Timberstone Junior High School. For several weeks this fall, students in the
reading class of Tammy Gordon and Melissa Dubiel (with assistance from the entire
school) collected donations for our feline friends here at Paws and Whiskers. On Monday October 26th, just before Halloween, PAWS was “Treated” to a visit by many of
the students and their teachers, as they dropped off the donated items collected.
On the left, the two instructors can be seen in front of the pile of donations along
with Santino one of the students. Continued to page 4.

HO! HO! HO! Bissett Claus Here. I need to be very serious and
pass this information along to you. #GivingTuesdayTM is a national
day of giving at the start of the holiday season that celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations. GivingTuesday is December 1st this year.
Toledo Community Foundation is supporting local nonprofits in this
effort by encouraging donations through a matching grant opportunity.
The Foundation will match the donations that qualified organizations
receive on December 1st, dollar-for-dollar, up to $1,000. PAWS participated in this program last year and we received a $1,000 matching
grant. Please help us earn a matching grant again this year by making
a donation to PAWS on December 1st. Donations can be made in any
amount, either on our website or at the Shelter. We hope you will join
in this national day of giving by contributing and helping us continue the good we do for homeless
cats and kittens in the community.
My feline friends here at Paws and Whiskers really need your help. This year we have had one
event after another involving some pretty ugly injuries to a number of homeless felines. We took
them in and tended their wounds and made them whole again. This, however, was not without cost.
Our veterinary budget was blown completely out of the water and we find ourselves with a
$30,000.00 deficit……..money well spent as most of the care we provided was successful and my
friends have new forever homes, but we need to deal with shoring up our budget. Please donate on
“GivingTuesday” and with any other donations you may be able to spare.
2015 has seen a dramatic increase in adoptions as we are experiencing our best
adoption year since 2008. On October 1st of this year we passed our 2014
adoption total. We have averaged over an adoption a day for the past 11 months
which is the first time we have managed this since May 2008. Of course increased adoptions translates to additional intakes which require our care and
attention which is also an additional strain on the budget.
Thanks to the great PAWS supporters we are off the street and have a
home. PLEASE DONATE so Paws and Whiskers can continue its work.
Somemes you choose the cat. Somemes the cat chooses you.
Six years
ago, the cat formerly known as Lucky came from Paws and Whiskers to live with me. When Sam, my wonderful black cat, died, his brother Dave was lost, so I knew I had to bring in a new companion for him. At
least, that’s the story I told myself. I went to Paws and Whiskers fully intending to adopt an older cat, but
every one I took to the playroom hissed at other cats on the way there, so I kept looking. That’s when
Lucky reached out of his cage and snagged my attention—and my sleeve. When I took him from his
cage, he purred and head butted me all the way into the playroom, and he didn’t mind any of the cats that
were already there. Still, not being sure, I didn’t adopt him that day, but came back the next and took this
Dave & Twinkl
one-year-old yellow tabby that chose me to my home and to Dave. It only took a day before they were
sleeping together as if they had been littermates, and we were a two-cat household again.Oh, and about his
name: I was the one who was Lucky that he reached out and grabbed me, but he was renamed. Lucky was all the colors of a Twinkie—
yellow, a little brown, and a white chin—so he became Twink!
If you are a supporter of Paws and Whiskers, you know how appealing a kitten—any kitten—is. Having a
slight allergy to cats, and having two live with me anyway, meant I really didn’t need (and maybe shouldn’t
Stache
have) another cat. So I limited my volunteering to fund-raising and things that didn’t take me into the building for extended periods of time. Then I went in and saw a cage full of black and white kittens. One of
them had markings resembling a glorious white handlebar mustache with white sideburns to go with it. I
fell in love with his face. Every time I went into the shelter for the next four times, I hoped that kitten had
been adopted. And every time I went in, he was still there.
Finally, I could resist no longer, and that is how ‘Stache became my second Paws and Whiskers cat. He’s
now four years old, and is still an equal opportunity mugger of his older brothers, Dave and Twink.

