Jonathan Burke Appointed New President
Jonathan Burke, artist, arts professor, and veteran arts administrator, has been chosen as the next president of Laguna
College of Art + Design. Chairman of the Board Stevan Gromet announced the appointment, “We, the trustees, look
forward to working with Jonathan and supporting him in his new leadership position.” Burke, who began in his new
position on July 1, was formerly Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Fine Arts.
President Burke was selected from a field of more than 50 candidates in a national search that began last fall when
Dennis Power announced his retirement as president. Jonathan, who holds an MFA from Boston University, has been
with LCAD since 1980, and has had a powerful influence in shaping the programs and character of the College with its
emphasis on figurative painting and growing commitment in the area of visual communications.

In describing his plans for the future of the College, Burke says, “I am excited about becoming LCAD’s next president. As
an artist and educator, I deeply care about the college and the cultural significance of educating the next generation of
artists and designers. As an academic leader, I bring an understanding of the college’s unique culture with its focus on
students, academic rigor and strong community participation.”
LCAD’s Golden Gala
On September 15 LCAD launched a year-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Laguna
Beach School of Art, from which the college evolved. The gala evening was held at Seven-Degrees in Laguna Beach
and attended by community and philanthropic leaders.
Attendees had the opportunity to hear newly appointed President Jonathan Burke share his vision for the future of
LCAD. “In 1961 the Laguna Beach School of Art was founded with the mission to provide community art education of
the highest quality in the region,” stated Burke. “Fifty years latter our mission is still relevant. What’s changed is that
the definition of ‘community’ has expanded. At LCAD art education continues to meet the intrinsic need to observe,

President’s Message
Dear Friends,
It is indeed an honor to be chosen as LCAD’s 12th President and to be part of this remarkable community.
With our 50th Anniversary banner now on three campuses, I marvel at how far we have come. I also believe
that there is virtually no limit on what we can accomplish
Our founders would certainly look with pride at LCAD today. The school began with a mission to “provide
community art education of the highest quality in the region.” Fifty years later, this mission still resonates
with the conviction that art is a positive force that can change society for the better.
Today, LCAD thrives because of our exceptional faculty and staff and the ability to blend honored traditions
with new technology and 21st century sensibilities. As a teacher here for more than 30 years, I’ve seen firsthand the kind of
dedication and collegiality that makes LCAD a very special environment.
Students from 27 states and 16 countries are currently enrolled and I am delighted to report that there are more students, more
classes, and more full-time faculty then at any time in our history.
I think you’ll agree that this milestone year is a perfect time to celebrate the past, consider the present and look to the future.
A Strategic Plan for LCAD is currently in process and I look forward to sharing our goals and aspirations with you in the months
ahead.
Thank you again for your involvement and generosity. Together we will see LCAD’s star shine even brighter.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Burke
President

Students Turn Trash into Treasure
Students Hannah Cosner and Tierney Moses have partnered with the OC Arts Center in Dana Point, taking on the
title of the Program Managers and organizing community classes. They have created their own style of teaching and
developed art projects that focus on sustainability. “We know that now more than ever there is a need to bring attention back to the preservation of the planet, and we want our art to address that need,” said Cosner. Their first activity
debuted at the recent 50th birthday celebration for the city of San Juan Capistrano. They chose to incorporate recycled
materials into an art project for both children and families to participate in. “We collected our own recycled materials as well as receiving donations from OCAC supporters, Green Cube Gallery in Laguna Beach and San Clemente Art
Supply,” continued Cosner. The duo also partnered with the Surfrider Foundation sculpting a “Tidal Wave of Trash”
collected along Orange County beaches that was unveiled on International Surfing Day and featured in the Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade.
