Beauty
KANANI
The following beauty and grooming tips are offered for both of
you to help look and feel your best on this important day.
A wonderful way for brides and grooms to settle into the magic
of Maui is to enjoy a relaxing and rejuvenating beauty and spa
treatment. Many spas offer special packages for couples, or even the
entire bridal party, for head-to-toe pampering.
Most brides prefer to have a professional hair and makeup session
prior to the ceremony. You may go to a spa, beauty salon or have a
hair stylist come right to your room to serve you. Consider having
a complete trial makeup and hair session prior to the wedding as a
test run — to help you decide how you would like to look on your
wedding day. If you plan on wearing a headpiece, bring it with you,
as it will impact your look and hairstyle. Your professional stylist
will use their experience with Maui’s breezes and lighting to give you
good advice, so that you can look your best on your wedding day.
GORDON NASH PHOTOGRAPHY
Grooms need beauty treatments too, because all eyes will be on both
of you during your ceremony. Manicures, pedicures and haircuts can
contribute greatly to his confidence and finished look. Spas also offer
services especially tailored to male customers to ensure their comfort.
Before the ceremony, take precautions to protect your skin from
Maui’s tropical sun. Tender skin can burn quickly unless great care is
taken. It is best to stay out of the sun before the ceremony, if you can,
or at least use sunscreen with the highest protection possible.

If you are considering hiring a wedding
coordinator, perhaps the single most
important thing to keep in mind is to
select someone you can work with closely.
When considering a choice, listen to your
intuition. Is the coordinator focused on
the wedding you want? Do they seem to
have a good knowledge of local services,
wedding sites and resources? Are they
available when you call, and do they return
your calls or e-mails promptly?
The coordinator who can be most helpful
knows the islands, wedding sites and
weather conditions. They have an array of
vendors and services from which to choose
that will suit your desires and work within
your budget. They love Maui’s romance
and glamour and also respect its culture
and environment.

Maui has a number of qualified, prepared
and experienced coordinators, who either
work on their own, for independent
wedding companies, or for hotels and
resorts. Wedding coordinators also may
coordinate receptions, and some handle
travel arrangements. Coordinator prices and
fees vary, so ask for estimates that include
all costs. Don’t forget to have your wedding
coordinator put everything in writing and
check if they are affiliated with the Better
Business Bureau.
Marriage License
PALAPALA MALE
To obtain a
marriage license, an
application must be
filed with a marriage
license agent in the
State of Hawai‘i.
There are no residence

or citizenship
requirements, and
blood tests are not required. The legal age to marry is 18 years old.
Persons under 18 must contact the Hawai‘i Department of Health
for special instructions.
The prospective applicants must prepare an official application
and file the application in person with a marriage license agent.
The application may be completed online - https://marriage.
ehawaii.gov. The application will not be accepted if sent by
either postal mail or e-mail. The marriage license fee is $60.00
(plus $5.00 portal administrative cost). The fee may be paid
online or in-person at the time the application is submitted to a
marriage license agent. Proof of age must be provided as follows:
anyone 18 and under must present a certified copy of their birth
certificate, while persons 19 and over must present a valid driver’s
license, passport or official identity card.
The marriage license is good for 30 days, including the date of
its issuance, after which it automatically becomes null and void.
The license may be used only in the State of Hawai‘i and is valid
on all islands. Your appointment to obtain a license should be
scheduled directly with a licensing agent, or your coordinator will
usually make the appointment for you. Licensing agent offices are
located in all parts of Maui County, which includes the islands of
Moloka‘i and Lana‘i. For the agent office nearest where you will
be staying, please contact the local office of the Department of
Health at one of the numbers below or visit its web site at http://
health.hawaii.gov/vitalrecords/marriage-licenses
Maui County Phone numbers: Maui/Lana'i – (808) 984-8210,
Moloka‘i – (808)553-7870.
The central marriage license office is located on O‘ahu at the
Department of Health, Kîna‘u Hale, 1250 Punchbowl Street,
Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96813. Recorded information on marriage
licenses may be obtained via the telephone system, any day or
any time, by calling (808) 586-4545. Marriage performers must
be duly licensed by and in the State of Hawaii to perform the
marriage ceremony. If desired, you may request the marriage
performer to present his/her license for your inspection. Once
the license has been issued, there is no waiting period before the
marriage can take place.
A marriage license and marriage certificate are different
documents. The marriage license permits a marriage to take
place. The marriage certificate indicates that a legal marriage
has been performed. The marriage certificate is prepared and
filed by your licensed marriage officiant or performer with the
Department of Health. A newly married couple receives one
(1) certified copy of the marriage certificate at no extra charge,
upon payment of the marriage license fee, which will be sent to
the couple by mail (60-120 days) after the marriage has been
performed. If a marriage certificate is needed sooner than this,
you can apply for one or more additional certified copies by
going to http://health.hawaii.gov/vitalrecords/
HAWAII MARRIAGE EQUALITY
Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed Senate Bill 1 into law on November
13, 2013, that legalized marriage for same-sex couples in the State of
Hawaii effective December 2, 2013. This new law recognizes marriages
between individuals of the same sex and extends to same-sex couples the
same rights, benefits, protections, and responsibilities of marriage that
opposite-sex couples receive. Hawaii is now the 15th state in the nation
to fully embrace marriage equity. The Hawaii Marriage Equality Act
of 2013 provides marriage equity regardless of gender. The process for
applying for a marriage license, getting married, and having the marriage
registered remains unchanged. Visit https://marriage.ehawaii.gov to
apply for a marriage license in the State of Hawaii under the Marriage
Equality Act of 2013.

