Porter-Leath Constructing a World-class
Early Childhood Academy
On March 16, Porter-Leath broke ground to build its Early
Childhood Academy in South Memphis. This state-of-theart preschool and teacher training institute will establish a
continuum of early childhood education, from prenatal to age
five, that defines and promotes excellence for young children and
their families. The teacher training institute highlights PorterLeath’s commitment to
quality educators in every
classroom. The Academy
will open in 2017.
Designed
by
early
learning specialist RDG
Planning and Design, the
32,000-square-foot facility
weaves local culture,
history and geography
into safe, inviting spaces
that encourage play and
exploration. “During one
of our planning meetings,
one specific comment
resonated with the design team” said Ed Buglewicz, Early
Learning Architect at RDG. “Memphis is a city in the middle
of a forest, next to a river. That phrase, in conjunction with the
goal of connecting children with nature, emerged as the focus for
the academy and created the basis of the building’s experience
in contributing to the learning opportunities.” The Academy’s
child-friendly architecture utilizes natural light, lush landscapes
and bright colors that enrich learning opportunities.
The Academy will provide comprehensive early childhood,
education and support services for 224 students in 16 classrooms.

The teacher training center will develop successful early
childhood educators in partnership with Shelby County Schools.
Paired with its outstanding early learning facility, the Academy’s
teacher training program lays the groundwork for revitalizing the
Shelby County early childhood education system. Teachers will
attend sessions in the center’s large meeting space facilitated by
top experts in early childhood
education, see the best
practices implemented in the
classrooms, and then enter the
classroom to put into practice
what they have learned and
receive constructive feedback
from Master’s level teachers.
“This project is part of a huge
movement to reach the goal
of early childhood education
excellence,” says Mike Warr,
Porter-Leath Executive Vice
President of New Business
and Development. “The most
important task is remaining focused on the real bottom line - that’s
the children, family and great education for Shelby County.”
A special thank you to our Strategic Partners, the Kemmons
Wilson Family Foundation, Plough Foundation, Canale
Foundation, The Assisi Foundation, the Shelby County School
Board, SCS Superintendent Dorsey E. Hopson, Dr. DeAnna
McClendon, the Porter-Leath Board of Directors and Board of
Trustees, Porter-Leath preschool leadership staff, the Academy
Planning Team, RDG and Flintco for their commitment in
making this project a success.

