Amanwella is a contemporary beach resort on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Situated
close to the village of Tangalle, the resort is set within a mature coconut grove fronting
a crescent-shaped beach. Drawing its name from the Sanskrit-derived word for ‘peace’,
and wella, or ‘beach’ in Sinhalese, the resort offers 30 suites – each with a private
terrace and plunge pool.
A pebbled courtyard lies before the entrance to the resort’s
main facilities. These include the Restaurant and Lounge
Bar which are housed in open pavilions paying homage to
Sri Lanka’s renowned architect, Geoffrey Bawa. Set at the
eastern end of the property, they offer beautiful views of
the swimming pool, coconut grove, beach and sea, as well
as the suites which curve around the bay in a graceful arc.
A pathway leads guests through the
coconut grove to the suites which are set
along the hillside back from the beach.
Each suite features ocean or coconut
plantation views from the private terrace
on one side, and a plunge pool on the
other. Sliding doors open on both sides
to offer seamless indoor/outdoor living.
Suite interiors are contemporary, with sliding panels separating the main room from the spacious bathroom
and dressing area. Offering consummate privacy, plunge pools are accessed from the entrance to each suite.
Amanwella is a destination where wellness and nature go
hand in hand. Spa treatments including facials and massages
are offered in the Spa Suite, the privacy of guest suites or in
select garden locations, while yoga is offered in the coconut
grove beyond the Beach Club.
The 47-metre swimming pool is backed by
a large terrace, dotted with sun loungers.
Featuring a unique internal wall design, the
pool overlooks the bay and the crescentshaped beach. Views are particularly
spectacular at sunset.
The Restaurant offers
panoramic views of
the bay and serves
Mediterranean and
Asian cuisines. Fresh
fish is delivered daily
by local fishermen.
Open on all sides, the Lounge
Bar offers views over the ocean
as well as the resort’s elegantly
simple gardens. A range of drinks
and light snacks are served.
The Library lies between
the Restaurant and the
Lounge Bar, and is an
ideal venue for afternoon
tea. The Boutique offers
a selection of Sri Lankan
artefacts, jewellery,
textiles and antiques.
The Beach Club
is situated at the
western end of the
beach and offers a
picturesque dining
venue. It is also the
setting for romantic
beach barbecues
in the evenings.
Beyond the Beach
Club, a number of
sun loungers are set
on the pristine whitesand beach where
guests can enjoy time
out. Amanwella can
arrange surfing lessons,
scuba diving and boat
trips, whether for
fishing or dolphin
and whale spotting.
Amanwella offers a number of cultural
and nature excursions taking in some
of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sights. These
include fishermen on stilts, whales
basking in Mirissa Bay and serene
reclining Buddhas in the rock temples
at Mulgirigala, as well as safaris in Yala
and Udawalawe National Parks where
elephants and other wildlife can be
spotted. Closer to the resort are several
beaches where giant turtles lay their
eggs every year.
“The evening air is warm and gentle. An enormous sky meets an enormous sea. The stars blaze
in the sky and blaze in the sea… there is no sound in this melodrama of a tropical night except
a faint lapping of the sea, and now and then a shivery stir of palm leaves.”
