MARCH 1976 (Spring) ME LHAgA BULLETIN COMBINED SPECIALTY CLUBS OF LOUISVILLE FEBRUARY 21 1976 AMERICAN BEST OF BREED LHASA APSO CLUB BOOTH PHOTO Am. & Can. CH. Pota la Keke's Yum Yum ROM Best of Breed: Eastern ALAC Specialty Breeder-Owner: Keke Blumberg PUBLISHED BY THE AMERICAN LHASA APSO CLUB 1976 EASTERN ALAC SPECIALTY The American Lhasa Apso Club held its first independent specialty show Saturday, February 21, 1976 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The show facilities were excellent. With more than four acres of clean, heated and well-lighted space available, grooming room was abundant and the ring was forty by sixty feet. The entry was 101 (34 dogs, 44 bitches, 2 veteran dogs, 2 veteran bitches, 17 best of breed competition, 2 stud dogs, 2 brood bitches, and 6 entered in junior showmanship). There were only 6 absentees. The overall quality of the Lhasa Apsos was outstanding. There was a great depth of merit in the open classes as well as in the puppy classes and among the bred by exhibitor entries. It is quite obvious that many of the dogs exhibited at this show will go on to complete their championships. Superb conditioning and exhibitor presentation of the entries made decisions even more challenging. Winners Dog, Rin Po Che III, owned by Dorothy O'Connor of Branchville, New Jersey, came from the open class as did the Reserve Winners Dog, Chiz An Ko-Khyi, owned by G. E. and Barbara Paisley of Columbia, Maryland. Winners Bitch, Talisman Ah-Chu, owned by Mrs. Betty Boshart, of Keokuk, Iowa, and Reserve Winners Bitch, Lamplite's Su Mi, owned by Correl L. Lamping of Waukesha, Illinois, also came from the open class. From an exceptionally outstanding class of specials the bitch, Ch. Potala Keke's Yum Yum, owned by Keke Blumberg of Rydal, Pennsylvania, was selected as Best of Breed and thus became the first Best-in-Show winner of an independent national Lhasa Apso Specialty. This seven year old bitch moved faultlessly in the ring. Her balance and soundness complement her typiness. The Best of Opposite Sex went to Ch. La Ta's Dus Ten Wun of Larry and Reta Schaap of Park Forest, Illinois. This young male, not yet two years old, is an outstanding specimen of the breed. His typiness and balance give promise of a great special's career. R'efiete f, Setade 1976 EASTERN ALAC SPECIALTY Best of Breed - CH. The Eastern and Western Specialties hosted by Louisville and Dallas enthusiasts were exciting events with many people from all parts of the mainland as well as Hawaii were present to show their interest in the Lhasa Apso. It takes a great effort to attend our National events and my appreciation for the effort to travel as well as the effort to host the events cannot be over-emphasized. Your interest and dedication to the Breed will prove to be the basic ingredients for the preservation of the Lhasa Apso. Now that our adult dog events are behind us we can concentrate on the young, future breed improvers by attending our three National Futurities. The Futurities give us a glimpse of the future as well as an evaluation of our breeding programs. I am sure they will be as successful and enjoyable as our recent National Specialties. Best wishes and continued success for this memorable year and may you have many many more. itOm4 4,qemeee MID-WEST FUTURITY Hosted By etitueloinoct Utma ()Ipso Oub May 30, 1976 In Conjunction With Cincinnati Kennel Club Convention Center Cincinnati, Ohio JUDGE: Marianne Nixon For Information Contact: Jacquline M. Campaigned from June '75, Piperman has won many Firsts, culminating in his triumphant progress to Best Dog and Best of Breed at Darlington and Ladies Kennel Association Championship Shows, finishing in grand style by going Best in Show at the Lhasa Apso Club Specialty from 108 entries on 18 October. Judge Doreen Richardson (Belazeith Lhasas) reported on him thus: "Lovely gold in full bloom, flowing in a correct texture coat that swept the ground. Good body, strong quarters, moving with plenty of drive. Carrying himself with pride as if he owned the ring. Nice level topline even on the move, nice head and eye, shown and put down to perfection." Proudly presented by his owner-handler: Mrs. Anne Matthews Hardacre Ellens Green, Rudgwick Horsham, Sussex, U.K. A.L.A.C. Fourth Annual Awards Dinner The American Lahsa Apso Club held their Fourth Annual Awards Dinner at the Cattleman East, in New York City, February 8, 1976. Raena Wilks, Vice President of the Lhasa Apso Club of Greater New York, chaired this event for her fourth successful year. L.A.C.O.G.N.Y. hosted for their second sucessful year, making quite sure all "tails were wagging" in the traditional Lhasa Style. David Goldfarb was the moderator of the forum on Genetics. Participants were: Barry Thompkins, Robert Sharp, Phyllis Marcy, Cathy Marley and Ed Sledzik. Stimulating, thought-provoking as well as general and specific information, was imparted on the group. An important fact brought out was novices should talk to experienced breeders regarding breeding and in-breeding. Much more was discussed and is available on tape. Contact David Goldfarb. Steve Campbell, awards chairman, was aptly assisted by Barbara Woods, Fred Terman and Ricky Siegel. Steve and his group presented the proud winners their individual awards in a true Parade of Champions. Although it may have looked "fixed", Elaine Fisher (Elaine sold many of the tickets) managed to win the Bovarian Wine Bowl. To all those people she promised would win, you'll have to catch Elaine next year! Our week-end reporter did notice true old fashion reunions as the miles of Lhasas were brought together for a "Very Special Lhasa Weekend". Topic of discussion, Lhasa Apsos, size, shape, health, and I-o-v-e! May the joyous memories of the fourth year be spread over the year to the fifth with many more new Lhasa People. See you all on the Fifth Event! SameCy Veliar) netIle &Made 12 AMERICAN LHASA APSO CLUB, INC. Finco 1. Inheritance Studies Past - From 1 affected male and 1 female, and their progeny, a total of 11 pups were whelped and raised. Eleven dogs are in the colony at present. Of the 11 pups 2 of 5 thoroughly studied had renal disease-6 pups are too young for final tests. Future - Breeding experiments will continue if funding allows. Affected X, affected matings, affected X related normal Lhasas, and affected X non Lhasa matings are planned. 2. Blood Pressure Measurements Past - Measurements have been made using both indirect and direct techniques, of blood pressure in all Lhasas in the colony at intervals during their lives. Future - Continuation of the above studies. 3. Serum Calcium Studies Past - Some serum calcium determinations on Lhasas have been marginally elevated. Future - Serum calcium determinations will be done at 3, 6, 12, and 20 weeks, on all pups. 4. Tissue Studies Past - Kidney tissue from cases of advanced disease have been examined from all parts of the country. - Kidneys obtained at surgery have been examined. - Kidney obtained at autopsy (2 dogs) have been compared. Future - Continuation of the tissue studies. 5. Nephron dissections, study of kidney blood vessels. Past - none Future - Will be done if funding allows. Should help in understanding the cause of the disease. 35 RENAL DISEASE IN LHASA APSOS Much concern exists among breeders and owners concerning renal disease in Lhasa Apsos. The following questions seem to surface in discussions about this problem. 1. Do all Lhasas with renal disease have the same type? 2. What causes the renal disease observed in young Lhasas? 3. How can renal disease be identified early in affected dogs? 4. What is a logical way to eliminate the problem? Unfortunately, complete answers are not available for these questions. In the subsequent discussion, the answers that I am providing will in some instances represent fact, and in other instances represent opinion. I will make it a point to identify each as I proceed. I ask that you also do so. 1. Do all Lhasas with renal disease have the same type? It is highly unlikely that all Lhasas with renal disease have the same type of disease. Multiple causes of renal disease are known to exist in other breeds, and there is no reason to believe that Lhasas are resistant to the causes that have been identified. However, renal disease in Lhasas Apsos is more commonly observed in young dogs. This leads one to speculate about developmental or metabolic defects rather than some of the causes identified for renal disease in other breeds. Insufficient study has been done on the problem in young Lhasas to know whether one or several diseases are present. 2. What causes the renal disease in young Lhasa Apsos. If the answer to this question were known, most of our problems with the disease would probably be resolved. The fact is that we simply don't know. Evidence supporting certain theories has been collected, but it is not strong enough to allow sweeping statements. It is also important to appreciate that "cause of disease" can be interpreted in different ways dependent on the depth of analysis. For example, studies performed at Davis California indicate that Lhasas with renal disease have higher blood pressure than normal Lhasas. High blood pressure, however, cannot be interpreted as the cause of the disease, since it is equally possible that the altered blood pressure is the effect of renal disease rather than the cause. In man, it is a fact that patients with renal failure will commonly have high blood pressure caused by the renal disease. Limited studies on Lhasas at the University of Georgia indicate that blood pressure is normal early in the course of renal disease, but becomes elevated when disease is advanced. This supports the theory that high blood pressure, is not the cause of disease in Lhasas. Information concerning inheritance patterns or inherited predisposition of the disease is of vital importance to Lhasa breeders. Casual observation suggests that the disease is inherited, but this observation, even if fact, gives the breeder no basis for a sound breeding program to eradicate the problem short of total depopulation of the kennel. Breeding trials must be conducted not only to confirm inheritance, but to extablish the mode of inheritance. With the latter information, carrier animals may be identified and kept from reproducing. 