Why work lamps?
Working in the dark at night – that’s no problem as long as you have the right lamps!
Special headlamp types have been developed for vehicle lighting:
■ Dipped beam and main beam headlamps: for illuminating the road in road traffic
■ Fog lamps: for poor visibility conditions in road traffic
Work lamps: for the illumination of a working area near the vehicle away from public road traffic

Main beam
Fog light
Working light
At the mounting height typical for work lamps (2.50 m), the only lamps which provide sufficient illumination of the working area are
special work lamps. Standard vehicle lighting is nowhere near good enough! Good work lamps stand out thanks to their homogeneous
illumination of as large an area as possible and a soft transition at the edge.
Active safety through proper illumination!
It's not only the selection of the correct type of headlamp that's decisive for the choice of optimum working light but its correct positioning on the vehicle, too. Work lamps shine at an angle to the surface they are illuminating. This means that even small changes in the
angle of inclination and the mounting height have a great influence on the illumination of the working area. For large-surface illumination,
the higher the mounting position the better:
low mounting position
high mounting position
At different angles of inclination at a constant mounting height, the illumination provided by the work lamp changes (e.g. Mega Beam
Xenon at a mounting height of 2.50 m):
Angle of inclination 4°
Angle of inclination 10°
Angle of inclination 15°
The optimum angle of inclination of any type of work lamp depends on the basic characteristics of its beam pattern, e.g. for close-range,
near-ground, off-road or long-range illumination (for a summary of Isolux diagrams see pages 40-41 and for mounting examples for different vehicle types see page 43).

The headlamp systems of Hella work lamps
The classical paraboloid headlamp
This has a light reflector in the mathematically defined shape of a
paraboloid. The reflector captures the light of the bulb and reflects
it initially focussed parallel in the form of long-range main beam
light.
The specific pattern of light distribution is then produced by the
optical lenses and prisms in the profiled cover lens which achieve
limited scattering of the beam of light. Effective paraboloid headlamps need a large reflector in order to be able to capture a large
amount of light from the bulb.
Paraboloid reflector with
profiled cover lens
The modern FF (free-form) headlamp
In contrast to the paraboloid headlamp, the task of the cover lens
of distributing and scattering the light is already integrated in this
case into the surface of the reflector which is shaped as a free form
(i.e. mathematically not defined). The computer-calculated FF
reflector produces the required beam pattern.
The optical pattern still partly present in the cover lens is for the fine
distribution of the light beam.
The advantages of FF technology:
■ Even only small FF-reflectors capture more light from the bulb
and achieve a considerably larger degree of effectiveness.
■ Much larger beam scattering can be realised for extremely wide
beam patterns.
■ The more homogeneous illumination means pleasanter working
light with soft transitions at the edges without harsh contrasts.
■ Reduced self-dazzling and scatter loss.

Bulbs: Halogen bulbs
H3 and since just recently H9 bulbs are used for Hella work lamps.
Halogen bulbs usually contain a gas mixture including halogen
compounds (usually iodine or bromine compounds).
These make sure that the filament is "regenerated" by means of
complicated transport processes. This keeps the light output of the
bulbs more or less constant over the whole service life.
Hella is the first supplier worldwide to use H9 bulbs not exclusively for the automotive sector but for work lamps, too.
The use of H9 bulbs results in important advantages for customers:
■ H9 bulbs offer better light output than H3 bulbs, they supply
45% more luminous flux.
■ This means that H9 bulbs have 1.5 times more light output available than work lamps using H3 bulbs.
■ The bulb is accessible from the outside, which means direct
access for a direct electrical contact.
■ The bulb can be replaced easily without the lamp housing
having to be opened.
H9 bulbs are only available as 12 V versions.

