Apart from the maximum permissible force, permissible torques have to be considered in designing these cylinders. Value and direction of these torques can be very different. Always try to ensure that the distance between the cylinder guide and the centre of gravity of the load is as short as possible. The permissible loads are determined by the type of guidance. Both maximum speed and maximum mass to be cushioned are determined by the driving medium and the kinetic energy permitted. Cases of Application (figures, see 1.3.1 to 1.3.4) The design described here is meant for the following cases of application: A A mass is driven and guided by the cylinder. Estimation of cycle time Please note: – Often it is not the cylinder speed that is known, but only the cycle time. By means of diagram 1.3.1 conversion can be made. – As to the diagrams for the dimensioning of the cushioning, calculations have to be based on the actual mass. If the cushioning capacity of a cylinder is not sufficient, either a larger cylinder or external shock absorbers have to be used which are to be mounted in the centre of the mass to be cushioned. – The values of STAR guidance include cases with large shocks. – Also consider the play and stiffness of the cylinder when selecting cylinder. (See table 1.3.2 and diagram 1.3.19) – Also consider maximum effect from the cylinder, see diagram 1.3.17 and 1.3.18. For individual applications different diagrams and charts have to be observed. Contact the nearest Rexroth Mecman office. Vertically up B A mass is driven by the cylinder, the guidance is carried out externally. C By means of the cylinder a force is transmitted to a standing object. D Static forces and torques on the slide. Horizontal Vertically down Loads on the Cylinder 1) The mass leads to torques on the slide due to the acceleration and cushioning and the weight during the movement. 2) The guidance leads to torques on the slide due to the friction. The mass generates a torque during acceleration and cushioning. 3) The force leads to torques on the slide. 4) Counter force which does not act half-way between the shuttles gives a moment on these. 5) Mechanical load of cylinder and guidance when the piston is stopped. Procedure in Designing the Cylinder 1. Determine the case of application (A-D) (see Fig. 1.3.1 to 1.3.4). 2. For this application determine lever arms as well as masses (kg) and moving speeds (m/s) (see Fig. 1.3.5 to 1.3.10). 3. Based on the diagrams and charts, select appropriate cylinder. Diagram 1.3.1 As a starting point the relationship m/A is used where m is the load on the cylinder (kg) and A is the cylinder piston area (cm2). A pneumatic cylinder is not normally loaded higher than m/A ≤4. The cycle time can be estimated from the diagram above. The pressure drop ∆Pp over the piston with a vertically ascending movement can also be read off. Assumptions - A pressure of 6 bar is always taken as a basis. - The diagrams are applicable for moving speeds of up to 0,7 m/s. If these are exceeded, the actual mass has to be multiplied by a correction factor of 2v2. Then calculations have to be continued with the corrected mass. The diagrams have been made for both horizontal and vertical applications. - To be sure that you will have good pneumatic control on the piston movement and reduce the risk of failure when e.g. starting up, let m/A (m = mass in kg and A = area in cm2) not to be higher than 4 for horizontal cases and 2 for vertical cases. Example: A 63 mm diameter cylinder with a 200 mm stroke is to move a mass of 45 kg vertically upwards. Estimate the time for a single stroke if the final velocity of the cylinder is to be 0.7 m/s. Answer: According to table 1.1.1, the piston area A = 31 cm2. m 45 = A 31 = 1.5 The time for a single stroke where km is read from the diagram is as follows: t= km · s 1.6 · 200 = 1000 · vss 1000 · 0.7 = 0.45 seconds It can also be seen from the diagram that a pressure drop of ~1.5 bar over the cylinder piston is needed in order to overcome the mass load. t= km · s/vss 1000 t = cycle time (s) s = the cylinder stroke (mm) vss = piston steady state velocity (m/s) Limitation: accuracy is reduced for short cylinders. 50 Technical Information Actuators Back to Index Layout for Applications A and B 1. Determine lever arms and masses. 2. Determine if you need a correction factor based on the velocity. 3. By means of the torque diagrams, (diagrams 1.3.2 to 1.3.10) select cylinder alternative and cylinder diameter. If 2 torque diagrams require the same cylinder diameter, the next larger cylinder is to be selected. (Example: Diagram M results in ∅ 25, diagrams Ms and Mv in ∅ 32, a cylinder of ∅ 40 has to be applied). 4. Depending on the installation position and p1.3.ressure medium, check cushioning according to diagrams 1.3.11 to 12. 