Entry fee: $75 per player 4 Golf GREEN’S CORNER by Jeff Mack The Bermuda on the CCL course is now growing quite vigorously. Therefore, all “short-cut” areas are on a steady diet of a plant growth regulator known as Primo. This material is applied approximately every 3 weeks throughout the growing season. A turfgrass stand as a whole takes on a much more smooth and dense appearance while under the effects of regulation. Frequent mowing still takes place to keep the CCL fairways, tees, and approaches looking “crisp and clean”. We are very pleased to report that the CCL greens remain in good health. It is difficult to predict what environmental conditions will be like in June. Some years it has been a mild month, yet others like in 2010, can be in the low 90’s nearly everyday. Our management practices are largely dictated by air and soil temperatures. We will stay on the aggressive assuming temperatures remain somewhat mild. Once they begin to escalate to more “summer-like” numbers, the focus of our practices shift from offensive to defensive. A large focus is being placed on gaining more turf height on the collar around the bulkhead of #2 Dye green. We understand the fact that more turf height on this particular section of collar may aid in trapping golf balls from rolling off the green into the water. Especially at the current time while the CCL greens are firm. We will continue to use turning boards when we mow this green throughout the summer to minimize matting and compaction of the turf. This area will also be aerified, top-dressed, and fertilized frequently until the desired 2.5” to 3” height is achieved. Constant attention is continuing to be placed on proper maintenance of the CCL bunkers. New sand has been recently added to a portion of the smaller hand-rake bunkers where it was deemed necessary. Detectable improvement of consistency between and within all of the bunkers on a daily basis is one of this department’s main focal points for 2011. Trial work with the experimental material “Amicarbazone” was completed on #5 and #6 Pines’ greens back in April. Without question, visually the Poa Annua populations on these (2) putting surfaces was significantly reduced due to treatments. Some phyto-toxicity was observed to the Bent; more so on #5 than #6. Amicarbazone is expected to be labeled for turf by the end of this calendar year. It remains unclear at this time whether or not putting green height turf will be included on the label. All CCL Golf Course and Grounds Maintenance employees are now proudly wearing new uniform shirts and hats that arrived back in May. This attire will be worn by all on a daily basis until the cooler weather of autumn arrives. A fairly recent and advertised modification to our program was any drainage work performed in “shortcut” areas of the courses is sodded back immediately following installation. Great effort is currently being placed on getting the scars from drainage work, completed before the onset of the “sodding back” process, properly blended in with the surrounding turf. The Golf Course Maintenance Department would like to welcome Mr. Gerry Paige as the new CCL Green Committee Chairman, as well as the new Green Committee members. We look forward to working together in continually improving the conditions of the CCL courses and grounds. At the same time, we would like to extend a sincere “thank you” to CCL’s outgoing Green Chairman, Mr. Dan Clark, as well other members leaving the Committee, for their years of service, dedication, and support. As always, if you should have any questions, please feel free to stop me on the course, or make an appointment to see me in my office. CCL'S PATRIOT GOLF DAY Saturday, September 3 In conjunction with this great cause, your Golf Pros will play as many holes as possible Monday, September 5 to raise additional funds. We will ask for pledges based on total number of holes played that day. Be on the look out for more information. 5 DREAMGIRLS! 2011 Ladies' Invitational June 8-10 There are still spots to sign up, so don't miss this great tournament! Week four was called for rain at nine holes, but the weather has cooperated and play has proceeded for the Tours Series and regular formats. So far, 497 rounds have been played through the nine weeks, and eight different formats have been played. The MGA’s traditional grilled hamburgers or grilled chicken at the Dye, and Bert Koudijs’ lunch selections for the group at the Nicklaus, have been excellent throughout the year as well as the turnout. This year, the MGA introduced two new games: The MGA Challenge and the Ironman Contest. The MGA Challenge is being led in the “Net Category” by Harry Rowe at -1 and running close behind by Gary Kranz and Peter Smoot both at -3. In the “Gross Category,” Dan Clark and Rusty Hanna are tied at -1, and a number of players are tied at “even.” The “Ironman Contest” has Fred Blankenhorn, Bill Chepla, Bryan Janney, David Jackson, Joe Rogers, and Paul Walters tied with having played in 8 of the 9 events. 