A wonderful way for brides and grooms to settle into the magic of Maui is to enjoy a relaxing and rejuvenating beauty and spa treatment. Many spas offer special packages for couples, or even the entire bridal party, for head-to-toe pampering. Most brides prefer to have a professional hair and makeup session prior to the ceremony. You may go to a spa, beauty salon or have a hair stylist come right to your room to serve you. Consider having a complete trial makeup and hair session prior to the wedding as a test run — to help you decide how you would like to look on your wedding day. If you plan on wearing a headpiece, bring it with you, as it will impact your look and hairstyle. Your professional stylist will use their experience with Maui’s breezes and lighting to give you good advice, so that you can look your best on your wedding day. GORDON NASH PHOTOGRAPHY Grooms need beauty treatments too, because all eyes will be on both of you during your ceremony. Manicures, pedicures and haircuts can contribute greatly to his confidence and finished look. Spas also offer services especially tailored to male customers to ensure their comfort. Before the ceremony, take precautions to protect your skin from Maui’s tropical sun. Tender skin can burn quickly unless great care is taken. It is best to stay out of the sun before the ceremony, if you can, or at least use sunscreen with the highest protection possible. Before selecting your gown, it can be helpful to look through bridal magazines to find out what the current trends and styles are. Give your bridal consultant as much information as possible about your plans, tastes and what you’re looking for. When choosing a gown, visualize how it will look in the setting you’ve chosen and keep in mind your comfort and mobility. For instance, if you plan to dance a lot at your reception, consider a gown with no train or a detachable one. A wide variety of choices are available to today’s groom. Contemporary tuxedos are easy to dress up or dress down, and there are new tailored options to allow him to express his own individual style. You may even opt for white dinner jackets, 1950s style. A great looking tuxedo can boost his confidence and will look beautiful with your wedding gown. Formal wear photographs very well and is striking against Maui’s sandy beaches, blue ocean and skies. Our membership listings are an excellent way to find your photographer; most of them have Web sites where you can see samples of their work. Another effective way is by word-of-mouth referrals, so ask various wedding vendors. Wedding photography is very demanding and is both an art and a science. It requires a professional with the proper equipment, the right skills and a pleasant personality. In choosing your photographer, think about your personal style and how you want your wedding day to be captured. Do you love the classic look of black and white? Are formal portraits your style? Do you prefer lots of candid shots? Do you want a combination of all of the above? Ask your photographer what style they use. An important issue for you to consider is whether the person whose photographs you are looking at is the one who is going to photograph your wedding. This may be a factor if you’re considering a large studio with many photographers on staff or if a wedding planner is providing a photographer for you. Ask prospective photographers for clear information on fees, because they can vary considerably, and be sure to ask about refund policies. Some photographers include a CD in their pricing, while others keep the photos and charge for reprints and enlargements. The traditional old Hawaiian custom dictates that the bride and groom exchange lei as part of their wedding vows. As a gesture of appreciation and respect, some couples present a lei to their officiant as well as special guests in attendance. When giving a lei, it is customary to give the lei recipient a kiss on each cheek when adorning them with the lei. If the lei has a bow, it is usually worn on the side. For single people, the bow should be on the right side; if married or spoken for, the bow should be on the left. As a timeless remembrance of love and aloha in Hawai‘i, the lei continues to endure as a popular custom and a part of Hawai‘i’s cultural heritage. Music NÄ MELE ‘O HAWAI‘I Music is an essential part of the most romantic wedding, along with the natural sounds of the island’s wind and waves. Some of the finest entertainers in the world have made Maui their home. Island talent runs the full gamut of musical styles. In addition to the classics, you have a variety of choices for your wedding celebration: Hawaiian, classical, contemporary, pop, jazz, reggae, rock and roll, big band, swing, ethnic or country. Most musicians offer song lists, so you can select your favorites in advance. Background music throughout the ceremony adds beauty and harmony to the spoken words. If you are planning a romantic dinner or reception afterwards, music is the perfect enhancement to the festivities. You can either continue with the musicians from the ceremony or consider a different group to liven up the celebration. A disc jockey or a live band is great for encouraging guests to dance. AUBREY HORD PHOTOGRAPHY LLC You may want to invite some of Maui’s talented performers for true Hawaiian flare: a conch shell blower, hula dancers, Tahitian drummers, fire knife dancers, a Hawaiian chanter, a slack key guitarist or even an entire hula hålau (hula school) to perform a luau dinner show. Many of Maui’s talented musicians have recorded professional CDs, a wonderful keepsake to commemorate the evening.