Wedding officiants can be female or
male ministers of any faith, professional
nondenominational wedding ministers, or
judges, provided they are certified and have
been assigned a commission number by the
Hawaii Department of Health. If you bring
your minister from home, they can perform
a legal ceremony on Maui if they apply for
and receive temporary certification from the
Hawai‘i Department of Health prior to the
ceremony. The Marriage Equality law effective
as of December 2, 2013 recognizes marriages

marriage that opposite-sex couples receive. The
Hawaii Marriage Equality Act does provide that
any clergy, minister, priest, or rabbi may refuse to
solemnize a marriage if it is against their religious
beliefs, without any penalty or legal liability. Please
check with our MWA professionals for those that
offer same sex and civil union packages. Officiants,
Reverends and Kahu's are female and male. There
are many different types of ceremonies available.
Some ministers will personalize their ceremonies
for you and include special words you might want
to say to each other. If you want to personalize your
ceremony, it is best to let the minister know right
away. Your minister sets the tone and pace for your
ceremony. While many couples do experience prewedding jitters, once you stand together with your
officiant, you can truly relax. They will put you
both at ease, lead you gently through the ceremony,
and prompt you with what you are to say and do all
along the way.

Catering
HO‘OMÄUKAUKAU MEA ‘AI
Maui offers a wide variety of catering styles, from a romantic
sunset dinner for two overlooking the beach to an elegant
reception for hundreds of guests, complete with fanciful ice
sculptures. Reception catering is available on yachts, hotel grounds,
at fine dining restaurants and oceanfront under the stars.
The Pacific Ocean is bountiful in its offerings of fresh fish, such as
ono, mahimahi, ‘øpakapaka, moi and ‘ahi. Maui also has grassfed, island beef. Local pineapple, mango, coconut, guava, taro,
macadamia nuts and Maui onions are just some of the flavorful
ingredients that give menus regional flair.
When looking for a caterer, interview many different prospects and
check for references. Many reception sites have their own catering
services, so you may want to keep that in mind when searching for
a location. Also check to see what other services the caterer offers.
Some will decorate, stage, serve and also provide a wedding cake.
Catering most often is a large part of the reception budget, so ask
about additional fees, overtime costs, gratuities and taxes.

CAKES
On Maui, cakes are often created
using island fruit, such as guava,
coconut, banana, pineapple and
passion fruit. When sampling
wedding cakes, don’t forget to try
one of these local favorites.
Before visiting the pastry chef,
find photos of cakes that you like
in magazines or on the Internet.
Take these with you to help give
the baker an idea of what you’re
looking for. Also ask to see pictures
of their work.

