As a volunteer/staff fitness instructor, workout center coach or personal trainer you
are in a unique position to participate in the YMCA Mission to develop people in
spirit mind and body through your work as fitness professional. You live this mission
every time you provide motivation or encouragement to a member; answer a
question or give an exercise tip, teach a challenging fitness class or assist by planning
a safe and effective fitness program. This is a BIG responsibility, the YMCA of
Edmonton serves over 17,000 adult members which translates into about 4000
participants in group fitness classes every week, 2600 workout users per day and
about 700 individual fitness programs per month.


This commitment to support and serve over 17000 members takes an immense
amount of your energy and demands of your fitness expertise, skills and knowledge.
In order to help our members and participants grow in spirit mind and body you too
need focus on your own personal and professional growth in order to maintain your
energy/motivation and to remain current with fitness trends and knowledge. The
YMCA of Edmonton strongly supports and promotes ongoing professional
development of fitness staff and volunteers, and the Annual YMCA of Edmonton
Spring Training event is an important component of that commitment. The theme of

this year’s 11 annual Spring Training is “Shaping the Future in Fitness” which
reflects our intention to be recognized as a community leader in Health and
Wellness and this starts with a commitment to your development as a fitness leader.
Overview
This year’s Spring Training Conference provides you with a fantastic combination of
opportunities to network with others, gain knowledge, to practice new skills and to
become re-energized as a fitness leader. Whether you are a new or experienced
volunteer/staff or member of the group fitness or individual conditioning team this
year’s conference has something for everyone and is an event not to be missed. The
organizing committee is delighted to bring national presenters and leaders of the
Fitness Industry. Together, their experience and knowledge of the latest fitness
trends and research will ensure that you come away with new ideas and skills.
As a 19 year member of the YMCA of Edmonton Health and Fitness team and
Training Educator in the YMCA Canada Fitness Certification Program, I strongly
encourage you to attend sessions at this conference. I know you will enjoy and
benefit from the training the organizing committee has prepared for the weekend
and I hope you will get an opportunity to share and network with other leaders
taking back some new ideas and leaving more energized and motivated as a YMCA
Fitness Leader.

Overview
General
The Spring Training Fitness Conference is brought to you by the YMCA of
Edmonton Association.
Who should attend?
The conference is targeted at exercise and wellness professionals, certified
group fitness and personal trainers passionate about furthering their
knowledge. So if you are a personal trainer, gym instructor, group exercise
instructor this event is for you!
Timing of day
This one day conference runs from 8am – 5:30pm with over 15 sessions to
choose, broken into 60 or 90 minutes. Please refer to the schedule for full
information.

Continuing Education Credits (CECs)
The conference is eligible for YMCA, CanFitPro and AFLCA continuing
education credits. Please note, if you are not certified by either agencies,
make sure you consult with your certifying agency for CECs acceptance.

How the sessions work
The conference is held one day only (April 16) involving over 15 sessions!
With up to 6 to 7 sessions running at any given time. There is also a series of
pre and post conference certifications (Apr 15 & 17).

Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.

Delegates Package Pick Up
The Spring Training conference will be open at 7:15 am for delegates
packages pick up. At this time delegates can review sessions selected and
exchange session with other if their requested session was not available.
Hungry on the day?
The Daily Planet Cafeteria will be open, with a basic selection of food and
drink. If you have specific dietary needs it’s a good idea to bring your own
special treats just in case the cafeteria does not have anything specific to suit
Cancellation or Change of Speaker
The YMCA of Edmonton Association reserves the right to cancel or change
speakers due to unforeseen circumstances.

This year we will be operating an online handouts library. Access to this
library will be provided via a link 3 weeks prior to the conference to
download the conference handout.
Airport
If you are flying to Edmonton, Shuttles are available to and from the Airport
at approximately every 15 minutes. A local rate applies.
If you are travelling from within Edmonton, we would like to encourage you
to take the LRT and get off at the Bay Enterprise Station downtown leaving
you on the same block of the YMCA.

The conference is full of activities… remember to bring your workout gear so
you can take part in the practical sessions (venue has shower/changing
facilities).

