that you had so much
to gain by participating
in Operation Feliz Navidad 5k run/walk. This community event can and will make
a difference in the lives of
children. You’ll be surprised to
know how many lives one gift
can make to a child who may
otherwise go without having
a gift to open on Christmas
morning. We encourage everyone to support Operation Feliz

spread some holiday cheer to

children within the San Juan

Operation Feliz Navidad 5k

Participants are encouraged to

ort Buchanan, get ready,
because it’s only going
to happen one night this
year! Our New Year’s
Eve Celebration! The tradition of New Year’s Eve originated thousands of years ago
in the ancient Babylon. Ancient
citizens used the sun and moon
to decide the “first” day of the
year. It wasn’t until Julius Caesar
implemented the Julian calendar
that January 1st became what
has been considered one of the
oldest holidays still celebrated.
Every year as the clock nears
midnight on December 31st,
the eyes of the world turn to
the dazzling lights and bustling
energy of ringing in a New Year.
It is not just another date at the
end of the month; it is a chance
to bid farewell to the old year,
make amends, and look ahead
to the endless possibilities of a
New Year.
W
ith excitement and
wonder in the air,
New Year’s Eve is a
day that is cherished
by people of every age. Join
Family and MWR, as we celebrate this momentous occasion,
on December 31 from 8:00 pm
to 2:00 am at the Community
Club and Conference Center.
The celebration features live
musical entertainment, party
favors, and an exquisite buffet
which includes traditional roasted
pernil, chicken breast with parsley, baked tilapia in lemon herb,
arroz con gandules, guineitos
en escabeche, vegetables, salad, Asian noodle salad, pasta,
chocolate cake, vanilla custard,
and fresh fruits with whipped
cream. At midnight, delight in
savory bowl of asopao and a
toast of Champagne. Tickets are
2016
$60.00 each for ages 15 and up,
$30.00 ages 9-14, and FREE for
children 8 years and younger.

SPREAD THE MAGIC OF THE HOLIDAYS
WARMING HEARTS BY GIVING...
LIFE WITH US OCTOBER 2015
WWW.BUCHANANMWR.COM
Sports & Fitness
THIS IS THE TIME OF THE YEAR WHEN MOST PEOPLE GAIN WEIGHT AND LOOSE TONE
OVERALL WITH OVERINDULGENCE, SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND EXPOSURE TO FINANCIAL AND
SOCIAL STRESSORS. BEING AWARE OF THIS, YOU CAN MAKE THE CHOICE TO KEEP THESE FACTORS
UNDER CONTROL!
The holidays are a time to
celebrate, and make the most
of it. We eat and we indulge in
delicious holiday goodies with
family, friends, and co-workers.
It’s almost an unspoken rule
that, with the holidays, comes
unlimited eating and minimal
workouts, but this year, you
have a choice. There are ways
you can eat those extra slices
of pie without feeling overly
guilty.
According to the Washington
Center for Dentistry, top personal and fitness trainers in the
world outlined tips for staying
fit during the Holidays
(1) BUY YOUR FAVORITE
CHOCOLATE AND EAT
ONE PIECE EVERY DAY.
Never deprive yourself from
your favorite holiday treats;
practice moderation.
(2) PRIOR TO ATTENDING
ANY EVENT, EAT A LEAN,
HIGH-PROTEIN MEAL
AND DRINK PLENTY OF
WATER.
(4) ALLOW YOURSELF
TO TASTE ANYTHING
YOU WANT, EAT A BITE OF
THE THINGS YOU REALLY
LOVE.
Give yourself a little leeway,
too—it will be a great motivator in January.
(5) STAY DILIGENTLY ACTIVE AND STAY ON YOUR
NORMAL SCHEDULE.
(3) DEVELOP A SHORT
TERM HOLIDAY GOAL
TO CONTINUE A REGIMENTAL WORKOUT
ROUTINE.
(6) AVOID OVERINDULGING DURING THE
HOLIDAYS, START YOUR
MEALS WITH A LARGE
SALAD.
This way, you fill your stomach
with a high-nutrition, a
low-calorie meal that doesn’t
allow room for overeating.
(7) TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE 80/20 RULE
AT THE HOLIDAYS,
ALLOWING YOURSELF
CARTE BLANCHE 20 PERCENT OF THE TIME FOR
100 PERCENT OF THE
RESULTS BOTH MENTALLY
AND PHYSICALLY.
The holidays are all about
celebration and indulgence
both of which are essential
elements of a healthy lifestyle.
Loads of sugar will pack on
the pounds, but on the other
hand, depriving yourself is not
healthy, either.

Water softens cravings and
helps you eat foods with more
moderation.
If you eat three cookies at
a holiday party, don’t skip
breakfast the next morning to
make up for it. Just make sure
to walk more, take the stairs,
and finish the day with a light
dinner to make up for the caloric excess.

