2010-11
Principal Daniel B. Frank
Parker pulsates. Energy. Imagination. Creativity. Our students and
teachers, parents and alumni, friends and visitors illuminate the many
paths toward learning, insight and action that are hallmarks of a
Parker education.
And what a year 2010–11 was for Parker. We engaged with ideas and
perspectives generated from our students and faculty, as well as those
offered by visiting educators—local, national and international—all in
the spirit of “bringing the outside in and the inside out.” Among the educational events that
brought ideas and people to our school:
n
here is the center of the universe? What came before the big bang? Is there intelligent
W
life elsewhere? These were just a few questions explored by Parker’s Robert A. Pritzker
Visiting Scientist•Inventor•Engineer in Residence Dr. Edward W. “Rocky” Kolb, the Arthur
Holly Compton Distinguished Service Professor of Astronomy & Astrophysics and chair of
the University of Chicago’s Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics. Dr. Kolb worked with
students in their science classes, presented a Morning Ex and met with science faculty
in the fall, then returned in the spring to continue his work with students and faculty and
address Parker parents and the extended community in a Nightviews lecture.
n
xamining a subject relevant to all parents, our 13th Annual Francine C. Rosenberg
E
Memorial Lecture Series featured Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot, a MacArthur Prize winner
and the Emily Hargroves Fisher Professor of Education at Harvard University. This noted
sociologist explored the text and subtext, the substance and symbolism, of the “Essential
Conversation”: the parent-teacher dialogue that takes place in schools across our country
an estimated 100 million times annually.
n
In our annual partnership with the Chicago Humanities Festival, Parker hosted more than
twice the number of public events we hosted last year, drawing thousands of people into
the school. The festival brings together some of the finest novelists, scholars, musicians
and artists to share the riches of the humanities with a wider audience—a perfect match
for a place like Parker.

In each of the school’s divisions, our students collaborated with international partners,
enhancing their classroom learning by expanding their global awareness.

Francis W. Parker School
n
The Lower School continued its relationship with one of our sister schools, the
Tuskegee International School in Ghana, West Africa. Parker students made coin
purses and dolls and provided books, bookmarks and bags for Tuskegee’s 220
students, who responded with letters and drawings for their Chicago peers. Tuskegee
Founder and Director Charles H. Yarfoh strengthened the relationship by visiting
Parker this year.
n
For the third year, Middle School students and faculty partnered with H20 Schoolto-School, raising $2,000 to pay for a toilet, water fountain and sink at the Nationale
Alexandre Petion de Ranthionoby School in Haiti and at the River Bank Primary
School in Sudan. In an era of difficult and sometimes overwhelming news, it is
encouraging and optimistic for our students to accomplish a goal, radically improve the
lives of others and demonstrate that focus, energy and creativity can transform the world.
n
Upper School students explored pedagogical connections between Parker and the
school founded by Japanese educator Tsunesaburo Makiguchi in their Schools
Across Borders, Schools Across Time course. In the fall, a delegation of Japanese
administrators and educators from Makiguchi’s network visited Parker, and in the
spring, Parker hosted an international education conference, in partnership with
DePaul University. The event celebrated the work of Colonel Parker, John Dewey and
Makiguchi, whose ideas were influenced by Parker and Dewey nearly a century ago.
n
The year was also a successful one for Parker’s Model United Nations Team. More
than 80 Upper School students participated as delegates in three conferences: the St.
Ignatius Model United Nations conference in Chicago, UCLA’s Model UN conference
in Los Angeles and the Rome International Model United Nations conference.
Principal Daniel B. Frank
Artistic highlights of the year included delightful performances by our Lower School
violin and cello ensembles and the Intermediate, Middle and Upper School Orchestras.
Our Upper School jazz band students were the first to participate in the Chicago Jazz
Orchestra’s new “Side By Side” educational initiative, which provides developing
musicians a unique opportunity to perform with seasoned professionals. Upper School
student dancers shared their developing talents in movement in two performances of the
Parker Dance Showcase—a testament to the growing interest in this program since our
studio formally opened in 2009. The year was also marked by the enthusiastic launching
of our new Middle School band program, which has now expanded into the Upper School.
Parker’s athletics program thrived, with more than 65 percent of students in 6th–12th
grades participating on a team. Among these student athletes was Jonny Levin ’11, a
four-year member of Parker’s cross country and track teams. Closing his senior year in
historic fashion, Jonny finished seventh at the state cross country meet and, later in the
spring, he won the track and field two-mile race in 9:30, becoming the first track and
field state champion in Parker’s history.
In the science arena, our Upper School Robotics Team received its second $5,000
NASA continuing grant, and the Hoop House Gardens Project was an interesting
cross-divisional effort. Built by the Middle and Upper School Environmental Clubs with
resources donated by the class of 2010 as their graduation gift, these mini greenhouses
provided an opportunity for growing projects in the science curriculum at all grade levels
and gave students a stronger connection to the sources of the food they eat.
I am grateful to all who participate in and contribute to the life of our school, and I look
forward to working on behalf of our students as we look to the future.

