A brief review of Board activity during the 2009-2010 school year will also be presented. Each year, as required by Article 8.4 of the Timothy Christian Society Bylaws, a formal report of the actions undertaken by the Board of Directors is prepared and presented to the Timothy Christian Schools Society at the Annual Meeting. It is impossible, however, for a written report to convey the strength of the Timothy Society, the depth of parental, faculty and staff commitment, or the spirit that permeates Timothy. A formal Board report cannot adequately provide insight into God’s work in the lives of our children—a work begun in the home and the church and continued through the educational and nurturing (continued on next page) 2009-2010 2009-2010 Annual Report Annual Report 1 Introduction cont. process at Timothy Christian Schools. As parents, friends, supporters, and members of the Timothy Society, you should be aware that this Board and each of its committees have faithfully prayed for your children. They have prayed that its actions as a Board would be wise and conform to God’s will for this institution. You should also know that the administration and faculty of Timothy care deeply for your children and grandchildren and desire to be God’s instrument in molding and shaping them to conform to his plan for their lives. The way the facilities and grounds are cared for, the way the busses are operated, and the support that the clerical and administrative staff provides also reflect a commitment to giving the best that we are capable of giving to God’s kingdom work at Timothy. As you read this report, we hope that you will thank God for what he is doing at Timothy and recommit to its support through prayer and service. Annual Report 2009-2010 Annual Report to the Society 2009-2010 2009-2010 Annual Report Board of Directors The Officers of the Board of Directors comprise the Executive Committee which provides leadership to the Board and periodically takes action on behalf of the full Board, as described in the Constitution and Bylaws. This year the Executive committee focused on preparing for transition. We have found there are many, many details, small and large, that are involved with a change in leadership. We had to look at everything, from assembling a search committee to reviewing job descriptions. The significance of this transition forced us to temporarily refocus our priorities. We had to put a hold on some long-term goals, so that they could be looked at with the fresh eyes of the new superintendent. We discussed ways to make the transition smooth for all concerned and implemented many of these ideas. In addition, the committee provides oversight of the work of other committees and administrative leaders, serves to listen and respond to concerns of staff and parents, and works to improve Timothy’s effectiveness in educating, growing and caring for the children who attend. Most importantly, as with all committees and Board Members, we serve to prayerfully support Timothy’s mission within our community. Bob Van Staalduinen, Chair Annual Report 2009-2010 Admissions Committee The Admissions Committee has the rewarding opportunity to meet with new parents interested in sending their children to Timothy Christian Schools. The Admissions Committee interviews each family with the primary purpose of establishing that the parents have a commitment to and relationship with Jesus Christ. Within the interview, the Admissions Committee also determines if a desire for Christian education is a primary reason for seeking enrollment at Timothy. The committee members also verify that the new family has an active church membership. Verification of all Timothy families’ church membership takes place every other year. stories of how they became familiar with Timothy Christian Schools. The committee members are honored to serve in this important area and do so with integrity to adhere to Timothy Christian’s Admissions policy and Mission Statement. Finally, when new Timothy families make the transition from the application process to completing their first year in the Timothy community, it can sometimes be difficult for them to make immediate connections. To that end, we are beginning to develop a welcoming committee that will help this transition. Luis Hernandez, Chair The Admissions Committee has been blessed and encouraged by listening to parent testimonies and 2009-2010 Annual Report Building and Transportation Committee The Building and Transportation committee meets monthly to review the status of our campus facilities and busing systems. Our primary purpose is to support and oversee Timothy’s full time Facility Manager and Director of Transportation. Long term capital needs are also evaluated including the purchase of new busses and building and property upgrades. Recommended investments are presented to our finance committee for budgeting and final acceptance by the full board. Our key focus for this school year was to improve the safety and security of our campus. Using funding provided by the The State of Illinois School Safety Annual Report 2009-2010 Block Grant, we invested in a number of systems designed to enhance our campus security. We purchased a campus wide facility lock down system which automatically locks every door