Rodin’s Figures Grace Gallery
This summer, LCAD was the first Orange County venue to proudly exhibit 14 figure sculptures by French artist Auguste Rodin (18401917). The exhibition also included a 10-piece display of the lost wax casting process of Rodin’s “Sorrow.” It was organized and made
possible by the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation who owned approximately 750 large and small Rodin sculptures. Besides giving away
450 works from the collection to over 70 museums, the Foundation circulates traveling exhibitions on Rodin that have been seen in more
than140 venues throughout the world. These two Rodin loan groups were selected to complement LCAD’s figurative emphasis in the
Drawing and Painting major and Sculpture. This exhibition was a rare opportunity for students, faculty and the public to interact with
Rodin’s art for two months and typifies LCAD’s commitment to excellence in the arts.
Visual Tales from Éire and England
Thirteen students traveled to Ireland and England over the summer, with Art Professor Betty Shelton and
Visiting Artist Don Lagerberg. The tour began in Dublin, exploring the National Gallery of Ireland, the Irish Museum of
Modern Art and the Hugh Lane Gallery. They had the opportunity to see a wide range of art from the Book of Kells, Caravaggio, Vermeer, Velazquez and Rubens, along with modern masters such as Diego Rivera, Frieda Kahlo, Antonio Mancini
and Francis Bacon’s studio. There were excursions to Glendalough, and Newgrange along with enjoying traditional Irish
music and dance. The group then flew to England, where they traveled to see the Birmingham Museum, Stratford-Upon-
4
Avon’s Shakespeare’s Theater, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, and Oxford’s outstanding Ashmolean Museum, where they studied the drawings of John Ruskin.
After making a home base in London, the group toured the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, British Museum, National Gallery, and the
National Portrait Gallery. The final excursion was to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. All of these experiences will culminate in an art exhibit in January.
Art of the Portrait
Fine Art Professors Hope Railey and Betty Shelton, along with students Trevor Christensen, Enrique Escobedo and Monique
Johnson attended the “Art of the Portrait Conference” this spring in Atlanta, Georgia. All three students were given scholarships to attend the event, by the Portrait Society of America. Everyday was filled with opportunities to attend classes,
and watch portrait demonstrations by renowned artists, such as David Leffel, Michael Shane Neal, Anthony Ryder, and
Mary Whyte. There were also presentations by Dean Mitchell , Daniel Greene, Everett Kinstler, and Burton Silverman. This
convention was not only an inspiration to Hope and Betty, but it was life changing for the students.
Game Art Partnership with USC
LCAD and the University of Southern California combined forces and were hailed for having the most visually stunning title submitted to industry at Demo
Day. Students formed teams and spent a year creating games from scratch. Twelve USC students provided programming acumen, and 21 LCAD students
provided art and design talent, along with the help of sound effects and voice-over actors. On Demo Day, they unveiled their creation to an audience full of
video game developers from the biggest companies around the world. The goal of the program is to ship a title, giving the members of the team a full year
of work experience on a released game upon graduation.
Game Art Chair Sandy Appleoff said, “Creating bridges and partnerships between schools has been one of the jewels of the job as founder of the Game Art
major at LCAD. In 2008 we started our first development partnership with UCI’s Game Design class, and from there an agreement has been placed with
NHTV in Breda Netherlands.”
GamePipe, USC’s game design program, is ranked the No. 1 college video game development program by the Princeton
Review. “It was an honor to be a part of such a great team and I am glad that our game was so well received,” said LCAD
senior and project co-director Wesley Martin. “I hope that people can have fun playing it and enjoy its unique look and feel.
We would love to eventually see Unchained as a finished title. For now we have the best possible portfolio for entering the
video game industry - we shipped a game!”
Dennis & Leslie Power Library Opens
Major remodel and expansion made possible by generous donors.
