Open to the public, it’s a great place to take a walk in the woods without having to leave town. Beltline: The stretch of highway 12/18 that runs east to west on the south end of town. (When someone says The Interstate, they’re usually talking about 90/94/39 to Chicago or Minneapolis.) The Coliseum: Also known as the Alliant Energy Center. Home to concerts, horse shows, and the Dane County Fair. If you need info from there, be sure you’re calling the Expo Center and not the energy company. Dane: Yes, it’s a type of dog. It’s also the county we live in, and a favorite local restaurant and pub. There are four Great Danes around town, serving good food late into the night. Hippy Christmas: Every August when the UW students move out, they are faced with too much stuff and not enough truck space. So they leave it out on the curb. Fantastic, sometimes brand new things, like fans, mirrors, and futons, are free for the taking all over the downtown area. Isthmus: Technically, it’s a strip of land between two bodies of water. Here, it’s where downtown and the Capitol sit. It’s also our free weekly paper. The Square: That would be the Capitol Square: the lawn and four streets that surround the Capitol building. The Farmer’s Market, Taste of Madison, Art Fair on the Square, Concerts on the Square, and St. Patrick’s Day Parade are all here. St. Vinny’s: A global charitable organization with five stores (and a Dig-&-Save!) here in Madison. Good looking, gently used clothes, winter coats, and furniture for cheap. If you move here without a dresser, desk, or bedspread, try St. Vinny’s first. Careful…it’s addicting. State Street: A pedestrian-only shopping, eating, and peoplewatching gold mine. Some people will tell you it’s their favorite thing about Madison. It runs from the Capitol Square to the Library Mall at the heart of UW Madison. Stoughton: Pronounced STOW’–ton, just south of Madison that’s proud of its Norwegian heritage, and much easier to visit than its sister city in Norway! Stoughton Road is the stretch of Highway 51 that goes north to south through Madison. The Terrace: There are two, actually. UW Madison Memorial Union Terrace is on the shores of Lake Mendota, and has food and beverages, live music, and a great sunset. There’s also the Monona Terrace, the Frank Lloyd Wright inspired conference and convention center. You’ll love the rooftop…come for the music, stay for the view. 800-236-4997 • MediaInstitute.edu • MADISON MEDIA INSTITUTE 2 Choosing an Area Chances are you’ll end up living close to the school. Of course, you don’t have to, but there are a few things to consider before choosing your new neighborhood. Do you drive? The Money Factor If so, no problem! You can live anywhere. Madison is pretty easy to get around. It’s only ten minutes from MMI to the airport, for instance. Think about your commute, though. Many classes start at 8 am, and traffic on the Beltline and Stoughton Road can slow down a bit. Plus, road conditions can be a challenge in the winter. Because of these factors, closer may be better. Also think about parking. It’s free at all our featured apartments and at most complexes you’ll look at. Parking downtown is a different story though, and could cost you, either in fees or parking tickets. This is a key question to ask yourself. Most students can’t afford that awesome place on the lake…not yet, anyway. You’re a student, and part of being a student is making the most of whatever you’ve got. It can be better to take a cheaper apartment and concentrate on your schoolwork than to have to work overtime at your job just to pay for that jacuzzi and lake view. The upside to this is, once you graduate and can afford a nice place, it will be that much sweeter. Will you ride your bike? Madison has some of the finest bike trails in the country. They won’t drop you off right at school, but they’ll get you close. If you plan to ride home after dark, consider a place on the side of town near the school. Bonus: Madison’s city buses have bike racks. Will you take the bus? Madison Metro is a robust bus system, but buses have their limitations. If you have to make one or two transfers, it could eat up your whole day. Plus, the hours are different at night and on weekends and holidays. Check the bus schedule before you commit to a place. Many of the apartments near the school are right on the bus line, which makes them a great choice. Student bus passes are available. Pick yours up at the accounting office in building B. 3 MADISON MEDIA INSTITUTE • MediaInstitute.edu • 800-236-4997 Pets Not every place allows pets. Some say no dogs, some say no cats. Some don’t mention it at all, so be sure to ask. They may have you put down a pet deposit. Whatever you do, DO NOT just move your pet in and hope your landlords won’t find out. They will. For dog parks in the area, visit