Marion Days is clearly one of of the most action packed community festivals in the area, with good reason - It’s FUN!! Opening Thursday evening with a free hot dog roast and music in Veterans Memorial Park, this year’s festiMAILING LABEL val slowly began building steam. Friday saw cars, trucks and bikes cruise down main street with a fire mans water battle as well as area yard sales. Super-fest Saturday is the best way to describe the biggest day of the festival. Activities got underway bright and early with over 60 entries taking part in the 5k run walk. It was a clearly a Saturday in the park to remember. In and around downtown street vendors, sidewalk and yard sales kept shoppers busy as they listened to the music of Steve D ‘s one-man band. Kid’s enjoyed pony rides, face painting, games, a greased pig competition and more throughout the day and early evening. The Marion Historical Society was also active at their annual open house. The highlight of the day was without a doubt the ever-popular grand parade. Led by 2015 Grand Marshalls Arlene and Dick Swiler. Former members of the Marion based “Team Highland” Arctic Cat Enduro snowmobile race team of the 1970’s and 80’s The couple has been very active in the community over the years. In 1992 they were inducted into The Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame with “Team Highland” Temperatures in the upper 80’s and bright sunny skies greeted parade goers young and old who gathered to see brightly colored entries come down the street. For youngsters the parade provided a great opportunity restock their dwindling summer candy supplies thanks to the many floats that threw candy. To many people seeing the lights of approaching fire truck is sad it means the parade is just about over, in Marion it means the fun is about to begin! As the rear of parade approached a fire fighter launched a blast of water skyward from his truck as kids and adults gather behind to grab a cool shower. Any sadness concerning the parades Continued on Page 2 else to do.” Consumers Energy reported 36,000 customers were left without power across northern Michigan. As of Wednesday late afternoon, the number stood at 17,000. Leelanau, Grand Traverse and Ogemaw counties were hit the hardest and were told not to expect power restora- tion until Thursday. The utility company had more than 800 employees and contractors involved in storm restoration efforts. American Red Cross and Salvation Army had set up shelters in the hardest hit areas. Some 28 warnings were issued Sunday throughout northern and western areas of the state. The largest hail reported was 4.25 inches, or the size of a softball, seven miles north of West Branch around 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids. Thousands of downed trees and power lines were caused by up to 80 mile per hour straight-line winds accompanied by the severe thunderstorm. She›d rather be in the village than in the open space of her former home, especially when she heard rural residents who lost electrical power also lost access to drinking water. “I love having city water.” Felicity Warren was without power and water at her 20 Mile Road residence. She was relieved power was restored by Monday because word was it wouldn›t be until Wednesday before restoration was expected. While no one broke the Marion Days Record of 11’ 9” set in 2011 by Air Jordan and Curtis Clous there were a lot of great contestants. This year’s champion, with a jump of 9’ 8”, was ‘Looky’ wrangled in by Bailey Bear. Second place was ‘Hopper’ trained by Brenden Grady with a jump of 9’ 7”. For those that haven’t kept up with the world news, Cecil, a collared, star attraction at the Hwange Game Preserve in Zimbabwe, was lured from his protective habitat and killed with a crossbow by a big game hunting dentist from Minnesota. Of course the outrage was immediate and worldwide. The dentist, now fighting extradition to Zimbabwe, closed his dental practice and went in to hiding, such was the rage against the tooth puller. Thankfully the Zimbabwe government banned lion hunting after this incident. The decline of the lion has been well-documented with only 25,000 left in southern Africa. Closer to home this columnist broke a story about a Harrison man who decided to get revenge for a car repair that was taking too long in his mind, so he set the wife’s five kittens on fire, burning them until nothing was left but there skeletons. An older cat was also found on a fence line with his neck snapped in to. Richard Bancroft, well known in Harrison, as a strange, mentally challenged, sometimes violent individual was jailed by police for allegedly murdering the cats. Having known this individual for a few years, I would say it was only a matter of time before his anger got the best of him. I only thank God, it was kittens, and not human beings, he allegedly murdered. Many of us contend the government needs to overhaul how it deals with the mentally ill. Bancroft is certainly a poster child as to why. Again the outrage on social media and in the Harrison community has been deafening. Pets are like children to many of us, and to have them meet such a violent death gets our blood curdling. Just this week another incident was reported in Harrison. Although details are sketchy at this writing, a man drove his truck from Leota to M-61 in Harrison with a dog tied to it. When he finally stopped the dog was dead. People say a trail of blood could be seen on Old State Road. I say details are sketchy because we aren’t sure whether the man knew that dog was tied to his truck or not. The incident is under investigation. As soon as we know we will post, but if the dog was dragged intentionally, the man ought to face some severe animal cruelty charges. I do know, believe it or not, that is has become somewhat of a fad, lately for some idiots to commit this act of cruelty. Google it and Reflections By Roger Campbell Ministries Plunge into Life What you do is important. How you do it may be even more important. Wise Solomon