Final Fantasy XIV is a very difficult game to navigate, especially as a new player. I have put together a list of the in-game basics that will help you get around Eorzea and significantly ease the process of learning how to play Final Fantasy XIV. Level Recommendation Almost all of these leves in the Leve list and leveling spots were completed by an under-geared Pugilist (hard to find armor when you are one of the highest level players on the server). All level recommendations refer to class level, not physical level. Prior to level class level 10, casters may find themselves struggling to complete the level 10 Leves (even if I was able to solo them). Please keep this in mind when looking through the Leve guide. You should have no problem keeping up with the suggested difficulty once reaching level 10. This goes for all classes as well; strengths are varied from levels 1-10, but level off pretty quickly once you get past that. If you are unsure, do not be afraid to ask for a group. Once you get to level 8, killing monsters rather than completing leves should form the bulk of your experience points. Leves supply you with the gil, faction, and guild marks needed to progress your character - so find a group if you think you might fail. On the other hand, if your gear is excellent and you know how to play your class, you may be able to solo the quests earlier than I could. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. The experience points, damage done, and damage taken modifiers all use class level as the basis for the bulk of their formula, not physical level. For example, if you are a level 1 Archer and Physical level 50, and engage a level 20 monster, you will have no chance to win. However, if you are a level 20 Archer and have a Physical level of 20, you will win just fine. What if your Physical Level is far beyond your Class Level? Some players have e-mailed asking about class changes or earning a very high Physical Level from crafting. How does this effect the guide? You can think of every 5 Physical Levels as being worth 1 Class Level. In other words, if you are a Physical Level 25 and are playing a level 5 character, you should be able to handle mobs 4 levels beyond your level (25 physical - 5 class = your physical being 20 levels higher than your class; divided by 5 = 4 more levels). You do not have to move up to higher levels though based on this formula - it just means the higher level camps are an option. That way, if you are level 30 and want to take up a new discipline of war or magic, you could level up in any area up to 6 levels above what is recommended in the guide. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. Players are free to do whatever they like within the confines of the world - participate in quests, level up, meet other players, buy, craft, and sell items, interact with computer-based characters, hunt elusive monsters, and more. However, there are two primary aspects of the game that all players strive for: progressing their character and completing quests. Character progression can involve leveling up, getting better items, mixing in new classes, and making new items. Progression allows your character to kill tougher monsters, complete new quests, and access more exciting game areas. Questing is the actual "objective" of the game. This involves completing objectives such as slaying monsters as tasked to you by a computer-controlled character. Quests advance the storyline and offer rewards. Whether your goal is questing or progression, you will need to level up in game to complete both objectives. The higher your level, the more challenging quests you can accept, and the more your character will progress. In keeping with the traditional spirit of Final Fantasy games, some "grinding" or repetitive killing of monsters is required. Unfortunately, since everyone is trying to level up as well, it can be tough to find the appropriate monsters to fight and level up efficiently. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. Fighting other players for spawns is not fun, so we have gone through all of the zones and selected the prime leveling spots, which are now available to you! Important Please note that Final Fantasy 14 is indeed created and produced in Japan. Most of you know this, but as a result, this game will not play like a typical "Western" RPG. FFXIV is not a World of Warcraft clone and has a different feel than games created in Europe and North America. There are two major differences: 1. The User Interface is not the same as typical Western games and can take some time getting used to. 2. The game is not very transparent. Maps are less clearly marked, combat formulas, experience point formulas, and crafting formulas are hidden. It takes some guess work and intuition to figure it out Due to the "learning curve" and difficulty some players may have when first navigating the Eorzea, we have put together an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) in the section below. If you are new to Final Fantasy XIV, are having difficulty moving around, or how a question that starts with a "How do I…", then I strongly recommend reading through Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. How do I move and control the camera? This is the most common complaint about Final Fantasy 14. You can move your character with the traditional WASD set-up (W is forward, A is to the left, etc). The unusual portion is that the arrows do not control the camera. To move the camera, you can move the mouse while holding down the right click, but it seems to be slow (the game treats the mouse as software rather than hardware). The only fast way to move the camera is to use the "IJKL" keys, where J and L spins the camera left and right, respectively. The easiest way I have found to navigate the world is by using auto-run. Start running forward (by holding the "W" key) and then hit the "R" key. This will make your character constantly run until you tell him to stop. The camera will then automatically follow; you just have to "steer" him or her with the "A" and "D" keys. You can stop auto-run by hitting "R" again or moving backwards ("S" key). 2. Help! I accidentally went into first-person mode (camera zoomed in completely) and can't get out! Hit the "V" key to move back into third-person mode. 3. My character is walking really slowly; what do I do? Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 8 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Sounds like you accidentally turned on walking mode. Hit the "X" key to toggle between walking and running modes. 4. How do I talk to my friends privately? You can talk your friends privately by typing /tell firstnamelastname message. In other words if you wanted to send a private message saying "How are you?" to your friend's character named "John Smith", you would type the following into the chatbox: /tell John Smith Hello, how are you? Somewhat unusual, but you have to type in both names just like that. 5. How do I attack things? You can only attack monsters in "Active" mode. You can toggle between "Active" and "Passive" mode by hitting the "F" key. You then need to target the monster. Select the monster in question by clicking on it and then hitting the "F" key. Alternatively, you will automatically go into Active Mode if you have a monster targeted and you hit one of your action commands (pressing the "1", "2", or whatever numbers you have your abilities selected to). 6. How do I get HP back? Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 9 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The easiest way to recover HP is by resting. You must be in Passive mode to regain health. Put away your weapon (hit "F" to toggle between Active and Passive mode), and stand still. You regain HP very quickly when standing still and very slowly when running. You can get a full HP bar back just by standing still for 15-30 seconds; no items necessary. Many class abilities restore HP, such as spells like Cure, along with abilities like the Pugilist's Second Wind. You will also regenerate your HP after you complete a levequest and when visiting an Aetheryte. 7. How do I get MP back? Unfortunately for casters, there is not an easy way to get MP back just yet. Players can restore MP to full by visiting Aetheryte (such as the main Aetheryte at Camp Bearded Rock or Black Bush). Additionally, casting classes have Weapon Skills that restore some MP. You cannot get MP back from resting. 8. How do I get out of town? In the leveling guide, pictures demonstrating the pathway out of town are shown. Look up the city you are in for pictures showing you how to get out of town and get to places of interest. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. Players can change classes at any time simply by switching weapons. You must be in Passive mode to switch weapons. Hit the "Home" key to bring up the menu, then click on Gear. Select your Weapon and you will be good to go. Here are the weapon types for each class: Hora/ Knuckles / Claws - Pugilist Lances and Spears - Lancer Great Axes - Marauder 1-Handed Swords - Gladiator Bows - Archer Staff - Thurmatage Wand - Conjurer Pickaxe and Hammer (primary and secondary) - Miner Hatchet (trees) and Scythe (grass, fields; primary and secondary) Botanist 10. How do I buy new weapons? In order to change classes, you will need the starter weapons of the other classes. So, if you want to be a Pugilist, you will need to buy a set of Weathered Hora. If you look on the map in any city, look for the Sword Icon. At this weapon shop you should be able to find all the weapons you need for the Disciplines of War and sometimes Magic. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 11 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The other area you are looking for is the "Hawker's Alley" (LiminaLomisa) or "Exchange" area (Ul'Dah). Here you will find NPCs (computer players) who sell the weapons for all Disciplines of the Land. 11. What should I put my stat points in? What do stat points do? Here is what the creators say each stat point does: Strength: Increases physical damage. Vitality: Increases HP. Decreases physical damage taken (i.e. defense). Dexterity: Improve physical accuracy, and possibly improves evasion. Intelligence: Increases magic damage. Mind: Increases MP and improves curing potency. Decreases magic damage taken (i.e. magic defense) Piety: Increases magic accuracy. Note that stats seem to have a very minimal effect on performance, aside from the traits bolded. Do not overanalyze this. Regardless of Discipline, if you do not know what to get, initially know you will want a lot of Vitality to boost your HP (especially if you solo). Increasing Mind as a Discipline of Magic is also a good idea given that it increases MP. As a Discipline of War, you will want to stack Vitality, Dexterity, and Strength. As a Discipline of Magic, you will want to stack Mind, Vitality, Piety, and Intelligence. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. If you die, to come back to life you have to hit the "Home" key to bring up the menu and then select "Return". You will get "weakness" for a few minutes, which lowers your hp and damage. It goes away shortly though (if it is not gone within 5 minutes, log out and log back in). This section will be updated as more questions come in. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. In Final Fantasy XIV, players can switch between different classes simply by changing the weapon they have equipped. Additionally, players can share many abilities between different classes. For example, after unlocking Second Wind on the Pugilist, you can then use this ability on your Marauder as an extra self-heal. As a result, odds are you will end up playing several classes in order to fully outfit your character. Below, I have listed basic information on each class, such as role and relative strengths and weaknesses. More importantly, I have also included what classes are the best to start with (have the best abilities), so you can improve upon your leveling speeds. Gladiator: The Gladiator is the default tank class of Final Fantasy XIV. However, note that it is not the only tanking class as many classes seem to have abilities that generate threat (the Pugilist gets a "Taunt" for example). The Gladiator does get the ability to equip a shield but for some reason do not start with one. The cheapest shield available from the vendor costs in excess of 40,000 gil and has a level requirement of 14. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 14 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Pugilist: The Pugilist is one of the best classes to choose to level up. It gets an ability, Second Wind, which is a decent self-heal on a short cooldown. This makes leveling up a lot easier, no matter what your class. The Pugilist is a melee fighter that uses its hands as weapons. It deals slightly less damage than the Marauder or Archer, but has some added versatility. It has high evasion, a taunt, and self-healing, making this a great solo class and a decent backup tank. Lancer: Lancer is a damage dealing and support hybrid. Lancer does good melee damage and has several group buffs, one notable one being Spirit Surge, which grants all melee classes HP back when striking an enemy. As a result, Lancer is a good choice for people looking to play a damage dealing class in party settings. If you plan on playing solo, Pugilist is probably a better choice. With that said, Ferocity, which boosts damage, can be used amongst different classes. This is not a bad skill to pick up as you can Ferocity prior to using a Weaponskill to boost your damage. Archer: The Archer is a class which uses ranged attacks in order to deal damage. The Archer is Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 15 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE unique in that it needs to use ammo in order for it to attack. You have to buy arrows either from NPC shops, from player crafters, or craft them yourself. You can buy low level arrows for a cheap price from NPC shops. However, higher level arrows are expensive and as a result, playing as an Archer can be fairly effective. Archers are great at farming though, so you can recoup some of your gil lost on arrows. Marauder: The Marauder is advertised as the top melee damage dealer. This class is similar to the Dark Knight in FFXI, as it has many abilities which power up its damage at the cost of HP. The benefit of the Marauder is that it is great at dealing damage in parties. However, it does not have the same soloing power as the Pugilist. Additionally, expect this to be one of the most popular classes and as a result in low demand for grouping. Conjurer: The Conjurer is the Red Mage of Final Fantasy XIV. The Conjurer has a mix of Black (damage dealing) and White (healing and buffing) magic. Additionally, this class has access to a lot of regeneration, damage over time, and debuffing spells. This class is actually great at soloing and casters currently seem to earn more experience points for doing the same amount of damage as a Discipline of War. Note Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 16 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE that your offensive magic spells are weak, but your offensive non-mana skills (Spirit Dart and Radiance) are actually very powerful and close to the level of a melee class. Thaumaturge: The Thaumaturge is a lot like the Conjurer - it is advertised as being slightly more damage-oriented than Conjurer (gets more debuffs and less buffs). Personally, I think the Conjurer is a lot more powerful due to Shell and Protect (which currently are very, very strong). Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. Players starting here are able to move through town fairly quickly and have decent monsters to fight to level up off of. Here is a walk-through for the starting mini-quest. If you have already finished this, feel free to skip ahead: Upon creating a new character, you will be introduced to a cutscene and a starting quest. In the instance, run to the right and when you come to the choke point, take a left and move down the stairs. Duty will call. Now you get to watch a pretty cool cutscene and then fight the Gobbue. Hit the "F" key to enter active mode, then you can target the Gobbue by clicking on it or hitting the tab key. Once you have targeted it, you can attack it by pressing "1" (your basic spell). Allow him to show you to the adventurer's guild, a place known as "The Quicksand". After your cutscene finishes, talk to Momodi, and select "Some Like it Hot". You now have your first quest. Now, time for the leveling guide! Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. Recommended Path of Action: Complete the initial Leves from levels 1-4, and then fighting monsters in accordance with the map below. ---Note: This section starts with a tutorial. If you are new to the game, please read on before skipping ahead to the leveling maps (or whatever city you start in). If you are already an advanced player looking for the best leveling spots, feel free to grab all the Leves and skip to the leveling spot map. ---- Before you head out of town, speak with Totonawa and pick up every "BattlecraftLeve" you can. Battlecraft Leves are leveling quests that pay out a good amount of gil and experience. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 20 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE There is a set of Battlecraft Leves for each leveling camp in the game. You can only do 1 set every 48 hours, so be sure to do this early and often to make the most out of your quest timer. Note that in each town, the questing station has the same graphic. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 21 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Keep an eye out for this graphic, as this is the place you will get your Leves in each town. Note: I will use the term "leve" and "quest" interchangeably. Select all 4 quests for Camp Black Brush and all 3 Leves for Camp Dry Bone. You will be level 10 shortly so there is no point in not picking up these Leves now! Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 22 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Alright, head out town via the path below. For some reason, the exits to town are noe very clearly marked on the map. For that reason, I have included a graphic of the map with an exit from town: You can hit the "M" key to bring up the map. For some reason, you cannot run straight out of town by the Chocobo Stables but must take the side path shown above. Now, north on your map (navigate the map with the "IJKL" keys) you will see Camp Black Brush. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 23 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Walk into the center of the camp and you will reach the Aetheryte Crystal. Hit the "Home" key to bring up your menu and click Aetheryte at the top right hand corner of the menu. This will attune you to the crystal and bring up a menu. Click "Initiate levequest" and select "Moles for the Mauling". This is the levequest that goes along with the starter quest chain. Select Solo (higher difficulty rewards are of no consequence). As indicated by the tutorial, the highlighted section of your mini-map (top right of screen) indicates where to go to complete your quest. The Red Dots on the map are quest targets. Okay, so you complete your first quest. Hit the "Home" key to bring up the menu, select "Aetherial Node" and hit return to camp. You will get your reward, an HP/MP refill, and a trip back to camp. Now, instead of going back to town right away and continuing with your starter quest chain, I recommend doing all your Levequests first. This way, you will be able to accept them again sooner! You can do your questing during your downtime from Levequests. Note: Before continuing, you should by level 2 or 3 by now. You will need to add new abilities to your action bar and allot your stat points. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 24 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Click "Actions & Traits", then follow the clicking sequence below: 1. Select the Empty Slow on your hotbar. Make sure it is in row 1. 2. Select your current job (or whatever job you want to add abilities from). 3. Select your ability to add it to the toolbar. As you level up new classes, you can add abilities from different classes using the #2 section in the menu. It is possible for you to use abilities from several classes on your character to wind up with a completely unique build. You can allot your stat points by clicking on "Point Allotment" in the menu tab. You then click the plus marks to allot your points. You can always change this later (but it does take time - you cannot change these back and forth too quickly). Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 25 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Here is what each stat point does: Strength: Increases physical damage. Vitality: Increases HP and decreases physical damage taken (i.e. defense). Dexterity: Improve physical accuracy, and possibly improves evasion. Intelligence: Increases magic damage. Mind: Increases MP, increases healing potency, and decreases magic damage taken (i.e. magic defense) Piety: Increases magic accuracy. With that said, aside from Vitality and Mind, it seems the contribution from these stats is fairly minor. They do not seem to play major roles until later. Here is my recommended plan for stat point allotment: Discipline of War 1. Start off by getting Vitality to 40 right away without putting any points in other stats. 2. Next, bring up your Dex and Str alongside your vit, keeping vitality about 30 points ahead of Vitality. You want to hit 40 STR / 40 DEX / 80 Vit. This is contrary to the advice of many popular sites, but you will want the high HP total so you can solo leves and save time - good luck killing Cactuar at level 20 without 1,000 HP and Darkwing Devilets at level 30 without 1500 HP. 3. At this point, bring up DEX and STR to 50 a piece; making it 50 STR / 50 DEX / 80 Vit. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 26 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE 4. Now, bring up STR and VIT so that you are at 60 STR / 50 DEX / 100 VIT. This should take you to physical level 33. 5. At this point, you can start placing points in STR and DEX as you see fit. The benefit of vitality tapers off rapidly past 100, so going far beyond 120 Vit seems to have little effect. Discipline of Magic 1. Start off by getting Vitality to 40 right away without putting any points in other stats. 2. Next, bring Mind up to 40. 3. Alternate between Vitality and Mind (keeping them even) until you have about 80 of each. At that point, if you are nuking more you can put points in Piety and Intelligence. Most of your leveling up to this point will be done with Spirit Dart (or the Thaumaturge equivalent) so Piety and Intelligence are not important (at least until you nuke). There are some classes that have abilities which give bonus damage based on stats. These classes will benefit the most from attributes. A notable example is the Pugilist's Sneak Attack ability, which deals 1 bonus damage per 2 dexterity. Do not worry about it that much for now, as odds are you will probably change classes at some point and you can always reassign your stat points. So at this point, you can finish up your other 4 starting leves. Just start them at the crystal and work through all 4. If you need to rest for HP at any point during your Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 27 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE questing, simply put away your weapons and stand still. You will get your HP back pretty quickly. If you move around while resting, your HP regeneration is much, much slower. Note: The quest involving killing the Naked Moles is actually pretty tough compared to other Leve mobs, which are usually very easy. Note #2: When starting a leve, you have the option of "Invoking Guardian Aspect" for 110 points. This will slightly increase the rate at which you level up, so you can invoke it to get a few extra experience points (class points). It is very small though so don't worry about it if you run out of points. You get your points back over time though so do not hesitate to spend them. Note #3: If you die, to come back to life you have to hit the "Home" key to bring up the menu and then select "Return". You will get "weakness" for a few minutes, which lowers your hp and damage. It goes away shortly though (if it is not gone within 5 minutes, log out and log back in). Note #4: Once you get more comfortable with the game, you can select higher quest difficulties. These pay off better experience points pay outs and are only slightly harder. Be sure to be comfortable with the game controls and be a few levels higher than normal before attempting "Legion" level quests. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. This quest is very easy. You will want to do it on Legion Difficulty so you get the most experience points possible. I was able to get 500+ class XP per mob by picking Legion difficulty (even though I completed is solo). Flambert's Forgetfulness - Collect 4x Wraith cloth. This drops off the Bogy quest mobs. These mobs are very easy, so be sure to ramp the difficulty up to 5 stars. Sprightly Spriggans - Kill 6x Spriggan. This quest is also pretty easy. I was able to do it on Legion difficulty. These monsters do very, very little damage so be sure to set the difficulty to the max. Tunneling Trouble - Kill 6x Naked Mole. This quest is a bit tougher; I was able to do it on 3 Stars at level 3, but there was some close calls. I would not do this one on Legion difficulty (when playing solo) as you have to fight 3 mobs at once. Clearing Black Brush - Kill 6x Corroded Coblyn.Probably the easiest of all the Leves. You can solo this one on 5 star difficulty no problem. You should pick a high difficulty as otherwise you will not get much experience. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 29 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Weevil Panic - Kill 2x Bark Weevil and 4x Chiglet. The quest mobs here are very easy, but the Bark Weevil's poison can be deadly. I would still set the difficulty to at least 3 stars; if you die to poison after killing the Weevil, you can always hit the return button and continue. It is worth it for the extra experience points. Kill the Weevils last to be safe. By setting all the Leves to the max difficulty, you can almost get to level 8 and head over to Camp Drybone. The only Leve you have to be careful of is the Naked Mole quest. Note: Be sure to go back and talk to Momodi to pick up a free class ability. You do not have to continue the main storyline at that point if you do not want to, but you should pick up that extra ability before grinding. Camp Black Brush Leveling Spots Should you fail to make level 8 off Leves alone, you can level up in these spots (depends on class and a bit of luck what level Leves will take you to). If that is the case, you will have to do some old-fashioned monster-killing to get your last level or two,. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 30 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Below, I have marked the best leveling spots on your map. I prefer caves and "locations" when possible, as to limit running. Grinding on monsters that spawn in caves and "special" areas is much faster than roaming the map looking for a roaming monster here and there. Take a look at the map below: Each of the red boxes highlights a cave. The red arrowindicates which direction you enter the caves from. You have to go all the way to the back of the cave to find the monsters that spawn inside. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 31 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The blue box highlights an area around a tree that is a special spawning zone. For some reason, about a dozen Star Marmots spawn all around the tree at the top of this hill, so it is another great leveling spot. In fact, this is my preferred leveling spot up to level 8. Moles are harder to kill since they burrow while Star Marmots have no annoying abilities, which is why they are my favorite. To get to the blue box area, you will have to run all the way up to the top of the cliff via the path highlighted by the blue arrow. However, if the area highlighted in blue is overcamped (it really can only support 1 person), you can always head for the caves. If you are level 7 you may have to wander into the areas surrounding the blue box to find monsters while the Star Marmots respawn. Note that this area will probably be heavily camped around release, so you will have to stick to caves most likely during that time. However, if you are going back and leveling up a second class, this is a great spot. Caves are by far the best place to level up, because there are many spawns that all pop-up in a condensed area. Additionally, these caves are so far out of the way that you will face minimal competition. The area surrounding Camp Black Brush is just crawling in newbies fighting for all 2 of the Star Marmot spawns, so it is definitely worth your time to head out of the way. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 32 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Each cave supports 2 players. If there are more than 2 players at your cave, head to a new location at the map. One of the caves should be free. If one of the caves is not free, I still think it is better to be 3 people to one cave than split up entirely. Eventually, one or both of the players will leave your cave, so do not be afraid to stick it out or switch caves. I have yet to have to share one of these caves with more than one other person for any significant length of time, so you should not have a problem finding an isolated leveling spot. Second Round of Leves Every 48 hours, you can accept Levequests a second time. Perhaps you did not have time to hit level 8 and have the opportunity to do the levequests again before heading on to camp Dry Bone. When you are able to pick up the second round of of the level 1 quests, note that you can select difficulty from 1-5 stars. When you pick a higher difficulty quest, the leve offers very modest extra rewards (like a few % more gil). No additional monsters will spawn, but the ones that do have slightly more hp and do a significant amount of extra damage. Since you can attack them a 1-2 more times before they die, you can earn about 30% more experience points by selecting 5-star difficulty (Legion) over 1 star difficulty (Solo). Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 33 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE I was able to complete Legion level quests by level 5, though some were quite tough. The ones you have to be careful about are any quest that involves killing Naked Moles and Bark Weevils. Naked Moles are tough for their level, and Bark Weevils are weak but have a dangerous poison attack. You can die from the poison very quickly; so be sure to either buy an Antidote in town (anti-poison item) or run to the Aetheryte if you are poisoned (the Leves do not send you far from town). Camp Black BrushRecap (Levels 1 - 8) - Perform all 4 of your initial Battlecraft Leves issued from the Adventurer's Guild. This should take you to level 4 or 5. - Kill monsters in the leveling spots marked on the map above until level 8. If you do not mind killing the same monsters repetitively, it is perfectly acceptable to stay on the spots marked on the map until level 10. - Grab the Battlecraft Leves for Camp Dry Bone and head on over once you are ready. You get there via the east exit out of the Camp Black Brush Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 34 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Camp Dry Bone(Levels 8-13) Goals: Hit Level 13. Recommended Path: Complete all leves after arriving at camp (aside from the Stray Dodo Leve). Then, kill monsters according to the leveling map until you are level 15. By the time you get to Camp Dry Bone, you should be level 8. Be sure to pick up the Levequests if you have not already back in Ul'dah (you can use the Teleport function to move back and forth quickly). We will start out by running through the 3 Leves before doing any sort of static leveling. Camp Drybone Leve List Culling All Coblyns - Kill and Pursue Cavernulous Coblyn x6. When you kill the 5th Coblyn, the 6th will run away. When you catch up to it, 2 more Coblyns will spawn as a group, so you will have to fight 3 monsters at once. Be sure you recover to full HP before engaging the final pack (you do not have to chase right away) and this quest is very easy. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 35 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Where the Stone Floats - Obtain 3x Floatstone. This quest involves killing the same Cavernulous Coblyn in addition to Spriggans. This time, there is no surprises though just kill packs of them until they drop the items you are looking for. I was able to do this quest at 2 star difficulty by level 8, so it is pretty easy. Revenge of the Dodos - Kill and Pursue 7 Stray Dodo. NOTE: This quest is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than other quests this level. I recommend hitting 14 (at a minimum) before attempting this one solo, because it is much, much harder than the other ones of its level. Every 30 seconds you will see someone run away as they fail this quest. The Dodos have a lot of hp and deal a lot of damage for being quest mobs. The last Dodo will flee and spawn 2 Dodo, so be prepared to fight 3 when you chase the last one down. It really is a tough quest so do not be afraid to party up. Otherwise, you might join the legions of played who failed this quest: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 36 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Sand Yarzon Sweep - Kill Sand Yarzon x8. Nothing fancy here; this quest is easy and I was able to easily complete it by level 8. It could be done earlier. After the Battle - This quest is actually exactly like Sand Yarzon Sweep except you have to find 3 mobs at once instead of 2. The last Sand Yarzon will run and spawn two more when it gets to its final location. Still pretty easy but I would recommend only doing it on Solo difficulty if you are alone. Sucking Blood Again - This quest involves killing bug and swarm-type mobs, and is quite easy. If you are level 10 or higher, set the difficulty to 2 stars. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 37 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Treasures of the Smallfolk - Kill 8x Spriggan. This quest starts out with 4 Spriggan, which you must fight in pairs. When you kill the 3rd, the remaining one runs. When it gets to its final location, you have to fight 3 Spriggan at once, however, the final one runs again. When you pursue the second run-away Spriggan, you have to fight 3 more at its final location. It is actually not that bad; Spriggan have really low HP. It is soloable by class level 8, but be sure to set the difficulty to 1 star. Popotoes in Peril - Pursue and Defeat 6x Nutbiter Marmot. After you kill the 5th Nutbiter Marmot, the last one flees. Once it reaches its final spot, it spawns 2 Naked Moles. The marmots are very easy, but the moles will be tough for a low level player. This will be hard to solo prior to level 10 - grab a group if in doubt and select level 1 difficulty. Camp Dry Bone Leveling Spots Unfortunately, the payout for quests drops off significantly at this juncture. You will probably still be level 8, even after finishing all your Leves. This leaves us with no choice but to fight monsters to level up. If you are going to be killing monsters for experience points, you definitely want a good leveling spot. Here are the best camps in the zone for fighting enemy monsters: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. At the arrow, you can enter the mountain, at which point you will find a very sizeable area of condensed Thistletail Marmots. This is an excellent leveling spot as these mobs are weak, most players do not even know they can enter the mountain, and there are dozens of mobs right next to each other. It is perfect if you can get it without too much competition, and it will take you all the way to level 11, at which point you can move over to one of the red caves. The second blue box is another area of Thistletail Marmots, but it is not large enough to be a stand-alone leveling spot. It is a good place to stop if you are running the Copper Coblyn Trail (marked in green). Copper Coblyn - This is not the best leveling spot in terms of raw experience points, however, it can be great for leveling up blacksmithing or making some extra gil. Roam across the larger portion of southwest Drybone by following the green outline and kill all the Copper Coblyn you run across. Since these mobs drop all kinds of gems and ore, it can be a great way to make some extra gil. These mobs are pretty easy and generally pay out some decent XP, so it works in a pinch. The Thistletail Marmot spot is definitely superior if not overcrowded. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 40 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Drybone Shrew - Each of the red boxes surrounds a cave which has multiple, condensed spawns of Drybone Shrew. These monsters are pretty tough if you are level 11 or below, so be careful. The great thing about all of these caves is that they are so far away and there are so many of them that you should never have to compete with other players for mob spawns. Here is a tip: there is a small ledge that you can walk off in the depths of the caves. If a Shrew burrows (its TP move), you can simply walk off the ledge and it will pop back up, doing no damage. This will make the Drybone Shrews much easier to defeat. With all that said, If you can (competition), grind off the Thistletail Marmots. I find these to be better experience points. Once you hit level 13, head to the "Levels 13-14 and Beyond" section. Dodos - Do not bother - you can get better experience off the Iron Coblyn in Camp Horizon. Starter Quest - Ul'dah Version When you get a chance, return to the Adventurer's Guild in Ul'dah and talk to Momodi. Ask her about "Court in the Sands". This is the continuation of your first quest. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 41 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Right off the bat, she will teach you a new skill, which is nice. Each skill is different depending on your class. Once you get your skill, talk to Momodi again. She will give you a Coliseum pass. Now, head to the Coliseum (coordinates 5, 5) in Ul'dah. Once you arrive and head to the Gladiator's Guild, you will get a cutscene. You are now in an instance; head down the steps and accept your duty. Unfortunately, you have to lose this fight. It can take awhile to stand here and let your opponent kill you. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. Momomi will send you over to the Goldsmith's Guild which is in the south part of town. Head there and talk to Elecotte. Watch your cutscene and you will get 2,000 gil. Part 3 - Miner's Guild Next, you will be tasked to head over to the Mining Guild (southernmost tip of Ul'dah). Talk to Lilnette and select "Court in the Sands". In the next scene, go through emotes (execute the hitting the "n" key and selecting the right emote from the menu). Make sure you target F'lhaminn as you are going through the emotes. After you finish these up, make the emotes at the miners on the stage. You do not have to go through all of them but you have to target each miner separately. Talk to F'lhaminnCorguevais again. You will have a cutscene. Talk to Lilnette and you will get the next part of your job. Run out of town into the desert and you will get a menu pop up asking if you want to start the quest. Follow her (she will not follow you) to town. Every so often she will stop because a "Chinchilla" is in the way. Kill it to get her moving again. