PLANNING
YOUR STAY
BOOKING & PACKING
Book early for flights, ferries and rooms
Make the most of your visit by planning well, particularly if you’re visiting during our
busy summer season. Here are a couple of helpful tips.
• Book transportation well in advance. Seats on Alaska Airlines and vehicle
spaces on Alaska Marine Highway vessels fill fast for peak visitor season,
May through September.
• Lock in your lodging early and talk to your host or reservation service about
where your lodging is situated in Ketchikan; your host has good advice about
options for local transportation.
It’s Alaska: pack for casual comfort in varying conditions
We’re not sticklers about fashion up here. So when you’re in Ketchikan, do
as Ketchikan folks do: match your clothes to your activities. And if we have
anything up here, it’s activities!
• Pack lightweight shirts you can layer under sweaters and jackets. Light wool
and polyester fleece are good choices for outer layers.
• Your comfortable pants are welcome anywhere and on warm days a pair of
shorts will feel just right. But be prepared for a maritime climate and a rain
forest setting; we recommend you bring a water-resistant coat with a hood
and sturdy, waterproof shoes.
• Lightweight gloves and rain gear may be needed for hikes and saltwater
excursions. Sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended for our long
summer days, especially if you’ll be on the water.
• If you’re prone to motion sickness, see a physician before your trip.
4
Before you visit, learn more about what makes our
community a place like no place else. In the award-winning
Ketchikan Story Project series of videos, personality features
and photographs, residents tell stories of our fishing,
aviation and timber industries; share our arts and Native
culture; and offer insights into local history. The project
won seven regional Emmys and three national Telly awards.

Ketchikan to the airport 15 minutes and 45 minutes after the hour. During
peak summer travel times, departures are every 15 minutes. The adult fare
is $6; one-way fare for a standard car is $7. Free baggage carts are available.
Cash and credit cards are accepted.
• Rental cars can be picked up from rental agencies at Ketchikan International
Airport or at the agencies’ offices in town.
Getting around on the ground in Ketchikan
Taxis meet arriving airport and state ferries. Rates are $3.50 a drop and $3 a mile.

Municipal bus service runs daily in the city; routes also reach south and north of
town. Service is hourly. Hours are reduced on Sundays.
• The fare is $1 for adults, $.50 for children and seniors. A day pass is $2.
• A free downtown shuttle runs every 20 minutes, May through September.
Public parking lots have time restrictions or require permits. One-day parking
permits are $5 at City Hall on Front Street.
Foot and car traffic is heavy in summer. Observe traffic rules, use crosswalks and
follow crossing guards’ directions. Don’t climb over or through ropes and rails.
Get there by air
Air taxis using floatplanes provide
scheduled commuter service; charter
service makes even remote locations
such as mountain lakes accessible.

ATTRACTIONS
History, scenic beauty and fun inspire diverse attractions.
Museums, historic sites and interactive tours are highlights.
Creek Street borders Ketchikan Creek, where salmon runs attracted Alaska Natives
for centuries and where residents and visitors still take fish. Brothels lined the creek
from 1903 to 1953. Shops, restaurants, museums and galleries now welcome
visitors to a one-of-a-kind neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places.
Southeast Alaska Discovery Center is an outstanding federal interpretive facility
spotlighting history and resources of Tongass National Forest, the nation’s largest.
Tongass Historical Museum and Dolly’s House profile our past. At Great Alaskan
Lumberjack Show, athletes show off skills used by those who work in the woods.
Totem Poles bring global fame to Ketchikan, where we boast the world’s largest
collection. Poles stand in numbers in Saxman Native Village south of town, and in
Totem Bight State Park and Potlatch Park out north. Poles also are placed in many
public areas throughout the community. Ancient poles are preserved at Totem
Heritage Center, another National Register site.