A wide range of cakes are available,
from simple cakes for two to an

You may even choose to have an

Choosing what you will wear for your
wedding is an important part of wedding
planning fun. Whether on the beach, in a
church or ballroom, Maui weddings may be
very formal or casual. The island’s relaxed
lifestyle lends to wedding wear in a wide
selection of styles, ranging from traditional
white wedding gowns and tuxedoes to island
wear in bright colors and light fabrics.
Maui shops have all the latest designs and
fabrics, and the items you see at home also
are offered here for sale or rent. If you prefer
to make your selections at home, you may
want to have your clothing shipped ahead of
time for pressing.
Before selecting your gown, it can be helpful
to look through bridal magazines to find
out what the current trends and styles
are. Give your bridal consultant as much
information as possible about your plans,
tastes and what you’re looking for. When
choosing a gown, visualize how it will
look in the setting you’ve chosen and keep
in mind your comfort and mobility. For
instance, if you plan to dance a lot at your
reception, consider a gown with no train or a
detachable one.
A wide variety of choices are available to
today’s groom. Contemporary tuxedos are
easy to dress up or dress down, and there are
new tailored options to allow him to express
his own individual style. You may even opt
for white dinner jackets, 1950s style. A great
looking tuxedo can boost his confidence and
will look beautiful with your wedding gown.
Formal wear photographs very well and is
striking against Maui’s sandy beaches, blue
ocean and skies.
A popular favorite is to match the color of
the cummerbund and bow tie (or necktie or
cravat) to the bridesmaids’ dresses.
Whatever you choose to wear, make sure it is
something you feel comfortable and relaxed
in to enjoy your beautiful Maui wedding.

Travel & Lodging
KA HUAKA‘I ME KAHI NOHO AI
Recognized as the Best Island in the World
by Condé Naste Traveler magazine for an
unprecedented 20 years, Maui is a very
popular place for weddings. More and more
couples are choosing destination weddings
in order to have a family vacation at the
same time, and group rates are available. Ask
a Maui Wedding Association travel agent
member for information on special packages
and pricing.
Maui has virtually every type of lodging you
can imagine. There are oceanfront private
estates, villas, cottages, condominiums and
upcountry bed-and-breakfasts. It is easiest to
choose your lodging when booking your travel.
You should shop around; sometimes you can
get a great air, car and room package. Some
accommodations also have sites for a wedding
ceremony and reception. Major hotels and
resorts abound along Maui's shores. Condos
are a good choice if you would like to have a
kitchen in your accommodation.

Photography & Videography
PHOTOGRAPHY
Your wedding pictures are priceless; they are among the most vivid
reminders of your wedding. Begin searching for your photographer
early to ensure their availability.
Our membership listings are an excellent way to find your
photographer; most of them have Web sites where you can see
samples of their work. Another effective way is by word-of-mouth
referrals, so ask various wedding vendors.
Wedding photography is very demanding and is both an art and
a science. It requires a professional with the proper equipment,
the right skills and a pleasant personality. In choosing your
photographer, think about your personal style and how you want
your wedding day to be captured. Do you love the classic look of
black and white? Are formal portraits your style? Do you prefer lots
of candid shots? Do you want a combination of all of the above? Ask
your photographer what style they use.
An important issue for you to consider is whether the person
whose photographs you are looking at is the one who is going to
photograph your wedding. This may be a factor if you’re considering
a large studio with many photographers on staff or if a wedding
planner is providing a photographer for you.
Ask prospective photographers for clear information on fees, because
they can vary considerably, and be sure to ask about refund policies.
Some photographers include a CD in their pricing, while others
keep the photos and charge for reprints and enlargements. Advances
in technology also allow photographers to upload images to an
online photo gallery. If you choose this system, you will be able to
view your prints online and purchase prints on the Internet.