From the Mail Box
Hello P&W, Luey is adjusting well to our family. He hid under furniture the first 24 hours (Saturday). Sunday, he
came out and met my parents (for the first time, with no fear or issues). Today, he was running around like the lord
of the manor. He feels comfortable enough to sleep out in the open, smiles a lot, and is mostly unbothered by
our 3 year old daughter though her exuberance spooks Luey sometimes and we explain to her that Luey is just
a scared little baby and she needs to be calmer and quieter around him. Luey also likes his 6 ft cat tree. He
can escape there if he needs to or under furniture, though he doesn't go there often. No issues with the litter
box, scratching (he uses the tree and second scratching post), or a raw diet (he loves raw tuna and chicken).
We'll visit the vet on Friday morning. Just one thing: chewing on electrical wires. I understand he may be teething at his age. Are there cat chews you could recommend?
I have a picture of Luey sleeping. He likes the wool blanket and beaver fur pillow on the couch To date, he
sleeps in the living room under a table or couch. Once he slept under our bed and I put a sheepskin under
there for him. That's OK with us. He can sleep wherever he wants.

like lying on her pants shelf in the closet but have to do a little rearranging to give myself adequate room to nestle in which involves pushing
some of the pants on the floor. No one comes into this space so there is no one else to appreciate the beautiful mottled pattern my fur

not pleased me.
Complaint!! I think the newness is wearing off before training is finished. I was relegated to second place when three other nuns came for
supper and discussion. Although one of them did ooh and aah about me. I was compared to Dakota, a silver blue tabby with strong Maine
Coon characteristics who has gone to the big litter box in the sky and then to a cat the oohing nun lives with now. Then I was taken in my
carry cage to the vet in Sylvania for a wellness check and a rabies shot and my new keeper was praised for my adoption. I was praised for
my beauty and sleekness and for losing two pounds off my May weight. This morning I was told that when there is a computer on her lap
there is not room for me. If she tells me I can be traded in for a younger model, I will bite her ankle. Living with a writer has its advantages
because she spends time with her eyes closed and fingers poised over the keyboard. I will soon figure out how to exploit those moments to
send seditious messages to the cats of the world…..except what if she's taken away by homeland security…...many difficult things to consider. A big meeeow to all the inmates at PAWS and to their devoted staff.
Dear Bissett, I have managed to avoid letting Fang send another complaining email by simply closing my computer; just as the best way to
keep my closet shelves from disaster is simply to close the closet door so that His Felinity can't get in to rearrange and dump. If I wrote an
essay about this past month, I could give it any number of titles: Life with a Shape Shifter, My Ongoing Enslavement, Let the Buyer Beware
of a Reduced-Price Cat, or simply, I Brought Home the Wrong Cat--Someone at Paws and Whiskers
Made a Nefarious Switch in Order to Get Rid of a Varmint. I arrived at Paws and Whiskers August 18
in good faith, asked for a mature cat who could adapt to living with a little old lady. Of the many
meowy, cute, cuddly choices available, I chose the cat who turned his back on me and ignored me,
paid His Snoot's ransom, signed about a hundred pledges that I understand the obligations of a cat
adopter, and set about preparing my apartment for a new lodger who would respect my space as I
would respect his. When I brought him home August 24th, I let him explore, and left him alone as
he chose to hide under my bed. Within another day or so, he found all the purchases and arrangements made for him and began staking out the rest of his turf which, of course, overlaps mine. I am
saddled with an eleven-year-old kitten who is alternatively the Big Meow, Hamlet's father's ghost,
cuddle-bug, Dora the Explorer, Everest sherpa, spelunker of kitchen cabinets, snoozer and dozer,
night crawler, and escape artist who will not be found if he doesn't want to be. The benefit of being
black--hiding in shadows in plain site and watching me hunt. All of this proves the superiority of the
species--not ours, that's for sure. If you still have contact with Panther's owner, please thank him for his eleven years of service to His Specialty now called Black Fang. I suspect Panther gave him as much enjoyment and amusement as Black Fang provides--unless, of course,
this is the wrong cat. Only the staff at Paws and Whiskers knows for sure. Best regards! Marya Czech, now a much younger little old lady...

