MARCH 2016 Highs and Lows! In last month’s column, I wrote about the success of our Annual Banquet and about our plans as we move ahead to celebrate our Chamber’s centennial year. Little did any of us know that in less than a week we would be announcing the tragic and untimely passing of our Chamber President. Over the past weeks, your Board of Directors and staff have relied upon the excellent organizational structure of our 4-star Accredited Chamber, and we immediately imJamie Akin plemented the Succession Plan that was already in place. Chairman of the Board Thankfully, our accreditation status fully prepared us to move forward in the face of this tragic situation. The Succession Plan called for two immediate actions: 1) the naming of an Acting President who will work directly with the Executive Committee and Board of Directors to maintain the operations of the Chamber during the interim period, and 2) the formation of a Search Committee to swiftly implement the nationwide search for a new President/CEO. Peggy Arnold, a 38-year employee with our Chamber, was appointed Acting President, a role in which she served once before while the Board went through its months-long search to fill the top position that ultimately resulted in the hiring of Phil Neighbors 10 years ago. Board Member Alvin New will serve as Chairman of a 6-member Search Committee, and this group will implement a national search that will ultimately name our next Chamber President. Your Board of Directors is keenly aware that Phil’s successor has huge shoes to fill, and we pledge to do our best to find the best candidate available. Meanwhile, have confidence that your Chamber is in good hands under the oversight of a very involved Board of Directors and a well-qualified and long-tenured staff. As we move into the Spring and early Summer, I ask for your support for the large projects that are scheduled to occur during that time period, and throughout the remainder of the year as we continue to celebrate our 100th anniversary. Here are the programs and projects scheduled in March: Our March 8th luncheon will feature Col. Michael Downs as he updates us on Goodfellow Air Force Base. The luncheon will take place at Bentwood Country Club from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, and is sponsored by West Texas Lighthouse for the Blind, Park University, San Angelo Homes REALTORS, and Stroman Abstract & Title Co. Call 6554136 ext 220 to make your reservation, register online at www.sanangelo.org or email Laura@sanangelo.org. Business Brown Bag will be held on Tuesday, March 15th from noon to 1:00 pm in the River View Room at the Visitor Center. This free lunch-hour training will feature Margaret Hoogstra, Executive Director of Texas Forts Trail, as she speaks on “Texas Friendly Customer Service.” Although a free event, your RSVP is needed to assure plenty of seating and materials. Call 655-4136. Join us for a free networking event when we gather at CTWP, 1821 Industrial Avenue, for Business @ Happy Hour. Stock up on your business cards and enjoy refreshments as we network from 5:00 – 6:30 pm on Tuesday, March 22nd. Consider opportunities in this newsletter to become a sponsor, volunteer or a vendor for the Chamber’s Goodfellow Appreciation Day on May 21st and/or the 10th annual Craig Partusch Memorial Showdown in San Angelo Drag Boat Races June 24-26. Help recognize business growth and expansion during 2015 by submitting a business expansion nomination form. Nominate your own business or another employer as we recognize business growth in San Angelo. Thank you all for your support, prayers and offers of assistance as we have moved, and continue to move, through this very difficult time for our Chamber. Please continue to pray for Phil’s wife, Susan, and his children and grandchildren.