board of trustees president
Jonathan L. Marks
I am pleased to report that Francis W. Parker School completed the
2010–11 academic year in fiscally sound condition, operating with
a balanced budget of more than $27 million. The entire community
has much to be proud of. The Board worked collaboratively with
the administration, faculty and staff. Volunteers continued a long
tradition of unwavering commitment to the school. Students thrived
in a rich environment of academic and intellectual rigor infused
with Parker’s ethos of character building and sense of responsibility.
As we consider the past year, we should appreciate the remarkable qualities of our
community and all we have accomplished together.
Parker families continued to demonstrate their understanding of the school’s needs
through their high level of participation in our Parent Annual Giving Program. As we
hope everyone knows, tuition and fees cover only 85% of the revenue the school needs
annually to educate each Parker student; we make up the difference through charitable
donations—essentially a tax-deductible portion of everyone’s tuition. It is critical that all
members of our community participate in the program at whatever level they are capable.
Last year we experienced record participation by 81 percent of Parker families and the
most dollars ever contributed to the program. My thanks to all the Class Callers, as well as
the 2010–11 PAGP Co-Chairs: Kelly Cassidy, Deborah Schrayer Karmin and Matt Moog.
I am also grateful for the hard work of the parents who contributed to the success of the
year’s most important fundraising event, the Cooke & the Colonel Scholarship Dinners.
I offer heartfelt appreciation to the event’s co-chairs, Jenni Gordon and Donna Wilkens.
Thanks to their efforts and those of the other volunteers, we raised more than $450,000.
We also continue to make significant progress in the Founding Our Second Century
capital campaign. Having completed improvements to our facility, we must now focus on
the critical task of building our endowment. To maintain the kind of school we want—a
school dedicated to the principles of a progressive education, a school that reflects the
socioeconomic makeup of the society our children will enter upon graduation, a school
that appreciates what each individual brings to the community as a whole—endowment
is essential. A sizable endowment would allow us to advance many critical needs, among
them keeping Parker affordable; maintaining racial, ethnic and economic diversity;
and augmenting an already amazing educational experience with more programs and
resources. We are now within $15 million of reaching our goal. My sincere gratitude to
the co-chairs of the FOSC Campaign and all the volunteers and staff whose tireless work
has allowed us to raise nearly $75 million (as of 12/31/11).
In contemplating Parker’s future, both short-term and long-term, I hope we can count on
this foundation as the starting point for even greater commitment and support from our
community. The successful lives of our alumni illustrate the success of our efforts. May
we continue to grow strong.

