Sweigart bowled his highest
series shooting 300, 280 &
268 for an 848. Harley began
bowling at 4 years old in New
Jersey. When he moved he
started bowling at Mira Mesa
Lanes in 2008. He bowled
his first 300 at the age of 13.
Since then, he’s bowled eight
300’s and has had three 800
+ series. He won his first JBT
the first time he entered and
now has 6 JBT titles with
many top 5 finishes. He came

TUSTIN – The last pin

family-owned bowling alley
gets ready to shut down after
38 years.
Tustin Lanes has been a
long-time favorite for leagues
and tournaments. Customers say that’s because the
Old Irvine Boulevard property hung onto affordable
prices and a neighborhood
feel, even as trendy bowling
centers with flashy technology and high-end cocktails
popped up around it.
“Tustin Lanes is like
home,” bowler Patty Wood
said. “It is just so sad.”
The closure is in keeping
with a national trend. There
are less than half as many
bowling centers nationwide
today as when league play
was at its peak in the late
1970s and early 80s, according to Tom Martino,
president of the Bowling
Proprietor’s Association of
America.
“Now you have to rely
more and more on casual
bowlers who come only
when they want to. That puts
the bowling center in a bad
situation,” Martino said, with
many businesses now worth
less than the real estate they
sit on.

lifelong friendships we’ve
made with some people.”
Tustin Lanes has been a
family affair not only for the
customers, but for the owners as well.
Jack Mann, who once
owned an orthodontist practice in town, broke ground on
the property at the height of
the bowling craze in March
1977. Mann had quite the
bowling empire, owning for
some time Fountain Bowl in
Fountain Valley, Regal Lanes
in Orange, Kona Lanes in
Costa Mesa and Chaparral
Lanes in San Dimas.
Competition got stiffer in
Tustin in 2008, when Strike
Orange County opened a
bowling center at The District. The center, which is
now Bowlmor, includes such
features as glow-in-the-dark
lanes and audio-visual technology.
In 2009, Mann bowed out
of the industry when he sold
Tustin Lanes to his youngest son, Alex Mann, who
also owns Arlington Lanes
in Riverside. Within months
of taking over, Alex Mann
made updates to electronic
scoring equipment, decor
and signage at the Tustin
property.
Along with its 42 bowling
lanes, Tustin Lanes offered
pool tables, flat-screen TVs
and projectors throughout,
an arcade, laser tag, two party rooms, a full bar, a snack
bar and a pro-shop. Alex
Mann told the Register when
game qualifying round on
Monday, Oct. 19, followed
by two six-game match play
rounds for the top 12 teams
on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The
top five teams after a combined 40 individual games
will advance to the ESPN
stepladder finals which will
be held on Saturday, Dec.
19, at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno as part
of the GEICO PBA World
Series of Bowling VII. The
finals will air Sunday, Jan.
17, at 1 p.m. ET and will be
counted as a 2016 title for
each member of the winning team.

some lanes and added other
forms of entertainment such
as bumper cars that generate
more revenue. Many have
also embraced high-end food
– a trend that’s hit shopping
malls, airports and other industries, too.
While Tustin Lanes isn’t
the most modern of bowling
centers, it remains friendly
and affordable.
As word began to spread
about the pending closure,
bowlers said, “It’s really a
shame. This will displace
over a dozen leagues, which
use the center Monday
through Sunday, affecting
hundreds of leaguers, other
families, church groups and
kids birthday party people.”
When the current season
ends, some bowlers will
move to Irvine Lanes or
Carter Bowl.
Proprietors see some glimmers of hope, with a push
to get bowling in the 2020
Olympics and attract more
young people.
With such nods to nostalgia, owners hope league
bowling might see the same
sort of revival that’s made vinyl and beards cool again.

