The local festivities are probably the best proof that village life and pride is truly
alive and well in Artà and Colònia de Sant Pere. San Antonio Abad -16th and
17th of January- One of the most emblematic fiestas with its dimonis (devils),
bonfires and street-parade. Other festivities worth watching are: the last days
of Carnaval, or Carnestoltes - a winter festivity everybody joins in, especially
on the Thursday and on Dimarts Llarder (Mardi Gras); Easter - Christ’s descent
from the cross is the most relevant activity at the San Salvador sanctuary, on
walking routes, horse-riding routes, balloon
tours, guided tours, historical estate tours,
among others.

Good Friday; San Antonio de Padua - June 13th, with the traditional dance of
the cavallets (horses); San Salvador - towards the end of July and beginning
of August; San Pedro - End of June; and San Roque - Mid August - In Colònia
de Sant Pere. Artà’s traditional market is held every Tuesday (except on bank
holidays), only in the morning, finishing around 2pm. Artà’s Feria is held on the
second Sunday in September.
Festivities calendar
· Colònia de Sant Pere Beach. Located on the side of the Club Nàutic marina, it
is a small man-made beach right in the village. A family beach, it is a meeting
point for tourists and residents.
· Sa Canova is a long virgin 2 Km long beach, it has an area of sand dunes of
peculiar characteristics and a marshy area with interesting flora and fauna.

Artà has around 25 Km of coastline, which has been kept in a pristine state
of natural beauty, far from the tourist boom, which allows visitors to enjoy
magnificent beaches covered in white sands and quiet sandy coves and pebble
beaches.

The origins of this church are a small oratory
dedicated to Saint Peter, built by the first
families that moved to La Colònia. The
population growth that the seaside village
underwent made it necessary to have a
larger space for religious ceremonies. The
current La Colònia parish church is a singlenave building with an attached belfry. The
main façade has a marble lintel over the
portal, decorated on the sides with Ionic
pilasters. The frescos on the main altar,

Located in the Can Cardaix manor, a place
that takes us back in time and shows us
how noblemen lived in Mallorca from the
16th Century until today. We can stroll
through the more household rooms kitchen and dining-room - and then delve
into the more social rooms in different
styles - the ballroom, the pink room, the
Solomonic room, the Alphonsine room, the
Elizabethan Room. We can also enjoy the
artistic wealth of the foundation, with the
permanent exhibit of Aina Maria Lliteras’
work, a renowned artist in the current

The Ses Païses Talayotic Settlement is one
of the most important and best preserved
archaeological finds in the Balearic Islands.
The Settlement came about with the
construction of a round Talaiot, around
which several homes and ritual structures
were erected. Centuries later, the settlement
was surrounded by an impressive Cyclopean
wall, that even today “welcomes” visitors to
the compound. The route allows visitors to
discover life on the island 3000 years ago.

About 10 Km from the centre of Artà, the
Ermita de Betlem is located within the old
Binialgorfa estate, on the Artà mountain
range. Established in 1805 by hermits from
Randa and Valldemossa, the architectural
compound grew with cells, a kitchen, a
refectory and other rooms, among which
the church is noteworthy, with a simple and
sober construction, built by Joan Rosselló.
Access to the compound is along a wide path
lined with cypress trees. The surrounding
area holds a threshing floor and outbuildings
for storage and livestock buildings for the
hermits to use. Water for the hermitage was
provided by the Fuente de na Bernadeta.
There is a marvellous view of the landscape
dominating the whole bay of Alcudia.

· Arenalet de Albarca. A paradisical sandy beach at the foot of the S’Arenalet
shelter, which used to be the Lord of the Estate’s summer home. There is also a
small camping area.
· Font Celada or Fontsalada. Beach on the Albarca coast, with fine white sand. A
privileged location for those in search of calm and rest after the walk. It belongs to
the Parque Natural de Llevant and must be reached on foot.
· Es Matzoc is a virgin beach named after the imposing defence tower that dates
back to the 18th Century, known as the Albarca or Matzoc Tower. A beach with
both fine sands and pebbles that can only be reached on foot.
· Cala Mitjana. A beach of fine sands and dunes towards the interior. Access by
car using the Sa Duaia road.
· Cala Torta is a beautiful sandy beach, with fine white sand, surrounded by low
hillsides and a small pine wood. Access by car using the Sa Duaia road. It is the start
of the Artà Virgin Beaches route.