By Carter and Jeff Sharfstein, Parker parents
With daughters in JK and 2nd grade, we know
we’re likely to be part of this school for the next 14
years. We live in a very large city, and we love being
part of such a warm and supportive community
where we all—children, parents, teachers—are
accountable for our actions.
We’re so excited our kids go to school here, but
we’re less concerned about where the school is
today than we are about where it will be 10 years
from now. The Parker community has done a
fantastic job, and helping drive the school to its next level motivated us to get involved.
The school makes it easy; there are many different committees, events and areas to
consider, and they help you find an area that matches your skill set.
For us, the Founding Our Second Century Campaign is critically important to the future
of our school. As we got involved in the Campaign, we were startled to learn that the
endowments at the top schools in the country—and we consider Parker to be one of
them—are significantly larger than Parker’s. Those other schools have funds that give
them the freedom to grow and develop. Building our endowment to where it should be
will give the school the flexibility to evolve.
We strongly believe the school must continue to build diversity. There are many kids that
have the intellectual skill set and the emotional desire and drive to thrive at Parker, but
they don’t have the financial resources. Building our Scholarship Endowment benefits not
only those kids but also the Parker community by ensuring that our school reflects the
broader community around us.
We’ve taken the approach that giving to the school is an investment in our children’s
education, in their future. We’ve always been firm believers that it is important to
contribute to a place where you receive so much in return.
This is only our second year at the school, and our parents have also gotten involved.
They’ve experienced the nurturing atmosphere, and they understand the growth needs of
a positive school environment. They see, as we do, that it’s like a second family.
It’s a great feeling when someone asks you where your kids go to school, and you say
“Parker,” and you feel proud to say that. When you can give to a school as a whole,
everybody benefits.

2010-11 Annual Report 15
Founding our second century campaign
During the past decade, the Parker community has worked hard to improve the
physical facility and secure the financial stability of our organization while maintaining
the highest quality education available. In undertaking the Founding Our Second
Century Campaign in 2004, our goal was to raise $89 million for physical plant
improvements and endowment growth. We have raised more than $74 million
toward that goal.
As we enter the final phase of the Campaign, our focus is on building an endowment
that will ensure the school’s long-term financial sustainability. The future of our school
will require an endowment that is well beyond the $28 million we currently have. This
campaign must provide Parker with an endowment of at least $52 million, which
would allow the school to meet minimum standards recommended by the National
Association of Independent Schools by having an endowment that is two times its
current annual operating budget.
More importantly, a properly funded endowment will ensure the continued realization of
important Parker values: diversity and innovation. The endowment supports the people
and programs that are fundamental to the school, directly funding financial assistance
for families in need, faculty endowment and educational programs.
The Board of Trustees, the Campaign committees and the administration are deeply
grateful to the Parker community, especially students and faculty, for their patience and
support throughout the process.
This list recognizes all donors who have made a commitment to the Founding Our
Second Century Campaign between July 1, 2003 and June 30, 2011.

William R. Duffy Memorial Scholarship Fund
William Duffy was a rare and gifted teacher who taught English at Parker beginning
in 1975, inspiring three decades of students to love literature and writing. He was an
impressive, loving and intelligent man who his students and colleagues remember for
his passion for teaching and for finding ways to allow each person to see what he saw:
the power of imaginative thinking that lies within each of us. To honor the legacy of this
great teacher, the school established an endowment in his name following his death in
2002. Parker allocates all contributions to this endowment to the Scholarship Fund.
This list recognizes contributions made between March 1, 2002 and June 30, 2011.

The Ellen Liebman Principal’s Opportunity Fund
for Educational Enrichment and Innovation
During her 12 years as a Parker parent, Ellen Liebman was instrumental in many activities at
the school, including serving as a trustee and member of the Board’s Executive Committee
and co-chair of the Parents’ Association, among other roles. To honor Ellen’s legacy, this
fund provides the school with financial resources that enable Parker to initiate uncharted
educational opportunities by providing support for new programs. The fund permits teachers
and students to meet important and timely challenges for educational engagement and
personal and programmatic growth. Grants from the fund are intended for one to three years,
facilitating future opportunities to sustain an ongoing stream of ideas and initiatives that will aid
students who are ready and able to pursue learning at an accelerated rate or in greater depth.
This list recognizes contributions made between March 1, 2002 and June 30, 2011.

Anita McCormick Blaine Planned Giving Society
At the beginning of our second century, Parker created the Anita McCormick Blaine
Planned Giving Society. A planned gift provides the opportunity for donors to help
secure the school’s future while also incurring tax benefits either during their lives or
through their estates. Blaine, the school’s first benefactor, endowed Parker with the
land on which the school currently stands and served as a trustee for the first 30 years.
Her outstanding commitment is echoed by many parents, parents emeriti, alumni and
friends who have helped ensure the school’s future by including Parker in their wills
and estate plans.
