Two contemporary and comfortable homes
at Durack were officially opened by seven
people who will live there. Queensland
Minister for Disability Services Tracy Davis
and CEO David Barbagallo were on
hand to officiate.
When devastating floodwaters hit in
January 2011, Endeavour Foundation
moved quickly to ensure the safe
evacuation of seven people with a disability
from their long-time riverside home
at Goodna. The homes in Durack were
fast-tracked, after the Goodna house
was ruined by floodwaters reaching the
second floor. “In replacing the damaged

able to build better, modern homes
which will support social inclusion,”
Mr Barbagallo said.
The CEO also joined ten soon-to-be
residents and local MP Anne Maddern to
officially open three new four-bedroom
houses at Maryborough in the Wide Bay
region. These spacious homes overlook a
eucalypt forest, and the gardens double
as home to a laconic mob of kangaroos.
The five houses were built at a cost of
$1.066 million and $1.2 million respectively,
including land, and are part of the ‘At Home

With Choices’ project. Houses with fewer
bedrooms cater for more individual choice
and provide a great deal of scope for
people with a disability who are keen
to develop independent living skills.
For people who’ve lived in larger
residentials, the move to a house
with two or three other tenants
has been life-changing. We

Satisfying year
but more to do
The new houses we have just opened
in Maryborough and Durack, near
Brisbane bear testimony to the year
that we’ve had.
They might look like nothing more
than four walls and a roof but, within
each house, people are living with
greater choice. They are choosing
where and with whom they live,
and how they lead their daily life. In
short, residents are living with more
independence.
It’s incredibly satisfying to make
such progress but this is just another
step along the way. The same can
be said about the situation with the
National Disability Scheme (NDIS).
The push to introduce the NDIS has
moved forward over the last twelve
months and Endeavour Foundation
should be congratulated for its role
in leading the way. It’s good to know
that CEO David Barbagallo is at the
forefront of that campaign.
However, we need further progress in
2013. People with a disability should
be at the centre of the decisionmaking process when it comes to
their own future and that’s what the
NDIS will do. It will empower people
to decide for themselves. We will
continue to be at the heart of the
campaign to make it happen.
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank everyone who has helped
Endeavour Foundation over the last
year. Our volunteers, supporters and
stakeholders are extraordinary and
Endeavour Foundation is lucky to
have such patronage.
People with a disability are being
supported to have the opportunities
of an ordinary life. That’s why
Endeavour Foundation exists.
Best wishes for the festive season.

for Regional Council
More than twenty family members joined Endeavour Foundation’s
Board, CEO David Barbagallo and the Community Advocacy Support
Unit for the inaugural Sydney Regional Council in Parramatta.
The Council provided an opportunity for
Sydney-siders to hear the CEO speak
on the strategic plan, financial health
and direction of Endeavour Foundation,
while Chairman Grant Murdoch
reiterated the Board’s commitment
to supporting the National Disability
Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
Participants heard first hand news
about the roll out of the NDIS from Fran
Vicary, NDIS Advisory Group member
and CEO of the Queenslanders with
Disability Network. One family member
said that “hearing from Fran really brought
home to me the possibilities of the NDIS
in the life of my son”. Mt Druitt Choir also

in attendance. Regional Councils are an
important way for board members and
executive to meet with clients and families
who live distant from head office.
Meanwhile, the Sydney Parent Support

providing information and mutual support
for carers and playing an important role in
advocacy (see photo below).

Live wired
Stakeholders overcame the tyranny of
distance and gained direct access to
CEO David Barbagallo thanks to a series
of live web chats held in October.
This was a chance for people with a
disability, families, carers, staff and
supporters to ask questions about the NDIS.
Discussion covered advocacy ideas, the
federal/state funding mix and a lack of NDIS
money in the federal mid-year budget.
Sessions were planned with easy access in
mind, offering a variety of times and simple

Researching
the future
Research has long been a part
of Endeavour Foundation’s DNA
and there have been a number of
exciting developments in 2012.
Endeavour Foundation is industry
partner for nine projects led by world
class research teams or higher
degree students.
These include a five-year study of
Person-Centred Active Support (La
Trobe University, Victoria), a threeyear study into how young people with
intellectual disability construct their
futures and careers (The University of
Queensland) and a project mapping
gaps between the disability and aged
care sectors (The University of New
England, New South Wales).
Endeavour Foundation continually
seeks to increase the range of
partnerships within the research
community. Our first president,
Professor Sir Fred Schonell, was
an acknowledged expert in special
education and child development
research. Today, the organisation has
a broader scope, but our reason for
supporting research is the same - to
make a difference in the lives of
people with a disability.