wrote: “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). Paul added: “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men” (Colossians 3:23). Jesus was the greatest example of one who gave Himself completely to every task. Wherever He went the mundane was made miraculous. Everyday contacts were seen as divine opportunities. Common sights became teaching tools: the sower, the fig tree, the vine and the branches. He gave His best to every situation. Traveling through Samaria, He met a troubled woman beside a well. Though He was tired, thirsty and hungry, He immediately addressed Himself to her need. To the amazement of His disciples, He was willing to neither rest nor eat until He had ministered to her and to her many friends who came out from the city to hear and believe. Compassion so directed His life that He always had time for hurting people. He looked at lepers, the blind and the poor and felt what they were feeling. Too often, we just look. Follow Him into the Garden of Gethsemane. Witness His agony as He prays so fervently that His sweat falls like drops of blood from His brow. Understand that this moving scene measures the intensity of His life and purpose. Place Him on a cross. Pound nails through His hands and feet. Crown Him with thorns. Hear the crowd mock Him. Watch while Roman soldiers gamble for His garments beneath the cross. By now you will have concluded that there is nothing more He can give, but if you listen carefully you will hear Him guarantee Paradise to a dying thief. He made the most of every moment. He lived and died with all His heart. With such an example, it is not surprising to find the New Testament writers calling for fervency in the Christian life. Paul begged Christians in Rome to be fervent in business dealings. Peter asked his readers to be fervent in their love for one another. James called for fervent praying. And those early Christians were fervent! Churches exist around the world today because they didn’t hold back…even though it cost many of them their lives. The Livonia-based Cirque Amongus added a bit of circus fun to the fair. Alicia Frost, 12, of Farwell balanced herself on a rolling globe, helped momentarily by her grandmother, Cheryl Richmond of Surrey Township. Cheryl teaches second grade in Evart. Family members together visit the fair every year, Cheryl said. Her mother, Jackie Anderson of Evart Township, originally from Clare County, began the tradition. Jackie was busy photographing the grandchildren riding a pedal contraption at the same time. Cirque Amongus passes on the fundamentals of circus arts to schools, libraries and special events. Summer camps offer hands-on programs. Mixed among the planned activities at the fair was a demonstration of sorts led by Osceola County Sheriff›s deputy Jed Avery, handler of the department›s K-9 unit named Ryker. Avery brought the friendly five-month-old Dutch Shepherd to mingle among fair fans like Emily Bongard and her family from Elder›s Dairy Beef Farms of Evart. Avery wants the animal to become accustomed to being around groups of people, because sometime in the animal›s future there will be visits to nursing homes and schools. In October the canine unit will be certified for tracking and as a bomb dog. The sheriff›s department is accepting donations to go toward dog food, equipment and training supplies for Ryker. Ryker has replaced “Bary,” the K9 that was put in retirement. “Bary has the good life after working the road eight years,” added Avery, who still handles Bary but now as his pet. Stutzman Metal Roofing & Feed and Farm Supply For prize winning livestock come to Stutzman’s and save on all feeds! 4-Her’s 50¢ off any type of feed Clip and Save By Rosemary Horvath Correspondent Ryan Jones of Reed City pulled and tugged at the taller and heavier beef heifer with all his 70-pound might. Pushed from behind by two men, the 700-pound or so “Star” wasn’t willing to budge readily or easily during the youth and open class dairy judging at the Osceola 4-H & FFA Fair last week. Ryan took it in stride. He was showing three different heifers that day and, as any 4H member knows, getting riled up over animal behavior doesn’t pay in the long run. Scores of youth from Osceola County and parts of Mecosta County participated in the 140th annual event. Swine, goats, rabbits, llamas and alpacas, horses and poultry filled stables while assorted crafts and specialty handiwork adorned shelves of exhibit halls. The colorful midway of amusement rides and plenty of eats satisfied spectators. Dairy Boosters put on a free lunch spread for dairy families and 4-H kids. Rose Steig of Hersey was busy handing out free cartons of Prairie Farms white and chocolate milk to promote the dairy industry. A grant of $1500 from Michigan Milk Producers provided 6,600 milk cartons for the event this year. Aside from displays of wearing apparel, ceramics, photography, mechanics and so much more, space was set aside for anyone interested in a brief respite, thanks to the Osceola League for Arts & Humanities whose retail studio is in downtown Evart. Dorothy Elliott of Evart watched over assorted magazines, newspapers and refreshments to choose from. Comfortable chairs and a cooling fan created a smoothing space. “The fans help,” said the OLAH member. “Every year this is a place to sit and read a magazine. It’s a nice break.” Across the way, OLAH member Bonnie Neuman of Hartwick Township drew in kids and adults to hear The Story of Loons. She recruited young friends Gracie Ward of Evart to dress in a loon costume and Ali Sanford of Stanwood to wear the Happy Coat for Japan to aid with her storytelling. Both girls were showing animals at the fair. Bonnie once taught art classes in Evart and was a substitute teacher in Marion. “Loons can’t live in Michigan in the winter because Coupon must be present Reuben Stutzman 9736 Tobacco Drive, Clare 1-989-386-3013 Barbs Creekside Salon Sheriff’s deputy Jed Avery introduces K9 unit Ryker to Emily Bongard and her children at the Osceola Fair.
