Page 3 The Restoration Project Raffle The GVVCVC Restoration Project is nearing completion. This has proved to be a great project for club members with those involved learning new skills and resulting a very presentable vehicle. It is expected that the car will be completed in June after almost 2 years of stripping down, dent knocking, undercoating, finishing, painting and finishing again. The Triumph Dolomite will be raffled with tickets expected to be available at our July meeting at which it is also hoped that the vehicle will be on display. Official launch of the raffle will be at the Scouts Rally in the first week of August and the raffle will be drawn at the Club Christmas dinner in December. 5000 tickets at $5.00 each will be issued. Come to the July meeting prepared to take a book of tickets to sell. The car is raffled as is. There has been a full body restoration including seats and headlining, and brakes and steering have been overhauled. The drive train (engine, gearbox, and rear axle) has not been overhauled but is believed to be in good condition. Membership Report for May 2014-. Miscellaneous Ramblings Various items picked up by the Editor by listening out! • The Burra to Morgan run is on 11/12 October, organised by the Clare branch of the Northern Auto Restorers Club (NARC) • NARC 40th anniversary is August 9, 10 2014. No more details are available • • Monaro Nationals are being held in the Barossa Valley October 17-20 2014 Log Book and Historic Registration Issues from the Federation o If you change your address, a new log book must be issued o If you lose your log book and seek a replacement a new stat dec is required o The club must advise Department of Transport if a member becomes un-financial (eg through resignation or death) o Conditional Registration becomes null on the death of the registered owner. Such vehicles cannot be driven to the owners funeral unless on a day permit o If there are problems obtaining parts that impact on historic registration, then special dispensation from the Department of Transport through the Federation o Clubs are likely to be audited on their management of the Historic Registration scheme Long Ownership! Did you see the story in the Advertiser on Monday June 2nd about 100 year old Arthur Mullins in the 1908 Darracq which his family has owned since new. It raises the question of how many vehicles have been in family ownership for a long period of time. These are extremely rare in Europe where they become big news, but I now know of 3 in SA which have been in family ownership for over 100 years. Others are GVVCVC Member Bill Johnson’s 1909 BSA purchased new by his father, and the 1913 Newton Bennett owned by the Warnes family in Burra since 1914 (Currently displayed in the Birdwood Museum) GVVCVC Journal June 2014. Page 7 GVVCVC Journal June 2014. Page 8 Run Reports Run organisers are requested to nominate someone on the run to provide an article for the Journal, and also someone to report on the run to meetings (preferably a separate person for each). A report sheet is available to assist in reporting and is on the web site at http://gawlercarclub.com/pdfs/run_report_template.pdf . Reports should include some statistics on number of cars and people on the run plus information of a general nature. Photos of the run are earnestly sought by the Editor and the Webmaster. Due to the short period since the April edition was published and no input from participants there are only 2 run reports in this issue MYSTERY RUN Wednesday May 21st Bruce Williams 30 members attended this outing on a beaut day weatherwise . The first stop was at the home of Kym Kader {West Coast Imports}. A large collection of mainly american cars is on display and most are for sale. The group then drove on to Easy Orchids on Womma road. This is a wholesale orchid nursery. We had our BYO morning tea there and our host and owner Glenn Heylen explained the processes of Orchid production and successful production of quality Orchids. Lunch was at Grand Central home of the Central Districts Football Club where a good meal was provided at reasonable cost. After lunch we proceeded to the home of Bruce and Anne Williams at Hillbank where we enjoyed a relaxed afternoon tea and a lot of chat We all seemed to enjoy our day out and thanks to Trevor for his efforts on this day GORGE WILDLIFE PARK Sunday 25th May, 2014 Bob Carr Seventeen Club Members assembled at the Tafe Car Park, on an overcast morning. Leaving Gawler at 9.30am, we came across a few bicycle riders, participating in an organised run in and around the Barossa. Their numbers increased rapidly until we reached the Kersbrook turn off. We continued on to The Gorge Wildlife Park at Cuddlee Creek where we found a few members had taken a wrong turn, luckily they found their way back to the wildlife park unharmed. We all enjoyed the animals and birds, including nursing the koalas, patting the reptiles and viewing the numerous other animals and birds. All had a picnic lunch together and talk amongst ourselves with the day ending in sunshine for the drive home. A most enjoyable and relaxing day! GVVCVC Journal June 2014. Page 9 The TR7 ‘Our Little Red Rocket.’ By Trevor Bellchambers I have always had a soft spot for the TR7s as they are unique in design and an affordable sports car. There was a pair of them advertised in our Club Magazine so one day when I was heading out to the beach house at Webb Beach with Bruce Williams he suggested that we go via Windsor and check out the TR7s. Bruce decided that he was going to buy one and in a short time he was enjoying his new purchase. We talked about the TR7s a few times and Bruce suggested that I should buy the remaining car as his car was fun to drive and performed very well. The available TR7 was a 1980 car so I had to decide quickly to qualify for Club Registration which was soon changing from 1982 back to 1978. I sold off a few items from my ‘bits’ shed and raised the required funds. I paid a deposit to hold the car then paid the remainder as soon as I could and proudly trailered the TR7 home, had it inspected and Club registered. An ex-student called in one day before I had put the badges on the car and he was most impressed with what he thought was my Ferrari. With its 2 litre engine and 5 speed Rover gearbox (as factory fitted) the TR7s are quite quick and fun to drive. You sort of fall down into them but they are roomy inside. There is a factory conversion kit to fit and install the 3.5 litre V8 Rover engine (as in the TR8s) and you can create a very potent and exciting sports car. There are two TR7 V8s that race in the Targa Series and as Starting Marshall I see them leave the start... Wow! On reflection, a TR8 would be fun so I might suggest Lyn could get me one for Christmas. Ho! Ho! Ho! The Club BBQ The committee has been working hard on the design of the Club Barbeque. I think that this is what they have come up with! AUTOPRO GAWLER Sponsoring the Gawler Car Club Web Site www.gawlercarclub.com − See Gordon & his team at 80 Adelaide Rd Gawler for service and advice. By Alvin Jenkin Whilst on Holiday in Tasmania Sylvia and myself parked next to this combination in the Longford Caravan Park just south of Launceston. Initially it looks like a slightly modified MG TF towing a teardrop caravan. Of course this necessitated an earnest discussion with the owner. It turns out this is a fully electric car. The owner purchased the rolling chassis with the current body from Perth in WA without a motor or gearbox. The vehicle had been used in competition and had a full fibreglass body moulded using the original panels in order to reduce weight for competition use. This turned out to be perfect for Glenn to convert it to electric running. He fitted a DC motor in place of the gearbox and filled the entire under bonnet space with Lithium Batteries and the electrical control units. The AC Charger sits in the fuel tank area. The Caravan carries supplementary batteries for longer trips but are not essential for normal use. The car has 180 Amp Hour Capacity, and the Caravan 160 AH capacity. The motor output is 68Kw or about the equivalent of 90 BHP. A standard MG TF weighs 960Kg and this car weighs 930Kg, and handles very well according to Glenn. It has been fitted with an MGB front end with disc brakes. The most expensive part of the conversion was the controller which manages current to the motor. This is capable of handling 1000 amps and is water cooled, thus there is a small radiator behind the grille and a 12 volt electric pump to circulate the water. The system operates at 140volts, and a converter and has been installed to charge a small 12 volt battery to operate lights etc. The car has a range of up to about 150Km at 70Kph on a 9 hour charge. The car has participated in time trials, and is quicker over a standing ¼ mile than a well tuned standard car. It is the first fully electric car to have circumnavigated Australia. Its current home base is Mackay in Qld where Glenn is a member of two historic car clubs. Glenn says that there is an Edward Booth in Gawler who does similar things to cars. For details on how to build an electric car, go to www.evworks.com.au and to see more of Glenn’s story go to www.CO2Race.net.au .