Endeavour Foundation Lotteries
Production Coordinator Melissa Beath
faced an unexpected problem when
she called 20 year-old Joshua to say
he’d won a $750,000 dream home.
The youngest ever winner of Endeavour
Foundation Lotteries, Josh was so hard at
work he took some convincing to stop and
take Melissa’s call.
The next day he became the owner of a
magnificent house with four bedrooms,
three lounge rooms, a pool and
subtropical gardens. Soon after, he
appeared on Channel Nine’s A Current
Affair show in an item about Endeavour
Foundation Lotteries.
Before his win, Josh had lived in a studio
apartment so small it would fit inside his
new master bedroom!
Rove & Rave revs up restaurant reviews
Late nights at the keyboard, creative thinking, and a focus on consumer
empowerment has been the right recipe for Team Endeavour.
The group (right) were named proud winners of the inaugural Social Innovation Challenge at
the Queensland NDS Communities of Practice Conference. The challenge was to develop
a prototype product to support daily living or social participation for people with a disability.
Their answer was ‘Rove & Rave’, an interactive, accessible review website which puts people
with a disability in the driver’s seat. ‘Rove & Rave’ shares peer-rated reviews of travel and
entertainment experiences, submitted by people with a disability and carers. The site creates a
platform for people with a disability to share their views as consumers - hopefully driving market
change. Team Endeavour overcame stiff competition from social innovators at FSG Australia,
UnitingCare Community and Centacare Rockhampton, winning $10,000 to develop the website.

Such was the success of the day
that Abigroup is keen to take the

Toy story has happy ending
Imagine the panic for any parent when your children realise
they’ve lost their most-loved toy.
Endeavour Foundation in Townsville came
to the rescue for Jessie who found that she
had dumped in our donation bin five Elmo
toys which are a particular favourite of her

Grant Stevens has been elected President
of Southport Toastmasters Club.
The Burleigh Heads employee adds
this accolade to last year’s ’Toastmaster

when I was voted President, but I felt
proud and so did my family,” Grant said.
He started work with the woodwork
department at Southport in 1985 and
later transferred to Burleigh Heads. In
addition to woodworking, Grant has
been employed in the sewing, mail-out
and packing departments and found
the time to take part in the 2011 Great

Teamwork and dedication
awarded in Sydney
Mt Druitt, Seven Hills and Castle Hill commercial enterprises in
Western Sydney have been lauded for excellence by the local
business community for the second year running.
The three business services were not only named as finalists in the
Western Sydney Awards for Business Excellence, but they were highly
commended by the judges for business excellence in manufacturing.
Their success is in stark contrast to the downturn which has hit much
of the manufacturing sector nationally. All three services have grown
in size and sales revenue, while a number of Sydney supported
employees are enjoying wage increases thanks to skills development,
training and increased productivity.
Western Sydney Commercial Manager Denise Apps acknowledged
the hard work and dedication which made the award possible:
“This validates that working as a team and to the best of our ability,
we are able to achieve the great results we do.”
Geebung eye-opener
for Chinese Ministry
A Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs delegation
has visited Geebung business service in north
Brisbane on a UNICEF - sponsored study tour.
The group were in Australia to study the development
and implementation of social work services, and used
the Geebung visit to gain a detailed understanding of
how the service is run. Business Employment Manager
Angela Burdon said delegates were keen to learn
about pay and employment conditions for supported
employees such as paid holidays.
Commonwealth spokesman Brett Galt-Smith said
the visit was requested by the Australian Government’s
Department of Families, Housing, Community Services
and Indigenous Affairs. It has a memorandum of
understanding for cooperation on social policy and
programs with the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Volunteering in the community
My name is Ziven and I have been receiving support from Endeavour Foundation’s
post-school service.
I was given help to set up an interview at the Salvation Army store at Maroochydore
and spoke to the manager about getting a job there. When I first started, I found it hard
to talk to the other workers and volunteers as I was shy. I was not keen to do any other
job except bagging the jigsaw puzzles. That was three years ago. Now I do lots of
jobs including sorting and pairing the shoes, cutting out price tags, vacuuming, moving
furniture into the shop and going out on the truck to pick up furniture.
Friends: Ziven at the Salvation Army with
manager Jasmine Pershouse (left) and
colleague Robyn Bugenhagen.
I love being there and have lots of friends. Everyone chats to me and has a joke. They
all treat me as a great friend. I am a valued worker and am very much part of the team.
I love my two days a week there.