Hints for the practical handling of bulbs
■ Never touch the glass bulb itself. Fingerprints burn in opaqueness and leave deposits on the bulb or the reflector. Early failure
of the bulb cannot be ruled out.
Innovative High Intensive Discharge (HID) xenon technology
Unlike conventional bulbs, xenon bulbs do not have a bulb
filament. Rather, the light is produced using the light arc principle.
Here, a mixture of the inert gas xenon and metallic salts is enclosed in a glass bulb the size of a matchstick head. The light arc is
ignited between two exactly positioned electrodes and kept alight.
A sophisticated electronic ballast is necessary for this process.
The high voltage necessary for the ignition of the light arc of 20,000 V
is produced by a 3rd generation ballast or in the base of the D1S
xenon bulb.
During continual use, more than twice the light is produced using
35 Watts of power than by using a 55 Watt halogen bulb.
FF reflector with xenon bulb
The advantages of work lamps using D2S / D1S xenon bulbs in
comparison with halogen bulbs:
■ 2.5 times the luminous flux (at the same time 35% less power
consumption).
■ Increased luminance results in a brighter and larger illumination
of the working area.
■ Light spectrum is similar to daylight – for natural colour reproduction of the environment.
■ Vibration-proof light arc instead of a sensitive breakable
filament.
■ Service life up to five times longer – reduced expenditure for
bulb replacement.
■ Constant brightness independent of fluctuations in the current
supply thanks to the electronic power control in the ballast.
■ Only 42 W power consumption – less strain on the vehicle
wiring system while at the same time producing more light.
Note: To achieve optimum service life of the xenon bulb (D1S /
D2S), the headlamp must not be operated inclined at an angle of
more than +/- 35 degrees from the horizontal position.
New 4th generation ballasts
Hella engineers have developed the tried-and-trusted (HID) xenon
ballasts even further: alongside 3rd generation ballasts Hella can
now supply 4th generation ballasts, too, which are used for (HID)
xenon work lamps.
The new features offer users some decisive advantages:
■ Cable length of up to 3,000 mm now possible
The longer cables offer the user a greater degree of flexibility.
Where with the 3rd generation ballasts users were forced to position the ballast directly near the work lamp, the ballast can now be
placed further away, in a possibly more favourable place.
■ No high-voltage cables necessary
In contrast to work lamps of the 3rd generation, the high-voltage is
produced directly in the protected bulb socket of the D1 bulb. The
complicated high-voltage plug-in connection on the xenon bulb
socket has been able to be eliminated. In place of the high-voltage
cable, a highly flexible connection cable with a small diameter is
now all that's needed.
■ Electronic ballast can be separated from the lamp
A plug-in connection on the 4th generation ballast makes it possible
to remove the connection cable to the headlamp. This means the
connection cable can be fed through an opening in the bodywork
and the ballast mounted inside the vehicle. This makes mounting
even easier.

When and where work lamps may be used
■ Work lamps are used to illuminate working equipment or a work process.
■ Acc. to StVZO § 52 (7) [Germany] all multi-track vehicles may be equipped with one or more work lamps.
Work lamps must not be used when driving on public roads, only on stationary vehicles, e.g. for loading and unloading.
Exceptions to this regulation are vehicles working on construction, road maintenance or cleaning, or refuse collection vehicles,
if driving is part of the work process. Work lamps may only be switched on if they do not dazzle other road users.
■ Work lamps must be able to be switched on independently of all other headlamps or lamps, e.g. a joint electrical circuit with the
reversing light is not permitted.
■ Since work lamps may only be used when vehicles are driving away from public roads, there are no special regulations valid for their
approval e.g. according to ECE or EG.
What does IP degree of protection mean?
The IP degree of protections are defined by DIN 40 050 part 9. IP stands for International Protection. The purpose of the standard is to
exactly define the protection of electrical equipment in vehicles against penetration by foreign particles including dust, and against
ingress of water. The exact definition of the degree of protection is achieved by means of different tests. Hella work lamps fulfil at least
degree of protection IP 5K4K.
The different degree of protections of Hella work lamps are explained in the following text in more detail.
Degree of protection IP 5K4K
Dust may only penetrate in such small quantities that it has no detrimental effect on function and safety. Water splashing against the
housing from all directions at increased pressure must not have a harmful effect; water pressure approx. 4 bar.
Degree of protection IP 6K4K
Dust must not penetrate at all. Water splashing against the housing from all directions at increased pressure must not have a harmful
effect; water pressure approx. 4 bar.
Degree of protection IP X9K
Water which is directed against the housing during high-pressure / steam jet cleaning must not have a harmful effect; water pressure
approx. 80 bar.
The standard DIN 40 050 part 9 is based on the specifications of the new version of IEC 529, issue 1989, amended and made suitable
for the specific demands made on electrical equipment in road vehicles.
What does GGVS / ADR mean?
The product is approved for mounting on transport equipment which corresponds to the requirements of GGVS / ADR B Rn 10251
and Rn 11251 for electrical equipment.