Club Náutico de la Colònia de Sant Pere. As
with most fishing villages, there is a seafront
promenade which is a highly attractive place

structure, using stone and mortar and have

The first emigrants that had made their
fortunes in the Americas (known as
Indianos) started arriving to Artà during
the 19th and 20th Centuries. These
newly arrived, newly rich people started
to compete with the local elite to make a
show of their wealth, and began importing
new construction styles from the places
they had originally emigrated to. Na
Batlessa is a clear example. The building
was constructed between 1898 and
1900. The most noteworthy parts of the
structure are the main façade, the curved
stairway that give access to the building,
the balcony on the piano nobile and the
lush gardens surrounding the manor.
In 1984, the house was donated by its
owner, Cristóbal Ferrer, to the Town Hall,
becoming a public building that currently
houses the municipal library and an
exhibition centre.
4. Artà Regional Museum

Artà’s current Town Hall dates back to 1941.
It is the town’s institutional headquarters
and also shares administrative services
with Can Solivellas, just a few meters
away. The building is totally symmetrical,
on three floors, it has an interior patio that
distributes the ground floor. The basement
was once used, like in many other places, as
a prison; the first floor were offices and the
upper floor as the records office.

·Es Caló is a small bay, surrounded by sandstone cliffs, wish a quay that shelters
it from bad weather coming from the West. It is about a 25 minute walk from
the Betlem urbanisation. Ideal for those in search of an isolated place to have
a dip.
· Caloscamps is a small cove, virgin and peaceful, located about three kilometres
from La Colònia de Sant Pere. The cove has both sand and pebbles. It is most
loved for its calm, transparent waters.
This small settlement originated in the 19th Century. A group of families moved
to what was then an isolated part of the world, where they lived from their own
crops and fishing expeditions into the bay. You can still see some remnants of
this agricultural past. Fig trees and vines spread their green leaves towards the
sea. Nowadays, Colònia is a summer residence for many of Artà’s inhabitants
that want peace and quiet next to the sea. As with most fishing villages, there is
a seafront promenade which is a highly attractive place to have dinner or go for
a quiet stroll in a family-friendly environment. The ideal place to watch the best
sunset in the area.

11. Artà Market and Craft space

Peninsula Measuring 1,671 hectares, the
Parque Natural de la Península de Llevant
natural parkjoins up the Albarca, Es Verger
and S’Alqueria Vella Estates, now public
properties. The landscape it encompasses is
quite varied, with steep hills, virgin beaches
and cliffs, with a wide range of flora and
fauna. The perfect place to enjoy the shade
of the pines and holm oaks and discover
the typical vegetation of the Majorcan
scrub land. An area to discover on foot, by
mountain bike, or even on horseback. A
great place to discover the Red Kite or the
Mediterranean Turtle, the Osprey or the
typical livestock of a Majorcan estate (goats,
donkeys, sheep...). And for anyone wanting
to spend the night, prior reservation, the
Park has several shelters, such as the
Albarca shelters, the S’Arenalet shelters,
with a camping area, or the Oguers shelter,
as well as several routes and activities
to fully explore the Parque Natural de la
Península de Llevant natural park.

Colònia de Sant Pere
San Salvador is an emblematic place in Artà.
Located on a small hill that dominates the
whole of the town, it has wonderful views of
the whole town, mainly made up of singlestory houses, shingled roofs and inner
patios. The walled enclosure, the sanctuary
and the Donats chambers (the compound
caretaker) stand out as points of interest.
Its location has made it a strategic place
in different historical periods. It was even
used as a hospital during the 1820 plague.
After the plague, the primitive church from
the 13th Century was burned down. The
sanctuary currently holds a Renaissancestyle church, inside which you can find a
Romanesque carving of the Virgin of Saint
Salvador, patron-saint of Artà since 1922, a
statue much revered by the municipality’s
inhabitants.

