Your Civil Partnership
Naming Ceremonies
We look forward to sharing with you the joy and
happiness of your special day. Listed below are
some simple guidelines to ensure your ceremony
runs smoothly.
Please inform the Registrar in advance if either of
the partners wishes to be escorted into the
ceremony suite.
Both partners should arrive approximately 10 minutes
before the scheduled time.
A member of staff will be available to welcome you.
A naming ceremony is a special way to celebrate your
child’s birth and to welcome the new arrival into the
family. It is an opportunity to make your commitment
to the child before your family and friends and to
choose those closest to you to also pledge their
special relationship with the child.
You will have an opportunity prior to the ceremony
to discuss your personal choices with the person
appointed to conduct your ceremony.
A certificate signed by the parents, supporting
adults and the local government officer conducting
the ceremony will be presented at the end of
the ceremony.
Although, these ceremonies have no legal status, they
are simply something that parents can choose to do
as a public gesture of love and commitment to their
child. The record of the ceremony cannot be used as
a legal document or as proof of identity. Neither is the
ceremony legally binding on those who take part in it.
Our professional staff are here to help and guide you
through all you have to do and say.
The exchange of rings, or a gift, although not
compulsory, can be very special.
To ensure there are no interruptions during the
ceremony it is important that all mobile telephones
and pagers are switched off.
Guests should be seated in the room before the
couple arrive.
The Ceremony is conducted by a Registrar or
Assistant Registrar.

Citizenship Ceremonies
Citizenship Ceremonies are available to successful
applicants to obtain British Citizenship. These formal
ceremonies mark their new rights as a British Citizen,
as they make promises to accept their responsibilities
and duties.
Renewal of Vows Ceremonies
A renewal of marriage vows offers couples a personal
ceremony to honour their married years together.
Every renewal of marriage vows ceremony will
be unique.
Each couple is able to create their own personal
ceremony by selecting their choices from the options
available. Special people in the couple’s lives can be
invited to take part, children, grandchildren, original
wedding guests. Couples can be of any age and
married for any length of time.
7
Your Guide to Civil Ceremonies in North Lanarkshire
If you were married abroad and would like to
celebrate back home with family and friends,
this is an ideal way to bring everyone together.
The ceremony requires the prospective new citizen
to swear an oath or affirmation of allegiance to the
Sovereign, and make a pledge to uphold the values
and laws of the United Kingdom and encourages new
citizens to play an active role in their local community.
Two people will witness the signing of a
commemorative certificate of the event.
In North Lanarkshire, we aim to make the ceremony
enjoyable and memorable, whilst maintaining the
dignity of the event. The new citizen can celebrate
their ceremony in the presence of friends and family,
if they wish.
If you have your own ideas and wish to add them to
the ceremony, please discuss these with the person
appointed to conduct your ceremony.
The ceremony is attended by persons who will speak
on behalf of the Community and on behalf of HRH
The Queen.
The renewal of marriage vows and any document
issued following the ceremony have no legal status.
The provost of the council or his representative will
present the Certificate to each candidate at the end
of the ceremony.
New citizens will receive a welcome pack which
includes information on their local community,
a passport application pack and information on
voting procedures.
Following the ceremony, refreshments are available,
and there is the opportunity to take photographs
to serve as a permanent reminder of the event.
Group ceremonies are normally held on the last
Wednesday of the month.
Ceremonies are held at registration offices throughout
North Lanarkshire, and their location varies depending
on the residencies of the prospective candidates.
Provided we have received the appropriate
documentation from the Home Office, we can at
very short notice, arrange individual ceremonies
at a time and a place to suit your needs.

Willowbank House is a fine early 19th century villa in the Victoria
and Town Centre Conservation Area. Originally a family home,
the house has seen many uses. It was upgraded and opened
as the registration office for Airdrie in February 1997.
Airdrie
Airdrie Office is located close to the town centre, on the main
road between Airdrie and Coatbridge (A89) and is easily
accessible by all forms of public transport.
Willowbank House,
37 Alexander Street,
Airdrie ML6 OBA
Entrance to the ceremony suite is via a set of French doors
opening into a spacious bright conservatory, tastefully
decorated in a modern style, highlighted by the use of light
wood furnishings. The ceremony suite can accommodate
a maximum of 40 people, including the principal party.
Incorporated within the ceremony suite is a separate waiting
room for the principal party.

There is an allocated parking area for the principal party
with direct access to the ceremony suite. Parking for guests
is available at the front and side of the building with two
dedicated spaces for disabled guests. Wheelchair access is
available and disabled toilet facilities are located in the foyer.
Willowbank is situated in its own grounds providing an idyllic
setting for photographs of your special occasion.
Bellshill was originally a weaving village. With the discovery of
coal it became industrialised and is now a bustling town in the
heart of North Lanarkshire. The registration office is housed in
a distinctive red sandstone building dating back to the early
1900’s and was originally built as Bothwell Parish Chambers.
The Bellshill office is centrally located with easy access from
the M8 and M74 and is well served by train and bus routes.
The large ceremony suite is tastefully furnished in Rennie
MacIntosh style. It is self contained with changing rooms
for the principal party and boasts a picture gallery. It has
a first floor location which is accessed by lift or stairs and
accommodates up to 70 guests.