Be inspired by this class which blends the best of yoga and fitness together
in a powerful and rhythmic flow of asana (physical postures) and breath
work. Using sun-salutations as a foundation, we will work to build the

balance and core strength. This class will challenge and excite you, yet leave
you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated by the end. All level of students

YMCA Spring Training Presenters
Marjorie O'Connor, BEd., PE, ACSM, AFLCA Trainer, Can-Fit-Pro
and Stott Pilates certified and Nike Athlete,
Marjorie is the owner of Fit International. A respected
international fitness presenter and aerobic champion, Marjorie
was honoured as a “Woman of Vision”, the “Women Of
Distinction” award in Athletics, Recreation and Fitness, the
recipient of the “Mall Peepre” memorial award and the “Celebration of Women in
Fitness” award from the Running Room. Marjorie is an ambassador for
Activedmonton receiving the City of Edmonton community service award and is the
fitness expert with the CAAWS/Nike Girls @ Play program. She is a very proud mom
of Keltie and Kienan.
Andrew Koppejan - MScPT, CPMA Physical
Therapist Andrew is a licensed physiotherapist and a graduate from
the University of Alberta. He recently completed his medical
acupuncture training (UofA). His clinical practice focuses on treating
musculoskeletal problems for a wide variety of ages and activity
levels. Andrew has a special interest in addressing movement-based
impairments with corrective exercise to ensure long-term recovery.
He currently works at Meridian Health a multi-disciplinary health clinic in
Edmonton, AB.
April Smith has a degree from the University of Alberta in Recreation
and Leisure Studies, is a Can Fit Pro Certified Personal Trainer and is a
Certified Shift Work Wellness Specialist and Master Trainer with the
Shifting to Wellness Program. She is the owner of Vitalize Initiatives Inc
- www.vitalizeinitiatives.com a company that specializes in corporate
wellness. She has been in the field of wellness and adult instruction
since 1996. She started in corporate wellness in the Oil Sands in Alberta, in 2001
and now organizes Workplace Wellness Initiatives all over Canada. She has a
passion for assisting organizations in increasing the health and wellness of their
most valuable resource (the team of people working for them).
Paul Plakas has been a personal trainer for 20 years. He has trained
every level of fitness from homemaker to professional athlete. Paul
has been on television for the past nine years doing weight loss
documentaries. Four years he worked on “Taking It Off” and the
past five years on “X-Weighted”. Both shows are Gemini Award
winners and can be seen on the Slice Network. Paul just finished
taping season five of X-Weighted – Families, to be seen on Thursday
nights at 6pm MST. When not working in television Paul trains clients at his
personal training studio in Edmonton, Alberta called “Custom Fit”. In his
recreational time he enjoys, mountain biking, hockey, cross country skiing and
working out with weights. The motto he lives by is “Pain is temporary, quitting
lasts forever.”
Lance R. Zein - graduated from the University of Alberta with a
Bachelor of Phys Ed and Physical Therapy. Certified in Agatsu
Kettlebell, he has been in the fitness industry for over 25 years
teaching fitness classes from Yoga to spin to Super Fit. In the last 30
years Lance has competed in Decathlon, Gymnastics, Ironman,
Adventure Racing and Recreation al Rock Climbing.
Lance’s mission is to empower individuals to live a healthy life. Drawing from a solid
foundation of education and multidisciplinary athletic experience, Lance offers
clients programs that progressively, systematically and safely achieve their specific
goals.
Robyn Holm - AFAA, BCRPA, CanFitPro FIS, CPR/First Aid
Robyn fell in love with fitness when she discovered the beauty of
weight lifting at the tender age of 14. With more than 8 years in the
fitness industry, as a Group Exercise Manager, Ballroom Instructor
and currently as a Zumba® Education Specialist, Robyn shares her
passion for fitness and dance through her infectious personality and
drive towards excellence with the instructors she trains.
Charlton Diaz is well known in Edmonton dance scene for his energy
and innovation as an instructor, performer and choreographer. He
started dancing at the young age of 9 and continues to embrace
dancing by sharing with others his great talent as a dance teacher.
Influenced by the legendary Michael Jackson and Street Jazz, his
creativity on the dance floor stems from a command of musicality
and connection with other dancers, features of his dance that make him such an
engaging performer. As an instructor at the Don Wheaton Family YMCA, he
concentrates on the technique of these elements at all levels, teaching his students
the ability to adapt the style of their dance to that of the music and to create a
dynamic dance with the group. Charlton's energy and focus on fun are a constant
backdrop to all of his work.
Jenny Cheung is a registered occupational therapist, who graduated
with a Bachelor of Science degree in occupational therapy from the
University of Alberta in 2003. Jenny's love for group fitness started at
the YMCA at the age of 16 with her mother. With over 10 years
leading group fitness classes, Jenny also runs a business promoting
health and wellness and making fitness "FUNctional"!
Gary Johnson came to the YMCA five years ago to rehabilitate a
running injury. Aquafit classes sparked a renewed interest in the
water. One and a half years ago he "took the plunge" and became an
aquafit instructor. With an academic background in psychology, he has
been working in the mental health field for over forty years. Health
promotion is the core of his professional life and in his role as a volunteer. Every
time he enters the YMCA he has two goals; making a difference and learning
something new.
Vicky Lau, a Registered Dietitian, graduated with distinction from the
University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition.
She has been actively involved in the food industry over the past five
years and is currently a Supervisor at the Alberta Health Services
Edmonton Food Service Centre.
Vicky has many years of practice in dance and fitness; her experience
varies from competitive activities to leisure workouts for a healthier lifestyle. She
believes that a healthy, balanced diet plays a key role in optimizing an individual’s
level of physical performance. Whether it be weight loss, chronic disease
prevention, increased physical performance, or overall wellness and healthy living,
Vicky can provide one-on-one or group nutritional counseling suited to her clients’
needs.
Trudy Housen – YMCA Trainer, YMCA Group Fitness
Trudy’s fitness journey started over eight years ago as an aquafit
instructor for the Castle Downs Family YMCA. After retiring from her
career; Trudy decided to keep working at what she really loved Fitness.
Trudy is the facilitator of the Get Fit For Active Living program in Edmonton, for the
Canadian Centre for Activity & Aging University of Western Ontario and a Volunteer
Facilitator of the “Arthritis Self Management Program” for the Arthritis society. She
holds a Stott Pilates and Fusion Fitness certification. Also under her belt she has
Aqua, Core Strength and Choreography certifications from the YMCA. Currently,
Trudy is the group fitness coordinator at the Castle Downs Family YMCA, where her
ability to encourage and motivate is evident in all the fitness classes she instructs
for older adults.
Melany James - BPE (lululemon athletica Ambassador)
The owner of Soul Strength Yoga & Fitness Inc. has been involved with
fitness and a variety of sports throughout her life and is excited to share
her passion for physical activity with others. Since completing her
Physical Education Degree at the University of Alberta in 2003, she has
been personal training and teaching a variety of group fitness classes.
Her yoga journey truly began in 2002 and she has maintained a regular personal
practice ever since. She has since had the opportunity to learn from many of the
great yoga teachers including Hart Lazer, Mark Darby, Eddie Modestini and others.
With her background in physical education, sports, and martial arts, along with her
experience and love for working with people, teaching yoga was a natural
progression.
Lisa A. Workman - M.A., CSEP-CEP, AFLCA Trainer