on the campus during school hours preventing the entry of visitors. This system also tracks the entry and exit of each approved staff member using a card swipe system. All visitors are required to enter and sign in at three main entrances. Additional camera systems where added to allow us to easily identify visitors at the two primary entrances for our facilities. Our electronic clock system was also updated to ensure that every clock throughout our facilities is exactly the same. As we conclude another successful school year, our committee would like to commend the outstanding performance of Timothy’s facility and transportation teams led by Don Lipp and Joe Bathje. Donor Relations Committee The mandate of the Donor Relations Committee is “to advise the Timothy Board and administration and develop appropriate policies relating to all fundraising activities, including the Annual Timothy Fund Drive, and planned giving on behalf of the Timothy Foundation, capital campaigns for campus expansion or program enhancement, and other project-oriented efforts. Much of the effort of the committee this past year, in light of the economic downturn, has been to work closely with the Executive Committee of the Board to determine the appropriate course and action related to the Master Capital Campaign. While the broad focus of the Campaign was put aside, specific building enhancements have been identified as crucial, and steps are now underway to determine and solicit funds for these essential infrastructure needs. Efforts to more clearly communicate those needs are now underway. The committee also oversees the activities related to the Annual Timothy Fund Drive, the activities of the Alumni Director, and scholarship recipient selection. The Donor Relations Committee provides oversight and encouragement to the boards of PIE and the New to You Resale Store. It is with gratitude that the committee recognizes the volunteerism and community spirit promoted by these groups, in addition to the essential financial contributions, which are made year after year. We are blessed to have such a core of committed volunteers to help in fundraising activities! Overall, we appreciate the generosity of the Timothy society, which has demonstrated extreme generosity in the past, and we look forward to its future commitment as plans are continually being made to provide excellence in education and facilities. Jake Groenewold, Chair 2009-2010 Annual Report Education Committee The Education Committee’s purpose is to “…establish principles of instruction and curriculum.” Our committee strives to support our schools in reviewing general conditions of employment, investigating and interpreting the school’s curriculum, keeping informed as to the quality and Christian character of the instruction, dealing with matters of educational policy or curriculum, and reviewing the educational performance of the schools. and needs of Timothy Christian Schools. • I nvestigate the feasibility of offering foreign languages not presently offered in our curriculum through independent study courses on the internet or other distance learning formats. In addition members of the committee take part in all prospective teacher interviews. With more than 100 applications for some of our openings, it’s good to know we attract very strong candidates. Timothy Christian Schools Mission and Vision is…Serving God and His people, Timothy Christian The goals the Education committee assumed this Schools develops academically prepared Christian year were: disciples who embrace Christ’s call to transform the • I mplement and support the new AdvancEd world. The Education Committee has witnessed the District Accreditation model administrators, faculty, and staff embrace this mission • Evaluate current student assessment practices and and vision through their teaching and dedication to the students at Timothy. investigate other models to best support the goals Annual Report 2009-2010 Julie Huisman, Chair Extracurricular Committee Did you know the Timothy Christian School offers 50 extracurricular opportunities for our students in the high school and 30 extracurricular programs for our elementary and middle school students? It is this committee’s purpose to evaluate these programs and hire coaches/sponsors for these many offerings. Timothy is very committed to its extracurricular activities and extremely appreciative of the hard work and dedication of these many coaches/sponsors. These individuals not only coach, lead and teach but they are also spiritual mentors to our children helping them develop “excellence with Christ-like character” This past year this committee has completed writing the “Extra Curricular Charter” which gives specific direction to this 3 year old committee. We also have a sub-committee working on achievement recognition for our many sports teams and clubs. Another sub- committee continues to fine tune the parent and student surveys which are sent out at the end of each season. In all we do we strive to glorify God and encourage our students, coaches and sponsors to demonstrate excellence with Christ-like character! Nancy Van Dyke, Chair 2009-2010 Annual Report Finance Committee The finance committee is responsible for monitoring and managing the income and expenses of the school. The committee works closely with the administration and staff in developing and adjusting its plans and budgets to maintain a healthy financial position. Timothy will again finish the year in a sound fiscal financial position. This year Timothy’s enrollment has come in above budget and our staff has done a good job of keeping expenses in line with that budget. In an effort to streamline our tuition collection process we have utilized a third party called FACTS. The business office has benefited from this process with more consistent and timely receipts. This process has resulted in better cash management. 