It was founded in 1928 by a group of
Scholars from Artà, people interested in
studying historical, archaeological and
cultural events in our region. The collection
on display today comes from private
donations and archaeological digs that the
museum commissioned. Most noteworthy
are its ornithological collection and the
exhibit on the last Prehistoric Settlement
in the Balearic Islands.

Majestic Gothic style building, the
construction of the current church started
in 1573. The façade has splendid Gothic
Arches and large windows that illuminate
the interior; the belfry is also noteworthy,
as is the large stained-glass rosette over
the main door or the ladies’ door. The
building only has one nave, though there are
fourteen chapels on the sides, a testament
to the wealth of the great families of Artà,
and to the wide variety of master craftspeople in the town. The museum holds a
wealth of artistic pieces in different formats
and styles, some gifts from distinguished
European sovereigns to clerics from their
court - Ecce homo -. Inside the temple, you
can see Barroque carvings.
Previously used as a station for the
Manacor-Artà train line, this three-storey
building is rectangular in construction and
currently holds a craft centre and the Tourist
Information Centre for Artà. The craft centre
showcases a range of craftspeople that work
with the endemic palm - llatra-, leather,
jewellery, textiles, furniture restoration,
pottery, honey, liquors, wine, etc., making
the centre an ideal shop front for local crafts
and local products. Strategically located on
the road leading into the town, the building
is a welcome centre for visitors, where they
can also find numerous services: bicycle hire,

ArtArtà is a cultural space created in order
to divulge “Sa Rondaia” - typical Majorcan
stories - by Artà’s sculptor Pere Ferrer
Pujol, as well as a space for showing off
Artà’s crafts and heritage. Visitors dive
into a wonderful world of magical stories
and fables surrounding papier mache
figures and resins that sprung from the
imagination of Pere Pujol. The ground
floor holds a craft shop with original pieces
by Artà’s craftspeople. On the first floor,
you can visit the “Sa Rondaia” exhibit, and
in the inner patio, you can enjoy an original
cafeteria, where you can have typical
bread and oil as well as delicious homemade, ecological deserts, such as typical
almond cake (gató).

Artà’s Municipal Theatre is on of the
municipality’s most important cultural
premises, open to all kinds of activities:
theatre, music, dance, book presentations,
conferences, workshops, symposia...
A new building, inaugurated in 2001,
with three main areas: the theatre per-se,
with a 460 spectator capacity; a second,
multi-function room, that can hold 70
people, and an entrance hall where the
box-office and cafeteria are housed.
Since it opened, it has become a cultural
benchmark in Mallorca, with a full
programme of activities, where the
Musical and Performing Arts Festival, the
Siente el Patrimonio initiative and the
Cool Days Festival stand out.

Convent
Half-way through the 16th Century a
group of members of the Franciscan Order
arrived in Artà, founding the San Antonio
de Padua Franciscan Convent. Located on
Calle San Antonio, the convent comprises
a cloister and a church. The church is
accessed by a set of steps that lead to
the main façade, with a typically Baroque
portal. In the centre we can see a rosette
and to the left there is an elegant square
belfry, capped off with a dome. One of
the jewels of the Convent is the cloister,
attached to the church, forming a square
with 24 columns and 20 stone arches
constructed in Ionic style. The centre
of the compound holds a cistern. The
rooms surrounding the cloister are used
as classrooms for the San Buenaventura
Franciscan School.

The mountains of the municipality had suffered many forest
fires and we do our utmost to preserve our forest. Avoid those
activities that could cause forest fire (to smoke, to lit bonfires,...)
Separating waste for recycling and cleanig the environment is
one of the main goals of Artà. Do not throw waste on the ground.
Throw it away in the bins or containers provided and if none are
available, take it away with you.
Maintaining and improving natural and cultural heritage is our
common responsibility. Respect all the elements that shape our
landscape and remenber that we must preserve the environment
for future generations.
