014, the team represented Iloilo
in the WVPRISAA finishing 2nd place
behind La Salle Green Hills. In that same
event, the team demonstrated a masterful
10-0 beating of the Capiz team.
In all of their endeavors, the team
carries the core values that this institution
has instilled into their minds. They played
hard to bring our banner to the top and they
did it the Lacsonian way with discipline
and perseverance. It’s not important if
they are famous here in the campus or
not, what’s important is that they compete
with their best efforts carrying the JBLFMU
name in the football world.
