Genuine hugs and encouragement are passed out to new graduates from the seasoned ones - who have been there, done that, had that happen and survived. And like any other family reunion, wonderful food is dished up, prepared and served by Carla and Derry McGuire of Iowa, along with the help of attending family and friends. With this exceptional gift, KSDS gazed into the future, contemplating their hopes and dreams, so what better names to give the puppies than Hope and Dream. Both puppies are now living with their puppy raisers, Letha & Larry Nelson and Leroy & Kim Kimminau. What will the future hold for these dogs? What will their futures bring to KSDS? The litter of Labrador Retreivers were named after various Cadillac vehicles and went to their puppy raiser homes May 6th. Watch for KSDS pups at the various Cadillac Club of Kansas City events! Sturgis on the River, Davenport, IA Wind, Rain, and Hail will not deter Iowa and Illinois Puppy Raisers This year’s Sturgis on the River was hot as usual and also plagued with wind and rain on two of the three days. Lisa Rickards and DeAnna Wiggett came from Kansas to help out our little Triple I group and ended up drenched. Both dogs and people were covered in mud but everyone kept a smile and had a lot of laughs! On the second day we lost our shelter to high winds but never lost sight of our goal of spreading the word about KSDS. With a spare canopy to shade the pups and us, we made it through the final day. We managed to visit with a lot of folks and hopefully gained a new puppy raiser or two as well as letting others know about the great work at KSDS. KSDS, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to the training and placement of assistance dogs for individuals with disabilities. KSDS, Inc. is proud to be a fully accredited program by Assistance Dogs International, Inc. For more information visit www.assistancedogsinternational.org. John Barbee Natalie Banks John states he’s blind in one eye and can’t see out of the other but his lack of sight and hearing does not interfere with his “vision” of life. His new dog and partner, Viper, is going to help him face the unknown. As his sight digresses John desires to maintain the level of independence he has and be able to go more places on his own. He wants to safely access local shopping and attend board meetings. Natalie returned to KSDS to get her successor dog, Kringle. Even though there is only one original staff member left, Natalie still liked the way things were done. The individualized training is what she liked the most. Her training has been very positive. KSDS works as a team to get the job done. The instructor adjusted the training to meet her needs and physical condition. Natalie is amazed with herself at what she was able to accomplish and how much farther she could walk. Other reasons she choose KSDS was that it is an ADI member, close to her home and Washington itself is a very nice town. Viper - guide 1 2 3 4 John, a semi-retired consultant, has lived in Glenwood Springs, CO, for the last 15 years. It is a diverse, relatively accessible city of 7000, where lots of recreational activities like hiking, rafting, fishing and tourism take place. John says it has been a real pleasure to get to know everyone at KSDS. Its excellent training is highly individualized. Everyone is recognized as active participants, even his wife, Nancy, was integrated in. The support is wonderful. There’s pride, professionalism and participation. Bonding with his partner, Viper (from the Snake litter and raised by Tracy Johnson of New Jersey) has given John a higher level of independence with less fear and anguish. John says it’s a very good match. As a team we are hopeful, open minded and intend to be actively involved. KSDS came recommended to him, and it compared very favorably with other schools. What intrigued John the most was that this service was offered at no cost even in these economic times! Kringle - Guide Natalie recently moved to Mission, KS, and is looking forward to getting out and about by herself, volunteering and possibly finding employment this fall. Mission is an animal friendly place, the cost of living is reasonable and accessible to Kansas City. There will be museums, shopping malls and the Plaza to visit. With Kringle’s help, Natalie is looking forward to overcoming lots of challenges to become more independent, such as not getting knocked over or running into things, or having to wait for someone to help her get somewhere...not to mention the companionship and respect Kringle will bring to her. Having Diabetic Retinopathy is challenging but Kringle’s going to help Natalie conquer many issues. She’s looking forward to getting back home, getting closer to Kringle and getting their routines down. Shopping will come in time. As a team, Natalie says she and Kringle are very compatible; he’s come to know me so well already. Kringle is from the Christmas Litter and his puppy raiser was Carla McGuire of Iowa. Puppy Blankets (37”x37”) (Continued from Front Page) Julie Maloukis understands the work and commitment it takes to have that great teamwork with your canine partner. As one of the moderators of the KSDS Graduate Yahoo Support Group, Julie is familiar with the challenges faced by both first time partners and successor partners. The Yahoo Support Group is where KSDS graduates can come together on-line and ask questions, share stories and give support to other KSDS Graduate teams. “I only wish I would have had access to such support during my first year with my first service dog,” says Julie. “I was really out there on my own, several states away from any of the few KSDS people I knew during that time….if only I would have had all of you KSDS Wish List Paper Towels Their Story... past! She says she was beginning to feel good about her partnership with her dog, Achmed, but still nervous about going back. Julie was afraid she would somehow prove to be a disappointment or worse. During retreat, Julie’s fears were relieved as she worked through her challenges with her instructor, shared stories and suggestions and received the support of new friends. “I went home from Graduate Retreat with a lot more confidence in working with my dog. And things began to really get better,” smiled Julie. This year was Julie’s 4th Grad retreat. “It’s kind of like going home for Christmas ought to feel. We are excited about this major milestone and want you to share in our celebration. Puppy raisers and graduates in the Kansas City area have been spending their weekends at the Americana Festival at Worlds of Fun spreading the word about all the good work KSDS is doing. This event was in partnership with the Cadillac Club of Kansas City which is hosting a car show helping to draw attention to KSDS. Each weekend there are presentations as well as lots of one on one connections with the public. The dogs get many great socialization opportunities as well! You help make it possible to promote independence and inclusion of individuals with disabilities through canine assistance. We are working on a digital scrapbook of the past 20 years. If you have photos you are willing to share of memories associated with KSDS and its mission being fulfilled we would love to use them. Do you have photos of special events? Groundbreakings? Fundraisers? Socials? Do you have photos of places you’ve gone or people you’ve met with your dog? We are looking for it all and more. We’re sorry, but printed photos cannot be returned. Deadline for photos is October 31, 2009. Today I said goodbye to my working partner of seven years. Tonight I will remember how Doc gave me a reason to get up in the morning when my mom had cancer. Tonight I will remember how Doc barked and howled with joy each time we returned to KSDS. Tonight I will remember how Doc would give me a look that said “I am here. I love you.” every time I was unsure of myself. Tonight I will remember how Doc “danced” every time he got a rawhide chew. Tonight I will remember how Doc used to snore while I was in class and the whole class would laugh. Tonight I will remember Doc’s smile. Tonight I will remember Doc’s dork ears. Today as Doc closed his eyes to our world, I whispered in his ear “I love you. Run, run and don’t look back!!” And then he was gone... All of us were touched one day when we received a handwritten letter from a group of very young KSDS supporters. These kids were introduced to KSDS through a puppy raiser teacher who took the time to teach the children at her school about individuals with disabilities and the positive effects canine assistance can have on their quality of life. many other young people give of their time, resources and money to help fulfill the mission of KSDS, Inc.