10 Annual Report 2009-2010 The business office has also undergone extensive work and analysis with regards to preparing for a financial audit. This has also included an examination and strengthening of our internal controls. Timothy continues to be blessed by its constituents who have donated financial resources and their valuable time. Timothy has also been blessed by solid administrative and staff leadership. The Lord has been FAITHFUL. Steve Loerop, Chair Marketing and Recruitment Committee The Marketing and Recruitment Committee’s mission statement is “to increase enrollment for Timothy Christian Schools and to promote the Timothy brand within our communities.” We work to fulfill this mission and find that it is very broad in concept that often has us thinking creatively. Some of the Committee’s highlights this year include the following: • We staged four very successful open houses in November, March, April, and May. Over 100 families were able to learn more about Timothy and its mission. • The cheerleaders, soccer team, committee members and a Timothy bus took part in the Elmhurst St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We met on a rainy March morning, thought briefly about canceling, but we went forward with the parade. The rain stopped long enough for our walk down Spring Road, where we were able to pass out not only candy but 100’s of bookmarks with upcoming Open House dates. • Over 20 pastors attended the February Pastor’s Breakfast. This was a worthwhile event in which we invited all the pastors from churches represented at Timothy. Administrators, board members, and pastors shared a breakfast. Then we attended the Middle School Chapel, which involved the visiting pastors. (continued on next page) 2009-2010 Annual Report 11 Marketing and Recruitment Committee cont. • The committee hosted High School Preview Day where 8th graders from Timothy and area middle schools spent the morning experiencing Timothy High School. This event not only showcases the high school “in action,” but also prepares the 8th graders for some of the differences from M.S. to H.S. • We are also completing work on exit surveys, new advertising venues, and tuition deposit/reenrollments procedures. We are looking forward to the 100-year anniversary and the benefits of the newly formed Welcome Committee for new families at Timothy. 12 Annual Report 2009-2010 The committee would like to recognize Rudi Gesch, Timothy’s Director of Marketing and Recruitment, and thank him for the conceptualizing the above highlights. Some grades are nearing capacity for 2010-11. Enrollment went up for the 2009-10 school year and hopes to maintain for 2010-11. Record Kindergarten triggered a slight increase in this year’s overall student population. With the likelihood of welcoming over 90 1st graders in the fall, we hope to maintain our solid numbers. Diana DeBoer, Marketing and Recruitment Committee Chair Technology Committee The Technology Committee is now in its third year, and retains its charter to ensure technology is used to enable the mission of Timothy. The work of the committee gains traction through working closely with the Technology Director, who does a fantastic job of keeping the vast array of technology used by Timothy running smoothly. God is blessing His world with rapid advances in technology, and the committee is focused on the opportunities this provides to both streamline and reduce costs as well as enable new capabilities and experiences for the administration, faculty and students. One large topic the committee has begun to address is the integration of data from the multiple disparate systems employed by the school. Currently, there are numerous independent systems, including those used for the business office, student grades, email communications, the libraries, FACTS, etc. Data sharing and consolidation, and planning the coordinated integration of new systems and capabilities is a major undertaking. There are many other topics being discussed by the committee: Server, desktop and laptop lifecycle replacement strategies, student email policies, an alumni database, backup strategies, and internet connection options offer a sample of what our agendas cover. I am always amazed with the depth of technical expertise and contribution brought by the committee members and our Technology Director. It has truly been a pleasure working with the Technology Committee this year. 2009-2010 Annual Report 13 Timothy Christian Schools Foundation: Funding the Future The Timothy Christian Schools Foundation was established with gifts for endowment as one way of participating in God’s design for faith in future generations. Since its inception through a bequest from the estate of “Aunt Tena” Huizenga, a Timothy constituent who had dedicated her life as a Christian missionary in Africa, the Foundation has provided a way for others to join in the opportunity to bless the future. From its beginnings with $28,000 in 1978, the Foundation today has over $4 million in invested assets. Since last year we are pleased to announce that the vast majority of our assets have been transferred to the Barnabas Foundation. There, along with sister institutions similarly invested, we look forward to expert and personal attention toward our future earnings goals. 