Albermarle Co. They were married in 1855 in Upshur Co, VA/WV. Bob’s
grandfather was Charles Casto born in Upshur Co, b. 1868 d. 1918.
Married 1st May Mitchell and 2nd Lucy Woods Walker. Lucy is Bob’s

What About a “Casto Resource Library”?
I recently had the thought of compiling a “Casto Resource Library”. I recently purchased an older, used copy of
“Roots and Branches of John Shafer and Hannah Casto” by Betty Lou Shafer Wardle (1984). Hannah Casto
Shafer (1824-1910) was the granddaughter of William Casto (1717-1778). I also have a copy of “Casto Cousins”
by Eileen Vickers (1983) and “Summary of the Casto Family” by Richard H. Provance. I’d be happy to look up
families in these books for anyone interested and was thinking maybe some other Casto researchers would like to
add their resources to our list and volunteer to do look-ups on occasion, too. Contact me if you’re either looking for
a certain book or resource or if you’d like to help with this project.

What I attempted to do here was show how each family changed from census to census. I put the figures for 1850 in red, 1860 is blue, 1870 is green, 1880 is black and 1900 is pink. The children
who appeared match the color of the year. The parent’s ages are shown in color, also, and in the case of more than one marriage, I tried to align the ages with the new wife. I expect there will be
several corrections or changes to be made to this chart but I’m hoping it helps out some Casto researchers, too, who may not have seen all these census’. I tried to show the spelling, as it appeared
on some of the census – boy, could they misspell! – but I also tried to put the maiden names next to the wives where I knew it. Send me your thoughts on what you think of this chart!