36 Breeding trials at the University of Georgia have revealed that mating of a male with renal disease with a female without disease (but whose siblings had disease) results in some pups with renal disease. An affected X affected mating resulted in 2 pups that are as yet too young to evaluate for the presence of renal disease. Outbreeding trials between affected Lhasas and normal dogs of another breed are also needed in order to characterize the mode of inheritance. In addition to breeding trials, other studies of cause are being investigated at the University of Georgia. Calcium metabolism is being monitored because some pups with disease have marginally elevated serum calcium values. Microscopic studies have revealed abnormal parts of the kidney (glomeruli) and microdissection studies are planned for the future. One important point to be made in studying the disease is the necessity for making studies before renal disease has become far advanced. By the time that signs of disease are apparent outwardly, only one-third or less of the kidney is working. If studies are done at that point, limited inofrmation can be obtained because the effects of the renal disease may be confused with the cause. To overcome this problem, studies at the University of Georgia have been conducted by surgically removing one of the two kidneys from pups at 3 or 6 weeks of age. The removed kidney can then be compared with the intact kidney which is obtained when the dog is eventually euthanatized. For example, it was found that a kidney removed at 3 weeks of age was normal for a dog of this age. Yet the dog from which the kidney was removed developed renal failure at 4 months of age because of severe disease of the opposite kidney. In this dog, at least, one can conclude that the puppy either originally had disease in only the kidney left, or that the disease attacked the kidney between 3 weeks and 4 months of age. 3. How can renal disease be identified early in affected dogs? Each breeder wants to identify abnormal dogs as soon as possible. Unfortunately, as indicated previously, renal damage is generally advanced at the time that the usual signs of disease appear. In my opinion, different severities or gradations of disease in Lhasas exist, inasmuch as some pups are severely ill at a few months of age, while others live for years and are capable of reproduction. Regardless of age, the earliest outward sign of disease is increased water intake and urinary output. At this time the dog may appear healthy in all other respects. It is important to know that the above sign is not unique to renal diseases, but may also be observed with several other diseases. When more renal tissue is destroyed, the dog may have a poor appetitie, lose weight, vomit, and be lethargic. These signs, when due to renal disease, are referred to as uremia. On many occasions, the excessive drinking and urinating and the more severe signs are observed almost at the same time. In young pups, slow growth may accompany the reanl disease. In cases of suspected renal disease, we veterinarians may perform a BUN or a serum creatinine determination. When these tests are elevated because of renal disease, they indicate that 1/4 or less of the kidney tissue is working. Since 3/4 of the kidney may not be working before abnormal results are obtained, it should be apparent that these are crude tests. While abnormal results are valuable in telling us that renal malfunction is present, negative results do not rule out the possibility of renal disease. For this reason, BUN and serum creatinine determinations are of value as screening tests only for detecting severe disease; normal values do not eliminate the possibility of renal disease. 37 Actually, the ability to concentrate urine is slightly more sensitive than BUN and serum creatinine in detecting renal disease. If a dog can concentrate its urine to a specific gravity of 1.025 or greater, it suggests that at least one-third of normal kidney function exists. But since ,two-thirds of normal kidney function must be lost before concentrating ability is lost, a normal urine specific gravity cannot be totally depended upon as an indication of freedom from renal disease. Unfortunately, more sensitive tests of kidney function are usually outside the realm of clinical veterinary practice. An aid in diagnosing renal disease aside from function is the determination of kidney size either by feeling the kidneys through the abdominal wall or by xrays taken after injection of contrast agents (excretory urogram or IVP) . My experience with renal disease in Lhasas indicates that renal size changes (small kidneys) are only apparent once disease is advanced. I am of the opinion that determination of kidney size is not a reliable method of screening Lhasas for renal disease in the sense that normal kidney size does not rule ow the possibility of mild disease. In summary, the unpleasant message is that giving a dog a "clean bill of health" by any method short of examining kidney tissue is not feasible at present. Kidney biopsy would provide earlier diagnosis, but is impractical as a routine screening procedure. 4. What is the logical way to eliminate the problem? A better understanding of the disease is essential for its elimination. Causative factors must be identified. If inherited, the pattern of inheritance must be determined so that a logical method can be employed to eliminate propagators of the problem from the breeding pool. This requires a realistic approach by Lhasa breeders to first of all admit that a problem exists, and secondly to lend financial support to research on the problem. It is my opinion that the problem is not "going to go away by itself". A letter from Dr. David Gribble will be printed in the next issue.