14 Annual Report 2009-2010 Foundation assets are used for tuition and salary assistance, curricular and program development, scholarships, and special projects. Gifts to the Foundation through wills and bequests, gifts of real estate or the sale of business, or charitable trust arrangements, fund not only immediate needs and provide tuition assistance, but help to insure that Christian education remains affordable. This past year we were blessed to receive an estate gift of over $400,000 from “a friend of a friend” of Timothy. Praise God that “word of mouth” testimonials can positively impact even those who have not been directly involved with Timothy. Each candidate was asked, in preparation for this report, to respond to the following questions: 1. What motivates you to serve on the Timothy Christian Schools Board of Directors? 2. What strengths or areas of expertise will you bring to the Board? 3. Our mission calls for the development of academically prepared Christian disciples who are taught from a Reformed Christian perspective. What can a Board member do to make this happen? Their responses and brief biographical sketches are presented on the following pages. 20 Annual Report 2009-2010 Brian Bragg At Large: Chicago Church of Christ I believe that Christ’s love is best expressed and experienced through the fellowship of believers: acts of service and sacrifice, producing a wellspring of love that benefits the immediate community, and gives hope and inspiration to an outside world in desperate need of both. Serving on the school board is one way of expressing our gratitude for the many ways our son has benefited from the guidance, direction, and vision that he has received as a student for close to three years. I want to join with others in the work of building up the body, to the edification of the greater Timothy Christian Society. I have board service experience with local non-profit organizations focusing on the arts and public health, and have facilitated national workgroups involving public and private organizations and corporations. Marketing and communications, community engagement, and organizational development are strengths accrued through experience; a love of teamwork and laughter – gifts from God. A Board member can help maintain the mission by insuring that we continue the core practice of disciple making, while participating in the larger, dynamic discussion of what it means to be academically prepared in a present and future world where the term “academically prepared” is fluid. In addition, making sure that academic preparation itself continues to be a part of the Great Commission: to win the world for Christ. Though the faces of the Timothy Christian Society may look different than they did 100 years ago, the mission keeps the unity necessary for the future of the Society and it’s witness. The Board leads in the care of this mission. I was raised in the city and suburbs of Washington D.C., the oldest of four children. My extended family in the area numbered close to 70 people during my youth; the largest grouping of our clan, with two other large groups clustered in the New York area, and in the “family seat” of Franklinton, North Carolina. Though there were challenges growing up, what I mostly remember is lots of food, laughter, and love. I grew up attending church, was very active in our youth group, and was also very involved in the (continued on next page) 2009-2010 Annual Report 21 Board Nominees cont. Young Life club at my high school. However, it wasn’t until after I graduated college and came to Chicago to work that I realized, (through experiencing some particularly tough situations) that I had never made Jesus the Lord of my life, but had instead been a consistent follower of tradition and external expectations. In the midst of this turmoil, an incredible young woman invited me to a Bible study group, where I began my personal, intimate, sojourn with the Lord. I became a Christian in 1988. Two years later, by God’s grace and mercy, I married that incredible young woman, and today our son is in the 7th grade at Timothy Christian Middle School. God has put our boundary markers in a very pleasant place; we feel blessed to have been added to the Timothy Christian community. 