NATURE &
WILDLIFE
The prolific temperate rain forest is an astounding engine
for generating life, from tall trees to wild animals
We share our forested islands and the surrounding ocean with an amazing array
of wildlife. The temperate rain forest is not only one of the most beautiful places
on earth, it’s also one of the most biologically productive areas. Use the map in this
guide to scope trails that will put you right in the middle of our unique environment.
Make a plan, collect the appropriate clothing and gear, and get out there!
• More than 250 species of birds have
been identified around the Ketchikan
area. The Alaska Hummingbird Festival
in April celebrates the springtime
return of migratory birds.
• Migrating humpback whales and orcas
(a k a killer whales), sea lions, seals and
Dall porpoises are often spotted on
cruise excursions.
FYI
• Sitka black-tailed deer inhabit the
beaches and forest. Mountain goats
and wolves are sighted at higher
elevations.
20
Mountain goats, grazing in numbers in the high
country, are commonly observed by flightseeing
passengers. Snowfields melting in granite bowls
provide spectacular scenes. For longer, up-close
experiences of the sea and forest, outfitters
conduct multi-day stays and guided kayak tours.
• Black bears are commonly seen as they
fish in streams for returning salmon;
they also browse forested lands for
berries and other edible plants.

Ketchikan is the gateway to spectacular country
Misty Fjords National Monument’s deep canals and inlets were carved by glaciers

Misty Fjords provides outstanding recreational opportunities and wildlife habitat,
accessible by floatplane or boat from Ketchikan.
The near edge of the 2.3 million-acre area is only 40 miles south of Ketchikan.
Day cruises and flightseeing trips are offered daily in the summer. Kayak companies
and small charter boat operations offer guided overnight trips.
• U.S. Forest Service maintains wilderness cabins in the monument for visitors
who want extended visits.
• Pictographs—ancient Native rock art—are etched into cliff walls in the
monument. New Eddystone Rock, a picturesque volcanic core, thrusts from
an island near the monument entrance.

Sightseeing
adventure TOURS
Go ahead. Get out there.
We have so much ‘out there’ to get.
Ketchikan is a great destination for hands-on adventures. Local operators offer a
wide range of activities. Just bring your sense of adventure: guides and excursion
leaders will provide all the training and equipment you’ll need.
Human-powered sightseeing includes bike treks as well as guided
kayak and canoe excursions—even one with Native language
instruction. You can pedal a prop-driven, two-person catamaran
in sheltered waters.
A converted Bering Sea crab boat takes visitors to see the thrills
and skills of high-seas fishing. Another tour visits a remote inlet
for sightseeing and crabbing.
Sail through the rain forest’s tall conifers with Ketchikan’s unique
zipline adventures, or take a ropes challenge adventure for
another gravity-defying thrill.
Take off in a fast inflatable boat for a guided tour of our islands
and near-shore environment.
Venture out to a remote lake by floatplane, or to an island by
boat, and hike the rain forest. Or stay close to town and hike one
of the many nature trails that are just minutes away.
An amazing array of marine creatures can be seen up close when
you take a snorkeling excursion.
Be sure to check with tour operators as you plan for your visit.
Some excursions have requirements such as minimum height,
weight or age, or a driver’s license.

Sportfishing
Our saltwater fishing is some of the best in Alaska. Five species
of wild Pacific salmon return from the open ocean to their native
waters in this area: kings (also called chinooks), cohos (silvers),
sockeyes (reds), pinks (humpies) and chums (dogs).
In addition to the salmon runs, halibut and red snapper offer
great angling opportunities. Our cold, clean sea is rich with shrimp
and crabs. Pristine freshwater lakes and streams are alive with
trout, Dolly Varden and bright steelhead.
There are many options for fishing adventures. Full-service lodges
and resorts offer unforgettable outdoor adventure, great meals
and comfortable lodging. Experienced guides provide half-day
and full-day charters in a broad radius.
Do-it-yourself saltwater fishers can rent boats and gear from local
lodges. Floatplane pilots transport freshwater anglers to remote lakes, some with
cabins. Professional guides offer expert advice for your trip. Some fishing spots are
accessible from our road system; others are reached by floatplane or boat.
For more information about sportfishing, see Member Directory pages 48-49