VIDEOGRAPHY
Video captures life’s most precious and beautiful moments — as
they happen. Once back home, many couples throw special parties or
arrange receptions around showings of their wedding video for friends
and family who weren’t able to attend the ceremony. On Maui, a
professionally-edited wedding video is usually 20-40 minutes long. There
are also some videographers who offer a live feed to the Internet, so your
family and friends can share in your joy as it is happening, or for better
viewing quality, just a short few hours afterwards.
The videographer can attend the ceremony rehearsal to strategize
and visualize shots to ensure full coverage of the big day. During
this time, suggestions and adjustments can be made to meet your
style and taste. The videographer also should work hand in hand
with the still photographer to ensure that your wedding day is fully
MIKE SIDNEY PHOTOGRAPHY
captured as a beautiful memory. If you have decided on a particular
videographer, you may want to ask them which photographers they
have worked with before.
Most videographers offer a variety of services that can be tailored to
your wishes. New developments in digital and camera technology
have revolutionized the industry. Professional digital video cameras
do not necessarily require bulky lighting equipment and wires.
Cameras have become much smaller, and couples often are amazed at
the clarity and camera angles possible with the newer equipment.
A good wedding video will tell the story of your wedding with clarity
and emotion. Your treasured Maui wedding video gives you the
chance to preserve the story of your special day.

Flower & Lei
E LEI NÖ AU I KOU ALOHA.
I WILL CHERISH YOUR LOVE
AS A BEAUTIFUL ADORNMENT.
Exotic flowers abound in Hawai‘i, and when blended with traditional
wedding flowers, the results are spectacular. The brilliant colors and
unique scents of island flowers give brides a wonderful opportunity
to create beautiful bouquets and centerpieces. Fragrant tuberose,
gardenia, delicate orchids and exotic protea — a splendid array of
choices — will inspire your imagination and delight your senses.

A Lei is the symbol of love and aloha in the Hawaiian Islands.
The traditional old Hawaiian custom dictates that the bride and
groom exchange lei as part of their wedding vows. As a gesture of
appreciation and respect, some couples present a lei to their officiant
as well as special guests in attendance.
When giving a lei, it is customary to give the lei recipient a kiss on
each cheek when adorning them with the lei. If the lei has a bow, it is
usually worn on the side. For single people, the bow should be on the
right side; if married or spoken for, the bow should be on the left.
As a timeless remembrance of love and aloha in Hawai‘i, the lei
continues to endure as a popular custom and a part of Hawai‘i’s
cultural heritage.

Transportation
KA HALIHALI ‘ANA MA MAUI
A grand arrival and elegant departure from your wedding
will make your celebration all the more special. A wide variety
of transportation choices are available on Maui: helicopters,
limousines, stretch SUVs, 25 passenger mini-bus, a horse and
carriage or a vintage Rolls Royce. You could even arrive and
depart in a canoe! Whatever your needs, make reservations
well in advance. Investigate the many different types of
transportation and inquire as to all fees and services.

Also ask about parking situations at your wedding venue. Many
private estates and smaller beaches have limited parking, in which
case a transportation service may be advisable for your wedding party

During your stay on Maui, you’ll want to tour and discover the treasures
of our island. To see all that Maui offers, we advise you to rent a car.
While the island is not large, points of interest are spread out. If you want
to take the famous trip to Ha-na or see a sunrise on Haleakala-, you’ll be
very glad you arranged for your own transportation.
Music
NÄ MELE ‘O HAWAI‘I
Music is an essential part of the most
romantic wedding, along with the natural
sounds of the island’s wind and waves. Some
of the finest entertainers in the world have
made Maui their home.
Island talent runs the full gamut of
musical styles. In addition to the classics,
you have a variety of choices for your
wedding celebration: Hawaiian, classical,
contemporary, pop, jazz, reggae, rock and
roll, big band, swing, ethnic or country. Most
musicians offer song lists, so you can select
your favorites in advance.
Background music throughout the ceremony
adds beauty and harmony to the spoken
words. If you are planning a romantic dinner
or reception afterwards, music is the perfect
enhancement to the festivities. You can
either continue with the musicians from the
ceremony or consider a different group to liven
up the celebration. A disc jockey or a live band
is great for encouraging guests to dance.
AUBREY HORD PHOTOGRAPHY LLC
You may want to invite some of Maui’s
talented performers for true Hawaiian flare:
a conch shell blower, hula dancers, Tahitian
drummers, fire knife dancers, a Hawaiian
chanter, a slack key guitarist or even an entire
hula hålau (hula school) to perform a luau
dinner show.
Many of Maui’s talented musicians have
recorded professional CDs, a wonderful
keepsake to commemorate the evening.