10,000 Adoptions
10,000 continued from page 1 Besides
her own cute fluffy personality, Pebbles took home with her
a large basket of toys, treats and food, a pet bed and catnip logs from Krafting for Kitties, one year free vet care at Sylvania Veterinary Hospital, and a gift card from PetCo.
Angela, who has adopted from PAWS before in 2006 and 2003, had recently lost one of
her feline friends and was looking for another companion for the others. The upper left
picture shows Pebbles reeling Angela in, while the upper right is Pebbles showing Angela all of the goodies she gets. The lower picture has Angela completing the adoption
papers for Adoption Coordinator Pam Unger.
For our 10,000th adoption we made up a special T-shirts which
is pictured to the left. Each of the “0”s has a different colored cat
head in the middle. Shirts are $15.00 and we have four left, two
medium and two large. We have had a number of request for the
shirts and we are looking at a possible additional run for long
and short sleeve Ts’ and sweatshirts. If anyone is interested in
ordering a special size or a sweat shirt please contact the shelter and make your wishes
known. If we have enough interest we will then place an order.
Timberstone continued from page 1.
Timberstone engages its
students in community service drives in which the
students will research an organization, the needs of
the organization and the items they can use. The
class then conducts a school wide drive to collect items needed by the organization. Savannah
McKenzie, a PAWS volunteer and a Timberstone student, suggested Paws and Whiskers for this project. Pictured at the left, Savanna and classmate Audrey Roberts pose in front of the pile of donations holding one of the signs they had put up at school. What looks like a spot in the heart (lower
center of the poster) is actually a
paw print from Savanna’s cat.
November 11th & 14th were the dates for
this Fall’s Community Days at Elder Beerman.at the Westgate location. PAWS volunteers sold coupon books, for
the event, at $5.00 each. 100% of the sales from these coupon books
comes directly to PAWS. Our volunteers manned tables selling books
during October and November and then during the Community Days
Event. Kathy Simoni, 419-382-9549, headed up the event and will be
looking for volunteers for Community Days in the spring. Contact Kathy if
you would like to help with sales next spring. Community Days has netted
PAWS over $33,500.00 since we became involved in the program in 2003.
September saw the crafters back at events selling their handmade items during the BBC&F at
the shelter on Sunday the 13th. October 3rd & 4th, the crafters were at the MacQueen’s Apple
Butter Stir, and then October 11th in Grand Rapids at the Apple Butter Festival. The Pemberville Harvest Festival took place on October 24th and the crafters were set up to benefit the
shelter. On Saturday November 14th the crafters traveled to Northwest State Community College in Archbold for their annual holiday craft fair. On November 28th, the Friends of the Wood County Dog Shelter will be
hosting a show at the Wood County Fair Grounds and our Krafting for Kitties will participate. On December 5th, the crafters will wrap up the season at Jackman Road Elementary School. Don’t miss these chances to support the shelter and
pick up some handmade gifts for the holidays. At this time, crafters are no longer in need of already made crafts and supplies. Generous donations from Paws and Whiskers supporters have provided the crafters with an adequate stock of these
items. Thanks to the people who have donated in the past; your contributions have been much appreciated. Anyone interested in helping can donate gift cards like Lowe’s, Home Depot, Michaels, Pat Catan’s (Formerly Craft 2000), and

Cool Cat Strut
Halloween decorations set the stage for Paws and Whiskers Cat Shelter’s 12th Annual Cool Cat Strut on Friday, October 16, at St. Clements
Hall. Over 150 guests enjoyed a chicken and meatball dinner from Malczewski's Catering, a beautiful cake designed by Mona Vogelbacher
of Curtice, slices of apple pie provided by Burger King, and a table full of snacks and other sweets. Guests were awarded 41 door prizes
Several hundred silent auction items -- ranging from original works of art, jewelry, Toledo Zoo and Symphony tickets, restaurant gift cards,
to bicycles and kitty condos -- were available for bids. Forty guests purchased chances to “dig for diamonds” in orange and black buckets of
kitty litter. 40 guests in clever costumes vied for prizes for the “Best Cat Costume” (won by Elliot Beam) and the “Best Overall Costume" (won by Stefanie Herzig and A’ndrea Sillery). Music for the evening was provided by Tony Blank. Support for this year’s Cool Cat
Strut came from sponsors shown below The event raised over $9,000.00 for PAWS, Toledo’s only all-feline, no-kill shelter.

