CALLE MAYOR MIDDLE SCHOOL
MESSAGE TO PARENTS
Dear Bulldog Families,
I can't believe we have already completed the first quarter of the school year. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank our fabulous board of directors and
chairpersons. They dedicate many hours of service to help bring amazing programs to our students and I appreciate all they do. They truly do help to make my
job much easier. And thank you to all of our volunteers who come out to help at
various events throughout the year as needed. We couldn't do it without all of
your support.
As usual, our students amaze me with their wonderful grades and the effort that
they make each day to be good students. There is always proof of this when we
see the long list of Honor Roll achievers each quarter. Thank you to all of the
students who took the time to create a Reflections project. I can't wait to introduce our winners at the December 6th association meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the
cafeteria. Please join us to appreciate our talented students. There will also be a
beginning band performance immediately following.
Our PTSA works hard each year to bring programs such as Adventures in Art,
Anti-drug awareness, our Reflections Art competition, field trip transportation
and many others. It is with your generous donations that we are able to make
these programs happen. We always welcome more volunteers, so don't hesitate to
contact me at calleptsa@verizon.net if you would like me to find a place where
your help is needed. Our nominating committee is now working to fill the PTSA
board for next year as well. So, please let us know if you would be interested in
serving in a position.

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER
Dear Calle Mayor Parents,
As Quarter 1 ends and Quarter 2
begins, much has been accomplished, as I’m sure you can attest, in the short ten weeks since
the school year began. As the
long days of Summer have ended
and we head into the Fall season,
it is with great joy that I find myself sitting down to communicate
what an incredible school we
have. I have had the opportunity
over the past months to observe
and hear from many other middle school administrators from
inside and outside of TUSD and
I must declare that we are quite
fortunate to not only be part of
the Torrance Unified family, but
to belong to such a dynamic and
wonderful community. I must
also note that we have a terrific
faculty, whose diligence and hard
work is a testimony to their commitment to uphold the high academic standard that makes Calle
Mayor the best school in the City
of Torrance, as is evident by our
API score of 924.
One of our goals for the year is to
have every student have a
“transformational” year academically, socially and psychologically.
This aspiration of “Becoming
Transformational” simply means
renewing our commitment to
bring out the best in others, encouraging others to look beyond
their own self-interest and to
make every effort to raise one
another’s achievements and motivations to levels that might otherwise have been impossible. These
“transformational” efforts will
allow every member of the Calle
Community to have an active
role in the present and future
success of our school. Please
know that teachers and staff are
working tirelessly to make the
“middle school” experience one
that brings personal, social and
emotional growth to our student
body, and provide a comprehensive education for all students. It
is no easy task to provide engaging lessons, direction and encouragement each and every day to
the almost 200 young minds that
occupy the seats of their classrooms. I have the pleasure of
knowing and working with each
teacher and staff member, and
can testify of their dedication to
Calle Mayor.
grow. We began this school year having been named a California Distinguished School in 2011 and with the
honor of being the top performing
school in the City of Torrance, as
previously mentioned. The rush to
begin school is often followed by the
realization that each ‘school year’ is
more of a marathon than a sprint,
and the race does not go to the swift
or the strong, but to the one who
endures to the end.
Thank you to Wendy Hurst, Calle
Mayor’s PTSA President, each member of our PTSA Board and every
parent volunteer who has labored on
behalf of our school. We are truly
blessed and PTSA’s continued efforts
are greatly appreciated.
As we head into Quarter 2 and the
end of the “calendar” year, I would
like to remind parents and students
alike that holiday festivities are a time
to reflect and be thankful on the
blessing that life brings, and renew in
our hearts a promise to work towards
becoming the best person we can,
while striving to also bring out the
best in others. Each New Year brings
with it opportunity to work towards a

SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and
Community Members,
Two months into the Fall
semester, teachers and students have settled into a
comfortable rhythm. As the
Thanksgiving Holiday approaches, we at TUSD have
many reasons to be thankful. We have a collection of
the most resourceful and
creative teachers, classified
employees, and administrators. They diligently work
day in and day out to make
sure our students receive the
best education, despite the
State’s continued economic
woes. We have parents who
partner with us to make sure
all TUSD students have the
opportunity to expand their
educational experiences and
succeed. We have a business
community,
who,
through the Torrance Area
Chamber of Commerce’s
Adopt-A-School
program,
continue to support our
educational goals. At last
month’s State of the Region
address,
Congresswoman
Hahn used TUSD as an example of an exceptional educational model. She commended the District’s ability
to keep Academic Performance Index (API) scores and
graduation rates high in the
face of dwindling dollars
from the State of California.
I am so proud of all of our
numerous
achievements,
and I know that we will con-
tinue to thrive.
Three years ago the Torrance community united
together and passed comprehensive Bond Measures
Y and Z. The fruits of those
efforts can be seen throughout the District. This past
summer we reopened Hull
Middle School with a festive community celebration,
and this Fall Walteria Elementary and Magruder
Middle Schools completed
their site modernizations.
Many of our other school
sites are either in the planning, approval, or renovation stage. For a comprehensive list of current projects and project timelines
please visit our Bond Measure
section
on
www.tusd.org.
Communication is a top
priority for Torrance Unified. We want to make sure
parents and community
members are kept informed
on key issues regarding our
District. We employ various methods of communications – e-blasts, monthly
messages, and our websites
– as a means of getting the
information out into the
community. Please take
advantage of these communications to stay current
with the latest TUSD news.
Sincerely,
Dr. George Mannon

PROPOSITIONS Y & Z UPDATE
In November 2008, Torrance
voters approved school facility
bond Measures Y & Z. Measure
Y funds core academic school
facility renovations while Measure Z funds facility renovations
that support extra-curriculur
activities. The funding covers
all TUSD schools. A lot of construction has been underway
district-wide the past three
years, including the new field
and stadium at South High
dedicated in September 2009.
In November 2011, it's Calle
Mayor's turn to begin construction! The construction
will be completed in six
phases. Each six-to-eight week
phase will target a different
wing of school classrooms.
Impacted students will be
moved into interim classrooms. Phase 1 includes
Wing C, Rooms 7-11, and
Phase 2 includes Wing D,
Rooms 1-6.6. Every classroom at Calle Mayor will re-
ceive new flooring, new windows, paint, and electrical
improvements. In addition to
classroom upgrades, new concrete, plumbing, and drainage
improvements will be made
throughout the campus and a
new science lab will also be
built. Consruction will continue through December 2012.
Look for project updates in the
weekly e-newsletter.

ABOUT OUR BULLDOG AWARD WINNERS
Every quarter, Calle Mayor
gives out the prestigious Bulldog Award. This award is given
to three students; one for each
grade level. To get the Bulldog
Award, students must not only
be well-rounded in academics,
but active outside of school.
Here is a little bit about each of
our winners this quarter:
This 6th grader is a Bulldog winner! This student excels academically and helps all students
succeed in school. This student
is respected by teachers and
goes out of the way to help others. This student loves to read,
draw, play the clarinet, and is
an accomplished dancer. This
student spends summer vacations
visiting relatives in India. Can you
guess who our 1st quarter 6th grade
winner is?! Sneha Chebolu, you
are our 6th grade Bulldog winner !
This 7th grader has just as much
Bulldog spirit as our 6th grade winner and let me tell you why! This 7th
grader excels academically and actively participates in several Calle
activities. They are Math Counts,
Journalism, Vocal Music, and the
running and basketball clubs. In
addition to school activities, this
student plays the piano, performs in
recitals, and plays in basketball and
tennis leagues outside of school.
This student also helps other students by tutoring in math and piano. Please help me congratulate
our 7th grade Bulldog winner, Edward
Xu !
This 8th grader is another Bulldog winner! For the past 3 years, this student
has been a member of Calle’s ASB/
Student Body. This student is a member of CJSF. This student is a member
of Calle’s yearbook staff. And, this student participates in Calle’s running
club. Always offering to help and doing
so with a smile, please help me congratulate Hannah Ro!
