ZÜtÑxä|Çx Daviess County Public Schools staff newsletter March 14-18, 2016 DCPS to host Town Hall The Daviess County Public Schools district will host Kentucky Education Commissioner Stephen Pruitt as part of a series of Town Hall Meetings scheduled across the state to give people an opportunity to share thoughts, concerns and suggestions about school success. Feedback shared at these meetings will be used by the Kentucky Department of Education in developing a new and more effective accountability system. Congress recently reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, now known as the Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA. ESSA shifts much of the oversight and responsibility for schools from the federal government to the state, including how accountability is determined and how to define and improve low-performing schools. Congratulations, Donna Richard! Donna Richard, food services manager at Meadow Lands Elementary School, has been named Kentucky’s 2015-16 Manager of the Year by the School Nutrition Association (SNA). She will be recognized at the annual Kentucky SNA conference in Covington on June 21 and will receive a plaque and paid attendance to the SNA conference in San Antonio as she advances in competition for Southeast Region and national honors. Donna holds SNA certification in school nutrition and has served as a food services manager for 12 years at MLES. Before that, she was a cook/baker for five years at Daviess County Middle School. Donna has also demonstrated a gift for nurturing leadership skills in others. Three members of her staff have advanced to managerial positions at other schools. Donna is actively involved in the DCPS in-house manager training program. “She really helps others to be successful by teaching and empowering them,” Lisa said. “She leads a great team and it shows by their hard work, great customer service, wonderful and well-presented meals and their thirst for knowledge.” Donna is committed to providing meals that are as delicious as they are nutritious. Foundation for DCPS news and updates The Foundation for DCPS sends BIG thanks to the DCPS staff members who worked at the Exploration Station booth at the Home and Garden Show earlier this month. Everyone had a great time meeting new friends and telling our community about the Exploration Station! Pictured above is Teresa Howard from Meadow Lands. Audubon, Country Heights, East View, Meadow Lands, Sorgho and Whitesville elementary schools have signed up for summer visits and activities with the Exploration Station bus. The Exploration Station, presented by Specialty Foods Group (SFG), will be introduced to our community on May 20 at Friday After 5. Books will be collected at that time to stock the shelves of the bus so start now in gathering up children’s books in good condition to donate this program. Sponsorships are still available for as little as $500, which pays for transportation expenses (gas, driver, etc.) to allow the bus to visit a school once a week during the summer; or $1,000 for weekly summer visits and monthly after-school visits during the school year. Corporate sponsorships are also available and include promotion for businesses and organizations. A Lesson for Life DCPS Food Services Director Lisa Sims visited students in Kelly Murphy’s classroom at Southern Oaks Elementary School last week to celebrate “I Love to Read” Day. Lisa shared the Dr. Seuss classic, “Green Eggs and Ham” – and took the opportunity to remind students of the message in that book about trying new foods, which might become a new favorite! Kelly said her students really enjoyed Lisa’s visit ... but it was Lisa who received the greatest reward when she was overwhelmed with a “group hug” when it was time to leave! Congratulations, Karen Feldhaus! Karen Feldhaus was named Speech Coach of the Year for the Bowling Green Region during an awards ceremony on March 12 in which the Daviess County High School speech team was recognized for advancing to the semi-final level of competition. This was the 17th state tournament appearance for the team under Karen’s leadership. The team entered the tournament as the regional runner-up Karen Feldhaus with 14 students competing in 22 events. Karen’s work and dedication are preparing students with skills that are essential to success in the workplace, including the ability to work together, develop a strong work ethic and to share opinions in an informed and respectful manner. “You can’t get much more ‘real world’ than that,” Karen said. Thank you, Karen, for your commitment to students and for setting a positive example for all! Sawyer James Craig arrived Feb. 19, weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces, and measuring 21 inches in length. The baby was also welcomed by great-aunts Cindy Ward (CVMS) and Jennifer Humphrey (SOES). Proud parents are Holley and James Craig. Heather Avery (MLES) has announced the arrival of Sadie Mae Avery on Feb. 23. The baby weighed in at 6 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 19 inches long upon arrival. Maintenance and Construction Update This monthly report is provided by the DCPS Maintenance department. Our staff remains committed to ensuring comfortable, safe and attractive environments for teaching and learning. Daviess County High School Very little change in the past month due to weather. Phase 2 work is nearly complete except for weather-dependent work David Shutt and a few punch list items. Band, orchestra, chorus and drama classes are all moved into their