Fran Cole
Contributed by Casey L. Foedisch
Often, when you think of Riverton, images of tree-lined streets, Victorian
homes, and a river full of sail boats come to mind. Riverton appears a little
differently, though, to Fran Cole, a 91 year old resident. The image that he
sees looks more like a baseball diamond.
Fran Cole was born on October 5, 1920, and has lived in Riverton his
whole life. Most of his childhood was spent living with his grandparents on
the corner of 5th and Main, at what was then Cole’s Dairy. Occasionally,
when one of the men called out sick, Fran took their place delivering milk
at four in the morning. Once, while cutting through a yard in the dark, he
knocked himself over backwards when he ran directly into a clothesline.
But, he recalls with pride, he didn’t hit his head or break a single bottle.
Several years after his milk delivery days were over, Fran met his wife, Alice
Workman, through a mutual friend. They were married in 1944 during a
break in his service in World War II. They had two daughters, Donna and
Terry, who still live in the tri-borough area.
Fran attended Riverton School and went on to Palmyra High School,
where he graduated in 1939. It was there he began his love affair with
baseball, joining the high school team as a freshman shortstop and playing
through senior year. In addition to Palmyra’s team, he was a member of
the Riverton AA from age 16 to 26, which was a part of the Burlington
County League. They played teams in their own league, like Pemberton and
Roebling, as well as other visiting teams. The DC Black Yankees, the New
York Bay Parkways, and the Indianapolis Clowns also traveled to Riverton
to play against Fran’s team. The Clowns, Fran said, beat Riverton every time,
even though they played three long games a day to make their living!
Home games were played at the grandstand in Riverton Park, which
was built in 1933 as a part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA),
when Fran was still in Riverton School. Philadelphia teams loved to come
to Riverton’s baseball diamond because it was very well cared for and didn’t
have any rocks in the baselines. The Riverton Fire Company even came to
the field to water it down before games! The games were very popular, and
there was no price to watch. The only money collected was a passing of “the
hat” for donations to pay for equipment, the umpire, and the visiting team. Some of the spectators occasionally gave Fran and his teammates five dollars
to play.

World War II had a huge impact on Fran’s life, and he spent three years
on an army hospital ship. He worked on people whose injuries were so
serious that it still evokes emotion in him today. However, he also got to see
wonderful things. His ship took him to Africa, Sicily, France, Germany, and
England, and he visited places like Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii and the Rock
of Gibraltar. People from many different countries lived on the ship with Fran
because they were required to take in anyone that needed medical assistance.
In his three years of service, his ship had only one death. Despite the wonders
and horrors that he saw during the war, Fran maintained that the best thing
that happened to him was that he had the opportunity to use his skills to
help wounded soldiers.
This short article, though, is not enough to do justice to Fran Cole, an
extraordinary individual. There are no words to thank him for his service
or to retell his wealth of stories in the funny, interesting way he does. No
measure of pages will truly show his love for Riverton, the town where he was
born, went to school, played baseball, made his family, and still lives today.