22 Annual Report 2009-2010 Dave DeVries Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church My motivation for serving on the Timothy board begins with my commitment to my three children to help in providing them with superior education in a Christ centered atmosphere. I have also committed to support the children of our church in providing them with Christian teaching and education. There are very few things more important to me than my children and their development in a Christian setting. I believe that the strengths I bring to the Board include management and leadership. I have been extremely fortunate to be part of a business organization in which I have been able to lead teams of highly motivated professionals. A Board member’s primary responsibility is to provide Timothy teachers and administrators with the tools, direction and support necessary to do their jobs most effectively. Actively listening to the needs of the school faculty and the students is critical in developing a plan to make the mission a reality. I was born and raised in Brookfield, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee. After graduating from Calvin College, I married Julie (Zeilstra) and settled in Lombard. One of my daughters is an alum of Timothy, another will graduate this June, and my youngest daughter will be a sophomore next year. Luis Hernandez Willow Creek Community Church, South Barrington The thing that motivates me to serve on the Board at Timothy is that I want to get more involved in my children’s school since I have four currently attending. I also want to serve because I get an opportunity to make a difference, even if it is in a small way, in the lives of current and future students at Timothy. I have served for six years on the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. I feel a board member can contribute new ideas with the mission in mind and find ways to further help (continued on next page) 2009-2010 Annual Report 23 Board Nominees cont. increase opportunities for the students present and future. I have resided in Elmhurst for almost three years. I have been married to Laura Hernandez for 16 years. We have four children—Louie (13) and three daughters, Elizabeth (10), Gracie (8), and Joy (6)—all attending Timothy. I work in Lombard for 1st Advantage Mortgage as a Mortgage Planner CMPS and have been in the business for eight years. I graduated from Lewis University in 1985 with a bachelor of science degree and a minor in business administration. I was born in Mexico and came to this great country with my parents when I was four. 24 Annual Report 2009-2010 Tracey Jarzombek Lombard Christian Reformed Church I am excited and eager to serve Timothy Christian Schools on the Board of Directors. I ended my previous term on the Board two years ago and noticed during that time that I actually missed it! The Board is vital to the ongoing support of our adminstration, faculty, employees, and students. In my previous term, I appreciated serving on a variety of committees and saw firsthand how this school operates on the love and sweat of many. As a parent of three students currently in 6th, 4th, and 2nd and as an alumna, I have witnessed numerous changes and have been excited about the direction, services, and activites our school provides. I enjoy using my gifts in administration and leadership positions not only at school but also at church. Obviously, I have a vested interest in preparing our students to shine like stars for Christ. It is the same hope I have for my children as it is for all other parents who send their children to Timothy. Teaching them from a Reformed perspective allows our students to experience academia from a Christian worldview. This helps ground their Christian beliefs for when they are challenged in the “outside” world. Being open-minded about viable long range and short range plans for our institution is one way to further God’s kingdom work at our school and surrounding community. Ray Middel Faith Christian Reformed Church Scripture is full of references on the call of parents and the Christian community (Church, Home and School) to instruct their children in the wisdom and knowledge of God (Proverbs 1:7). As Christian parents, we are to prepare our children for a life of service to Christ in this world; wherever he calls them. Christian education rests on these three pillars of Home, Church and School, and I consider it a privilege to be involved in each of these areas to ensure that not only my children, but all covenant children have an opportunity to be instructed fully in the light of (continued on next page) 2009-2010 Annual Report 25 Board Nominees cont. God’s Word. Serving on the Timothy Board will allow me to utilize the gifts God has given to me, and further the Timothy mission of developing “Christian disciples,” by being a member of the board leadership that creates the framework to encourage Christian disciple making. We as a family moved to the western suburbs from Ontario, Canada, where I had the privilege to serve on the board of our local Christian school in Georgetown, ON. I enjoyed being involved in the leadership of a Christian school, and my passion for Christ centered education allowed me to also be an ambassador for Christ in this area. I am just finishing a term as Elder and VP of Council at Faith Christian Reformed Church, which provided me further leadership development of being in a church 26 Annual Report 2009-2010 leadership position. My current work responsibilities, challenges me in various leadership roles and responsibilities. A board member needs to have a clear biblical reference point and commitment to Christian education. We