SHOPPING
As a major port of call with a vibrant community of
artists and artisans, Ketchikan has shops and galleries
with real appeal for visitors who are interested in
genuine Alaska-made fare. Our businesses are also
well-stocked with distinctive gifts and mementos, from
apparel to smoked salmon.
Count on local stores for all you could need in sporting
goods, camping supplies, groceries, hardware, marine
and automobile supplies, personal items and books.
• Alaska Native art includes carvings and masks,
hand-painted drums, weaving, silver work, ivory
and jade.
• Galleries feature Alaskan and international
artistry, from paintings and prints to sculptures,
fine jewelry and collectibles.
• Smoked salmon and seafood as well as locally
roasted coffee are available.
• There is no state sales tax, although local tax
applies.
• Most shops offer shipping.
For more information about shopping, see Member Directory pages 46, 50-51.
34
Watch for these marks as you shop…
Want to be assured you’re buying an authentic Alaskan
treasure? Look for the official “Made in Alaska” symbol,
which indicates that the item was made in Alaska by a
resident artist, craftsperson or manufacturer.
The “Silver Hand” emblem signifies that the article was
handcrafted by an Alaska Native.

our neighboring
communities
First-time visitors and veterans alike come for the diversity that Ketchikan offers
and many stay longer for adventures in both accessible and remote areas. We’re
the portal to a number of inviting neighbor communities. Read on for highlights of
some unique neighbors and information to help you plan an extended stay.
Prince of Wales Island
West of Ketchikan lies the third-largest island in the United States. Prince of Wales
Island (often shortened to “P.O.W.”in local usage) is home to several thousand
residents in communities with populations that range from 50 to 1,500. The
island is a prime destination for sportfishing enthusiasts and provides outstanding
opportunities for camping, hunting and hiking—linked by hundreds of miles of road,
the longest system in Southeast Alaska. Totem poles and other Alaska Native artwork
are featured in several towns.

36
Scheduled floatplanes and ferries link Ketchikan to Prince of Wales Island,
where visitors can see historic, hard-working fishing and timbering towns. Recreational
opportunities run the length of America’s third-largest island.
Visitors and residents run 26 miles of shoreline on Memorial Day weekend in the Prince of
Wales Island International Marathon, a scenic, sanctioned race.
FYI
Southeast Alaska’s island communities are linked by three ferry
operations. Green vessels of the InterIsland Ferry Authority link Ketchikan to Hollis on Prince of Wales
Island. Rainforest Islands Ferry connects Coffman Cove on
P.O.W. to Wrangell and Petersburg, which are, like Ketchikan
and Metlakatla, ports of
the Alaska Marine Highway.
Visitors are invited to book tours in
El Capitan Cave, managed by the
U.S. Forest Service—largest of 500
caves on the island.
Hydaburg, Kasaan and Klawock
are home to many Alaska Natives
of Tlingit and Haida descent.
Remarkable totem pole parks stand
in Klawock, Hydaburg and Kasaan.
Inter-Island Ferry Authority (IFA)
provides daily passage between
Ketchikan and Hollis, on the east side
of P.O.W. Rainforest Islands Ferry links
Coffman Cove, on the northwest
side, to Wrangell and Petersburg
farther north in the Panhandle.
Local commuter air carriers connect
Ketchikan to Prince of Wales Island
with scheduled daily service.

HIGHWAY
Consider extending your visit to get acquainted with communities across our
region. Every community has distinctive features well worth sampling.
• Prince Rupert, British Columbia, is our closest Canadian neighbor.
Travel time is six hours on Alaska Marine Highway ferries or
45 minutes by air.
• Hyder, Alaska, is on the U.S. side of the international border with
Canada, opposite Stewart, B.C. Bear viewing and glaciers are highlights
of the area. Access is from B.C. Highway 37. Six hours by ferry to Prince
Rupert plus four hours by highway, or 55 minutes by air.
• Metlakatla Indian Community was founded in the 1880s by
Tsimshian Natives traveling by canoe from B.C. Congress created the
Annette Islands Reserve in 1891; it’s the only federally recognized Native
reservation in Alaska. One hour by ferry or 15 minutes by air.
• Wrangell is the gateway to the Stikine River and the Anan Creek Bear
Observatory. Petroglyph Beach offers a view of ancient Alaska Native
artistry in stone. Six hours by ferry or 45 minutes by air.
• Petersburg, Alaska’s “Little Norway,” was settled by Norwegian
fishermen. Traditional Scandinavian tole paintings grace many buildings.
The LeConte Glacier is a major visitor attraction. Ten hours by ferry or
55 minutes by air.
