Registration is NOW OPEN for the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention. This year's promises to be the biggest and best
yet as we celebrate 50 years of The Flute Society of Washington and 30 years of our 2-day Flute Event. Our guest
artist this year will be low flutes specialist Peter Sheridan, joined by pianist Bora Lee. There are events for all ages
and levels of flutists - competitions, concerts, masterclasses, lectures, workshops, flute choir reading sessions, and
more. Plus, one of the largest flute exhibit halls of any event in the country. New this year is the Jazz Cabaret and
Buffet on Saturday evening, February 20, with renowned jazz flutist Ali Ryerson.
Registration can be done online or onsite, however preregistering will save you $5. Preregistration cost is $55 Full/
Adult and $45 Student, plus $20/$10 FSW dues if not current; onsite registration is $60 Full/Adult and $50
Student, plus $20/$10 FSW dues if not current. Non-flutist parent/guest passes can be purchased for $10 each, and
boxed lunches can be purchased for Saturday and/or Sunday. Don't forget to register early for the very popular
Guest Artist Breakfast, with Peter Sheridan, on Sunday, February 21. Hotel reservations can be made at a special
rate of $94 plus tax per night by following the link on the Convention General Information page at www.fsw.net.
Innovative and creative flutist, performer and teacher, Peter Sheridan has collaborated with some of the
world’s leading composers, commissioning more than fifty works for the various flutes. A passionate specialist on
the Low Flutes, he has promoted these instruments in concert and master classes, appearing at the National Flute
Association and British Flute Society conventions, as well as festivals throughout North America and around the
World. An active staff member of the Monash and Melbourne Universities, he directs the flute ensembles, bustling
flute studios, and lectures on American Music. Mr. Sheridan holds degrees and certifications from Mannes College,
University of Arizona, Goldsmith’s College (London), and completed graduate work at UCLA. For more

Saturday Evening Jazz Cabaret Buffet with
Ali Ryerson
An exciting new event has been added to the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention this year! Don't miss the Saturday evening Jazz
Cabaret Buffet, headlined by renowned jazz flutist Ali Ryerson and backed by an outstanding trio of local jazz musicians. A
buffet dinner will be available at a cost of $32 per person. A cash bar will also be available. Please note: purchase of the buffet
is NOT necessary to attend the cabaret. The event will take place on Saturday, February 20 from 7:30 to 9:00 pm.
Preregistration is available for the buffet now at www.fsw.net, but is not required; the buffet may be purchased at Convention
registration, or at the door. Registration for the Convention (flutist or guest) IS REQUIRED to enter the cabaret.
2016 Festival Flute Choir
The festival flute choir is open to all attendees without audition. You MUST be able to attend both rehearsals and
the performance to participate. Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir members should not register for this event
since rehearsals conflict.
This year the Festival Flute choir will premiere a new flute choir competition by Daniel Dorff, commissioned by
the Flute Society of Washington, Inc.
Come and join us by performing in the Flute Fair Festival Flute Choir. This ensemble will perform during the Flute
Fair on Saturday, February 20 and will be directed by George Pope. Rehearsals will be held Friday, February 19
and Saturday, February 20. Participation is open to everyone on space available basis. Registration for the flute fair
is required of all participants and must be completed by February 1 so that you can receive your music ahead of
time. Come and join the fun!

Donate to the FSW Commissioning Fund
In celebration of FSW's 50th year, the Board of Directors has approved a fund to be set up for the purpose
of commissioning new music. We are pleased to announce that our first commission will be a flute
choir work by Daniel Dorff, his first flute choir composition. The work will be premiered by the
Festival Flute Choir at the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention. Subsequent commissions will be
approved by the Board of Directors.
The commission fund will be funded entirely by contributions from FSW members and other interested
parties. Anyone interested in donating can do so on the FSW website, at https://fsw.wildapricot.org/NewMusic-Commissioning-Fund
If you wish to contribute by check, please mail your check to FSW treasurer, 42925 Edgewater Street,
Chantilly, VA 20152. All donors will be acknowledged in the program book at the Mid-Atlantic Flute
Convention. Contributions can be made anonymously, and/or in honor/memory of someone, if so desired.
Contributions will be gratefully accepted at any time during the year, as this is an ongoing project. Any

The University of Virginia Flute Forum
The McIntire Department of Music is pleased to present the
inaugural University of Virginia Flute Forum.

The UVA Flute Forum is a day-long flute festival which
features masterclasses, workshops, and recitals. All events are
free and open to the public.
This year's Forum will feature Aaron Goldman, Principal
Flutist of the National Symphony Orchestra, alongside guest
artists Angela Kelly, Abby Simoneau, and UVA faculty
member Kelly Sulick. Attendees are encouraged to bring their
flutes to participate in a flute choir reading session, led by
conductor Kyle Ruempler. The full schedule is available at

The JMU Flute Club and the School of Music
present FLUTE FLING! 2016 on Saturday, March
19, 2016. This event is a fun and informative day of
flute activities presented and sponsored by the
students of the JMU Flute Club and geared towards
flutists of all ages, teachers, band directors, and flute
aficionados!
This year’s FLUTE FLING! will feature JILL
FELBER, flute, and DIANNE FRAZER, piano, in
recital and masterclasses. FLUTE FLING! will also
feature a variety of workshops, a flute choir reading
session and performance for all participants,
masterclasses, and performances by JMU Flute
Professor Beth Chandler, the JMU Flute Choir, and

Music and the beautiful, state-of-the-art JMU Forbes Center for the Performing Arts

Woodbridge Flute Choir Eighth Concerto Competition
The Woodbridge Flute Choir is sponsoring its eighth concerto
competition and scholarship for high school students aged 14-18. The
winner will receive a $500 scholarship award and will perform the
concerto with the Woodbridge Flute Choir at its Friday, March 11,
2016 8:00PM concert at Old Town Hall in Fairfax, VA and the
Sunday, March 13, 2016 3:00 PM concert at Greenwich Presbyterian
Church, 15305 Vint Hill Rd, Nokesville, VA 20181.
The required repertoire is one movement of any flute concerto that has been arranged and published for flute
solo and flute choir. The entry deadline is
January 6, 2016.

Faire on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Old Dominion University. Our guest
artist is Swedish flute soloist, Goran Marcusson. The Competition for
Elementary, Middle School and High School is on Monday, February 29,
2016. College and Adult Amatuer competition is Saturday, March 5. Prizes are
awarded in each division. Come join us for an amazing day of Recitals, Master
Classes, Workshops, and Flute Choir Performances. Hear Virginia Symphony
flutists, Military Flutists, College faculty and other amazing local talent. This
