time. She went on to become an
NMT instructor in 1998, and
even created the NMT department at Canyon Ranch. Additionally, she became certified in
Yamuna Body Rolling in 1997,
and certified in Kinesio Taping
in 2008.
Not even considering joining
other massage therapy organizations, Barbara has been pleased
with her AMTA membership. In
fact, at one time she was Education Director of the AZ Chapter,
back when a written and
practical exam was required to
join. She spent time testing
prospective members in both
Phoenix and Tucson, She also
joined the AMTA’s National

The AZ Chapter has 15 long-time AMTA
members. Two of them have been
members for 35 years, and 13
have been members for 25 years.
To celebrate their anniversaries,
we will be highlighting them for
upcoming newsletters.
This issue, the focus is on
Barbara Grandstaff, LMT, NMT.
She lives and works in Tucson,
and graduated from the Desert
Institute of the Healing Arts in
1986. She has also been an
AMTA member since then.
Before becoming a massage
therapist, she had worked in
hospital settings as a registered
respiratory therapist. Because she
was experiencing burnout, she
knew she needed to do something
different. She said it was serendipity that led to her career as a
massage and bodywork professional. A small newspaper ad for
an open house at the Desert
Institute caught her eye. Attending the open
house and hearing what Margaret Avery Moon
(the owner of the school) had to say about the
professionalism of the program and the field of
massage therapy convinced Barbara that this was
the right path for her.
Throughout her professional bodywork career
Barbara has worked in many different settings
including part-time and full-time at Canyon
Ranch in Tucson, as a sole business owner, and
currently as an independent contractor with 30
other practitioners at Tucson Touch Therapies in
Tucson. She likes working as an independent
contractor the best because it’s like having a
private practice without the majority of the

Hello Arizona Chapter!
Well, another year has come and gone and
here we are in 2012!
I hope that last year held many positive
experiences for you all, and that your journey
towards health and wellness for yourselves and
your clients was a
smooth and successful one.

updates as they arose.

who covered subjects
that you requested via the surveys on the evaluation forms that you received at the end of the
workshops.
January 2011 brought us Julie Goodwin, presenting ‘Massage for Clients with Cancer’ in
Tucson and April 29th we held a FREE 3 CE
course on ‘Thai Massage for Low Back Pain’, with
Winnie Cain. This was followed by a 12 CE hour
workshop with Judith Delaney on ‘Whiplash
Syndrome’, in Chandler.
In August, we were up in Prescott, with our
National President Elect, Cynthia Ribiero,
presenting a FREE workshop on ‘Prevention and
Rehabilitation of Shoulder Injuries’, to a packed
house of AMTA members.
In October, we were in attendance at the
National AMTA Convention, in Portland,
Oregon. During the opening ceremonies, our own
Chapter Humanitarian award winner, Garnet
Adair, was awarded the National Humanitarian
Award, for her work helping to clothe the world’s
girls (see page 9).
The House of Delegates was much more
productive in 2011! After reevaluating the
methods for submission and deliberation, the
HODOC (House of Delegates Operating Committee) implemented more specific instructions
and directions for debate by delegates, of submissions to the HOD. As a result 3 of the 6 Position
Statements presented, were passed.
While at the National Convention, all board members attended Leadership Training courses, and I as president, attended the President’s Council
meetings, as well as the National Board meeting held before the convention.
Our Marketing and Public Relations committee applied for and received
a proclamation signed by Arizona’s Governor attesting to the viability of
massage therapy and proclaiming a week in November as Massage Therapy
Awareness Week. We added a link on our website to allow members to print
out and display the proclamation if desired.
Our January 2012 workshop was presented by James Waslaski. It was a
16 hour workshop on ‘Orthopedic Massage for Lower Body Conditions’.
Attendance was wonderful and his presentation and instruction were well
received. Because it was such a lengthy workshop, we held our General
Membership Meeting on Friday night from 7–9pm. Frankly, I thought that
the only attendees would be the committee and board members, but I was
pleasantly surprised when we had around 30 people attend! It’s SO nice to
know that some folks are truly interested in what’s happening in our
Chapter. Of course, it always helps to have wonderful ‘arrival gifts’ as well as
door prizes and the occasional raffle drawing, handled so well by our awesome Awards Committee.
I really want to reiterate the fact that you DO NOT have to be an
AMTA member to attend our membership meetings OR our continuing
education workshops. Those who attend our meetings regularly, understand
and hopefully acknowledge the benefits of doing so. Members as well as nonmembers can enjoy the opportunity to network with their peers, get to know
the members of the Board of Directors, learn about upcoming events and
workshops, participate in raffles for really neat stuff, receive door prizes and
above all, learn what makes AMTA so responsive and supportive of its
members (HINT: we’re member-driven!)
You can learn how our House of Delegates works at the National
convention and how it affects our organization as well as our profession.
Learn how our elections are held and take an active role in our Chapter’s
direction.
I hope that all of our Professional members take advantage of the
National and Chapter election processes and surveys, and take the time and
make the effort to vote, as this is your opportunity to make your voice and
opinions heard.
Shortly, you will be receiving a survey regarding our chapter’s Strategic
Plan (see page 9). Keep an eye out for the Strategic Plan survey and please fill
it out. Let us know what’s important to you….
So, even if you have no ‘aspirations’ to become an elected board member,
or to help out by volunteering your time and efforts on a committee…at the
very least, attend a General Membership Meeting. You’ll come away with a
greater understanding of the AMTA and what’s happening locally in our
Chapter, and realize what a great group of folks we have here in Arizona!