Mason Sherman named to Ventura County USBC Hall of Fame

SIMI VALLEY – He’s
rolled 81 perfect games
and 45 800 series and
won two Professional
Bowlers Assn. regional titles.
He’s even
knocked down a few
7-10 splits, including
one earlier this year.
And he’s just 30 years
old.
That’s Mason Sherman, the newest member
of the Ventura County
United States Bowling
Congress Hall of Fame.
Sherman received his
honor last week at Harley’s Simi Bowl in Simi
Valley. Sherman joined
such luminaries in the
Ventura County Hall of
Fame as Robert Smith,
the powerful right-hander who has won seven
PBA Tour titles.
Sherman received his
Hall of Fame plaque in
a ceremony that was
a complete surprise to
him. “I think they wanted to sneak attack me,”
joked Sherman a day after being honored.
“I was so shocked and
I still am,” added Sherman, a Simi Valley resident. “The words on the
plaque and my name on
it just don’t make any
sense. It’s such a big
honor.”
Sherman, while being
modest, ranks among
the very top of elite
bowlers in the area. He
has consistently bowled
well over 200 in league
play, whether he competed at Harley’s Simi
Bowl, Del Rio Lanes in
Downey, Corbin Bowl
in Tarzana, Buena Lanes
in Ventura, Santa Clarita
Lanes or Mission Hills
Bowl.
He set a personal high
during the 2012-13 season when he averaged
a whopping 243 in a
scratch league at Harley’s Simi Bowl.
“That’s like my second home to me,” said
Sherman about Harley’s

been bowling there
since I was seven.”
Sherman has been described as a “cranker”
when it comes to his
bowling style and he
doesn’t disagree.
“I definitely have more
of a power game,” said
Sherman, a right-hander. “There’s not much
finesse to my game.”

that he “never leaves
anything in the bag
when he throws a shot.”
Kisro adds that Sherman is “100 percent
speed, torque and crank
on every shot, similar to
the golfer who always
swings hard off the
tee.”
The night he was inducted into the Hall of
Fame, Sherman let his
feelings be known in a
heartfelt post on his Facebook page. Interest-
ingly, he wrote his post
while he was compiling
a 700 series.
Here is what he
wrote:
“I am floored beyond
words right now. I had
no idea something like
this would happen tonight or ever for that
matter. Bowling is my
passion. I have loved
our game since I first
started at the ripe age of
7 years old.
“23 years later and I
have the same fire and
always aspire to better
myself and help promote the game where I
can.
From the loudmouth,
slappy, crazy, differentcolored-hair, ear-pierced
little butthead I was and
still kind of am sometimes . . . I have grown
as a person thanks to my
friends, my family and
most of all, my wife,
Andi
Garrison-Sherman. You make me the
best version of myself.
“You have helped
mold me into the man
and bowler I have become over the last several years. Your support
and love mean more to
me than words can explain. Have to thank
my father and grandparents for introducing
me to bowling. Had to
start somewhere and it
started with bumpers
and my dad teaching me
the game I have grown
to love. And a special
thank-you to all my
friends and the amazing
talents of our game that
have helped me along
the way, befriended me
and competed with me.

Three years ago, Sherman was the driving
force behind a bowling fund-raiser that was
held at Harley’s Simi
Bowl for the Leukemia
and Lymphona Society.
He came up with
the idea as a goodwill
gesture for his thengirlfriend, Andi, who
was involved in raising
funds for the Leukemia
and Lymphona Society.
One year later, the two
were married. They recently had their first son,
named Emmett, who is
now three months old.
Said Sherman: “My
family is most important to me. When I was
younger, it was always
about bowling first. My
dad was the one who
showed me the game.
He got me to a competitive level. I hope I
have exceeded even his
expectations. I can tell
you wholeheartedly that
it blows my mind I have
had the opportunity to
compete at a high level
and bowl next to some
of the best in the world.
Bowling has always
been humbling and the
greatest thing about it
is, you can never perfect it. You can always
learn something new in
our game. It is a reason
I love it.
“I have obtained much
more from bowling over
and above any of my
achievements though. I
have been given the gift
of lifelong friendships
because of bowling. I
will always thank the
game and be proud of
the game for that.
“As I have grown older,
my career has become a
focal point and bowling became secondary
as my passion. I met my
wife, we were married,
we rescued our dogs and
had our son; everything
I do now is for my family and I couldn’t be
more thankful. My wife,
my son, and my pups .
. . they motivate me to
no end. I want to be the
best for them whether
I’m at work, at home or
in a bowling alley doing
what I love . . . it is all
for them.”