200 or so other competitors are still potential winners, and twenty-six games and a number of “Challenge” holes remain to be played, so these players can’t rest on their laurels. As a brief reminder, the start time changed to 8:30 a.m. on May 4 and will remain through the rest of the year. Players may bring guests for a nominal $5 fee. Nick Duffy requests that players sign up by 2 p.m. on the Tuesday prior to the Wednesday game, but he will try to accommodate any late registrants. Players can register on the CCL website or call either pro shop. The MGA continues to be a good venue for meeting other club members and playing a fun round of golf, so please register and enjoy the day and lunch. With a field of eighty ladies, the theme of Cinco de Mayo was quite apropos for the May 5-6 tournament. Chaired by Doris Briley and Cheryl Zelick, fabulous food, fellowship, and golf ruled for two glorious days! Winners for the tournament are listed. With the arrival of June comes our biggest event of the year: CCL Ladies’ Invitational on June 8-10. This year we will be the “Dream Girls” as we don our 60’s colors and fashions for the cocktail party on June 9, in the midst of three days of festivities which include: practice round, chipping and putting contest, shootout, and, of course, golf followed by luncheon and awards. Also in June, we will have the CCL Senior/ Super Senior Club Championship on June 23-24. To round out June our other playday formats will be: June 2, Waltz; June 16, Individual Quota; June 30, 40 Scores for 40 Balls. Let me say thanks again to all six of you for allowing us to tour your lovely gardens. The trip to Atlanta, Georgia was wonderful. The weather, sites, food and company was outstanding. Jan Hobbie and Ada Legg worked hard to make it such a enjoyable trip for us all. I can't wait to hear where we are going next year. Our last meeting for the year was a luncheon and fashion show. Palm Garden supplied the fashions as well as tablecloths and a gift for each of us. We had 125 ladies attend. The clothes were modeled by Lillian Barrone, Sue Sabanos, Pat Brandt, Kate Spenser (Pat's granddaughter), Suzanne Finkeldie and Suzanne Thatcher. All these ladies did such a great job; the clothes and models looked lovely. We also enjoyed the lunch prepared by our chefs at the Country Club of Landfall. Thanks Suzanne Finkeldie, for arranging our models. Gail Smith, our president, has done an outstanding job this year and we all enjoyed working with her. Before our luncheon, Gail thanked her Board and introduced the new Board for 2011-2012. Sharon Novak, next year's president, is looking forward for another great year. She has lined up some wonderful programs for us. Our first meeting will be September 14 with our very own and talented Ed Hearns as our speaker. If you haven't come to any of our meetings, don't skip out on the opportunity. It is a wonderful way to meet your neighbors as well as learn new things about your community. We meet the second Wednesday of the month (September-May) at 1 p.m. at the Landfall Clubhouse. Dues are only $25.00 a year. You can send your check to Marie Russo at 2104 Bay Colony Lane. Please include your address, phone number and e-mail and make the check out to Great Oaks. Have a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing you September 14. 2011 Landfall Tradition Teams Have Strong Spring Bill Paris, Landfall Tradition Marketing Chair It's mid-May as this is being written, and a year ago at this time we were eagerly watching the three NCAA Women’s College Golf Regional tournaments to see which teams would qualify to come and play here in the 2010 NCAA National Championships later that month. It was noted in an earlier article that our 2011 Tradition field was very strong, and the lineups for this year’s Regionals certainly confirmed that. Including our own UNCW Seahawks who qualified by winning the CAA Championship, 16 of the 18 teams coming to the Tradition qualified to play in one of the three regional tournaments that determine the participants in the 2011 NCAA Championship. Included in the 16 were Duke, seeded #2 in the Central Region, Purdue, seeded #2 in the East, and Virginia, seeded #2 in the West. In fact, 12 of the 16 Tradition-bound teams were seeded tenth or better in their regions (each region has 24 teams competing, of which eight per region qualify for the championship). At the time of this article, the regionals are history, and 7 of the Tradition-bound teams have qualified to play in the 2011 NCAA Championships in Bryan, Texas May 18-21. They are North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wake Forest. The Duke Blue Devils, who had qualified for the championship 13 straight years, just missed by finishing ninth in the Central Regional. As you read this article, the 2011 NCAA Championship will be over, and we will know more about how the Tradition-bound teams have done. We can be sure, however, that our 2011 Tradition field will be one of strongest ever and an event to truly anticipate. As always, we will need some 300 volunteers for the 3-day tournament as well as players for the funfilled College Am tournament the day before competition begins. To volunteer or sign up to play, please visit our website at www.LandfallTradition.com. All profits from the Landfall Tradition go to support the golf scholarship programs of the UNCW men’s and women’s teams. 15 DECLARATION DASH! Landfall Foundation Sunday, July 3 at 8 a.m. This fun family event starts with the 10K runners, followed by the 5K and 2K runners and walkers. All runs start and finish in Scrimshaw. Parking will be changed this year and instructions will be in your information packet. Staggered start times will insure all runners get to enjoy the courses and Colin Hackman of Go Time, will be timing the races using state-of- the-art equipment which displays your run time and place as you cross the finish line. Timing will allow parents to run their own races then run the Timed 2K with their children. Some of our youngest runners will be out there to beat their prior best times for the past three years on the 2K! The walk is a wonderful family event. Walkers can choose to be timed or untimed. Strollers are allowed. Like last year, we encourage you to form a team with times from any combination of races counting.
