Some are completely volunteer, some are full service but most are like us, a little of both. It seemed like the clubs with the happiest members were the ones with the volunteers as they seemed to have a greater sense of pride in their club, a stronger connection to their club and with each other. To quote The Three Bears, “This one (CBYC) is just right.” I really felt that connection and pride on CBYC’s Opening Day. The threat of rain brought us even closer as we rallied together to pull it off indoors. The Flags, Directors, staff and Joy, Pam, Maggie, the L’s, all the volunteer servers, and crews to set up and break down were all so positive and energetic. I was so proud of our Opening Day but more proud of the member effort to pull it off. First of all, I would like to thank Jib for starting us off. I would also like to recognize James Dimon for his efforts to bring in local elected representatives; Senator Isadore Hall, Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell, and Councilman Joe Buscaino stole the show while they “Tie’d” one on. I would also like to acknowledge our own Amy Rodgers whose singing was angelic and brought many to tears with Amazing Grace and What a Wonderful World. My thanks to Lisa Williams for her Invocation, the U.S. Coast Guard Honor Detail, Izzy and Cameron for leading the Pledge of Allegiance, and to Kip Louttit for the official harbor report hand delivered by his son, Benjamin. On the food portion, thanks to all of those who brought appetizers to share while representing their docks and to Chef David and his crew who are now two for two with excellent Opening Day fare. Thanks again to all who helped! I love the longer days of Spring... great for cruising, racing, and enjoying the sunsets. M’Liz Callender Now I am off to the CBYC International Cruise to BVI. Too busy snorkeling to write a column. Wish you were here! M’Liz Mike Stavros May cruises start with the Avalon Cruise, May 13-15, and the Cherry Cove Cruise, May 20-22. The cruises show the two different lives of Catalina. Avalon has its restaurants, shops, and the night life of the tourist area, and then Cherry Cove has its tranquility and beauty. Make sure to sign up for these cruises ASAP. What a fantastic day we had on the committee boat for the Point Fermin Inverted Start. Eighteen boats challenged to see who would cross the finish line first. Congratulations to this year’s winner, Mick Shlens, and his crew on Blade. In addition to our Wet Wednesday races, we host four events in May. The Marina Cup, predicted log race, from CBYC to DRYC on May 6. The CBYC Championship Open in CFJ’s on May 14. The Eli Ruben Memorial Opti Regatta is May 21-22. May ends with the Around Catalina to Dana Point weekend. It will be a fun filled month for everyone. So join the action, and don’t forget the Wet Wednesday Burger Bashes and the Cook Your Owns on Friday, May 6 and Friday, May 27. Mike Fleet Captain Mike Richards The month of May has several cruises scheduled and with the summer sailing season nearly upon us, I would like to remind everyone of several things. First, if you haven’t reviewed the parking policy now would be a good time to do so. Just as a reminder, every car needs a current parking sticker in the windshield and the maximum parking time is five days. Second, when you leave for the island let Dean know so that he is aware of your absence. You can file a float plan, email him, or leave a note in his office mail box. The Summer Sailing Program begins in June. Sessions fill up fast, so if you wish your child or grandchild to attend decide early and reserve a spot early. Basic sailing and more advanced skills are taught and everyone has fun. All of our coaches are doing a great job and we really appreciate their efforts. Visit us online at cbyc.org | Copyright 2016 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA 5 The Lighthouse, May 2016 Board of Directors Minutes - April 5, 2016 Commodore Schopp called the meeting to order at 19:00 hours. The Secretary made roll call and a quorum was established. Also present were Bill Beck and Tara Webb. Fleet Captain Richards presented the Marina Management Report. He stated that the marina is full although several boats are up for sale. Dry storage is also full. Dean has purchased a new air compressor, which is currently located in the Junior container. The key for the container may be checked out from the office. Secretary Perrault stated that she emailed copies of the minutes from the March Board Meeting. It was moved and seconded that the minutes be approved as presented. Fleet Captain Richards presented the Juniors report, and stated that this next weekend they will be racing at SFYC in the Harken Series. High school sailors will be at Encinal