5. Compare 3 and 4, the largest diameter must be used. 6. For good pneumatic control of the piston movement, especially when the stroke is short, let m/A be less than 4 for horizontal and 2 for vertical cases. C Fig. 1.3.3 Layout for Application C The resulting permissible forces have to be taken from diagram 1.3.17 and 1.3.18. D Layout for Application D The cylinder diameter required has to be determined based on table 1.3.3. Control of rodless cylinders The control of the rodless cylinder has to be realised such that the pneumatic cushioning works reliably even after a pressure breakdown or when starting the system again. This is possible only when the secondary chamber of the cylinder is charged. * The measure EH must be included in XZ, see the dimension drawings A Fig. 1.3.1 B Fig. 1.3.2 51 D Fig. 1.3.4 Technical Information Actuators 1.3.1 Dimensioning moment M, Ms, Mv, Internal Guiding Dimensioning moment Ms Permitted mass as a function of the moment arm. WARNING: FLUID MEDIA Bosch Rexroth pneumatic devices are designed and tested for use with filtered, clean, dry, chemical free air at pressures and temperatures within the specified limits of the device. For use with media other than air or for human life support systems, Bosch Rexroth must be consulted. Hydraulic cylinders are designed for operation with filtered, clean, petroleum based hydraulic fluid; operation using fire-resistant or other special types of fluids may require special packing and seals. Consult the factory. 2. WARNING: MATERIAL COMPATIBILITY Damage to product seals or other parts caused by the use of noncompatible lubricants, oil additives or synthetic lubricants in the air system compressor or line lubrication devices voids Bosch Rexroth's warranty and can result in product failure or other malfunction. See lubrication recommendations below. AIR LINE LUBRICANTS! In service higher than 18 cycles per minute or with continuous flow of air through the device, an air line lubricator is recommended.* (Do not use line lubrication with vacuum products.) However, the lubricator must be maintained since the oil will wash out the grease, and lack of lubrication will greatly shorten the life expectancy. The oils used in the lubricator must be compatible with the elastomers in the device. The elastomers are normally BUNA-N, NEOPRENE, VITON, SILICONE and HYTREL. Bosch Rexroth recommends the use of only petroleum based oils without synthetic additives, and with an aniline point between 180° F and 210° F. COMPRESSOR LUBRICANTS! All compressors (with the exception of special "oil free" units) pass oil mist or vapor from the internal crankcase lubricating system through to the compressed air. Since even small amounts of non-compatible lubricants can cause severe seal deterioration (which could result in component and system failure) special care should be taken in selecting compatible compressor lubricants. It is recommended that users review the National Fluid Power Association "Recommended Guide Lines For Use Of Synthetic Lubricants In Pneumatic Fluid Power Systems" (NFPA T1.9.2-1978). 3. WARNING: INSTALLATION AND MOUNTING The user of these devices must conform to all applicable electrical, mechanical, piping and other codes in the installation, operation or repair of these devices. INSTALLATION ! Do not attempt to install, operate or repair these devices without proper training in the technique of working on pneumatic or hydraulic systems and devices, unless under trained supervision. Compressed air and hydraulic systems contain high levels of stored energy. Do not attempt to connect, disconnect or repair these products when a system is under pressure. Always exhaust or drain the pressure from a system before performing any service work. Failure to do so can result in serious personal injury. MOUNTING! Devices should be mounted and positioned in such a manner that they cannot be accidentally operated. 4. WARNING: APPLICATION AND USE OF PRODUCTS The possibility does exist for any device or accessory to fail to operate properly through misuse, wear or malfunction. The user must consider these possibilities and should provide appropriate safe guards in the application or system design to prevent personal injury or property damage in the event of a malfunction. 5. WARNING: CONVERSION, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR When a device is disassembled for conversion to a different configuration, maintenance or repair, the device must be tested for leakage and proper operation after being reassembled and prior to installation. MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR! Maintenance periods should be scheduled in accordance with frequency of use and working conditions. All Bosch Rexroth products should provide a minimum of 1,000,000 cycles of maintenance free service when used and lubricated as recommended. However, these products should be visually inspected for defects and given an "in system" operating performance and leakage test once a year. Where devices require a major repair as a result of the one million cycles, one year, or routine inspection, the device must be disassembled, cleaned, inspected, parts replaced as required, rebuilt and tested for leakage and proper operation prior to installation. See individual catalogs for specific cycle life estimates. 6.