“BOWL FOR THE
CURE” FUND-RAISING
PROJECT
Team Fish, the group of
young PBA members who
have banded together for
fun and friendship, is adding
“fund-raising” to its portfolio.
Led by North Carolina team
members Connor Pickford
of Charlotte and Kyle Troup
of Taylorsville, Team Fish is
unveiling a custom-designed
t-shirt that will be sold to
raise money in support of
the efforts to find a cure for
breast cancer.
Pickford, who lost his
mother Valerie to breast cancer in September 2001, and
Troup, whose grandmother
died from the disease in 2010
and whose mother is a breast
cancer survivor, are leading
the Team Fish effort to raise
money as part of the national October Breast Cancer
Awareness month campaign.
The special breast cancer tshirt can be ordered through
the Team Fish page on Facebook. Orders are now being
accepted. All proceeds from
the t-shirt sales will be donated to Susan G. Komen for
the Cure through the bowling

DEL KARPER Continues
His “HOT PACE”

- I don’t think Del Karper
has ever had a bad day on
the lanes. His average is
always in the 220 range
and he never seems to
vary off that score. How
does he do it? Simple:
TALENT.
Del Karper has a talent for scoring. Talent is
a word that can be defined
as an ability to perform
consistently and with
a high degree of skill.
That’s a great description
for Del’s bowling game:
skilled and consistent.
So what does skill and
consistency translate to on
the lanes? A 220 average
and first place in league
play. And that is just
what Del is up to. With
one session to go Del is
averaging 221 and leads
the SoCAL Men’s Club.
I believe he will keep up
his 221 pace and take this
seasons crown.
The Club is a singles
league and features a
match game format made
for Del’s consistent style.
Within a few weeks we
will know if Del continues his “HOT PACE” and
wins this seasons Club
title. Good luck Del. I
can’t wait to see what
happens.

Mr. Murphy said that
all the evidence reviewed
was public record and
was gracious enough to
supply the case number
for reference. Multiple
phone calls to the Central
District Court of CA and
the National Archives &
Records Administration
revealed that all records
involving “Glenn Allison
VS the ABC” had been
destroyed in 2011. The
statute of limitations may
have expired.
In
response to this news,
Mr. Murphy advised that
either Mr. Allison or his
attorney may have copies. Long story short; they
don’t.
Unfortunately, both
men asked that specifics of our conversations
remain “off the record,”
so let me be clear about
one thing; neither of these
men acted as though they
were trying to cover anything up. Quite to the contrary, both spoke highly
of Glenn Allison and did
their level best to provide
the information requested.
For them, it boils down to
this: Rules are rules, the
case was tried in court,
the denial of his award
was upheld, and that history can’t/shouldn’t be
changed.
To date, the USBC has
refused to yield to any and
all pressure to make that
change happen. For that,
they should be saluted,
not maligned, for sticking to their principles. If
you think these people
are stubborn, pig-headed
power-brokers, you would
be wrong. They are indeed
stubborn individuals, but
they are also intellectuals
who care deeply about our
sport and they are tasked
with preserving an unpopular legacy inherited from
the ABC.
The easiest thing for
them to do would be to
cave-in to the pressure applied whenever this subject
is broached by the media.
Men of true character don’t
“cave” easily (unless their
wives are involved). The
bad news is that, barring
some new evidence, the
present administrators of
the USBC are unlikely to
revisit this issue again.
Takeaway. The supporters of Glenn Allison,
myself included, want to
see official recognition, in
some form, of his title as
“Mr. 900”. The longer the
USBC delays that recognition, the more they risk
becoming irrelevant as the
legion of bowlers supporting this point of view grows
in number.
That is already beginning
to happen. Bowlers Journal
International, one of the
most highly regarded and
widely read bowling publications on the planet, put
Glenn Allison definitively
at the top of their list of
bowlers to achieve a 900
series (see March 27, 2010
issue). They justified doing
that by simply placing an
asterisk next to his name.
Certainly such a move
could/should be considered
by the USBC. If the decline of their relevance is
allowed to continue, more
people may choose to stop
bowling or remain sanctioned, and that would not
be healthy for this sport.
Over time, more people
will write about this subject
and bring more pressure
to bear on them. Waiting
for someone to prove anything regarding this matter
becomes less likely as time
passes. Evidence disappears
and eye witnesses pass. Is
this urban legend to remain
just that? I hope not.
Mr. Allison told me he
was recently contacted by
the ABC (American Broadcasting Company) about
their interest in covering
this story. Perhaps their
lofty resources and topflight investigative personnel can uncover something
that will bring the recognition he earned so long
ago. Stay tuned.