And the Blame Falls on…cats???
I can’t some
eat it?
MYTHS OF TNR - For the last hundred years, cats have been blamed for reducing the number of birds,What?
even bringing
species
close to extinction. One study claimed that free-ranging cats killed between 7.8 and 21.9 million birds each year in rural Wisconsin. Another widely quoted study claimed that cats in the U.S. are responsible for 1.3 to 4.0 billion bird deaths each year. This is a horrifying
number, if true. The solution, some claim, lies in reducing the number of feral cats, often by inhumane methods such as poisoning, hunting, and/or introducing feline specific diseases into colonies of ferals. There is a better solution that isn’t inhumane and that doesn’t involve astronomical expense: trap, neuter, and
release—better known as TNR.
The opposition to TNR as a method to preserve wildlife is usually based on “scientific studies.” But there is a problem in what the media reports about these studies of cats and their
effect on wild bird populations. According to Peter J. Wolf of the Best Friends Animal Society, much of the data are misleading or factually incorrect because the science the reports
are based on is badly flawed or produced by groups that are openly opposed to TNR programs. Wolf claims, very strongly, that being a cat lover and “supporting TNR does NOT
put you at odds with wildlife conservation.”
The flawed studies, Wolf asserts, use a method of extrapolation that both inflates the numbers of outdoor cats and the number of successful hunters. The error comes from the multiplication of a study group or area, while ignoring surveys that say about 2/3 of pet cats are
indoor only. They also ignore that the total population of land birds in North America is about 4.7 billion. If cats killed up to 85% of our
birds each year as alleged, it would not take many years before there would be no birds left. These claims also ignore other studies that
say that habitat loss is the greatest cause for declines in bird populations.
As for the number of birds that are killed, other than studies from islands with ground nesting birds, few show that cats are successful at
catching birds very often. One study in Great Britain, where almost 90% of domestic cats have outdoor access, said that birds caught are
the less healthy ones—ones that would not likely have survived to the next breeding season. All predators go after what is most easily
caught. Another study in the U.S. put collar cameras on some feral cats on a Georgia island; it showed that only 5 birds were killed in over
2,000 hours of video recording. Mostly the cats caught amphibians and insects.
To show the extent of bias against cats in some studies, one looked at the “sub-lethal impact” of cats at bird nesting sites. It showed that
the “brief presence” of a cat could make birds abandon their nests or fledglings. Wolf does not doubt that the presence of cats could have
a sub-lethal impact on a nesting colony, but he is also aware of how “scientific findings” can be grossly exaggerated. He contacted the
lead researcher of the study and found that no live cat was used. The researchers used one taxidermy mount of a cat and a black and
white stuffed toy cat. Further, the study did not look at urban bird colonies that have grown used to the presence of humans and their pet
dogs and cats.
Keeping cat populations steady in an area doesn’t decrease the wildlife around us. If you
hear someone say that, “We have to get rid of these stray cats,” explain to them that TNR helps
“get rid of the stray cats” humanely. It keeps the cats from breeding and prevents other, unsterilized cats from moving into the territory. And if they tell you that the cats are killing all the songbirds, explain to them why they are wrong.