YC. Team Trials for Opti’s is April 19-22 at SFYC, and the Opti SoCal will be at King Harbor on the 23-24. Rear Commodore Stavros said we had six boats for the Farr 40s and our PRO was Jonathan Mitsumori, and first place was awarded to Annapolis YC. CBYC has joined LAYC in a five series race with Chair, Dixon Hall. Coming races are One Design, Inverted Start, the 505 Regatta and The Thrilla at Cabrilla will be April 23-24. Stavros then stated that the Laser Pacific Coast Championships are scheduled for June 17-19. It was then moved and seconded that we move forward on accepting the option to host the PCC in June. It was noted that this could produce $1-2K for the club. Rear Commodore Stavros said the Anchoring Cruise had to be cancelled due to weather. The Spring Cruise went as planned. In April there is the Bareboat Cruise to the BVIs. Wet Wednesdays are underway with One Designs every Wednesday. The Point Fermin Inverted Start is April 10th and the PRO is Dixon Hall. It was then announced that S/C Holcomb accepted the position of Rear Commodore at ASPBYC. One of his main duties will be the maintenance of the marks. Scott said he and Director Steve Gierke checked out all the marks and have ordered some new marks. The Walt Elliott race will be here soon, and we anticipate 6-7 boats, with a 10:30 a.m. skipper’s meeting, and our PRO is Jonathan Mitsumori. Director McCloskey stated he wished to add Rod Palmer to our honorary member list. He has been recommended for same by S/C Jib Kelly, and he is 92 years old living in Temecula. In addition, it was suggested that we also honor Nadine Collins and Hank Brightly, for similar reasons. Director 6 Visit us online at cbyc.org | Copyright 2016 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA The Lighthouse, May 2016 McCloskey also stated we have three MIPs that have met all the requirements for membership and are hereby recommended for membership. Accordingly, it was moved that Manolis Dimotakis (A), Brian and Sheri Vassallo (RF), and Michael and Sharon Roach (RF) should be approved for membership. Treasurer Feves stated that the financial statements should have nothing out of the ordinary. The bar income is a little slow, but then this time of year is usually much slower than our summer months. Basically, we are ahead of budget which is great, but it may be related to a time phase issue. J/S Commodore Burch said he did not have a formal report, but the April General Meeting will highlight Fleet Surgeon, Dr. Jack White, and the functions and uses of our defibrillator. We will also be having a heart healthy meal that evening to promote good health. Vice Commodore M’Liz Callender said that Mark Fogle has been spending many hours on necessary repairs to the club. The Club Clean-Up Day is April 2, and we need volunteers. The banister repairs will be completed, and the five damaged doors have been replaced. She also reported that the decision had been made to have a sensor upgrade installed on our elevator. Changes in the California Labor Law Codes have caused us to change some of our procedures in the bar and our bartenders are required to take lunch and breaks. This is the law, so please be tolerant when our bartenders need to leave the bar area for a few minutes for their required breaks. Every effort will be made to get a replacement to that area as soon as possible, but please be patient. Please note, on Wednesdays and Thursdays the bar is open until 10:00 p.m. and the last call is at 9:30 p.m. Please be respectful of these times. Upcoming events are Opening Day on April 9th, with a 30% chance of rain. Looking ahead, the Lobster Feast has been CANCELLED. It was discussed that we allow Magic Club to meet on Monday nights, and it was so moved and seconded. Motion passed unanimously. Commodore Schopp stated that the various Opening Days have been well represented by the Flags. The combined events with Los Angeles Yacht Club have been successful and we hope it continues. He has received several thank you notes from Honorary Members, and Jennifer Williams of the Coast Guard was very helpful in getting the Coast Guard Color Guard for Opening Day. He thanked all flags, directors, committee chairs and all the volunteers for such a smooth beginning of the year. Under New Business, Director McCloskey said that he is working on activities for Fleet Week. The format is different this year, but he is on top of it, and there was talk of us hosting a Chief ’s Night. Rear Commodore Stavros asked if it was possible to add pictures to the roster. There being no further business before the regular board meeting the meeting was adjourned at 20:45 hours, and went into executive session. Respectfully submitted by Secretary, Perrault. We only had one, but, it was