YMCA Spring Training Presenters
Angela Rosebrugh, BA, RMT, AFLCA
Angela began her YMCA romance over 8 years ago. With toddler in
tow, she began her fitness instructor initiation with step aerobics.
Over the years she added many other class formats and quickly fell in
love with spin. She has been training and competing in triathlons for
12 years and achieved a long cherished goal of completing Penticton
Ironman in 2009. She has a busy life with two daughters and a career as a massage
therapist. She has her own corporate chair massage business as well as a table
massage practice at Champion Chiropractic and Sports Injury Clinic.
Dru Davids - Canfitpro FIS, Zumba,
Becoming a certified Zumba® Instructor was an easy decision for Dru;
the day she took her first class, she was hooked by the music, the
rhythms and the incredible energy! Having a lifetime passion for dance
and fitness, she knew instantly that she wanted to share her talents
and inspire others!
Dru became a certified instructor in 2009 and now teaches classes at the Don
Wheaton Family YMCA and through numerous community facilities in Edmonton.
Her obvious love for teaching and welcoming inclusiveness allows people of all ages
and Zumba® skills to really let loose!
Leanna Martens CanFitPro-PTS, ICF-ACC, NLP, NAIT Student
Leanna has been in the personal training industry for 12 years. She
was a Nationally ranked fitness competitor and sponsored athlete,
Hawaiian Tropic and fitness model.
Leanna was the first to create a functional fitness competitor
development program in Edmonton and is now leading the field in her
new area of growing knowledge, behavior change and fitness.
She attended Erickson College International in 2005 and earned her International
Coaching Federations (ICF)- (ACC) Associate Certified Coach designation, and served
on the board of directors for the ICF-Edmonton Coaching Chapter in 2010.
Leanna has created a groundbreaking behavior change model for women who have
a history of yo-yo dieting called, “Breakthrough Weightloss”, and is currently
working on behavior change programs for personal trainers and their clients.
In addition to teaching Zumba®, Dru is a Canfitpro Fitness Instructor Specialist and a
successful Graphic & Web Designer.
Keri Bowzaylo - CanFitPro PTS & FIS, BBU Pilates Mat, Reformer,
Apparatus, Tower, and Core Align, Bender Ball Master Trainer
Spending years battling the weight loss rollercoaster herself, Keri has
focused on motivating people of all ages to get out and do things that
they once thought were impossible. After losing over 55 lbs she has
found her passion in climbing those mountains in ultra-marathons
such as Death Race. Keri’s clients and classes range from national level athletes to
seniors working on bringing out the athlete within us all. Keri enjoys working with
teens to help them create healthy lifestyle choices that they can carry through to
adulthood. As a mother of two teenagers herself she thinks the best lesson we can
give our kids is being a good role model and by living that healthy lifestyle
ourselves. Keri brings her energy and passion to her classes and clients hoping to
infect them with the fitness bug!!
Dr. Sarah Wu - BSc, DC, received her Doctor of Chiropractic degree
from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto, after
earning her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta.
She is the owner of Momentum Chiropractic Clinic, a collaborative
centre that employs the expertise of chiropractic, massage therapy
and acupuncture practitioners. Her interests include sport injuries, maternity and
pediatric care.
Sarah’s passion for “motivating through educating” led her to become a William
Lutsky YMCA Group Fitness Instructor in Core Training since 2007 and she also
holds a Can-Fit-Pro Personal Training Specialist certification. She believes in helping
individuals play an active role in optimizing their well-being through education and
awareness.
Jason Gemmer, AFLCA
Jason from Las Vegas, Nevada, is a Military Veteran of the
United States Army. He has been in the fitness industry for over
15 years ranking his experience in Mix Martial Arts. Presently