PS. If you’d like the names of the studies mentioned above, email ksimoni@aol.com. They were
left out of the article for the sake of brevity.

Safe Pets This Holiday Season
Holly, Jolly and Oh-So-Safe! Of course you want to include your furry companions in the festivities, pet parents, but as you celebrate this holiday season, try to keep your pet's eating and exercise habits as close to their normal routine as possible. And be sure to steer them clear of
the following unhealthy treats, toxic plants and dangerous decorations:
O Christmas Tree Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn't tip and fall, causing possible
injury to your pet. This will also prevent the tree water—which may contain fertilizers that can cause
stomach upset—from spilling. Stagnant tree water is a breeding ground for bacteria and your pet
could end up with nausea or diarrhea should he imbibe.
Tinsel-less Town
Kitties love this sparkly, light-catching "toy" that's easy to bat around and carry in their mouths. But a
nibble can lead to a swallow, which can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting, dehydration and possible surgery. It's best to brighten your boughs with something other than tinsel.
No Feasting for the Furries
By now you know not to feed your pets chocolate and anything sweetened with xylitol, but do you
know the lengths to which an enterprising fur kid will go to chomp on something yummy? Make sure
to
keep your pets away from the table and unattended plates of food, and be sure to secure the lids on
garbage cans.
Toy Joy
Looking to stuff your pet's stockings? Choose gifts that are safe.
• Dogs have been known to tear their toys apart and swallow the pieces, which can then become
lodged in the esophagus, stomach or intestines. Stick with chew toys that are basically indestructible, Kongs that can be stuffed with healthy foods or chew treats that are designed to be safely digestible.
• Long, stringy things are a feline's dream, but the most risky toys for cats involve ribbon, yarn and loose little parts that can get stuck in the
intestines, often necessitating surgery. Surprise kitty with a new ball that's too big to swallow, a stuffed catnip toy or the interactive cat dancer—and tons of play sessions together.
Forget the Mistletoe & Holly
Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems. And many varieties of lilies, can cause kidney failure in
cats if ingested. Opt for just-as-jolly artificial plants made from silk or plastic, or choose a pet-safe bouquet.
Leave the Leftovers
Fatty, spicy and no-no human foods, as well as bones, should not be fed to your furry friends. Pets can
join the festivities in other fun ways that won't lead to costly medical bills.
That Holiday Glow
Don't leave lighted candles unattended. Pets may burn themselves or cause a fire if they knock candles
over. Be sure to use appropriate candle holders, placed on a stable surface. And if you leave the room,
put the candle out!
Wired Up
Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments out of paws' reach. A wire can deliver a potentially
lethal electrical shock and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus, while
shards of breakable ornaments can damage your pet's mouth.
House Rules
If your animal-loving guests would like to give your pets a little extra attention and exercise while you're
busy tending to the party, ask them to feel free to start a nice play or petting session.
Put the Meds Away
Make sure all of your medications are locked behind secure doors, and be sure to tell your guests to keep their meds zipped up and packed
away, too.
Careful with Cocktails
If your celebration includes adult holiday beverages, be sure to place your unattended alcoholic drinks where pets cannot get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak, ill and may even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure.
A Room of Their Own
Give your pet his own quiet space to retreat to—complete with fresh water and a place to snuggle. Shy pups
and cats might want to hide out under a piece of furniture, in their carrying case or in a separate room away
from the hubbub.
New Year's Noise
As you count down to the new year, please keep in mind that strings of thrown confetti can get lodged in a
cat's intestines, if ingested, perhaps necessitating surgery. Noisy poppers can terrify pets and cause possible
damage to sensitive ears.
