Program Objectives
Job Opportunities
Interior designers plan, design, and furnish
interiors of residential, commercial, and
industrial buildings. They formulate designs
which are practical, aesthetic, and conducive
to such purposes as raising productivity, selling
merchandise, or improving lifestyle.
Through the year 2014, the Gulf Coast Region is
forecasted to generate a total of 296 new interior
design jobs. Hourly starting pay for an interior
designer in 2006 ranged from $21.80 to $22.55.
Jobs that could be pursued by a person with
an education in interior design include ceramic
tile designer, accessory designer, furniture
designer, textile designer, AutoCAD draftsperson,
freelance writer for interior design publications/
newspapers, television host, home furnishings
editor, educator, product researcher, facilities
manager, in-house designer for government
agencies, in-house designer for hospitals and
care facilities, in-house designer for colleges and
universities, residential designer, commercial
designer, hospitality design, manufacturers
representative, retail buyer for design related
products, and showroom representative.
Courses in the interior design program are
designed to develop the ability to identify,
research, and creatively solve problems relative to
interior spaces, including programming, design
analysis, and space planning. The students will
work with commercial and residential interiors,
prepare presentations, and learn business
procedures used by interior designers.
Training includes five terms of study in interior
design and related courses. Upon completion
of the required 66 term hours, the student may
file for an associate of applied science degree.
Students may continue their study to complete
the twelve term hours in the third year of
the program and receive the Enhanced Skills
Certificate in interior design.

Annual pay for designers with five to 10 years of
experience can range from $18,000, working for a
small independent designer, to over six figures for
a very successful designer with a solid client base.