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 43 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Once you get to camp, watch a cutscene then talk to Ascilia. This will start another cutscene and finish this part of the quest. Now, you will be ordered to go back to the Miner's Guild. Head back to the Miner's Guild and as soon as you enter you will be rewarded with some gil. Part 4 - Alchemist's Guild To get to the Alchemist's Guild, head up one of the sets of stairs to the city's upper level (marked with small yellow arrows and a staircase on your map). Enter the Guild and talk to Nogeloix. Head to the door in the back and use your interact function to get inside. In the next area, run up to one of the doors and interact to get inside. You will have another cut scene and be tasked to head back to the Adventurer's Guild and talk to Momodi. The quest is now over and you will get a decent gil reward. Note: Nearly every other starting cities quest works the same way. Check your Journal if you are not sure where to go next - it will tell you. At some point, you will have to escort an NPC to a location by killing a few monsters. You get just over 10,000 gil as a reward throughout the quest line. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. Navigating the town is much more confusing than Ul'Dah, but there are more leveling spots, so competition should be a non-factor. Here is a walk-through for the starting mini-quest. If you have already finished this, feel free to skip ahead: Start off by running up to the door in the boat. You will ask if you wish to proceed (select "yes"). Watch the cutscenes, and when it is your turn to fight, select a monster by clicking on it or hitting tab and then pressing "1" (your basic attack). Kill the monsters, watch a few movies, and you will end up in Limsa Lominsa. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. Agree to accompany him to the Inn. You will be introduced to Baderon, who is the NPC responsible for starting your beginner quests. Talk to Baderon after the cutscene and select "Treasures of the Main". That is all that is required - you are now free to pick up Leves and start leveling up. Before you head out of town, be sure to talk to Piralnaut, who gives the Regional Leves for this area: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 46 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Talk to Piralnaut and pick up all the Level 1 and Level 10 Battlecraft Leves. Once you do that, head out of town and towards the first leveling camp (Camp Bearded Rock). At this point, we are going to focus on leveling up rather than on the in-game quests. We will mention the quests necessary to level up in the game, but for now we will put this quest on the back-burner. Getting out of town is not as intuitive as you might think, so here is how you exit. First off, exit the Drowning Wench by going down the steps at the north exit. Recommended Path of Action: Complete Leves and kill Wharf Rats along the road to Camp Skull Rock. If you are completely new to this game, I would recommend reading through the Ul'dah leveling guide for basic info on stat points and game mechanics. If you have a firm grasp on the game, feel free to continue on! Once you arrive in Camp Bearded Rock, head up to the Aetheryte and run through all the Leves you have. Here is the Leve list along with important notes: My Very First Adventure - If you are new to the game, you will have this Leve (otherwise you will not be able to get it). Follow along as it is your tutorial for starting out the game and it is very easy to finish. Mole Patrol - Kill 5x Rat Mole. If you are a brand new player, make sure you are targeting "Rat Mole" instead of "Sewer Mole", which is a normal monster that is a bit higher in level. Annexing the Rock - Kill 6x Chiglet. This is a very easy Leve; any player of any level should have no trouble with this. You have to fight two mobs at once but they are very weak. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 50 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Missing Teeth - Collect 3x Plague Rat Tooth. Another very easy quest - kill Plague Rats as suggested by your mini-map. When Bats Cry - Kill 5x Wingrat. This is the only Leve you actually have a chance of dying on. These mobs link in pairs, but are also aggressive. In other words, when you attack one of the Wingrats, one other Wingrat will also attack you. However, if you get close, pairs will also attack you. If you get too close to too many groups, you could end up fighting 4 Wingrats at once. It is still doable since these mobs have very low HP. Camp Bearded Rock Notes: Roselings -Roselings are higher level, aggressive (as in these monsters attack automatically) which sometimes are near leve spots. Be careful to avoid these. Treasure Chests: As you are doing quests, be on the lookout for Treasure Chests. These will spawn while Leves are active and usually contain gil. However, I have been able to find armor upgrades in these, so you never know what you are going to get! Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. A Square Maple Shield goes for a ton of gil around release - so be sure keep an eye out and open all your chests! Moving On To Skull Rock: You may have noticed that I only recommend staying around Camp Bearded Rock up to level 5. This is simply because I find that the areas around Limsa Lominsa are overcrowded and laggy, and there are actually better leveling spots near Skull Rock. You will easily hit level 3 or 4 by completing your initial Leves. If you have no Leves, you can always quickly hit level 5 by fighting Wharf Rats along the road on the way to Skull Rock. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 53 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Camp Skull Rock (Levels 5-13) Leveling Spots This is a bit backwards, but since you are already heading towards Skull Rock by level 5, I will start with leveling spots (you should hit level 6-10 before attempting the Leves, depending on the Leve in question). Here is the map: Plains Rats Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 54 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The area around the small building in the bottom right of the map is an awesome leveling spot that you can literally use from levels 3 to 13. Plains Rats are very easy kills and offer solid experience points. This area can support 2 players. Personally, I would recommend starting here then switching over to the Fireflies by level. There is a second leveling spot that involves a few Plains Rats spawns and it involves going in entering the tunnel at the top of the long blue rectangle and following it down to the water. By the water, there is a small space which has several Plains Rats spawns. It only supports a single player. Sewer Moles and Fireflies There is a great surplus of caves around Camp Drybone. All the red boxes highlight the entrance to caves which contain Sewer Moles and Fireflies. Fireflies are great because they are weak and slightly higher level, so they give great experience. Sewer Moles are not the greatest leveling mob due to the burrowing, but they are still fairly weak and in tight quarters, which makes them good leveling. Camp Skull Rock Leves Once you hit level 8 off of either killing Plains Rats, Fireflies, or Sewer Moles, you can start doing the Leves. Here is the Leve list along with important notes: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 55 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Claws and Wings - Collect 2x Scalepuk Talon and 2x Bat Skin. This is an easy Leve. Here is a great tip: This quest spawns 2 groups of 3 Scalepuks and 2 groups of 3 Wingrats. Usually, a single group will drop both quest items, and when you complete the quest, any remaining groups despawn. As a result, be sure to kill two groups of the same type before killing any of the other type in order to kill the maximum amount of mobs. Here is a simpler way of looking at it: Scenario A: You kill 3 Scalepuks and get both Talons, and then kill 3 Wingrats and get both Skins, the quest ends and you kill 6 mobs. Scenario B: You kill all 6 Scalepuks, and then kill 3 Wingrats to complete the quest and kill 9 total mobs. In Scenario B, you get 50% more experience points since you got to fight 3 extra monsters. Be sure to kill ALL the Scalepuks before engaging the Wingrats. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. This is one of the "pursue" quests. As you engage each group of Jellyfish, the last monster in the pack will "run" from you and move to the next location. In reality, the timing is not that important. No matter how fast you go, the monster will still go to the same location, and you simply have to make it to the next spot to continue fighting. If you need to, you can rest completely between waves - you do not have to chase right away. Even if you kill it with a ranged attack, the next monster will still spawn so do not worry about it. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 57 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE This Leve is easy as long as you give yourself time to rest if your HP drops. Do not worry about chasing right away if you are low on HP. You end up fighting groups of 3 Jellyfish, so take care that your HP is completely full. When you chase the last Jellyfish down, 2 more will spawn and the group will attack you. Do not be near until your health is full. Burning Down the Houses - Kill 1x Firestarter Imp. While killing a single monster sounds like an easy Leve, expect some more spawns. Once the Firestarter Imp gets to half HP, it will flee. When you approach it, it will spawn 2 Nightwolfs, which will also attack you. However, as usual, you can wait from a safe distance until you heal up before going in: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. Pick a quest, commence, and you are good to go. Start with "Spore Spoor" (if you have it), as this is the tutorial Levequest for Gridonia. This will show you how to do the Leves. Since there are more spawns than are required to complete the quest, you can usually kill an extra Firefly by Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. Beesvs the Pilgrims: Kill 6x Bee Cloud. Another simple quest - no surprises here. The only caveat is that the Bee Clouds are aggressive; get too close and they will attack. Be sure to engage 1 group at a time so you do not end up fighting all 6 at once. Reforesting Bentbranch: Kill 3x Nutbiter Marmot and 3x Stumbling Funguar. Make sure you recover HP between packs. Sometimes you will have to fight groups of 2 mobs back to back, so do not let your HP drop too low. An Old-Fashioned Exorcism: Kill 3x Evenfall Firefly and 3x Spriggan. This is the hardest of the Leves as Spriggans are aggressive, linked to the Evenfall Fireflies, and are in tight quarters. In other words, if you get too close to the Spriggans, they will attack you, and the Firefly will follow suit. It is very easy to end up fighting all 6 monsters at once. Attack them on the fringe to make sure this is not the case. Camp Bentbranch Leveling Spots After you finish your Leves, you should be level 4 or 5. At that point, go ahead and get to level 8 by fighting monsters in one of the many camps below: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. These are slightly higher level than the surrounding areas - would not attempt Shrews before level 4. Green: Outlines the two best leveling spots. Note that all of the camps circled are good leveling spots. In other words, there are tons of potentially good places to level around Camp Bentbranch. The problem is other players! Areas to the south and northwest of Camp Bentbranch will be the most crowded. Leves send players to the south, whereas the next camp is to the northwest. I prefer to level away from the starting camps due to reduced lag and less competition. If you are reading this guide shortly after release, level up in the spots away from camp. If this is months down the road, level up wherever you please as competition will be lower. I have found the absolute best spot is the spot surrounded by the green to the northeast of Camp Bentbranch. There are several Forest Funguar and Star Marmot spawns in a very dense area just outside of a cave. If you are a low level player (1-6), you can easily spend all your time fighting the monsters outside of the cave. Once you hit 7, you can start going into the cave, clearing it out, and coming back up to the top. I recommend hitting level 9 in this spot if you can before continuing on to Camp Emerald Moss. Recommended Path: - Fight monsters marked on the maps from levels 9-14. Complete Leves at level 14 and then proceed to the "Level 14 and Beyond" section. I am recommending leveling up first and doing Leves later. This is due to the fact that many of the Leves require you to pass by higher level, aggressive monsters. If you cannot defeat these monsters, you will either need to skillfully avoid them (impossible in some cases due to the narrowness of the road) or run away from them (a waste of time). As a result, it is much easier to level up to 14 and then go back and do the Leves later. It makes no difference in the long run but does require some time spent killing monsters. Fortunately, Gridania does have a lot of great leveling spots, which I have outlined below: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. These are easy monsters and tend to have very highrespawn rates. These spots can take you easily to level 13. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. If Camp Bentbranch spots were all full (such as around release), you should be able to get these two caves without competition. Purple: This is a very weird cave, unlike any other in the zone. It has massive amounts of spawns (over 10 instead of the normal 3-4) and several monster types. Just take a look at the picture: I count 8 Thistletail Marmot spawns, 2 Lightning Beetles (Firefly type) and 1 Phantasm (Ghost). You have to be careful of the Ghost as it is aggressive and slightly higher level, but I was able to kill it by level 10. The Phantasm has a small radius for aggression, so you can always pull monsters out of the cave if you are unable to kill it, like I did in the picture above. This is a great Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. Green: The Green areas indicate the best leveling spots. In addition to the cave above, there are two Thistletail Marmot spots which have a very high number of spawns. The green box to the North is probably the better of the two due to its isolated location, but the box to the West also has so many spawns it can handle multiple players. Next Step Once you hit level 14, you can finally do the Leves. Once you finish up your Leves, head to the level 14 section. Here is the quest list: Camp Emerald Moss Regional Leve List: I recommend doing Leves to go from levels 9 to 10. Here is the Leve list along with important notes: Note #1: The Bee Swarms and Lone Wolves often interrupt your Leves and are aggressive. Be sure to clear these out before engaging your quest mobs. You will also have to defeat these to complete your Leves very frequently. Note #2: If the Leve spawns Northwest of camp, it is possible that you will not be able to finish it prior to level 12, simply because you will have to pass through a lot of Lone Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. Either abandon the quest or wait until level 12 before attempting the Leves for this area. Fungicide - Pursue and Defeat 6x Fumbling Funguar. After you finish off the 5th Funguar, the remaining one will run. Once it gets to its target location, it will spawn 2 more Funguars, all 3 of which will then attack you. Be sure to hang back at a safe distance and recover your HP before chasing them. Sapped Sapplings - Pursue and Defeat the target enemies. This quest starts out with you killing 4x Naked Mole. When you get down to the last one, it runs. When it arrives at its target location, the quest appears to be bugged, and instead of 2 more Naked Moles spawning, 4 more do. In other words, when you do this quest, the mob runs and when you catch up, you end Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. My strategy for dealing with this is to kill 1 mole, run away (far away) and heal up, then kill 1 more, and repeat this process until you can kill them all. If you wait until level 14 to do the quests as suggested, it should be still be doable without running. Foresting Emerald Moss - Kill 4x Curious Galago and 4x Carrion Chiglet. Kill the Carrion Chiglets first as they have low HP. The Curious Galagohave moderate HP, high dodge rate, and high-damage moves. Spells and weaponskills take them out quick build TP on the Chiglets then tab over and quickly take out the Curious Galago. Odds are you will have to pass by Lone Wolves to complete this Leve, hence the level 14 recommendation. The Leves should take you to level 15. If you are not level 15 yet, you can hit level 15 by killing Lone Wolves around the questing areas to the Northeast of Camp Emerald Moss. Next Step Go ahead and move on to level 14 section of the guide. At this point, we will be linking up cities and moving throughout the world, so get ready! Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You should have a good feel for the game and at this point, I recommend picking up the Leves from a neighboring town. If you have not already noticed, you can do 8 Regional Leves per reset, regardless of level or location of the Leve. This means that if you have access to all 3 cities, you can do 8 Level 20 Leves in order to maximize your experience and gil. You can do 3 level 20 Leves starting in Gridonia, 3 in Ul'dah, then your last 2 in Limsa Lominsa. If you teleport between all the zones, this is pretty quick and very fast XP (be sure to save your anima!). As a side note on anima, it regenerates very slowly. You can usually buy teleports off low level players in town - try shouting and offering 2,000-3,000 gil. It is a small price to pay to save 30 minutes of running! You will make that back and more by doing the Leves. Travelling between Cities and Getting Your Telepoints Before you can warp from city to city, you will have to get the Telepoints. You have the ability to teleport to the Aetheryte Crystal of the city you started in by default. However, in order to teleport to a new city, you will first have to seek out the Aetheryte in that city. Ul'dah to Gridania and Gridania to Ul'dah: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. From Camp Bentbrush, head south along the road for about 10 minutes and you will reach thezoneline for Thanalan. From there, head southwest to Camp Drybone. Once you land on the other side of the Ferry Docks, head to east to Camp Horizon (look at the maps above) and then east to Camp Drybone. Pick up both Aetheryte crystals and then head south to Ul'dah. These areas all contain areas that have Lead Coblyn. This mob has very low HP and very low attack rate despite being a high level. You should have no problem taking out yellow or even orange difficulty Lead Coblyns. If your zone is packed with newbies, you can come here as this is a great area to level up. The Southern areas of the zone are less densely packed than the northern areas, but competition may dictate where you go. These mobs have low HP so it is important that you kill a lot of them (you should be able to kill multiple without resting). Light Blue Boxes surrounded by Green / Pink: In some of the northernmost areas, the Coblyn are accompanied by Silthid Swarm mobs. These are also great experience points mobs, but are definitely a harder kill than the Coblyn. These also drop Wind Crystals and Shards, which sell for a lot of money to crafters (rarest low-level shard). For some reason, the levels are not completely even between the Silthid Swarm spawns. If you look at the map above, the two light blue boxes are surrounded by green. The insect swarms here are lower level and perfect for players 13-14. In the Light Blue Box surrounded by pink, the Silthids spawn about 2 levels higher. This is the best spot to move from levels 15 to 16, though any part of the map will work. You can even stay here from 16 to 17 if you so desire. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 87 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Red Boxes: These red areas are caves and are certainly optional. They are not the best experience spots in the world, but when the competition is high, they are not a bad option. These are for players 16-18 and contain Sultan's Trumpet (moles). Each of the caves also has either Bloated Bogy or Will-'o-the-Wisp spawns. Bogies can be killed by players at level 16, but Will-'o-the-Wisp requires level 17 or 18 to be safe. The red boxes indicate what spawns at the cave. The northernmost and southernmost caves contain just Bogies (purple) and Shrews (red). The central North cave contains Will-'o-the-Wisp (dark red) and Shrews (red). The easternmost cave contains all three (possible spot to move from 18-20, though not my favorite!). Leves from 13-15: From Levels 13-15, stick to your Level 10 Leves. Since you will be in the Ul'dah region anyway, you can pick up the ones in Ul'dah (regardless of starting city) by talking to the quest-giver in the Adventurer's guild in Ul'dah. See the Ul'dah leveling section if needed for direction on Leves. You can also teleport to Limsa Lominsa or Gridania and participate in the Level 10 Leves as well in order to maximize your gil earnings and experience points from Leves. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. You will want to solo any Leve you can to maximize experience points. Do not get caught into the trap of grouping for Leves - it is much slower this way. Only group on the Leves you need help on. A quick note about difficulty: While setting the difficulty to 5 star on the level 1 Leves was great for experience, the difficulty of the level 20 Leves increases greatly with single star increments. Even 2-star leves can be very challenging upgrades over their 1 -star counterparts. Camp Horizon Leve List (Ul'dah): Sweet Vengeance - Pursue and defeat 6x Deathstroke Assassin, 1x Venomtongue Assassin. The 6x Deathstroke Assassin will spawn in a tight group. They do not link up but are aggressive. Be sure to pull them out 1 at a time with a ranged attack or taunt. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 90 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE When the last assassin runs off, it will spawn 2 more (very long run). If you are good, you can kill it while it is on the run. Run up to it out of combat and hit it with a melee attack, or cast a ranged attack or spell on it. Once you kill it, the other 2 mobs will spawn at the final location. The final two mobs, the Venomtongue Assassin and Deathstroke Assassin, you have to fight as a pair. Kill the Deathstroke Assassin first because it is a lot stronger. If you want to do this before level 20, you will need to partner up (me and my ally are 15 in the picture above). The Devilet Inside - Kill 2x Firestarter Imp. To complete this quest, you will need to kill the Wisp Familiar to get Brightash. You then target the Nightblade Assassin, open up Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 91 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE the menu, and click "Detect". You might have to go through multiple mobs and kill multiple Wisps. Once you spawn the 2 Imps from detection, kill them to complete the quest. This quest is easy enough to solo by level 17. In order to maximize experience points, try to kill everything. Kill all the Wisps, and all the Nightblade Assassin that do not morph into the Imps. Kill the Imps only after everything is dead. You can literally kill 14+ monsters on this quest for several thousand experience. Best Leve around! The Wight's Stuff - Collect 20x swords. In this Leve, you have to kill Wights, which spawn in pairs. This is a very tough Leve as Wights have very high HP and do a lot of damage. I recommend finding a friend to partner up with this one. Even at level 20, you will need a partner. If you are under level 20 and trying to do this Leve, be sure to bring 2 partners. The Lady's Bite - Kill 4x Carrier Ladybug. When you attack the Game Dodo spawns, they will either fight back or morph into Carrier Ladybug. You have to kill 4 Ladybugs to complete the quest. This is actually one of the easiest Leves as the Ladybugs are fairly weak. I was able to solo this one by level 20. If you are below level 18, you might want to grab a partner. Just One of the Dodos - Kill 2x Firestarter Imp and 2x Wisp Familiar. To complete this Leve, attack the Game Dodo packs. Some of them will morph into the quest mobs Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 92 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE (Firestarter Imp and Wisp Familiar). After killing those, you complete the quest. This is a very easy quest and can be soloed. Threading the Needle - Kill 10x Common Cactuar. The Cactuar themselves are very weak. They have a mild attack and very low HP total. However, they do have one special ability, 1000 Needles, which deals 1000 damage regardless of armor or number of players present: After you kill the 6th one, 3 more will spawn and you will have to fight all 3 at once. For that reason, burn them down as fast as you can. Use all offensive spells and attack very quickly. I recommend getting at least 1 partner for this quest and doing it on 1 start difficulty. If you are having trouble with this quest, build TP up on neighboring Thistletail Marmots so you can open up with 2 TP moves. This will nearly kill a Cactuar outright. You may have to run away after killing the first Cactuar to heal up - it all depends on whether or not they decide to use 1000 Needles. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 93 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE A Leg Up: Obtain Cactuar Leg x5. Another Cactuar quest; the Cactuar themselves are fairly easy, but 1000 needles is always a threat. You have to fight them 3 at a time; fortunately they are not aggressive. This is soloable but keep it on 1 star. Securing Horizon's Edge - Kill 5x Amateur Footpad and 5x Amateur Raider. In this Leve, you have to fight 1 Footpad and 1 Raider at once over 5 packs. The Footpads do a lot more damage so kill those first. I was able to solo this at level 18, but it was pretty tough. I would grab a partner before level 20 and solo it once you hit level 20. It is worth a lot of EXP if you can solo, so if you can solo it if you can. Camp Tranquil Leves (Gridania) Leaders of the Pack - Uncover and Kill 4x Firestarter Imp. To complete it, kill the Evenfall Firefly for Brightash and then use it on the Ringtail Pteroc. Unlike the version of this quest at Camp Horizon, it is not a good idea to kill Ringtail Pteroc for experience points. Ringtail Pteroc are actually pretty tough mobs, so do not kill these for experience points unless you are level 20+ or are in a group. This quest is easily soloable at level 16, and I would recommend soloing it. Avoid fighting the Ringtails, though. A Feast Fit for a Queen - Collect 32 Queen Bees. To complete this quest, kill Bee Swarms to get the Queen Bees. Very easy and soloable by level 16. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 94 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Reforesting Tranquil - Kill Nutbreaker Squirrel x3 and Nutbiter Marmot x6. This quest is also self-explanatory and soloable by level 16 (and would recommend you solo mobs are too weak for a group). Impish Intentions - Uncover and eliminate the following targets: Firestarter Imp x4. This quest is very easy and soloable by level 16. Walk up to the quest mobs and attack them; some will randomly turn into imps. Once you kill 4 imps you have completed the quest. Forsaken Sacs - Obtain the following items: Striped Tail x5. The tails drop of the Pteroc quest mobs. It can be soloed at level 20, but I would recommend finding a partner for earlier levels as it is not particularly easy. The quest mobs have low HP but also dish out a lot of damage, so if you have under 1,000 health this quest may present a challenge. Grab a partner if you historically have trouble with these leves. Hidden Behind a Hide - Kill 2x Firestarter Imp and 2x Evenfall Firefly. Another "attack a group of mobs and see if they turn into imps" quest. The Imps and Fireflies are easy, but the Foraging Doe are another story. Find a partner if you can. If you cannot, fight the Foraging Doe, and if they do not morph, run away. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 95 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE If you are a high level player you can probably kill them outright; I was able to do so by level 20 but it was very tough (killing 1 mob, running away and healing up, then going back and killing the last one). In short: Find a partner. Camp Bloodshore Leves (Limsa Lominsa) Annexing the Shore - Kill 3x Wood Weevil, 3x Carrion Chiglet, 3x Syrphid Cloud, 2x Carrier Ladybug. Players will have to fight packs of 3 mobs, which should not present a challenge by level 18 (solo). The only tough part is after defeating the last pack, a pair of tougher lady bugs spawns and attacks right away. Casters should go into the last pack with full buffs and DoW with full hp. Players who have been able to solo Leves easily will want to consider making this a 2-star leve once they hit level 20. Escape from Cell 17B - Uncover and Kill 2x Firestarter Imp. To complete this quest, first kill the Evenfall Fireflies to get then use Detect on the Game Dodo to make the Imps spawn. Be sure to kill the extra Dodos and Fireflies before completing the quest to maximize exp gain. This quest can be soloed. The Dodos give 200+ class EXP per kill, so do not let them go to waste. To complete this quest, approach and attack the Raging Rams. The groups will morph into imps, which you kill to complete the quest. This quest can be soloed. Save the Lettuce, Save the World - Kill 11x Game Dodo. Straight-forward quest that has you kill Dodos in pairs. Very easy to solo (and would recommend doing so). Sating the Simians - Pursue and defeat 2x Curious Galago. After you engage the first group of 2 and kill one of the pair, the survivor will run and spawn 2 more Galago, making you fight three at once. Despite this, it is easily soloable by 20 for a Discipline of War. Conjurers may need to group prior to level 20. Make this quest easier by nearly killing both of the first two monkeys before finishing one off. That way, when you do finally kill one and its friend runs away, it will be nearly dead by the time you engage it again. To Catch a Thief - Obtain the target items: Bent Silver Ingot x3. This is the hardest Camp Bloodshore Leve. In this quest, you have to kill the Amateur Footpads, Amateur Raiders, and Amateur Highwaymen to get the Bent Silver Ingots. These NPCs come in pairs and are fairly tough. You will have trouble soloing this quest prior to level 22, so bring a partner and still set the difficulty to 1 star. The Amateur Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 97 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Footpads in particular are the hardest as they use high-damage weapon skills, so kill them first. Levels 16-18: Before I show the leveling spots, there are a few important things you should take care of: Complete as many level 20 Leves as possible. Do not do level 10 leves any more at this point. Pick up all 8 level 20 leves by travelling to Ul'dah, Gridania, and Limsa Lominsa. If you are low on anima, you can buy a teleport in town (/shout) for 5000 gil. You will make that back and then some by doing the high level leves. If you have both a gathering and a fighting class, pick between your Discipline of War/Magic and Discipline of the Land for your leves from this point on. They share the same 8 cap limit, so you do not want to be locked out of your main class' quest. Just to reiterate that point - the level 20 Leves pay out Guild Marks and a large number of faction points - you will need these for new job abilities (guild marks), new quests (faction), and new gear (not in game yet, but faction related). Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 98 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE I strongly recommend picking a craft to level via local leves if you have not already (see the crafting guide). If you do not want to craft, level whatever craft makes your weapon, so you can repair your own weapons. Simply doing the local leves each reset only takes ~30 minutes (if you are doing leves at the camps anyway). Pro tip: The Gridania local leves are the fastest since the camps are the closest. Leveling Priority Your first priority should always be the Leves. Once you are done the leves, here are the best leveling spots to grind mobs. I have also noticed some great camps that work best as a duo (1 Discipline of War and 1 Discipline of Magic per party), so I am going to be noting those as I see them as well. Levels 16-18 Leveling Spots Best Leveling Area: Limsa Lominsa - Lightning Beetles This is my new favorite leveling spot for players level 16-18. There are 3 caves, all which contain Lightning Beetle spawns. These are easy for players to kill and drop Lightning Crystals and Flax (two very valuable drops) with high regularity: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 99 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The problem with the spot above is that the competition is intense. There are only 3 caves (each one can support 1 player), and there are more than 3 players between the Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. To make matters worse, the high value of Lightning Beetles makes these caves a high-traffic area. If you can grab one of the caves above, great, if not, here are some alternatives: Cassiopeia Hollow: This is an exclusive leveling spot but does take some work to get to. I have only seen a 1 player during my entire time online in this spot: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. To get to it, enter Cassiopeia Hollow (near Camp Bloodshore) and enter the main area by the Aetherial node. From that central room, move into the outer ring and travel over to the blue area. Be careful of getting too close to the Sea Hares. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 10 2 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE West of Camp Bloodshore: If all the spots above are full, this spot is a decent leveling ground that can support dozens of players and cannot possible be too overcrowded: This place is not exactly hidden, but it is crawling in Moraby Mole and Syrphid Swarms and is the perfect leveling spot from 16-18. If you are playing with a friend (1 Discipline of Magic and 1 Discipline of War), you can kill the Roselings too quite easily, which are rich in the bottom part of the area and drop valuable items (such as Growth Formula Alpha). This area is huge and literally crawling in spawns. Over 1 dozen different players could farm here at the same time without a problem. With that said, if you want a different location, there is 1 other cave of Moraby Moles that is a bit more hidden: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 10 3 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE You enter the tunnel by the first arrow. Inside the tunnel there are 3 moles that can support 1 person (very fast re-spawns). Also, once you leave the tunnel, hook an immediate right and enter the cave at the second arrow for an isolated leveling spot. Gridania Leveling Spots: Personally, I recommend heading over to Limsa Lominsa since this area has the best leveling spots from 16 and beyond. However, if you are stuck near Camp Tranquil, there are a few okay leveling spots: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 10 4 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The target mobs here are Faerie Funguar, Sultan's Trumpet, and Black Bat. The red circles indicate Fairie Funguar, whereas the red boxes indicate the two caves with Sultan's Trumpet and Black Bat spawns. The green circle indicates the 1 location where 3 Faerie Funguar spawn in one spot. My favorite location here is the cave closest to Camp Tranquil. There are two Faerie Funguar spawns outside; you can kill the Faerie Funguar when they are alive, and then go into the cave until they respawn. The biggest problem with this zone is competition the adequate leveling areas are way too small and there are just too many players here. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. Ul'dah: The number of viable spots for solo leveling in Thanalan are very limited. Let us take a look at the old leveling map: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 10 7 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The cavescan work, however, they have a lot of "special" spawns like Magicked Bones and Will-'o-the-Wisp. These are impossible for a player of this level to solo. However, if you are leveling up with a partner, they work great. With a duo of 1 caster and 1 Discipline of War, you can burn through levels 16-19 in these caves. The Wights give out almost 500 class EXP per kill. Conjurer makes a great Wight killer as Protect, Shell, and Shock Spikes significantly reduce damage taken. Conclusion: Good areas for 2 teammates leveling up together, but for everyone that wants to play solo, head to Limsa Lominsa, then northwest and the large camp marked on the map there. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 10 8 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Levels 19-22: Leveling Priority: As usual, your top priority is the level 20 levequests. You should be able to solo the majority of your levequests (save perhaps the few tough ones at Camp Horizon). Fighting "Down": If you have trouble killing the recommended monsters (some classes are not as good at soloing as others), then you can always fight "down" a few levels. You can stay in the "level 16-18" zones until level 21 without a serious penalty. In fact, you will earn more crystals by doing so. Monsters start to ramp up in difficulty quickly at this level. While you could kill yellow and orange monsters easily at level 10, it becomes much harder at level 20. Do not be afraid to say in the 16-18 zone if you think you will have trouble. Just remember this: It is much faster to get 70 XP a monster and kill a monster every 40 seconds then it is to get 300 xp a monster and take 5 minutes to kill it. Gear: If you are still running around in level 1 gear, fix this. You can either craft it yourself or buy it. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 10 9 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE If you are looking to buy new equipment, there are a lot of players selling things in bazaars near the repair NPC in northern Ul'dah (near the repair guy) and you should have plenty of gil from doing leves. Buy yourself armor upgrades and try to find a new weapon, whether it be from the NPC or from another player. Many NPCs sell level 1020 weapons for a reasonable price (40-90k gil - just 1 round of level 20 leves). Armor should be bought from players. Sheepskin pieces generally run from 10-30k and are found in abundance in Ul'dah player's bazaars. If you are a caster, check out the bazaars near the Weaving guild, as you will often find players selling cloth gear crafting there. Last but not least, try using the /shout function to find players selling gear. Guild Marks Once you hit level 20, you can buy new abilities with Guild Marks. These can greatly increase your character's strength. You can earn Guild Marks as the reward of some of the level 20 Leves. Once you accumulate 5,000 Guild Marks, be sure to visit your guild to complete your class quest and to pick up new abilities. More details on this to come. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. I have been through Thanalan and The Black Shroud, but I exclusivelyleveling up off the Bloodshore Bells. These mobs have 1 powerful attack, but they have low HP totals which more than makes up for this fact. Here are the appropriate spots: Both red boxes indicate huge areas where Bloodshore Bells spawn very thickly. The upper right location can easily support 3 groups. To get to the upper right square, enter the tunnel at the red arrow and follow it all the way to the island. Note that in the upper right location that there are a few Roselings Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 11 1 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE that spawn here and there. The Roselings are easy to kill, but are aggressive, so be careful not to bump into one on accident. Pro tip: The Bloodshore Bell's special attack does do a lot of damage (around 240). However, it is magic based. The Conjurer's Shell spell literally cuts this down to 60-80 damage per hit, making these mobs virtually harmless. If you are having trouble killing Bloodshore Bell at level 19 (you should not unless your gear is below average), you could always keep killing Moles until level 20. The new abilities available from Guild Marks at that level will vastly improve your character's strength, allowing him to easily take out these monsters. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. Also, at this point, you should be getting to the point where you can solo the easier leves on 2-star difficulty. Level 30 Leves: At level 23, you can pick up the level 30 leves. These are quite tough to solo, so I would recommend skipping these until the next section. Path of Action As usual, you will complete all of your Leves before leveling up. However, grab all the level 20 Leves and Faction leves at Limsa Lominsa, as that is where all of our leveling will be for the next few levels. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 11 3 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Leveling Spots 22-24 There are actually two great leveling locations from levels 22-24: Cassiopeia Hollow and a few caves west of Bloodshore. Cassiopeia Hollow Cassiopeia Hollow is a great location for leveling up from 22-24. The target mobs are the Jellyfish, which are happen to be called Cassiopeia. Here are the camps: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 11 4 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The Cassiopeia spawn all over the place, but the main camp is near the Aetherial Gateway. This is usually overcrowded, so I prefer to head over to the camp marked in red. The area marked in green is my favorite part - no aggressive monsters and plenty of Cassiopeia - enough for 2 or 3 players even as the re-spawn rate is very, very fast. There are only two things you have to watch for are Sea Hares, which sometimes use an AoE attack that hits for 1,000 damage to all targets nearby. These are not aggressive, but randomly discharge their attack if you get too close. Run by quickly and you should not have a problem. Avoid running in staggered lines or hanging around them for too long. There is another angler-type mob (Orubos) which is aggressive as well, so keep your distance from any fish you might see. As a side note, the blue area marks a good leveling spot for players 18-20 (Bug Swarms) and a good farming spot for Flax, Wind Crystals, and Wind Shards. Caves Near Bloodshore The caves near Bloodshore contain Sea Slugs, which are a good leveling monster for Discipline of War characters. Here are the relevant locations: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 11 5 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The blue caves both spawn 3x Sea Slugs and are also a viable leveling spot. I do not consider it quite as effective for experience points, but the gil-earning potential here is high. The Slugs have several valuable drops: Viscous Secretions, Hawksbill Shell, White Coral, and Red Coral (albeit the Red Coral is very rare). Note: The Sea Slugs do not aggro, but will use an AoE attack if you stand too close to them. As a result, you do not want to fight a Sea Slug near neighboring slugs - be sure to pull it away. The AoE attack does hit for 280 damage, but the slugs do not use it until about 1 minute into the fight. If you kill them fast, they usually only use it once, and for a Discipline of War class, this is no problem. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 11 6 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE A tip for both camps: Shell reduces the Cassiopeia's special ability, Binding Tendrils, to about 70 damage (from around 240). Shell also reduces the Sea Slug's special ability, Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. At this level, you can now start picking up the level 30 leves, many of which start in dungeons (like Cassiopeia Hollow which we leveled up in previously). Note: We will be putting up a level 30 Leve guide shortly. Again, for the sake of time, stick to the leves close to our leveling location. This way, you will not have to spend too much time travelling and can spend more time leveling up. For example, if you chose to level at Cedarwood, you can pick up the best paying level 20 Leves at Bloodshore and the best paying level 30 Leves at Cedarwood and Cassiopeia Hollow. You can then run through all 8 leves since all the crystals are close to each other, and then start leveling at Cedarwood. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 11 8 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Level 24-26 Leveling Locations There are two viable leveling locations you can use from levels 24-26. It is really your choice and you can level up at whichever spot is more convenient for you as both work. The Mun-Tuy Cellars This is my preferred location simply due to lack of competition. The area is huge and has massive amounts of viable leveling mobs and no amount of competition can make it unplayable. Enter the Cellars just north of Camp Emerald Moss in Gridania. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 11 9 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The green areas all indicate spaces where there are good monsters to kill for experience points at this level. The best monsters are the Mun-Tuy Squirrels, but the Cellar Puks and Opo-opo work too. The Cellar Puks and Opo-opo seem to pay out slightly more experience points, but are more difficult. If your gear is good and you have buffs like Stoneskin, you can easily pull all 3 monsters. Regardless, there should be enough squirrels for you to kill if your character is a bit weaker. My preferred spot is right by the Aetherial Node. Due to the Mun-Tuy Squirrels high evasion and the Cellar Puk's hard-hitting weapon skill there is a chance that you will die. This is a minor inconvenience if you set your home-point Aetherial Node (simply interact with it to do this). You can also stop at the node every 10 minutes to recover your HP and MP, which is a boon for casters and melee classes with Stoneskin and Cure as abilities. The red areas mark aggressive enemies. You want to avoid the humanoids and bats. Note that these enemies have a really short leash and will reset back to their location merely a few steps beyond their spawning point. If you want to get to a fresh farming spot, simply run by them - they will de-aggro very shortly and will not chase you far. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 12 0 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Camp Cedarwood This is another leveling spot that is pretty effective and also very convenient. It is close to Limsa Lominsa, Camp Bloodshore, and Cassiopeia Hollow, making it very easy to complete all your leves with limited running. The only downside to this camp is that competition could be an issue. This area has a lot of Fat Dodo, which are the target mob. Here is the leveling area: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 12 1 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The only problem with this area is that it is not very hidden. As a result, competition is often pretty high. The Fat Dodos do spawn unusually thick for an outdoor space though, so this area can handle about 7 or 8 different players. If it is overcrowded, the Mun-Tuy Cellars always are an option. However, do remember that the Cedarwood location is NOT as good as Muy-Tun Cellars. Dodos just are not as good of XP mobs as Puks and Squirrels due to the Dodo's high HP total. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 12 2 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Levels 26 – 30: Leves At this point, Leves are no longer a major focus. You should have earned enough gil by now simply by collecting crystals and doing leves. From this point on, leveling up by grinding monsters must make up 95% of your experience if you want to hit 50 (hopefully they will buff leves at some point, but for now, this is the only option). Leves should be done when permitted by the sake of convenience. For example, ifyou are on your way to Nanawa Mines to do some leveling, you can pick up the Leves for this zone. This way, you are not wasting any time doing the leves since you were already going to Nanawa. I repeat, at this point, I no longer recommend going out of your way for leves at all. The level 30 Leve List will follow the leveling spots section. Note that level 30 leves are much tougher than level 20 ones, and you will not be able to solo every single leve, so check out that section to get a difficulty gauge on your leve. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 12 3 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Leveling Spots Levels 26-30 This leveling stretch is a bit longer than the previous sections, but that is because I truly feel that no spot compares is faster than Nanawa Mines for moving from 26-30 quickly. You can enter Nanawa Mines just north of Camp Black Brush (which is just north of Ul'dah). You can pick up the level 30 leves for this zone, most of which are soloable, and the leveling spots are plentiful. Here is a map: Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 12 4 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE The red spots mark the leveling spots. In these areas, you will find Cellar Puk which are the target mobs. In particular, the red boxes mark the best leveling camps. On each platform, there are 3 Cellar Puks (which are not aggressive). However, as you kill them, Will-'o-the-Wykes (wisps) randomly spawn in their place. The Wisps are aggressive, slightly higher and level, but very easy to kill. Everything on the platforms has a very short "leash", so if a wisp spawns on top of you, you can always run away and be just fine. The real key here is the Wisps. These give bonus experience points (more experience points for the same amount of damage) compared to normal monsters, and also drop Obsidian with high regularity (sells for 5,000 gil a piece). This can make you a lot of money (it did for me - I sold several hundred thousand gil worth of Obsidian from leveling here for these levels). The Puks also provide very good experience points and are very easy, provided you dodge backflip (run behind the monster when he is casting it; more details HERE). The Puks also drop Wind Shards as their primary type (which sell for 150 gil a piece), as well as Lightning Crystals (1500 gil a piece) and Cotton Bolls (500 gil a piece). By level 29, most of the Puks will be blue (easy difficulty). This is not a problem since they spawn so thickly and respawn so quickly. It is much faster to kill these a Puk every Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 12 5 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE minute for 100 experience points then it is to earn 300 experience points every 5 minutes. Additionally, on the map you can see some blue markings as well. These are for skeletons, which can earn you some money if you have a person or two in your party as they can drop Skull Eyepatches. See the gil guide for more details. Note: There are no alternative locations. Nanawa Mines is hands-down the best spot to level up from 26-30, both in terms of the rate of experience earned and the gil you can make while doing it. Below is the level 30 Leve list. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 12 6 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Level 30 Leve List Escape from Cell D72 - Kill 4x Darkwing Devilet. This is the hardest level 30 leve period. For this quest, you first kill packs (3 at a time) of Bombs for Bomb Eyes. You then use this detect function on the Crabs to uncover the Darkwing Devilet. This quest is a lot tougher than its level 20 counterpart. The bombs are quite easy, but the Devilets made quick work of me at level 23. You have to fight 2 Devilets at a time and they chain-cast ice spells for 250 damage a piece and use Impish Incantations which hits for 700 damage! You will need 3 people to do this prior to level 26, and want 2 people even at level 30. Bring friends or do not take the quest. Protecting the Pilgrims - Kill 3x Vile Gnat and 6x Syrphid Cloud. In this quest, you have to fight 1 Vile Gnat and 2x Syrphid Cloud at one time. Kill the Vile Gnat first as it does 2-3x as much damage as the Syrphid Clouds. This leve is easy and can be done on 1 star solo by level 28 (Shock Spikes helps a lot). The only thing you have to watch for is the Orobon (aggressive Angler-type monster) near the last pack. Avoid it as it is a tough kill for even level 30 players. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 12 7 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Spooring Spores - Kill 6x Lowland Nannygoat and 3x Lowland Billygoat. At the start of this quest, you have to fight 3x Lowland Nannygoat. These have high HP but do not do a lot of damage. Once you kill 2, the final one runs away. When the first fleeing mob gets to its final location, it spawns 3 more sheep (yes, you have to fight 4 Sheep at once). Once you kill 3 and get the final remaining sheep to about half health, it will take off. When the second fleeing Sheep gets to its final location, it spawns 3x Lowland Billygoat, which are slightly stronger than the Nannygoats, and then you must fight all 4 Sheep at once, once again. This quest is tough - bring a partner. Even with Shock Spikes, it is fairly challenging. Neighboring non-aggressive mobs make AoE attacks like spells and weaponskills somewhat challenging to use, and the fact you have to fight 3 groups can be very draining on mana. Bring a partner and set the difficulty to 1 star. Consider soloing it once you are level 30 and have Shock Spikes (either as Conjurer or set as a sub). Necrologos: The Boughs Above - Locate the missing Necrologos pages, release the creatures trapped within, and eliminate them. For this quest, you have to investigate the beams of light in the north room. Sometimes, 2 Nannygoats will spawn, which should be easily soloable by level 27. When you get all the pages, you will have to fight 2 Fevered Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 12 8 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Doe and one Nutcracker Squirrel, which should be soloable by level 27. This is one of the easier leves in Cassiopeia Hollow. Nanawa Mines Necrologos: Adamantine Wills - Locate the missing Necrologos pages, release the creatures trapped within, and eliminate them. To get the pages, you fight Chitinous Coblyn. These are very weak and easy enough for any player. Upon collecting the 5th page, 2 Megalocrab spawn, which are a bit tougher. When you are at 4/5 pages, be sure to get full HP bar and buff up before killing the last pack of Coblyns, because as soon as you get the fifth page, the harder crabs will spawn. With that said, the quest is still soloable for most by level 28. Two players could easily do this quest by level 23 (when you are first eligible to collect). Be careful to avoid the large rooms marked on the map with cursive text, as these contain aggressive, higher level monsters. Necrologos: Torn Asunder - Locate the missing Necrologos pages, release the creatures trapped within, and eliminate them. This quest involves interacting with beams of light to collect the pages. Once you have all 4 pages, 2 Bog Yarzon will spawn, which Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 12 9 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE are of hard difficulty. They are easily soloable by level 30, but may present prior to level 26. Bring a friend if you are under level 30. The problem is that the final area you get to has a lot of aggressive enemies. The key here is to collect the pages in the far east part of the map first, that way when the final Bog Yarzon are spawned, you do not have to fight them around other aggressive monsters. Run through the room with the tough monsters, quickly examine each node, and then run off. You do not have to kill the spawned monsters - just get the pages. The Potter's Price - Obtain 4x Brightash. The quest mobs in this quest, the Fire Elemental and Wandering Wisp, are really easy, but once again the aggressive monsters in Nanawa get in the way. You can complete this quest solo simply by quickly killing the wisps and then running away from the normal, aggressive monsters. The quest is soloable at level 23 - just avoid the aggressives. If you have trouble sneaking around, to kill the aggressive enemies, you will need several players or to be around level 30. Overtime in the Mines - Kill 10x Deepground Puk. This quest is easily soloable if you remember that when a Puk starts casting its Backflip ability, run behind it. You will evade the ability every time by doing this. Without their weaponskill, Puks are easy. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 13 0 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE With that said, even if yu dodge their weaponskills, Puks still do have a powerful melee attack. If you have very low HP (under 1200), consider bringing a friend. Spirited Below - Kill 6x Wandering Wisp. The wisps are aggressive and all spawn together, so you end up fighting all 6 at once. Bring a partner as fighting 6 mobs at once is not easy for any class. Once you kill 5, the last one will run, ultimately spawning 2 more Wisps when it gets to its final location. Corpus Adamance - Uncover and eliminate 2x Darkwing Devilet. For this quest, you have to kill the wisps for Brightash and then use it on the Ladybugs to uncover the Darkwing Devilets. Truth is, you do not actually have to use the Brightash - you can just attack Ladybugs and if you get the right one, the imps will appear. The Imps do use Impish Incantations (which does around 650-700 damage), so be careful. Bringing a friend is wise unless you have over 1500 HP so you can survive 2 Impish Incantations. Nophica's Wells Necrologos: Amongst Leaves Most Green - Locate the missing Necrologos pages, release the creatures trapped within, and eliminate them. In this quest, small lights appear on the ground which you must interact with (like you would with Aetheryte). This will either gives you pages from the Necrologos or summon monsters which you must Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 13 1 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE kill for the quest. Overall the quest is easy and is soloable by level 24; just make sure you buff before testing out any of the interaction points. Volatile Vitals - Obtain 3x Voidsend Blood. The monsters for this quest, Gorged Djigga, are fairly weak, but use a high-damage suicide weapon skill, which deals both you and them large amounts of damage. To solo this quest, you will want about 1,200 HP to be able to survive Mortal Mist. If you have that much health, it is easily soloable. If not, bring a friend. Dodos and Popotoes - Defeat 8x Feral Dodo. In this quest, you have to fight 2 packs of 3 dodos. Midway through the second pack, two of the Dodos will take off, much like during the level 10 leves. When the 2 Feral Dodos get in place, they spawn 2 Lowland Nannygoats, which are much tougher than the Feral Dodos. This is tough for a level 2426 player to solo on 1 star. Bring a friend and set the difficulty to 1 star until you hit level 28. At that point you should be fine to solo it. A Drop in the Pond - Kill 9x Feral Dodo and 1x Wind Elemental. You have to fight 3 dodos at a time, which are of moderate difficulty. When you kill the third pack, a Wind Elemental spawns and attacks. Fortunately, it is very weak. This quest is easily soloable at 24 and can be done on 2 stars by level 30. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. You may not resell, or copy this guide in any way, shape or form. 13 2 Chrono Guide FINAL FANTASY 14 MASTERY GUIDE Necrologos: The Light's Corrivals - Locate the missing Necrologos pages, release the creatures trapped within, and eliminate them. Interact with the light beams to collect the pages; when you get all 4 pages, 3 Downcast Hippocerfs spawn, which are fairly tough. It is tough to solo reliably prior to level 28. Securing Nophica's Wells - Kill 10x Vile Gnat. For this quest, yuo have to fight 2x Vile Gnats at a time. They have low HP but do a lot of damage; it will be tough to solo prior to level 28. If you are having trouble, you could always quickly kill one Gnat, run away, and then come back and finish off the other once you heal up. To make these mobs easier, y0ou can dodge their high damage Thunderstrike ability run to the side once they disappear and it should miss. The real problem with these mobs is that they use Shock Spikes, which will hit for 60 damage every time you swing. I recommend bringing a friend prior to level 28 and keeping the difficulty at 1. Cedarwood (under construction): Necrologos: Lightsome Verdure - Locate the missing Necrologos pages, release the creatures trapped within, and eliminate them. For this quest, you have to kill Vile Gnats for the 5 Necrologos pages. The Gnats have low HP but do a lot amount of damage with Thunderstrike - focus one down quickly and be sure you get the jump (attack the Gnats from behind and it takes the second Gnat awhile to get in combat). In this quest, you have to interact with the light beams to find pages. sometimes when interacting with the light, an Ice Elemental spawns. When you collect all three pages, you have to fight 2x Downcast Hippocerf, which are fairly easy. This quest is soloable at class level 26. Where the Goat Goes - Kill 10x Lowland nannygoat and 2x Lowland Billygoat. This is a very straight-forward leve - simply kill all the goats. You have to fight two at a time; the Nannygoats are very easy and the Billygoats are moderately difficult. This quest should be soloable by level 27. Humblehearth The Goodwill Traders - Collect 5x Leather Hunting Vests. For this quest, you have to kill the NPC poachers for their vests. These come in packs of two. They are fairly tough and this quest is hard to solo prior to level 30. To make this quest easier, kill the Raptor Poachers first, as they use high damage weaponskills frequently. Additionally, the Wolf Poachers are Pugilists, so Shock Spikes really hurts them (two swings for each of their melee so they get stunned literally every time they attack). You can generally avoid this by backtracking (as the mobs respawn when you kill the packs), so be sure to check your map after killing the fourth pack so you can avoid the cave. Necrologos: In Shadow Bemantled - The Ever-reaching Claw - Locate the missing Necrologos pages, release the creatures trapped within, and eliminate them. For this quest, when you interact with the beams, they spawn 2 Vile Gnats. When you get all 4 pages, 3 Karakul Ewes spawn, which are very easy. However, the Gnats are fairly tough and make this quest tough to solo prior to level 28. Set it to 1 difficulty. Underneath the Shell - Kill 1x Darkwing Devilet and 1x Water Elemental. For this quest, you have to attack Delta Crabs to see if the Water Elemental and Darkwing Devilet will spawn. The Crabs are easy, but you have to fight the Water Elemental and the Darkwing Devilet at the same time. Kill the Devilet first as Impish Incantations does 650 damage. You should have 1,500 HP and be level 30 to solo this on 1 star - otherwise bring a friend. The final battle is one of the toughest you will have. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. For this quest, you have to kill Curious Galago (easy) for the pages. Note that one of the spawn areas appears to be inaccessible here - it is in the cave which has an entrance just to the east of the spawn point. The Galago are so weak you can run in and kill them and then run out and ignore the bats when you are collecting pages. If you are on your last set of pages (at 4/5), you will want to clear the bats before killing the Galago as you do not want to fight the 3 Cactuar that spawn when you get all 5 pages with bats also attacking you. The Cactuar are very weak but do use 1,000 Needles. You will need about 1,300 HP to solo this quest and it can be done at any level. The Mun-Tuy Cellars Tracking the Pack - Pursue and defeat 5x Skulking Wolf. You have to fight packs of 3 Skulking Wolves. When you kill 2, the last one will run and spawn 2 more. This is the final pack. Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved. This will be hard to solo prior to level 30, so bring a friend and set the difficulty to 1. The nonaggressive monsters that clutter the Mun-Tuy Cellars make it hard to use AoE abilities. Undercutting the Competition - Obtain 5x Gnat Antenna. This quest involves killing pairs of Vile Gnats for their Antenna. These Gnats seem to have slightly less HP then other similar Gnat quests and as a result it is soloable by level 28. Necrologos: The Ever-reaching Claw - Locate the missing Necrologos pages, release the creatures trapped within, and eliminate them. In this quest, when you examine the light beams to collect pages, you occasionally have to fight 2 bats. These are pretty tough and may not be soloable prior to level 30. Their Ultrasonics weaponskill and blood drain abilities make them quite challenging. After getting all the pages, you have to fight 2x Bog Yarzon, which are also pretty tough. Bring a friend and set the difficulty to 1 star for this quest. Solo it once you hit 30. My Fey Lady - Uncover and eliminate 2x Darkwing Devilet. For this quest, you have to attack Carrier Ladybugs, some of which will randomly morph into the Darkwing Devilet. The Darkwing Devilets are actually quite strong and repeatedly use and ability, Impish Incantations, which deals about 650 damage even with Protect and Shell up (it seems to ignore them entirely). You will want around 1500 HP to solo this quest (enough to absorb 2 Impish Incantations). Copyright © 2010,ChronoGuide. All Rights Reserved.