The town of Coatbridge is situated half a mile from the M8
motorway, the main link between the cities of Glasgow and
Edinburgh. The main industries in the town were traditionally
steel and coal production. However in latter years this has
diversified into many service industries. Evidence of the history
of the area can be seen and experienced at Summerlee
Heritage Museum located at the west end of the bustling
main street.
The registration office is located at the east end of the main
street and is situated on the first floor of a suite of offices.
Whilst there are no dedicated parking facilities at this time,
there is limited free public parking nearby. The town is also
well served by public transport with three train stations and
a main bus terminal within walking distance of the office.
The ceremony suite can accommodate up to 36 guests.
Owing to the location of the ceremony suite access may
be restricted for people with walking difficulties.
Coatbridge has many public parks situated in and around
the town including Drumpellier Country Park with its formal
gardens, loch and bird sanctuary. More traditional parks can
be found in the West End and Whifflet areas of the town.

Alternatively, there are many scenic areas in and around
Cumbernauld providing ideal locations for photographs
following your ceremony, including the grounds of Colzium
House within easy driving distance.
Cumbernauld lies at the centre of Scotland on the classic
shortest route between Forth and Clyde. Cumbernauld derives
from the Gaelic name Cumar-nan-Alt meaning the Meeting of
the Waters. The development of road and rail transport in the
nineteenth and twentieth centuries highlighted Cumbernauld’s
central position resulting in the establishment of a New Town
in the late 1950’s.
Kilsyth is approximately 6 miles north of Cumbernauld
and lies in the Kelvin Valley with the Forth and Clyde Canal
running nearby.
Cumbernauld is centrally located between Glasgow and
Stirling just off the A80.
This accommodation is suitable for small intimate ceremonies
with two witnesses.
The Registration Office is situated on the ground floor within
the Council Offices, Bron Way, Cumbernauld. Access to
the office is through the main reception area where staff are
available to direct the guests into the office. A disabled toilet
is situated off the main reception. There is ample parking
available outside the office including dedicated disabled
parking spaces.

Colzium Estate falls within the district of Kilsyth, which is centrally
located between Glasgow, Falkirk and Stirling. Kilsyth was originally
spelled Kelvesith, meaning “Kelvin-lands” which is the area around
the headwaters of the River Kelvin.
The Estate is not only famed for its architecture, but also its impressive
surroundings featuring the “Walled Garden”.
Kilsyth is easily reached by following the A803 from Glasgow
through Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch, and from there follow
local signs for Colzium Estate. The building of the Colzium House
mansion started in 1783 and considerable additions were made in
1861 by the Edmonstone family of Duntreath. Retired Town Clerk
W Mackay Lennox purchased the house in 1937 and subsequently
presented the “House and Policies” to Kilsyth Burgh in memory of
his mother. Colzium House now incorporates a suite of community
rooms and a small museum of local history.
The room available for civil ceremonies can accommodate up to
50 guests. It is situated on the lower level of the house with French
windows opening onto beautiful gardens. There is a separate waiting
area for the principal party if they wish to be escorted into the room.
The upper level contains a banqueting hall available for reception
hire and larger civil ceremonies which can accommodate up to 100
people. This may be particularly appealing to parties wishing the
convenience and simplicity of a ‘one venue ceremony’.
Access to the ceremonies room on the ground floor is suitable for
a standard wheelchair, however, banqueting hall access may cause
difficulties for disabled guests.
Motherwell steel fired by Wishaw coal, has taken part in
engineering adventures the world over and it was, perhaps,
in the natural process of things that two sister towns linked
together by so much industry common to both, should
amalgamate. Motherwell and Wishaw Registration District
came into being in 1967. Previously both towns were
separate registration districts known as Dalziel and
Cambusnethan respectively.
Motherwell
The registration office is situated within the Civic Centre
headquarters of North Lanarkshire Council. The entrance to
the office is on Windmillhill Street on the main Wishaw/Bellshill
Road, easily accessible via the M74 motorway. Motherwell
railway station is a short taxi/bus ride away and there are
bus stops located on both sides of the road outside the
Civic Centre.

Following your ceremony, photographic opportunities can be
found in the gardens at the Civic Centre and also at various

Shotts derived its name from the legendary giant Bertram
Shotts and has its roots in the coal and ironwork industries.
Throughout the years these industries have disappeared and
have been replaced with small companies involved in food
and engineering production. Shotts still maintains its friendly
character and is also famous for being the home of House of
Edgar Shotts and Dykehead Pipe Band who have been World
Champions many times.
Shotts is situated midway between Glasgow and Edinburgh