he is in his 3 year Bachelor’s of Physical Education with a
minor in Nutrition at the University of Alberta. His dedication
rd
and commitment to martial arts has helped him to receive 3
place in the World Championship Kumite in 1998. Jason was the strength and
conditioning coach at Pound-4-Pound boxing gym in Las Vegas, Nevada were he
trained alongside multiple professional fighters and boxing trainers like Anthony
Martin, and Eddie Salas for 3 years. Jason can be found training at the Don
Wheaton YMCA, and teaching at U of A, and other facilities in the city of Edmonton.
Tammy Goodwin – BPE, YMCA Trainer, YMCA TE
Tammy is the centre manager of the Castledowns Family YMCA. She
has been sharing her love for fitness for the past 20 years. She holds a
certification in cycle, deep water and core/strength. Her most
creative fitness class was Heavy Metal Boxing Step she ran for 8
weeks in Fort McMurray for a boys high school PE class for the school
connected to the YMCA. However, Tammy, favorite class is Music Video Cycle fit.
She is a Fitness Trainer for YMCA Canada since 2003 and a Training Educator for
YMCA Canada since 2007.
Tammy’s hobbies include driving anything on wheels; bicycles, motorbikes, quads,
cars... Tammy has a need for SPEED!! 

Jared Smith is partner and co-founder of Incite, the recognized
thought leader in marketing that strengthens relationships. Incite
specializes in managing market research, planning, branding, creative
design, and long term marketing strategies for organizations across
Canada.
A native Edmontonian, Jared graduated from the University of Alberta
in 1997 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Jared’s background includes
entrepreneurial and marketing roles with local and international organizations,
including a market research and strategy firm founded by Jared in 1997 to
represent Canadian organizations in China. In August of 2010 he helped Chair the
CBCF Linkpink Lance Armstrong luncheon and Ride where they raised $1.4 Million
for the foundation. Jared was recently recognized as one of Edmonton’s Top 40
Under 40 by Venture magazine.
Damara Lopes
With South American roots, Latin Rhythms have been infused into
Damara life since she was a child. She began teaching and sharing
her Love for Latin Rhythms and movements over 10 years ago. In
2002, Damara was awarded 1st place at the World Salsa
Championships in Miami, Florida. In 2003, Damara represented Canada at the
International Puerto Rican Salsa Congress as a member of Salsa team Canada.
Damara is currently certified to teach Zumba B1, ZumbaB2, Aqua Zumba, Zumba
Gold, Zumba Toning, and Zumbatomic.