big one. The British Virgin Islands Bare-boat Charter Cruise. See the separate article in this issue, providing I was able to write it while on the cruise. If I’m having too much fun, you will have to wait until the June Cruisers’ Corner. What cruises have we got coming up in May. Well… a couple of great ones… The first is the Avalon Cruise, hosted by Jeff and Kathy Embree. They have really outdone themselves on this one. For those of you that like going to spas, Kathy has arranged a 10% discount for us cruisers. Dinner has been arranged at Steve’s Steakhouse for Saturday night and breakfast the next morning at the Pancake Cottage. This is one cruise that you don’t want to miss! The following weekend is the Cherry Cove Cruise hosted by some of our Associate Members. Please join some of our newest and young members. It should be a great time. Now, here is where I try to come up with some random topic to fill in space that may or may not be of interest to cruisers; so, how about the topic of Boat Names? I’ve had a little experience with this. Three boats, 3 names, all previously owned. If the boat is brand new, a situation that provides itself only to those of us that are given a boat (infrequent) or the rich who can afford to buy and outfit a boat from scratch. A new boat is very much like a new house, one gets to spend as much money outfitting (decorating) it as the boat costs. But, I wander… back to boat names. For most of us buying previously owned boats, the new owner is presented with choices. One can either keep the name, change the name, or don’t name it at all. I actually know of someone that refused to name his boat at all. Keeping the existing name can present a whole set of issues. Most people personalize their boat names such that it would make no sense at all for the new owners to keep it. My Catalina 30 came to us as Rubarb, for Russell and Barbara. This didn’t work well for Jim and Claudia and besides, we didn’t want to sail around as a vegetable anyway. Our Catalina 22 was Sadhana, which means “going towards spiritual enlightenment”. This in itself was not too bad, but people kept asking us who Sad Hana was. Therefore, new names were required in both of the preceding cases. This brings us to our present boat Crimson and Clover, definitely personalized for the original owners, and without much meaning for the current owners. But, it’s really not a bad name. Keep or change? It really only gets awkward when using the radio such as… “Morning Star, Morning Star, this is Crimson and Clover, over” … and over. Do you remember the song? So, it is still a name that is not so personalized that it can’t be used, and, plus, our asymmetrical spinnaker is bright red with clovers on it, I guess the name is staying. So… how did you arrive with the name of your boat, or boats over time? I would like to hear so that I can publish your stories. Send them to jasrclark@att.net I hope to see you all on our upcoming cruises. Be safe and have fun! As alleged Fleet Captain of Fleet 24, I have the great honor (or dubious distinction - depending on your perspective) of announcing the Fleet’s First Report. Fleetsters were concerned that the appearance of such a report would be the death knell for the Lighthouse. I, however, argued that Lighthouse readers were, in the main, a hardy bunch who would not be daunted by silliness, bad puns and overuse of parenthetical expressions (or stuff that was irrelevant...or was it irreverent?...). We are a group of like-minded (sorry to those whose mind is NOT like mine) sailors who enjoy both land and water cruises. Upcoming are: 2016 Cruise Calendar May 28 - CBYC to Dana Point Memorial Day Race/Cruise June 10-12 - Isthmus Theme Cruise - Koehler/Elpers/Miller * July 8-10 - Catalina Rendezvous - Frank Butler July 15-17 - Emerald Bay Cruise - Miller/McMullen/Golden/Koehler/Gelineau * September 9-11 - Family Cruise - CBYC October 8 - Five-Hour Tall Ship Cruise - Miller November (TBD) - Fleet Election/Planning Potluck Party - Carson and (?) December 10 - Land Cruise - Carson/Powell * Joint Fleet 24/CBYC Cruise In the planning stages, is a Fleet 24 Rendezvous at CBYC for Fleetsters, CBYC members and those with a Catalina docked in the Harbor. Look for more information in the next Lighthouse. 