know the Bible is clear on our role as parents to instill the faith and knowledge of scripture into their hearts and minds so that they equipped to be disciples of Christ in His world (Deuteronomy 6:7). Since Timothy is founded on biblical principles as expressed in the reformed faith, one must have an ability to articulate a clear understanding of what it means to be reformed; and how this impacts the instruction and discipleship of our covenant children. Finally one must be passionate about the calling of being involved in Christ centered education. Christian education is both a privilege and opportunity and in a leadership role on the board, one must be an ambassador of both Timothy and Christian education, so that it will thrive and grow in our community, and we will continue to prepare Christian disciples to be actively involved in Christ’s kingdom. My wife, Susan and I have four children, who all attend Timothy. We are members of Faith Christian Reformed Church and actively involved. We moved to this area from Georgetown ON, in 2005, where we were actively involved in both our local church and Christian school. Mimi Stanton At Large: Epiphany Lutheran Church It’s hard to express how important Timothy is to our family. I know this school will have a life-long impact on our children. To be able to serve the school would mean a lot to me. Before being blessed with children, I was a PR professional at the Northern Trust Company, where I focused on business writing. I hope other facets of my PR background would benefit Timothy, too. During my career, I was called upon to work with every level of the corporation, which I felt was my strength. (continued on next page) 2009-2010 Annual Report 27 Board Nominees cont. I recognize our school’s mission is our greatest strength. I will be a good listener and make decisions based on whether the end result will support that mission. I grew up in Wisconsin, the daughter of Greek immigrants who loved their children unconditionally, had God at the center of the home and lived their lives with integrity. I graduated in 1988 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with BA in English. In 1989, I married my high school sweetheart, and ever since we have been blessed in so many ways but especially with our three children, Philip, Zoe and Harrison. For 10 years, I was a PR professional at The Northern Trust Company’s Chicago office, leaving in 1999 28 Annual Report 2009-2010 as a Second Vice President. Since then, I have been home raising our children and volunteering in the community. I have served as President of Tree Town Cooperative Nursery School, on the Board of the Elmhurst Historical Museum Foundation, as CoDirector of our church’s VBS program and as Asst. Superintendent of the Sunday School program. In 2005, we transferred our children to Timothy, but thought it couldn’t possibly be as wonderful as it seemed. Four years later, we continue to be amazed and grateful for the special influence Timothy has had on our entire family. Ken Vos Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church My motivation to serve on the Board is my reflection of the commitment we make each time a child is baptized in our congregation, namely to receive these children in love, pray for them, help instruct them in the faith, and encourage and sustain them in the fellowship of believers. Timothy Christian Schools is a significant part of our community commitment fulfilling the promise we make to God and parents. Serving on the Board allows me to use my time, talent and gifts to continue this commitment. Over my career, I have held management and leadership roles, both in Christian organizations as well as large corporations. This history provides the insight and experience to challenge, shape and embrace the vision of Timothy Christian Schools and provide consistent thought leadership to the administration responsible for carrying out the vision and goals. Board members support Timothy’s mission first by seeking God’s blessing and leadership over the School through prayer and reading His Word. Additionally, Board members must be committed to supporting a Christ-centered, Scripture supported curriculum and environment that challenges and molds children, faculty and administration as Disciples of Christ, preparing them academically and socially for the (continued on next page) 2009-2010 Annual Report 29 Board Nominees cont. challenges that the World presents. In essence, the Board can expect and must support that academic excellence and discipleship are not mutually exclusive and neither can be sacrificed in our school program. My wife, Cindy, and I are members of Elmhurst CRC where have both enjoyed being actively involved in various ministries and leadership roles. We are both graduates of Timothy Christian as well as our older daughters, Ashley and Brittany. Our youngest, Chad, will be entering his senior year this fall. I am a Director of Sales for Waste Management at the Midwest Group in Lombard. My personal hobbies include a new found enjoyment in hunting as well as spending hours in the bleachers watching TCHS basketball games. 30 Annual Report 2009-2010 Ballot Timothy Christian Schools Board of Directors, May 26, 2010 Please check yes or no for each candidate listed.