AMTA-AZ Receives ‘Give Chapters A Hand’ Award

At the 2011 National AMTA Convention in Portland,
Oregon, the Arizona Chapter was awarded Four Hands in
the large chapter category of the ‘Give Chapters a Hand
Award’. Five Hands is considered distinguished, Four
Hands is excellent, and Three Hands is above average.
The purpose of the award is to ensure chapter innovation
and excellence above and beyond the basic requirements,
and to provide an opportunity for chapters to communicate the opportunities they’ve seized, fun they’ve had, or
the challenges they’ve overcome for the year.
Our chapter was given Four Hands because of diligence
in submitting reports on time, effective communication
with members through our website, newsletters, and email
blasts, commitment to our members shown by the free
continuing education workshops we have presented, pride
in members who have volunteered by paying for the
Chapter Humanitarian and Meritorious Award winners
to attend national conventions, and concern for our
communities by donating to food banks in northern
Arizona, Phoenix, and Tucson, and by making donations
to the Chapter Humanitarian Award winners’ causes.

Seattle in 1990 and the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996.
She says the reasons she joined the AMTA are partially because of her background in
allopathic medicine. Strongly rooted is the idea that she should support her profession. She
also appreciates the continuing education courses the AMTA provides, and the amount of
effort the AMTA puts into their membership services.
If there is one piece of advice Barbara could give to massage therapists new to the profession it is to have them explore different areas of bodywork, then concentrate on only one or
two areas they are drawn to. They should then study these areas to a level of excellence, rather
than dabbling in many different modalities. They can learn so much more from their clients
and their clients’ bodies by building a wealth of experience through focused work.