Forever Homes Needed
.Alyx (FEMALE)
1-2 Years DLH White/Black
I was taped up in a box and dumped in front of the PAWS door
one morning in April 2013. Luckily the employees were inside
cleaning so I didn’t have to sit in the parking lot very long. In
September 2014, after a year and half I finally got a home. Then I
was returned in March 2015 because my caregiver was going to
have a baby. I’m a skittish little girl but once you show me you’re
not going to hurt me and I trust you, then I start purring and enjoy
being petted. I need a home that is understanding and quiet at
first so I can adjust. It will
take me a little longer than
other cats but I will show you
that I do care and I’m a good
girl. I am a beautiful little girl
who will need a lot of
brushing and TLC. Do you
have the patience and time
for a scared girl like me?
MINDY
(Female) On February 24th, 2009 I was rescued
from a small box in a parking lot by a PAWS employee who found
me abandoned there. I am a beautiful Classic
Tabby who is looking for a good forever home
where I can run and play and not have to worry
about ending up in a box in another parking lot.
I love to play and I love water. When I am let
out of my cage, I love sitting in the sink trying
to get a drink out of the faucet. I would really
prefer to be an only cat. Do you have a soft
pillow where I can spend my days curled up
relaxing?
Babs (Female) My
siblings and I
were a very close family that traveled
everywhere together. We ended up in
the backyard of a lady who wanted to
help us get out of the cold. She opened
her shed and allowed us to stay there till
there was an opening at Paws. Finally
PAWS called and said it was our turn…
man, we were scared! I'm a shy girl, but
if you give me some time, I’m a good girl
who just wants someone to love! I've
been here over THREE YEARS
now….and while I love my PAWS friends, I'd love a home of my
own with people to love.
All of the cats pictured here owe their second chances
to you and your donations which allow PAWS the
luxury of being able to take care of them until a new
forever home is found.
Page 8
KYO (Male) Life started in a driveway
for me at a very young age. A nice family
heard my tiny cry for help, so they came
to the rescue. I needed to be bottle fed so
they brought me here to PAWS and I
went into a foster home. Life was great
and I loved my foster mom, even though I
was a bad boy. They decided to adopt me
and had me until now. I’m a very picky
kitty and only get along with certain people. I do not like other animals or small
kids. My mommy had to move in with her parents and I did not like
them. So I had to come back to this cage and try to adjust to a new family. Do you think you could have the patience for a picky guy like me?
CAME TO PAWS JUNE
OF 2011
SAMPSON (MALE) I was
rescued on Sampson St. in the
Detroit - Sylvania area. That is no
place for a cat that is used to
living inside. But that is what
happened to me when my caregiver was put into an extended
care facility and the family did not want to take care of me. I was put out
on the street where they expected me to take care of himself. I found a
porch and just sat at the door and cried. Finally the nice lady who lived
there was able to make arrangements here at PAWS to get me off the
street. Now all I need is for you to adopt me into a forever home with lots
of soft pillows for me to lay on.
FARRIA
(Male) 14 Years In April 2002, I was rescued from a
hoarding situation in Monroe County MI where there were forty cats.
The owners realized they were overwhelmed, and brought me and my
littermates to Paws and Whiskers. I was adopted right away and had a
home for ten years. Then one day
my caregiver decided he didn’t
have time for me and that, for reasons I don't understand, I'd be better off here in a cage than alone at
my home. I am a real sweet guy
that loves to be held, brushed, and
scratched. I am not much trouble,
really pretty quiet, (except for a purr
that sounds like a Harley) and
would love to have a new home I could call mine. Wouldn’t you like to
have a handsome guy like me curled up next to you? And you could
say you have the only American Curl on the block!

Snowflake (FEMALE) 5 Years
I was a cute sick little kitten when I
was found outside. A nice lady
came to my rescue and brought me
here to PAWS. I was treated for my
cold and put up for adoption and
went home right away. I had a
happy home for 4 years till my
family had to move out of state and
they didn’t take me with them so I
had to come back here to PAWS. I
was not a happy girl when I came
back and am still a little skittish but I
am doing much better and love my
treats. Don't you have the room in
your heart for a pretty sweet little
lady like me?