CYSS STAFF EXPANDS ON SAFETY MEASURES
The training provides the staff with
guidance on how to prepare for and
respond to active shooter crisis situations. On completion of the series of
trainings, the staff will be able to:
• describe the actions to take when
confronted with an active shooter
• recognize potential violence indicators;
• describe actions to take to prevent
and prepare for potential active
shooter incidents; and
• describe how to manage the
consequences of an active shooter
incident

The Child, Youth and School (CYS)
Services has been enhancing its preparedness on active shooting awareness. The Department of Homeland
Security (DHS) has begun a series of
training to better prepare CYSS Staff
to deal with an active shooter situation. This training will help raise
awareness of behaviors that represent
pre-incident indicators and characteristics of active shooters. In many cases,
there is no pattern or method to the
selection of victims by an active shooter, and these situations are by their
very nature unpredictable and evolve
quickly.

What’s Up?
At Fort Buchanan, we recognize
the sacrifices of our Military
Families. We invite the community
to join us as we extend a heartfelt
thank you to our Military Families
at the Mini Circus on January 28 &
29, 2016.
The Mini Circus is one way Fort
Buchanan seeks to show appreciation for Military Families who have
shown their heart in the face of adversity, time and time again. You
give up so much to serve alongside your Soldier. You give up
your homes and risk storing special
memories and keepsakes that may
be destroyed, during the move.
You uproot your children every twothree years; withdrawing them from
school and wishing for a smooth
transition. You leave behind family,
friends, and loved ones; missing
numerous birthdays, graduations,
and holidays. And, when your
service member is deployed, you
wait hoping and praying that your
spouse, son, daughter, or father
will return safe and sound. In the
meantime, you carry your phones
with you everywhere, “just in case”
your Soldier calls. And when they
call, you make sure to be remain
positive because you want your
Soldier be 100% focused on their
mission.

ENJOYING THE
HOLIDAYS AND COPING
WITH THE SEASON’S
STRESS
This season is not about buying happiness with tons of gifts,
but to share the holiday spirit in peace, harmony, and enjoyment.
By: Wilda Diaz,
Family Advocacy Program Manager
The stress of the holidays
could trigger sadness and depression for some people. This
time of the year is especially
difficult because there may be
an expectation of feeling cheerful and generous. Some people
may compare their emotions to
what they assume others are
experiencing or what they are
supposed to feel. There are a
few things that could increase
the stress during the holidays
(e.g., grief, loneliness, finances, divorce, away from relatives/friends).
There are ways to prevent the
holiday stress and sadness
specially, if you are away from
home or loved ones. Seek
out for community social or
religious events; volunteer time
to help others; if you are going
through a grief process find
someone to talk about your
feelings and realize that it is
normal to feel sad; set financial boundaries by creating
a budget; involve family
members while planning the
budget and events; this will
help them to understand how
much money the family can
afford to spend. The stress of
financial hardship during economic recessions tend to make
individuals feel ashamed and
sad. It is important to say no
if you cannot participate in an
event that you cannot afford.
This season is not about buying
happiness with tons of gifts,
but to share the holiday spirit
in peace, harmony, and enjoyment.
It is also important to maintain
your health habits. Avoiding
excess eating is essential as this
will add to stress and guilt after
the holidays. Include healthy
snacks and physical activities.
Enjoy the traditional Puerto
Rican Christmas food such as
pasteles, lechón asado, arroz
con dulce, tembleque, and
other traditional holiday foods
that give Puerto Ricans a distinct identity from the rest of
the world. But, remember that
moderation is the key in maintaining a healthy life style.
If for any reason you are feeling
sad, just remember that we are
indeed blessed to be able to
celebrate the holidays in this island for so many reasons to include, great weather, traditional parrandas (group of people
gathered together to surprise
another friend, usually after
Army Community Service
holiday season goes by too
fast. The lights, decorations,
parties and all the fun comes
and goes before you know.
But, we do not have that problem in Puerto Rico. We have
one of the longest Christmas
seasons in the world. We
begin our holidays on Thanksgiving Day and end it almost
in February. There are also
many free and fun events that
we can join. Therefore, enjoy the holiday season by
experiencing the Navidad
in Puerto Rico. And do not
forget the Three Kings Day’s
tradition during the evening
of January 5th. On that night
children go to their yards with
empty shoe boxes to
cut grass for the camels
to eat. The boxes are
then placed under the
beds.
During the night Los Reyes
come and while the camels
eat the grass Los Reyes leave
gifts or/and sweets for the
children. These are indeed
unforgettable memories for
our children.
To conclude, avoid the holiday
stress by making a budget and
planning in advance. Seek
for events and social groups
if you feel lonely. Enjoy the
traditional Christmas foods
in moderation. Enjoy the
weather, the friendly people
from Puerto Rico, and most of

blessed Holiday Season!

10:00 pm). This is a version of
Christmas caroling. The parranderos sing and play different instruments such as guiros, maracas, palitos, guitars
or/and any object they can
make musical sounds with.
Once the owner of the house
opens the door for the parranderos they are invited in for
refreshments, asopao, music
and dance. Then, everyone
leaves (including the owners
of that house), to parrandear
and surprise another friend.
This is another opportunity
to celebrate the Holiday spirit
among Family and friends.
In other places it seems as the