Correction: In last
week’s article this statement was incorrect: “If the
ABC wanted a valid second opinion, they should
have brought in an inspector from a nearby association and had it done ASAP.
Instead, they flew in a second inspector to perform
the re-examination the next
morning. Why they did this
is unknown, but it was irresponsible. The measurements taken by that official
were worthless, yet were
used to deny recognition of
a great milestone in bowling.”
At 3:30 PM EST on
September 28, 2015, I received a call from Mr. Ed-
ward “Bud” Pinchot. The
reason for his call was to
inform me that the ABC
was not irresponsible in
dealing with this affair.
Three other inspectors
had also been called in,
arriving within fifteen
to twenty minutes after
Bob Ramirez. He was
one of them. The others
were Terry Johnson and
Bob Strange. They each
inspected the lanes and
filled out separate forms.
It was Mr. Pinchot’s
recollection that all four
inspectors were within
“a board or two of each
other” in determining the
oil distribution that night.
The average of their findings was used to determine whether the lanes
passed or failed.
P.S. I apologize for any
inconveniences this may
have caused, but I am relying on both written and
verbal information. Other
errors may exist in the information presented, but
is not intentional. I stand
by last week’s statement
that any oil measurements
taken after two full shifts
of activity bowling are
useless, and that Glenn
Allison should be honored appropriately.
P.S.P.S. Mr. Pinchot
stated that he has always
thought Glenn Allison deserved to be recognized
for his achievement. After all, no matter what the
conditions were, he still
had to make the shots.
He even told me that the
ABC set up an ideal lane
condition, used a machine
to deliver the balls and
could NOT come close to
repeating what Glenn had
accomplished.

AT BOWLIG SQUARE
ARCADIA — After blowing out the lights at Keystone
Lanes on So-Cal Deaf Traveling League’s season opener day
with a 279 and 975, Darrell Stogryn’s ball was quiet in the traveling league’s action at Bowling Square. At the Square Stogryn
turned normal with games of 184-172-195-191, which landed
him on the league’s day honor roll with a 742 total.
Bob Jones actually did the reverse, by failing to make the
league’s honor roll by 5 pins with 695 consisting scores of 192
and 191 at Keystone. At Bowling Square Jones led the short
honor roll by blasting 195-213-223-238 for the lone 869 series
of the day.
Joining Jones and Stogryn on the Day’s roll list is the league
President Ed Abakumoff with his 757 from 176-190-200-191.
Two guys with 200 also made the list, Paul Taffolla Jr. with 223
ad Robert Audette with 201. Sharon Caldwell was the high lady
with her 183 and 622.
In the teams matches action Jones’ league leading S F Valley
made a near sweep 17-3 win over Abakumoff’s Riverside, increasing Valley’s lead to 8 points over Audette’s Mid City. Mid
City and Gorman Low’s Anaheim fought to a 10-10 draw. Taking advantage of Stogryn’s off day Taffolla’s Eagle Rock moved
up to 3rd place by winning 14-6 over Stogryn’s Chino Hills. S F
Valley also took over the season high team series with 2062.
This 56 years old traveling league thanked Bowling Square
management for hosting. Next travel trip will be on Sunday October 11 to Chaparral Bowl in San Dimas with bowling at Noon.
The matches there will be a thriller with Stogryn against Jones.

BURBANK — There are times I feel pity for those very
unusual people...non-bowlers. It may seem judgmental of
me, but they come over me whenever I revisit happy memories of my bowling career. Okay, it’s not really a career, I just
don’t know what else to call it.
I reflect on the places bowling has taken me I would not
necessarily have chosen to go and found, when I got there,
it was a pretty cool place to visit. I realize that when I attend
any bowling event, I engage in conversation with more than
10 people I’ve never seen before. I learn from these people
and not just about bowling. So many places and so many
new friends.
I often recall fondly, the huge grins and giggles coming
from young people who get their first strike or spare. Or how
nice I feel when I overhear them as they run to their parents
with pride and excitement, “Mom, mom! I just bowled 200!”
It’s birthday time to me because I know another dedicated
bowler is born.
This is how the feeling of pity takes over. So much is out
there for you, I say to myself. You don’t know what you’re
missing, I say to myself. If only you’d try once, I say to myself. Suddenly, reality crashes in on me and I say to myself,
“Shut up. You’re an addict, Silly. They won’t get it.”