Amanda
(FEMALE) 2 Years
DSH Red Patch Tabby
I was a throw-away kitty that someone didn’t want anymore. I found
myself living in a warehouse where
a nice man started to care for me.
He would bring me food and treats
everyday till he was able to find a
good place for me to go. He brought
me here to PAWS in hopes of
someone to take me home and spoil
me. I'm a very good girl who just
needs a little time to adjust. Do you
have the love and time for a cutie
like me?
Tarragon
(MALE) 2 1/2 Years DSH Black
My siblings and I were caught
outside by a nice man who set us
up in his garage till PAWS had
room to take us in. We were very
feral, so it took a lot of love and
patience to get us were we are
now. I'm a very good kitty, but I
still need someone who understands I just need reassurance
that no one's going to hurt me.
I've been at the shelter since
June of 2014...I'd sure love my
own home! Could you help me
understand the world isn't such a
scary place?
Harvest (FEMALE) 2 Years
My siblings and I were born to a stray in the empty garage of an empty house. Happily, the house was purchased and so we were found!!!!
We were then brought to PAWS to find forever homes. I got a home
right away and was happy for 2 years….till one day everything in the
house was packed and I was shocked to be brought back to PAWS.
Turns out my family had to move and
couldn't take me with them. It wasn't
anything I did (I'm a real sweetie).
I'm a very good girl who is quite laid
back and loves attention. I'm so laid
back that, even though I'd never been
to a cat show, I warmed up to the process and became quite the show-off - I
even have the ribbons to prove it (and
a photo or two - check them
out)!!!!!! And look at my cool markings!!!
I look like a tortie (tortoiseshell) but I'm
technically a calico since I have what
they call "a locket of white." How different is that? Do you have the
space in your heart for a very loving little girl like me with the superspecial coat???
Billy (MALE) 2 1/2 Years
Can you believe such a handsome kitty
just being left in a carrier on someone’s
porch!!!!! Well, that's what happened to
me. And this porch had a big dog that
did not like me very much - thank goodness PAWS had room for me. I'm a very
good boy who just needs love and a
warm bed to snuggle in. Do you have
room on your pillow for me? Oh - and
don’t forget some yummy treats!!!
Lady (FEMALE) 3 Years DLH Grey
One day I found myself without a home,
wandering around outside all alone. It was
hard for me, particularly because I have no
front claws to protect myself with. I found
an opening under a nice man’s shed where
I hid from all the danger. He brought me to
PAWS so that they could help me find a
safe, loving home. I like people, but can get
a little over-stimulated from petting, so I
need someone to love me who understands when "enough is enough." I'm not
real interested in being friends with other
cats, and would prefer to be an "only cat."
Do you think you have the love and attention for a quiet beauty like
me?

Last month, we rather unexpectedly lost our nearly 19-year-old cat, Ally. A tiny little thing, she was always what my husband called "our
no problem kitty"...such a sweet, quiet girl (only grumbling if you made the unfortunate decision to pet along her back - than you got a
sharp kitty rebuke) that rarely "demanded" the attention a few of our other guys do. She always sat somewhere near, usually in "meatloaf
position"...often positioned right in the way of the television (basically her only fault, one I'd gladly deal with again). And she never stopped
exploring, finding her way into unreachable depths of the attic for at least one scary hot summer evening, the basement drop ceiling, and
leading us on more than one chase though the neighborhood after one of her many times outsmarting us by opening the sliding screen
door on her own.
Then amazingly, while putting together a memento box of Ally’s life with us, I
found her adoption papers from so many years ago. We’ve adopted and fostered
for many local animal organizations before settling happily with Paws and Whiskers,
so “who came from where” has kind of run together for me. Imagine my shock
when I realized Ally had actually come from Paws and Whiskers years ago! It was,
at the time, called Lend-A-Paw, which might have been why I hadn’t remembered…but what a delightful, emotional discovery.