spaces; the auditorium work by the contractor is complete. Our crews have minor repair work to do on seating, drapery cleaning and sound system reinstallation. Work to be concluded includes: n Exterior insulation and finishing system (EIFS) on upper exterior level of band room n Small amount of concrete paving n Dirt work in front of band room n Small amount of exterior painting n Parapet wall coping we decided to reconfigure our system to accommodate a standard transformer so that Kenergy would maintain it. In order to do this a few changes are necessary: n A new main switch that will accommodate a neutral conductor n A concrete pad to mount the new transformer on, built to Kenergy specifications n Because we cannot locate the transformer 25 feet away from the building, a concrete masonry unit wall must be built around the transformer pad Kenergy has formally offered to provide us a standard transformer at their cost, and take over possession and maintenance of another transformer near the Agriculture wing. They will install the new transformer and dispose of the old one. This will eliminate all ownership and maintenance of large transformers at DCHS. At the current time, we expect expenses to include: n Transformer, approximately $10,000 n DeZyne Electric will provide the new switch, conductors, conduit, and permits – $27,000 n Demolition of old pad, construction of new pad and protection wall – $10,000 WLES Erosion Issue Hanson Testing and Engineering completed two test borings at the West Louisville Elementary School site on March 8 after several weather and site condition related delays. Acura Engineering will use the results of these borings to aid in the design of a sheet piling retaining wall to stabilize and restore the creek bank. DCHS Transformer Issue Some time ago, it was observed that one of the main transformers at DCHS, one that is owned by DCPS, was leaking coolant oil. Though several attempts were made by engineers from Kenergy to determine the source of the leak, in the end it was agreed that the leak was coming from the bottom of the unit, so it could not be seen and probably not be fixed onsite. This transformer was hurriedly changed in the summer of 2002 just before school was to resume. It was a rebuilt transformer that we were lucky to find on short notice. This transformer is a somewhat “oddball” type that goes back to the original construction when it probably served only large equipment like chillers, circulation pumps, etc., so it didn’t need a neutral conductor. Because of its non-standard configuration, Kenergy did not want to own it. AHS to present ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown’ Students in Allie Head’s sophomore English class are completing a service learning project based on their own passions and interests. One group has decided to conduct a book drive to collect reading materials to be donated to Kids Need to Read, Books for Africa, Operation Paperback and Book Ends. Send books through the courier to Allie Head at DCHS or for large amounts, contact her to schedule pickup – allie.head@daviess.kyschools.us AHS-BMS Joint Festival Concert The annual Apollo High School / Burns Middle School joint festival concert is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17, in the main gymnasium at AHS. The performance is free and open to the public. The concert will feature the combined seventhand eighth-grade bands of Burns Middle School, the Apollo Symphonic Band and the Apollo Wind Ensemble. Highlights of the performance will include “Incantation and Dance” by John Barnes Chance and “Nobles of the Mystic Shrine” by John Phillip Sousa, performed by the AHS Symphonic Band; and “Contre Qui, Rose” by Morten Lauridson and “Occident and Orient” by Camille-SaintSaens, performed by the Wind Ensemble. Congratulations, Ryan Poirier! Ryan Poirier Ryan Poirier has been named head boys’ soccer coach at Apollo High School. Ryan, who teaches sixth- and seventhgrade language arts and social studies at College View Middle School, said, “I am excited and optimistic about the future of this program.” For the past three years, he has served as head junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach at AHS. The Apollo High School Performing Arts Department will present “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” in the AHS auditorium. Show times are 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 18-19, with a matinee at 1 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and are available at the door. However, children in grades K-5 may receive free admission with a completed coloring sheet and paid adult admission. Coloring sheets are available in the Apollo High School office during regular school hours. The performance is directed by April Berry. DCHS presents Beauty & the Beast The Daviess County High School Performing Arts Academy will present Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” in the school’s newly renovated auditorium. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students and are available at the door. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 24-26; with a matinee at 2 p.m. Saturday. The matinee performance includes a special “Be Our Guest” party at 12:30 p.m. Children are invited to participate in games and activities with characters from the play. There is no additional cost for this event. The show includes the well-loved songs “Be Our Guest,” “Gaston,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and many more. The performance is directed by Candy Miller.