http://www.cityofmadison.com/parks/dogparks/ No car? No pets? No problem! If you fit into this category, and you can handle a little noise, consider living in an apartment above a business on State Street. You’ll be near multiple bus stops and can walk to the little downtown market. These can be a little pricier (downtown apartments usually are), but they could be worth a look. Vital Numbers and Other Information Utilities Cable, and Internet Bus Transportation Your new apartment may pay for heat, but you’ll probably need to sign up with the power company for electricity. Charter Cable and Internet Charter.com 1-800-438-2427 Madison Metro - Passes available at school. cityofmadison.com/metro (mymetrobus.com) 608-266-4466 Madison Gas & Electric (MG&E) www.mge.com 608-252-7222 7am - 7pm Gas Hotline: 608-252-1111 Alliant Energy 1-800-255-4268 (1-800-ALLIANT) IF YOU SMELL GAS: (sulfur, rotten egg smell) Get everyone out of the house and call the gas company hotline immediately! The same thing goes if you and all your roommates get really nasty headaches at the same time. It could be a carbon monoxide leak. (Most places nowadays have mandatory carbon monoxide detectors.) A few notes on signing up for a utility service: Try to get the name of every person in the household on the account, for two reasons. First, any one of you would be authorized to call in and discuss the account. Second, it makes every person responsible. If you will be responsible for your own heating bill, ask about having your bill “averaged” so you don’t get socked with higher bills in the winter time. Renter’s insurance is pretty cheap (about 12 bucks a month), and worth the peace of mind even if you never have to use it. Google “renter’s insurance” for details. If you live in a basement, ask about flood insurance, too, as it’s not usually included. 800-236-4997 • MediaInstitute.edu • MADISON MEDIA INSTITUTE 4 M K 51 113 3 1 O 2 5 M Lake Mendota 3 2 4 4 2 1 1 1 1 10 9 3 151 2 8 6 7 6 12 18 Beltline Highway 1 14 151 18 5 MADISON MEDIA INSTITUTE • MediaInstitute.edu • 800-236-4997 13 14 5 12 6 7 4 5 6 90 94 2 2 3 Lake Monona 151 94 3 4 5 9 8 51 5 10 7 8 11 9 6 3 4 11 10 90 12 51 Grocery Stores Drug Stores Healthcare Bank & Credit Unions Gyms Bus Transfer Points Grocery Stores 1. Dishwasher? 24 hour laundry? You may not get everything you want, but it’s good to have a starting point. Be prepared – You will fill out a lot of forms during this search. It will go a lot more smoothly if you have all your information ready. This includes your current and former addresses; names, addresses, and phone numbers of landlords and employers; and any banking information you may have. You may also need names, addresses, and phone numbers for your references--be sure to let them know to expect a phone call. If you don’t have a rental history, you may need a co-signer, and if so, you’ll need their driver’s license number and signature. You may also need a pay stub from your job. Plus, most landlords will run a credit check on you, so have your Social Security number handy. Try to see units in the daytime – You’ll want to know how much natural light an apartment gets. It also helps to show you what shape the apartment is in and if it may need some work. Do a careful walk-through of any unit you’re serious about – The best time to ask about repairs and improvements is before you commit. Most complexes will have you fill out a form listing any previous damage you see upon move-in so you’re not responsible for it later. 7 Some questions to ask – • How’s the water pressure? (Turn on the shower!) • How many electrical outlets are there and where are they? • How big is the water heater? • Is there enough closet space or will you need extra storage? Read your lease thoroughly – Make sure you understand it. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Never go to a craigslist property alone! That said, craigslist can be a great place to find apartments that don’t show up in typical rental magazines, like private rentals and sublets. The Tenant Resource Center Tenant Resource Center (TRC) offers free housing counseling for tenants and landlords interested in learning more about their rental rights and responsibilities under Wisconsin law. Rental Rights Phone: (608) 257-0006 Toll-free: 1-877-238-RENT tenantresourcecenter.org Timeline Three months out is a great time to being calling complexes for pricing and requirements. Try to schedule appointments to see any places you’re interested in. Most complexes require 60 days notice before a tenant moves out, so two months out is the time to call your favorite places to ask about openings. Once you’ve settled on a place, don’t hesitate! Sign the lease, pay your deposit, start collecting boxes, and get ready for your move! Featured Apartments M K 51 12 4 5 6 1. The Meadows 151 2. Eastpointe 113 3. Ridgewood Trails 3 O 4.