SERVICE AREAS
Porter-Leath meets the needs of children and families at all
stages of life by focusing on forming solid foundations through
five focus areas:
Cornerstone gives newborns and preschool children the best start in life by
helping pregnant women and parenting families in their homes, thereby reducing
infant mortality as well as improving literacy and language skills.
Preschool helps young children and families in Shelby County obtain a
quality preschool education, developing the building blocks to make them
successful in school.
Spoonfuls provides nutritious meals to young children in family day-care
homes, helping low income communities raise healthy children.
Connections provides residential, foster care, adoption, runaway and homeless
services to abused or neglected children from birth to age 18 and creates permanent
families for them.
Generations gives seniors and volunteers the opportunity to make a difference
in the lives of disadvantaged children and young adults and provides a bridge to
receive health and other social services benefits for families and seniors.
Breaking Ground
on the Future
What an exciting day we had on March
16, 2016 at the groundbreaking of the
Porter-Leath Early Childhood Academy. In
our 165+ year history, we have had a lot of
exciting days: the day we started in the Fall
Sean Lee, President
of 1850 with our first orphan, our first foster
of Porter-Leath
child in the 1960’s, or our first home visit
for a pregnant mom in the 1990’s. How about when we opened our
very first Early Childhood Center in 2000 on our main campus and
served 56 children? Today we serve over 5,800 children every day in
our Preschool network! It’s amazing to think from where we’ve come.
I think someday it will make a great book, and I am ecstatic about
the next chapter - the Porter-Leath Early Childhood Academy. The
Academy is going to further our work to take children who struggle
with the stresses of poverty and deliver them to kindergarten ready
to learn. Academically-ready, socially-ready and emotionally-ready
to learn. The Academy is going to bring together the absolute best
place, people, programming and partnerships to create an example
of what truly excellent early childhood services can and should
be. All families will receive a full compliment of wrap around
services- health, disabilities, nutrition and parent engagement
support. Best of all, no family will pay a penny for their child to
attend this center.
Even though we broke ground on this amazing facility, really what
we’re doing is breaking down the barriers that prevent families from
breaking out of poverty. That’s what we must do and what we are
going to do. It is a big job, but we are up for it.
Sean Lee, President
Because of You…
During the past year, Porter-Leath served 12,607 children, 3,945 families, and 621 seniors thanks to your
generosity and steadfast commitment in moving Porter-Leath’s mission forward. Here are some of the great
strides and achievements these children and families have made through our programs...because of your support!
...214 runaway and homeless children were provided a safe and
supportive environment through our Runaway/Homeless Youth Shelter.
If you see or suspect a child needs help, please call us at 901-5772500.
...Expecting women have free resources and training to
insure their babies are born at a healthy birth weight!
Meet three healthy, happy sisters: K’liyah, 3 years old, Destiny, 23-months old, and
11-month old Shanell in our Cornerstone Program. When K’liyah and Destiny
were born, they both were well below the normal healthy birth weight guideline
of 5.5 lbs, weighing in at just 3.13 lbs and 4.3 lbs respectively. Their mother Teresa
enrolled in Porter-Leath’s free Parents as Teachers home visitation program, or
as we call it, Cornerstone, four years ago while in the middle of her pregnancy
with Destiny. Determined to become the best mother possible, Teresa worked
with her Parent Educator, Cassandra, over the next few years learning motor
development skills for Destiny, about proper nutrition and about minimizing
stress. Cassandra visited the family every two weeks over the next few years until
mom became pregnant with Shanell. As a result of her hard work, determination
and effort, Teresa gave birth to Shanell at a healthy birth weight of 6 lbs! When
asked what was her favorite thing about participating in the program, Teresa
stated, “EVERYTHING!” Because of Teresa’s dedication, she has referred many
new families to the Parents as Teachers program for these new moms and dads to
learn how to become their baby’s first teacher!
...173,900 meals were served to children in family day homes
throughout the Mid-South in our Spoonfuls program.
...Senior Citizens and Americorps members
are impacting the lives of at-risk children
through volunteer service and mentorship.
Porter-Leath’s Foster Grandparents Constant and Juanita
Reynolds were nominated for the Wharton Award from the
Memphis CARES Mentoring Movement while Porter-Leath
teacher Denise Robinson was recently nominated for the
Ujima Award. Denise served as an AmeriCorps member with
Porter-Leath before continuing on her career path to become a
Porter-Leath teacher. As a couple, Constant and Juanita invest
over 1,000 volunteers hours serving preschool children through the Foster Grandparent Program every year.

Toy Truck Wraps Up 2015 with a
Huge Success!
Toy Truck ended the year with a huge success, thanks to your
support and generosity and the tremendous help of title sponsor
Yuletide Office Solutions. We surpassed our goal by collecting
over 5,800 toys and ensured that all of the Porter-Leath children
received a gift under the tree. In addition to all the toys that were
collected, over $70,000 was raised from monetary gifts and a match
from Secret Santa! After a great week at Bud Davis Cadillac, we
wrapped up Toy Truck with something new - a fun block party at
WMC-TV Action News 5 complete with karaoke, food trucks, and
of course, Santa and his live reindeer. A special thanks goes out to
all of our sponsors, including Yuletide Office Solutions, Bud Davis
Cadillac, Parasol Awnings, Mahaffey Tent & Event Rentals, Gibson
Propane, Hogan Truck Leasing, James Gattas Jewelers, KIX 106 and
WMC-TV Action News 5.
During Toy Truck, all who donated $50 or more
at WMC-TV Action News 5 received a certificate
for a chance to win their choice of a diamond ring,
earrings, or pendant, each valued at over $3500,
from James Gattas Jewelers. Congratulations Sharon
Key for being the grand prize winner and taking
home the beautiful ring!
Thank you to the Yuletide Staff for delivering two massive truckloads of toys!