Join us on our Lymph Tour USA as we visit the History of MLD (manual lymphatic drainage) and its founders both in
Europe and the United States. Enjoy learning about MLD’s spread and development in both the spa and medical
industry, with Elisa DiFalco who worked with Dr. Robert Lerner who was one of the founders of LANA and later
owned the famous Ft. Lauderdale Clinic. On the tour you will learn Lymphatic Anatomy and Physiology, Pathology,
Assessments and enjoy the hands-on lab, to experience first-hand what patients in the U.S. experience with MLD.
The lab includes: Compression garments, lymphosize and practicing a full body basic MLD you can use in your daily practice.
Elisa DiFalco graduated from the Florida College of Natural Health with a diploma in Massage Therapy in 1997,
following in 2002 with a BA in Behavioral Sciences from Lynn University and in 2006, with a Masters of Science in
Occupational Therapy from Barry University. Since that time, she has become heavily involved in the treating and
instruction of MLD across the country. She has personally logged in more than 15,000 hours of hands-on experience
working full time with MLD clients and patients. She works for 2 of the leading Lymphatic Physicians in the U.S.
(Dr. Robert Lerner and Dr. Michael King) offering a regular radio broadcast for patients.
Their clinic (LTS Clinic of Ft. Lauderdale) offers: diagnosis, treatment, research, support groups and insurance
education for Lymphadema Treatment.
Elisa has taught MLD Certification and Specialty Courses since 1998. She is also LANA Certified, is an adjunct
instructor at Barry, FIU, BCC University in Health Sciences for LMT, PT, OT and RNs, and is the current Florida State
Massage Therapy Education Chair. She is also an accomplished author, publishing 20+ articles and a book entitled “In
the Gym With God”.
She volunteers with Tiffany Fields at the Touch Research Institute and is also a martial arts and piano instructor.
Most importantly, she notes that feedback surveys have consistently rated MLD Institute Courses with high ratings
with the presenter being asked to return. She feels that it is nice to know that attendees’ needs are truly met.

Help Determine the Direction of the Chapter
On behalf of the Chapter, we would like you to participate in
helping us by completing a survey. This will assist the Chapter
in creating the next revision of the AMTA-AZ Strategic Plan.
Your input will determine the direction for the Chapter and
its resources for the next five years.
The Chapter’s first Strategic Plan was approved by the
membership in 1995, and revised in 1999 and again in 2007.
Then, like now, the membership was surveyed in order to
gather input and ideas from the membership before creating
goals for the Chapter. The following are some of those goals as
well as what the chapter has done to meet those goals:
1. Develop a comprehensive communication plan
In 2009, the Chapter had SpinWeb, a leading web solutions
firm, create the Chapter website. The Chapter uses the
website to communicate information to members such as
Chapter meetings, upcoming workshops, and volunteer
opportunities. The Chapter continues to communicate with
members via the newsletter and starting in 2008, via email
blasts. A Facebook fan page was also created to communicate
with our members and others who support our Chapter.
2. Monitor and safeguard state regulation.
The Government Relations Committee Chair, who is the
Chapter President, regularly attends state massage therapy
licensing board meetings and gives an update on their proceedings at every Chapter meeting.
3. Provide members with quality educational workshops.
The Education Committee regularly surveys workshop
participants and Chapter members about what they would like
for continuing education. Based on the findings of these
surveys, the Chapter has brought in nationally known workshop presenters such as Cynthia Ribiero, James Waslaski,
Carole Osborne-Sheets, Joseph E. Muscolino, Ruth Werner,
and JudithDeLany.
4. Create opportunities for networking.
The Marketing Committee has been providing networking
opportunities through events such as the Arthritis Foundation
Walk, the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure and the
American Academy of Family Physicians Conference. The
Chapter meetings are also networking opportunities and often
include lunch for members to enjoy while getting to know
each other.
The Chapter is ready to set new goals…and we seek your
help in identifying those goals.
This summer, the AMTA-AZ Board of Directors in
conjunction with Committee Chairs will spend a weekend
together to craft the next revision of the AMTA-AZ
Strategic Plan. This activity will be facilitated by Garnet
Adair, Past AMTA-AZ President. Garnet has extensive
experience in strategic planning for the AMTA and other
organizations. This revision will be presented for approval by
the membership.

a Girl Around The World” project

By volunteering her time sewing beautiful
dresses, Garnet makes a difference in the
lives of girls in poverty around the world—
orphaned girls, girls separated from their
families, girls in distress, girls without a
change of clothes. She sews dresses from
pillowcases, sheets and fabric. She accepts
donations from people cleaning out their
closets as well as spends her own money
buying supplies. Every spare moment she has
is devoted to creating clothing that can make
a huge difference in a little girl’s life.
Garnet joins several other Arizona Chapter
Humanitarian Award winners who have gone
on to win the AMTA’s National Humanitarian
Award—Judith Anderson for her work
massaging people living with HIV and AIDS;
Lavina Tomer for her work involving domestic
violence through Wingspan (www.wingspan.org)
in Tucson, Arizona; and Winnie Cain for her
work with Akha Women’s Foundation
(www.akhawomensfoundation.com).