10 Visit us online at cbyc.org | Copyright 2016 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA The Lighthouse, May 2016 The maraschino cherry on the sundae of this report are excerpts from the Fleet newsletter - The Flamingo Flyer - which itself is more than enough reason to run out IMMEDIATELY and buy a Catalina and join Fleet 24 (not to mention CBYC if One has been remiss in that respect). THE FLAMINGO FLYER Catalina Fleet 24 - L.A. Harbor NOTICE: Due to the fire at our fleet offices, this newsletter was assembled by volunteers. We realize the writing is uneven, the topics are irrelevant and the information is all wrong, but regular Flyer readers shouldn’t notice any difference. Spring Maintenance Reminder It’s springtime, boat maintenance season - as are summer, fall, and winter when your boat is as old as mine - and time for a reminder to those who do their own oil changes: Be sure to dispose of used motor oil properly. Do NOT dump it into a public drinking fountain or the Public Library after-hours book return chute. Instead, pour it into an approved container and mail it to any TV station that airs Keeping Up with the Kardashians. The View from the Bilge - 2015 Year in Review (Jan-March) Once again it is time to compare a year that was pleasurably misspent participating in Fleet 24 activities to the same year as it was experienced by non-boaters, that is to say, normal people. So let’s take one last glance back at year 2015, which began, as so many do, with: January, which found the fleet land-cruising to the Huntington Library, Art Gallery, and Gardens while in the nation’s Midwest, unusually frigid weather raised fears that the sub-zero temperatures could threaten the very survival of the vast herds of presidential candidates roaming Iowa. February was when we hosted the CBYC Cook Your Own/Installation Dinner, but water was the big story in drought-stricken California, where the state legislature passed a new water conservation bill requiring all California residents to shower in some other state. March was when the fleet got to experience the unique Nethercutt Car Museum in Sylmar. Meanwhile, the FDA surreptitiously approved the sale of genetically modified fruit and vegetables while assuring a doubting public that these new types of produce offer many nutritional benefits and are “completely safe to eat as long as consumers are careful not to anger them.” Flamingo Flyer written by those in Witness Protection Report written by Gayle Carson - Custodian, M/V AttaGirl! Photo by Steve Jost Visit us online at cbyc.org | Copyright 2016 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA 11 The Lighthouse, May 2016 BritishBritish Virgin Islands Virgin Islands CruiseCruise Part 1 Arrival” Part 1 - “The "The Arrival" Preface: Getting to the BVIs is not easy. One has to leave early in the morning or take nearly a whole day to get there. About half of us elected to leave at Our cruising grounds! midnight, with connections on the east coast (5hrs), proceed to the American Virgin Islands (4hrs), a ferry wait (2hrs), ferry to the BVI (1hr), clear customs (45min), then, finally, taxi to the charter base. A total of 18 hours with layovers! The other half of the group left mid-day, omitting the ferry, but took 20 hours to arrive! So, one had to really want to go on this cruise in order to put up with inconvenience, and guess what, 20 of CBYC's members really wanted to have the Caribbean Bareboat Charter experience. In the end, was it worth it, without doubt, everyone said yes! Island Time! This is the first in a series of articles outlining our experiences because one article would take too much space to sufficiently convey the immensity of the experience. So, here we go... The Arrival: Most of us arrived the day before we had access to the boats. This gave us time to acclimate to what locals call "Island Time". Island Time is basically... “No worries, no hurry”. Some of us needed to top off provisions. So as the day went on (Island Time), we eventually made the short walk to the Rite Way market. Enter the store and we might as well have been in the USA with all the same brands as at home. We shopped as a committee taking twice as much time as normal... but we are on "Island Time". We arranged for a 7 p.m. next day delivery and then back to the Mooring Base for a rum punch or "Painkiller", discussion about where we would go cruising, and then dinner. While sitting enjoying drinks, my phone rang, interrupting our Island Time. The display said Mike Stavros. Huh? Has someone's boat sunk? Is the club on fire? No... Forgetting that our group was off to the BVIs, he was calling about the upcoming Cherry Cove Cruise. After everyone shouted "hi" to him and me assuring him all was good, we were back to Island Time. Too funny. That evening after dinner we couldn't help it but had to go down to the boats and find some that were our size. We wondered which one would be ours. We surveyed how the running rigging was set up, and which would be our preferred boat. None of our efforts would matter but it was fun none the less. Waiting to actually get aboard was killing us. to be continued in "The Boats" To be continued in “The Boats” 12 Visit us online at cbyc.org | Copyright 2016 