Where there used to be automobile part racks and inaccessible boxes of magazines, there are now well-lit movable bookshelves in the newly renovated
and expanded art library. Library Director Jennifer Martinez-Wormser described the old library looked like a “cluttered yard sale” and had shelving from an
automobile parts manufacturer. “The library had appropriated one little cubby room and closet after another,” said Martinez-Wormser, “so we had this little
warren of cubbies all cobbled together. Because we are an art school, we have big books. We had long ago outgrown the space.” Thanks to major fundraising efforts, the dream of a new and improved Dennis and Leslie Power Library became a reality this summer. At the ribbon cutting ceremony, President
Jonathan Burke thanked many of those who were responsible for completion of the project particularly “a number of LCAD’s trustees and members of the
community who are gracious and willing to support our educational mission.”
The remodeled library is now 600 square feet larger. New features include bigger tables with more chairs, a custom-made portfolio valet, and a small group
study/meeting room. Massive electronic bookshelves move together and apart on electronic tracks. These shelves provide twice as much book storage
space. “The reality is, while there are a lot of wonderful things online, there’s an assumption that everything is online. That’s simply not true. Because our
students are artists, they are a unique population.”
The new library is the first of several significant enhancements planned for the main campus. A new gallery for professional and student art is next.
Next Generation Paint Out
In conjunction with this year’s Plein Air Painting Invitational theme of sustainability, the Next Generation Paint Out was
designed to cultivate the next generation of plein air painters. This event also aimed to deepen Laguna Beach’s reputation as
an arts destination by giving the community and guests the opportunity to view the work of young artists from the college.
Participating students had just three hours to create a work of art at Heisler Park in Laguna Beach. These works were then
hung at LCAD to be judged by Mr. Jean Stern, Executive Director of The Irvine Museum. The first place winner took home
the prestigious $500 Laguna Plein Air Painters Association Scholarship Award. Second and third place winners also received
cash awards, and the top three had their works hung at Laguna Art Museum during the October 15 Collectors’ Soirée.
Summer Spectacular
It was a busy summer for LCAD students, faculty and alumni…
n For the 2nd year, the Orange County Fair featured artwork representing all majors and programs. More than 73 pieces of student art received countywide exposure along the 40’ wall in the visual arts exposition center.
n Congratulations go out to the alumni and staff juried into this year’s Festival of Arts: Michael Jacques, John Eagle, Elizabeth McGhee, Andrew Myers,
Kristen Whalen, and Philip Womack.
n MFA Thesis Exhibitions were held at Arena 1 in Santa Monica in June and July. The exhibition was a visual statement representing the culmination of
each students’ graduate painting research and contained work that centered around their particular conceptual objectives.
n Faculty and students from Communications University of China, our partner university in Beijing, met with administrators to develop potential collabora-
tions. Video games are as popular in China and they are in the US.
n Graphic Design Chair, Catharin Eure and Dean Jack Lew attended the National Interscholastic Championships held at Salt Creek in Dana Point to pro-
vide interested high school and collegiate students with information on the Action Sports courses offered at LCAD.

Great Donors Matter
A month or so ago, shortly after joining the staff at LCAD,
I attended the college’s New Parents & Family Welcome
Reception It was my first opportunity to meet a number
of faculty members and trustees of the college and to
mingle with families of freshman from all over the country.
As family members spoke of “their freshman” with
enthusiasm, pride and hope, it became clear that our
incoming cohort was an eclectic bunch, with varied
interests and experiences. One thing I heard noted
again and again was that LCAD’s intimate setting and low
student-to-faculty ratio were key factors in influencing the
decision to choose our college. These family members felt
assured that freshman here begin the journey toward a great arts education with
little risk of getting lost in the crowd.
As LCAD celebrates its 50th Anniversary and continues to grow and expand in new
and exciting directions, it takes a combination of talent, commitment and financial
resources to retain the hands-on, personal attention to each student that makes
such a difference in the quality of an arts education.
The talent and commitment are here in spades! What is needed now are the
resources that your generous, tax-deductible contributions provide.
Please send us your gift today in the envelope attached. Whatever the amount, it
will be warmly received and deeply appreciated!
