TTR Sotheby’s International Realty is proud to support The Potomac School and their mission
to foster each student’s intellectual development, love of learning, and strength of character by
a spirit of support and challenge. The School’s richly varied curriculum draws students beyond
a mastery of fundamental skills toward the rewards of inquiry, initiative and reflection.

Dear Potomac Friends,
Welcome to The Potomac School’s 2015 scholarship auction,
Passport: A Night Around the World! Carolyn and I are excited to share this
special evening with you.
This auction is more than a fund-raising event. It has become a muchanticipated Potomac tradition, a chance for members of our community to
come together to enjoy friendship and fun, and to celebrate an educational
mission that we truly believe in and hold dear.
Since 1904, Potomac has provided education that combines intellectual
growth with character development. Our School has prepared thousands of
young people to live healthy, principled, and successful lives. This was made
possible by generations of committed teachers, administrators, and volunteer
leaders – individuals who steadily guided our students, and our School, toward
excellence. Equally critical were the many generous supporters who provided
the means to expand our work and strengthen our mission, year after year.
Today, Potomac continues to benefit from the generosity of parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff,
and friends. Your support of our School, and particularly of this auction, truly does make a difference. The
proceeds from tonight’s event will support student scholarships and faculty professional development –
helping to make a Potomac education available to children who would not otherwise be able to benefit from
one, and ensuring that our classrooms continue to be hubs of creativity, innovation, and joyful learning.
I want to mention that our special focus tonight will be on RAISING THE PADDLE TO FUND POTOMAC
SCHOLARS. During the auction, we will be asked to raise our paddles to signify our support for those
students who require financial assistance to attend Potomac, and for our vital faculty professional
development program. We hope to have 100% participation; please raise your paddle for whatever level you
can give. Your generosity is much appreciated.
In closing, I extend sincere appreciation to our auction co-chairs, Heidi Rodgers, Jennifer Sobich, and Jill
Park Chun, for the incredible energy, enthusiasm, and effort they have devoted to this event. On behalf
of our School and the students that we serve, I thank them and their dedicated committee members for
putting together what promises to be our most memorable and successful auction to date!
With gratitude for your friendship and support,
John Kowalik
Head of School

Passport: a night around the world
Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, welcome to Potomac’s 2015 scholarship
auction, and thank you for your support of this important event!
The proceeds from tonight’s auction will fund student scholarships and faculty
professional development – two areas of ever-increasing importance. Currently,
18% of Potomac’s students receive financial aid. The scholarships that this
event provides help make it possible for these qualified and deserving young
people to benefit from a Potomac education. In addition, this auction supports
our School’s commitment to make professional development opportunities
available to all faculty. A robust professional development program helps
ensure that Potomac can recruit and retain the best teachers – and that
our teachers have their fingers on the pulse of new developments in their
disciplines and in classroom theory and practice.
I join John Kowalik and the entire Potomac community in thanking our auction co-chairs, Heidi Rodgers,
Jennifer Sobich, and Jill Park Chun, for the commitment and creativity that made tonight’s event possible. Their
leadership, and the work that they and their committee members have done reflect outstanding dedication to
our School. We thank them for giving us this fun and festive opportunity to show our support for Potomac!
Again, thank you all for being here, and enjoy the evening.
Sincerely,
Larry Culp
Chair, Board of Trustees
PS: One important part of tonight’s event will be RAISING THE PADDLE TO FUND POTOMAC SCHOLARS.
We’re looking for 100% participation; please raise your paddle to support our outstanding students and teachers!

Dear Potomac Friends and Family,
Welcome to the 2015 Scholarship Auction! We are excited to
have you join us as, together, we raise critical funds for student
financial aid and faculty professional development. Whether
you can attend the event or would like to participate from afar,
there are many ways to give and all are appreciated.
The theme for this year’s auction is Passport: A Night Around
the World. While it is certain to be a fun event, it is also a
profoundly important one for the success of our Potomac
community.
As we begin this journey, consider these questions: Did you know that one in six students at The Potomac School
is receiving some form of tuition assistance? Did you know that almost every member of Potomac’s faculty is
participating in professional development opportunities this year?
Student scholarships and faculty professional development have been central to The Potomac School’s mission
since its founding in 1904. This auction is the only event held annually specifically to raise funds for these
programs. Whether you can attend or not, we hope you will join many other Potomac families in RAISING THE
PADDLE TO FUND POTOMAC SCHOLARS.
Our auction continues to be successful year after year in large part because of the generosity of our Potomac
families and our community partners. YOU, our supporters, make a difference.
Our auction would not be possible without many hours of volunteer work from many people. YOU, our
volunteers, make a difference.
On behalf of Potomac’s students and teachers, thank YOU for your support!
Sincerely,
Heidi Rodgers, Jennifer Sobich, and Jill Park Chun