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA The Lighthouse, May 2016 Visit us online at cbyc.org | Copyright 2016 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA 13 The Lighthouse, May 2016 Racing at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club Marina Cup CBYC-DRYC May 6-7 - Marla Brown MATCH RACE UPDATES FROM CBYC HEAD COACH, STEVE NATVIG Griffith Series #3 (Inverted Start) May 7 - LAYC Thank you Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club for helping to get our team CBYC Club Championship Open: FJ TBD - Tom Eskridge/Rear Commodore this season for Eli Reuben Memorial (Opti) Regatta: Harken #3 May 21-22 - Aaron Feves Around Catalina to Dana Pt. Long Beach Yacht Club was the challenger of record on their Catalina 37’s, joined by Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, Navy Yacht Club, Shoreline Yacht Club, and Seal Beach Yacht Club. Our defending crew was made up of Brian Dair, Kenny Dair, Greg Clark, Geri Lampert, Richard Welsh, Aaron Hall, Nick McCabe, and me. We raced in the lower part of the middle breakwater with winds in the 14 knot range out of the west. Jonathon Mitsumori and Diana Price were on the committee boat and Dixon Hall and Tim Noyes on mark set. First start went off on time at 1300 and we came in on starboard at the boat end but a little late. Although we were able to control the fleet for a short time, LBYC and ABYC got off well and were soon in the lead with SBYC in third and we were following in fourth where we ended up. ABYC took that race followed by LBYC, SBYC then CBYC. In the second race, ABYC and LBYC may have written us off. They followed each other to the right and left us alone long enough to let us sneak by for a healthy lead and a victory for CBYC followed by LBYC, SBYC, and ABYC. The standings at that point were LBYC at 4, ABYC and CBYC at 5, and SBYC at 6. The final race found us in fourth just after the start but we had three laps to go. After the second lap we moved to third with ABYC and LBYC battling it out on the left side of the course. Brian Dair saw a right shift coming and had us go right and sure enough a 20 degree right shift came through just in time and put us far enough ahead for a comfortable finish at first followed by LBYC, ABYC, SBYC, SYC, and then NYC. In the end we were tied with LBYC at 6 points but beat them on the tie breaker with our two firsts for a fun come from behind victory and one more year with the Walt Elliott Cannon that you see in the stairway trophy case. Thank you to CBYC, our race committee team and my fellow CBYC sailors for giving us this opportunity to race. It is always great to be surrounded by the Dairs when you’re on the same boat. It’s not the same when they have you surrounded on different boats but that what makes us better sailors. Bill View from the Dock & Yard April 2016 This is the time of year when things start to go crazy. The toys are coming out of the garage, the fishing gear is yelling at you to be used, tenders and kayaks head down to your boats. It is also the time when they all grow feet and walk away. Please help your neighbors by keeping the gates closed both on the dock and in the yard. Motors have been disappearing lately and we need your help in keeping things secure. It is smart to close the main gate when you are working on your boat in the yard. The yard is long enough that you can’t see from one end to the other. As you bring down your toys, please make sure to keep the dock clear of hazards and such. No gas cans on the docks, please. I’m told we have a few slips open. We appreciate your help in filling them with your friends and potential members. Summer sailing is about to start as well, so get your kids and grandkids signed up early. Don Zinn tells me you are our best sales force! We have a large regatta coming our way this summer – the C420 North Americans the week of August 17th. We look forward to your continued volunteerism and support. Kind regards, Acting Chair, Marina Management Committee S/C John O’Connor Visit us online at cbyc.org | Copyright 2016 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA 15 The Lighthouse, May 2016 Puerto Vallarta and Return - A Sailing Adventure (Part 1 of 2) By Gordon Leon Like most great adventures, there were great parts, scary parts, and boring parts. Foil (my Farr 40) left Cabrillo with her trusty crew, Jennifer Pszybylski on February 16th. We motored 12 hours down to San Diego Yacht Club for the start of the 2016 PV Race. The next morning, the winds blew 10-15 knots at the start and never let up till we reached Cabo. Foil and her crew of six made it to Cabo in three days with speeds up to 22.6 knots. Most of the crew had sailed long distance races, so we were able to get right