I’ve known what a wonderful difference PAWS makes in my life as a volunteer and
in the lives of so many kitties….but I didn’t know it truly brought one of our greater
joys into our lives years ago. To know our relationship with PAWS actually began
over 18 years ago with the adoption of our teeny, tiny ball-of-fluff Ally…..what a
“full circle” moment! Kristi Polus (and Bruce Yunker)
Pet Disaster-Preparedness Kit
Make sure your family (including pets) is ready for disaster by putting together a disaster-preparedness
kit. The Humane Society of the United States
Visit humanesociety.org/disaster for our Disaster Preparation board on Pinterest for more resources on staying
safe during times of disaster. And remember—if it's not safe for you, it's not safe for your pets.
A basic disaster kit includes:
Food and water for at least five days for each pet, bowls and a manual can opener if you are packing canned pet food. People need at
least one gallon of water per person per day. While your pet may not need that much, keep an extra gallon on hand to use if your pet has
been exposed to chemicals or flood waters and needs to be rinsed.
Medications and medical records stored in a waterproof container and a first-aid kit. A pet first-aid book is also a good idea.
Cat litter box, litter, litter scoop and garbage bags to collect all your pets' waste.
Sturdy leashes, harnesses and carriers to transport pets safely and to ensure that your pets can't escape. Make sure that your cat or
dog is wearing a collar and identification that is up to date and visible at all times. Carriers should be large enough to allow your pet to
stand comfortably, turn around and lie down. (Your pet may have to stay in the carrier for hours at a time.)
Be sure to have a secure cage with no loose objects inside it to accommodate smaller pets—who may also
need blankets or towels for bedding and warmth as well as special items, depending on their species.
Current photos of you with your pets and descriptions of your pets to help others identify them in
case you and your pets become separated—and to prove that they are yours once you're reunited.
Written information about your pets' feeding schedules, medical conditions and behavior issues
along with the name and number of your veterinarian in case you have to board your pets or place
them in foster care.
Other useful items include: Newspapers, Paper towels, Plastic trash bags, Grooming items, Household
bleach.

BOWLING FOR KITTIES On August
27, 2015 from 6pm-9pm we had our
Bowling for Kitties fundraiser and we
had a wonderful night bowling and playing arcade games. The winner for the
highest bowling score won two tickets to
our Cool Cat Sturt Halloween Party and
we also had a Irish Cream/Coffee Basket for raffle. Not a whole lot of people
showed up but we made the best of it and had a great time :) The staff at
Bowlero Lanes on Monroe Street were very kind and helpful and the
house food was good also. We hope this can be a building block for an
annual event.
BBC&F - On September 13th PAWS supporters gathered
in the parking lot at the shelter for our annual parking lot
open house. Those attending browsed the Krafting for Kitties tent, looked over a great selection of used books and
were able to purchase homemade baked goods provided by
our supporters. In addition
there were silent auction
items, a 50/50 raffle and door
prizes. The event was again
very successful and took in
over $1,500.00 for the shelter.

IN MEMORY— IN HONOR— REMEMBERING
Occasionally, we need to make a gift in memory of someone or have to find a gift for that hard - to - buy for relative or friend. Might we suggest a gift “In
Memory Of” or “In Honor Of” to Paws and Whiskers. When you make a memorial gift to Paws and Whiskers in honor of a loved one, friend, or furry
companion, the gift is recognized in several ways: First, the gift is recognized in the next copy of the newsletter as listed above. Second a card is sent to
the family acknowledging you made a memorial contribution. Third you receive a handwritten thank you for your donation. Forth all memorial gifts are
placed on the Paws and Whiskers web site. This entry includes the name of the person or pet the gift is in honor of and the name of the person giving the
gift. Fifth if the memorial is in memory of a pet that has passed, the next cat arriving at the shelter (of the proper gender for the name) is named in honor
of your companion that has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. We hope the times when a memorial gift is needed are very few and far between, but
should the occasion arise, please consider a tax deductible donation to PAWS