Fabulous “French Versus American” Wine Tasting Dinner
for 8 in Your Home Catered by Susan Gage Caterers
This item is back by popular demand, due to its ever-increasing success! A gourmet
meal will be prepared in your home and served to your guests, along with a
customized selection of amazing French and American wines. The theme of this
evening is taken from the landmark tasting in 1976 called the Judgment of Paris, in
which French experts agreed that the California wines that they had tasted “blind” were better than the French. The result was
a blow to French national pride that shocked the country’s wine industry. During the evening, you and 7 of your friends will
reenact the Judgment of Paris. American and French wines will be pitted against each other, and you and your guests can judge
which ones are better! The wine-tasting dinner will take place in your home, where you can relax as local favorite Susan Gage
Caterers orchestrates the evening, pampering you and your guests with a unique five-course tasting menu and excellent service
throughout. Our only request is that you “blind” taste and report your results. Will the Americans prevail again? Cheers and
Bon Appetit!
Gratuity not included. Not available on any Saturday night or during the Thanksgiving to
Christmas holiday season.

Silent & Live Auction
bidding rules
General
●● Upon arrival at the Hilton, please check
in at the registration table. You will be
assigned a bid number that you may use to
bid on all Silent and Live Auction items at
the event. This bid number functions as a
legally binding signature for your bids at the
Auction.
●● All sales are final. No exchanges or refunds
on Auction items are permitted. All items
are sold “as is.” Please read specifications
and restrictions carefully before placing a
bid.
●● Unless otherwise specified, all Auction
items must be used by February 28, 2016.
Dates and times are to be arranged at
the mutual convenience of the donor and
purchaser. We suggest that initial contact
be made with the donor within 14 days of
the Auction. If you are having difficulty contacting a donor, please contact Potomac’s
Event Coordinator, Christine Sharkey, at
(703) 749-6362 or csharkey@potomacschool.org.
●● Auction items are not transferable from the
buyer to anyone else without the express
permission of the donor.
●● Payment may be made with cash, personal check (payable to Potomac School
Auction), Visa, or MasterCard. Payment in
full the evening of the Auction is mandatory. A single statement is issued for each
winning bid (including group purchases).
Checks are preferred, as they maximize
proceeds to the School.
●● To the extent possible, the buyer should
take home all items at the end of the evening. Any remaining items must be picked
up from the Potomac School Development
Office by 3 pm on Friday, March 6,
2015. Please contact Potomac’s Event
Coordinator, Christine Sharkey, at (703)
749-6362 or csharkey@potomacschool.org
if you need assistance. It is the responsibility of the buyer to arrange for delivery.
●● Check with your tax advisor regarding
the deductibility or non-deductibility of
individual items. In general, you may only
receive a tax deduction if the price that you
paid for the item is above the fair market
value. Please contact Potomac’s Event
Coordinator, Christine Sharkey at (703)
749-6362 or csharkey@potomacschool.org
if you would like the fair market value of the
item you purchased.
●● By his or her purchase, the buyer waives
any claims for liability against either The
Potomac School or the donor of the property or services. Neither the School nor the
donor is responsible for any personal injuries or damage to property that may result
from the use of property or services sold.
Silent
●● All items have bid sheets. Persons desiring to bid must do so by writing their bid
number and the amount of the bid on the
bid sheet.
●● Please be advised that each item has
a specified minimum starting bid and
minimum incremental bid. Each increase
in bid must equal or exceed the minimum
incremental bid amount stated on the bid
sheet in order to constitute a valid bid. A
bid will be disqualified if it does not meet
the minimum starting bid or does not
exceed the minimum incremental bid. In
this case, the bid of the preceding bidder
will be honored.
●● Closings will begin at 7:25 pm and sections will have staggered closing times
until 7:45 pm on the evening of the event.
Warnings will be given prior to closing.
The person offering the highest qualifying
bid prior to the close of the bidding will be
deemed the winner. No late bids will be
accepted. The decision of the person closing the table will be final.
●● The Live Auction will begin during dinner
and will continue without interruption until
all Live Auction items have been auctioned.
●● Live Auction items are listed numerically in
the catalog, and the Auctioneer will follow
this sequence during the Live Auction.
●● Your bid paddle contains your personal
bid number. A bid for the Live Auction is
entered by raising your paddle and being
recognized by the Auctioneer or her staff.
●● An acknowledged bid is a binding offer to
purchase the item(s).
●● On the fall of the Auctioneer’s gavel (or
other notification by the Auctioneer), the
highest bidder will be the purchaser of the
item.
●● Each new bid must be written on the next
blank line available on the bid sheet and
must respect the stated increments. Once
entered, a bid may not be withdrawn.
●● Please leave bid sheets on the tables for the
Auction officials to clear.
Live
●● In the event of a dispute on a bid, the
Auctioneer will act as the final authority in
determining the winning bid.