into a watch schedule. All of the crew had the chance to crash Foil at least once during our downwind dash. I caught a wave poorly while sailing too deep and did a Chinese jibe. Dan Rosen caught the back of my foulies and hauled me back on board as I had a death grip on the wheel. Luckily, we didn’t do any damage. The second leg of the race was the light air across the Sea of Cortez. We down shifted and put up my new masthead code zero. It was definitely the right sail until the breeze came up. We had long discussions (arguments) about the top end of the sail and mast. We finally decided to bring it down with just over 12 knots of breeze. We didn’t break the mast (my worry), but the halyard jammed and we had to lower the main and send Dan up the main halyard to spike the code zero. It turned out that our weak link was the spinnaker sheave. I lashed a Farrell and tag line to use in case of spin halyard failure. That worked for awhile, but it was not strong enough and we lost the back-up halyard (Lesson Learned - back-up systems need to be stronger, better, and more reliable than the primary system). Dan went up the mast again and re-lashed the Farrell so that we could raise a spinnaker. It was difficult to get back into race mode after a couple of boat problems. The finish of the PV race after 5 days and 17 hours was especially nice. We finished within an hour of several other boats after 1000 nm motor into Puerto Vallarta Marina. This is the first time that I have sailed into a foreign country and it is an experience that I highly recommend. The next part of our adventure was the Mexorc Regatta. Joe and Laura Neal brought all of our buoy racing gear to PV in a 30’ trailer. We enjoyed PV for several days while we changed Foil from an ocean racer to a buoy racer. The biggest change was taking off the 7’ diameter wheel and installing our tiller. Five additional crew flew down to PV in time for a practice sail before the regatta. Mexorc is a six day regatta with one lay day. The host really knows how to throw a great opening party. Each of the crews were cheered by 30 Mexican children, men, and women in traditional dress as we entered the dining area. The opening ceremonies, with many Mexican dignitaries, also included the PV race trophies where Foil received 3rd place. Banderas Bay is a spectacular sailing venue. The bay is 17 nm wide and 20 nm long and over 1000’ deep. The wind machine starts at about 10 a.m. and blows 25 kts every afternoon at the top of the bay. There is a 100 degree wind shift from the start area to the windward mark, making lay lines very difficult. Let me say that handicapping different types of boats is very difficult, if not impossible. Jim Teeters did his best to handicap each of the races based on the courses and the predicted wind speeds. But, the handicaps can’t correct for differences in planning performance. We had great starts for all of the races, thanks to Sam Heck. We were out sailed by two of the three Mexican Farr 40s from Acapulco (local knowledge?). We had a great start on last race and led the other boats around the course to a 1st place finish. It was a great way to end the regatta, even though we weren’t on the podium. 16 Visit us online at cbyc.org | Copyright 2016 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA The Lighthouse, May 2016 Membership Cards and Rosters are ready for pick up! What a great Opening Day! We did not let a little rain bother us, Opening Day was a huge indoor affair, with over 250 people in attendance! A big thank you to all involved, including: Joy Jacot, Pam Meisel, Maggie Raski, Mark Fogle, Gary Major, all the Flags and Board of Directors, and everyone who Dressed Ship and/or came to the event. At our April Meeting, Pam Meisel was the guest Chairman, because the Vice Commodore was too involved in Opening Day planning. Thank you, Pam. The “big new idea” from the meeting was to change the Father’s Day Brunch to a Father’s Day Supper, so fathers can sail or golf or lie in bed Sunday morning. I believe we are even going to show vintage sailing movies on Father’s Day. There was a lot of talk about bar parties, a May 7th Kentucky Derby day-time event and perhaps a Games and Grub. We played a little Bingo to end the short one-hour meeting. Come to our next meeting. We meet once a month, for only one hour, to plan upcoming events and brainstorm new ideas. In May, the Social Committee will meet the first Thursday of the month, (May 5th), at 6 p.m. At our next meeting we are going to talk about 4th of July Big Weekend Bash, so come with your ideas. We are still looking for that special person to chair the Social Committee. By the time you read this, Opening Day will be a great memory, so now is the time to lead the committee.
