A 35-year-old man is hospitalized with abdominal pain, fever (103°F), and
bloody diarrhea for 2 days after a trip to Mexico 2 weeks ago. He denies
any nausea and vomiting. During his vacation, he took ciprofloxacin
as prophylaxis against traveler’s diarrhea. His brother has a history of
ulcerative colitis. An abdominal radiograph reveals a normal-appearing
colon without dilation. His stools are negative for C difficile toxin. Stool
cultures and ova and parasite results are negative. A colonoscopy shows
ulcers in the proximal ascending colon, along with mild to moderate diffuse
colitis (Figure 1). Biopsy results are pending.
Which of the following therapies is most appropriate in this patient?

A. Metronidazole

Antibiotic Prophylaxis Cards
A Brief History of Endoscopy
Available in English and Spanish
This vividly illustrated book recounts how in
just over a century physicians have advanced
from a mere glimpse of the portals of the
alimentary tract to its deepest recesses and
how simple visual diagnosis has progressed
to the application of the most sophisticated
diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. Most
importantly, the book eloquently defines how
light has brought truth to the elucidation of the
furthermost reaches of the human body. The
144-page, hard-bound book was published in
2000 and was authored by Irvin M. Modlin,
MD, PhD.
This pack of 25 convenient pocket cards
contains the most current recommendations
for antibiotic prophylaxis.

In this educational DVD, ASGE doctors guide
viewers through a colonoscopy and an upper
endoscopy examination, including preparation
instructions, what happens during the
procedure and what to expect after the exam.
Viewers will follow real patients going through

the way learn about the endoscope and how
it functions, what conditions the doctor can
diagnose and treat, and when normal activities
may be resumed after the procedure. The
DVD contains two separate videos, one about
colonoscopy and one about upper endoscopy,
each approximately 10 minutes. The menu
also offers a continuous play or “looping”
option for each video. Note: This is not an