Our Wondrous Human Bodies

Each time I participate in a “hands on”
workshop, I am amazed by the intricate, involved, nuance and subtleties of our human
bodies. We are amazing machines, works of art,
powerfully human—so much alike and yet so
very individual. Imagine that all of us receive
and perceive information differently and our
processes are varied. Our combinations of
seeing, hearing, feeling and knowing, plus taste,
smell and touch, create our difference in styles.
In communication, we try to speak our own
received perceptions to get our points across.
This is why two people can experience the same
circumstance (say an accident or fire), and yet
have very different viewpoints of what actually
occurred. Plus, reality is only what two people
can agree upon.
Through our commitment to communication
and language, we share. Whenever I have a new
client, I explain to them “How” massage works,
what they will experience, what is expected of
them, of me and the aftermath. They leave much more educated about
their amazing bodies. This empowers them to realize the benefit of relaxation and regular stress reduction. I also encourage their involvement
while on my table, to be willing to let go of whatever has them wound up,
and to open to new
possibilities of

therapists to get our clients to breathe more.
Our breath is the inner resource to our soul, through inspiration and
expiration. It is impossible to meditate without breath. It is impossible to
do anything without breath!
In my amazement of our humanness, I am guided by Spirit. Each time I
study in wonderment of our bodies, I am grateful for the opportunity. I
also realize that I love to learn and then apply the information into my life.

2011 House of Delegates

The volunteer seated House of Delegates
is structured to represent the opinions
of AMTA members. The delegates keep
the association strategically focused by
presenting bylaw changes for review by
the Board of Directors. It also votes on
proposed AMTA Position Statements that
reflect the AMTA’s stance on important
massage therapy issues. It is one of the
ways the AMTA is truly a membershipdriven organization.
Where do these proposed bylaw
changes and position statements come
from? They come from AMTA members.
Every year, any professional member has
the opportunity to bring forth changes
they think should happen to bylaws,
and public statements they believe the
AMTA should make. There is, of course,
a submission process that needs to take
place that includes research to back up
the suggested changes and position
statements, and deadlines that need to be
met. More information about this process
can be found on the national AMTA
website (www.amtamassage.org) in the
section “AMTA Position Statements.”
This year, there were six proposed
position statements and no bylaw
changes. They were presented to the
chapter’s membership for discussion, and
a vote to accept or reject, at the August
meeting in Prescott. The AZ Chapter
delegates, Steve Cody, Sandy Anderson,
Tee Wills and Patti Stanley, then took this
information with them when they
participated in the House of Delegates
held annually just before the national
convention. The House of Delegates was
an exciting and interesting experience.
A total of 138 delegates, representatives
from each of the chapters, discussed the
position statements, and then voted to
accept or reject them. The voting is
weighted by the number of members in
each chapter.
The position statements were:
Position Statement #1
It is the position of the American Massage
Therapy Association (AMTA) that
massage therapy can be effective in
reducing the symptoms of depression. This
was passed.
Position Statement #2
It is the position of the American Massage
Therapy Association (AMTA) that
massage therapy can be effective therapy
for those who suffer from tension headaches. This was passed.
Position Statement #3
It is the position of the American Massage
Therapy Association (AMTA) that those
who participate in exercise programs, as
well as athletes in training can benefit
from massage therapy.
This was passed.
Position Statement #4
It is the position of the American Massage
Therapy Association (AMTA) that
massage therapy can be effective in
reducing anxiety and its symptoms.
This failed to pass.
Position Statement #5
It is the position of the American Massage
Therapy Association (AMTA) that
massage can be effective in managing
signs and symptoms of fibromyalgia
syndrome. This failed to pass.
Position Statement #6
It is the position of the American Massage
Therapy Association (AMTA) that there
should be fair and consistent licensing of
massage therapy in all states that can lead
to portability of practice. This failed to
pass.