Endeavour Foundation Recycled Clothing stores in North
Mackay and Townsville have been officially opened.
Federal Member for Dawson, George Christensen, cut the ribbon
in Mackay while CEO David Barbagallo did the honours at the

The stores offer the usual fantastic range of quality clothing, shoes
and accessories for recycling with style, says North Queensland

something to wear every day at a fraction of the usual price,” she said.
Both are ‘concept stores’ featuring images and stories of people
who access Endeavour Foundation services, as explained by David
Barbagallo. “We hope that people will read those and understand
that their money is supporting people with a disability,” he said.

Generous donation by Fluor
Representatives of the engineering and construction company,
Fluor, attended Learning & Lifestyle in Roma to donate six iPads.
People who access Endeavour Foundation services, families, carers and
staff welcomed Construction Manager, Jonathan Bond. “Fluor is dedicated
to building strong communities and having a positive impact on the
communities in which we work and live,” Mr Bond said. Operations Manager
for local services Ange Gersekowski accepted the donation. “The iPads allow
for greater communication for people who are unable to verbalise, creating a
voice where none existed previously,” Ms Gersekowski said.
Thank you: From left, Damian Arthur, Mary Morris, Kerry Harris, Theresa

Meanwhile, Roma hosted two Family Planning Queensland workshops for
people who access Endeavour Foundation, staff and other local services.
This was made possible by a donation from the South West Area Committee.
Gympie upgrade thanks to Jim
A new shade sail and paving for a seating area at Endeavour
Foundation in Gympie have been made possible thanks to a
donation from Jim Buchanan.
The long-standing Endeavour Foundation supporter and now Wide Bay
Area Committee member donated $5,000 to improve the outdoor spaces
at the Learning & Lifestyle. Jim, whose stepson Geoffrey accesses
Endeavour Foundation, also provided funding for a raised garden,
fencing, a new water tank and rebuilding a wall two years ago. The
donation was in memory of his late wife.
“Sue did a lot of work for Endeavour Foundation and I took up the
cause after she passed away,” Jim said. “I’m delighted to do something
to benefit everyone there.”

Great rally
in Bathurst
The Great Endeavour Rally
generated huge interest among
the Bathurst 1000 faithful thanks
to an eye-catching display.
The Rally team spent four days at
the 50th anniversary of the renowned
event to promote next year’s inaugural
Great Endeavour Rally in New South
Wales. They handed out 1,000 stubby
coolers and 1,500 promotional flyers
but the main attraction was the
Great Endeavour Rally car kindly
supplied by the Deputy Chairman of
the Endeavour Foundation Board of
Directors, Shane Charles.
The display was in the main
merchandise area and attracted
thousands of motor sport enthusiasts.
A record crowd of 207,205 attended
the V8s over the four days and not
one of them will have been able to
go by without seeing the Endeavour
Foundation stand.
The first Great Endeavour Rally to be
held in New South Wales takes place
in October 2013. The Queensland
event will be in July. More information
is at great.endeavour.com.au.

Big crowd for
Big Day Out
The Big Community Day Out is
now in its second year and is
Endeavour Foundation’s way of
thanking the community for their
ongoing support.
A cloudless blue sky paired with the
CBD’s stunning high-rise skyline formed
the perfect backdrop for as families rolled
out their picnic rugs and revelled in eight
hours of live music, dance acts, magic
shows, face painting, gladiator duelling
and much more.
There were stellar performances from
top-notch acts including Wayward Inc,
multi award-winning Gold Coast band
The Lamplights, Dana Hassall, The Voice
star Kelsie Rimmer, Access Drumming
Group, Free Like Me, Brisbane rockers
Red on Red and our very own Waldie
Koplick band.
Street Groove Hiphop Dance Circle drew
one of the biggest crowds of the day as
they showcased a series of breathtaking
routines, while Triple J Unearthed
band Classik Nawu closed the event to
rapturous applause.
Sydney success for academic
The inaugural Endeavour Foundation Speaker Series breakfast in Sydney,
held in conjunction with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), proved popular.
Approximately 50 people attended the event at PwC head offices in Darling Park
Tower, to hear Queensland Centre for Intellectual and Developmental Disability
Director, Professor Nick Lennox.
Professor Lennox addressed the challenge of quality healthcare provision for
people with an intellectual disability, under the topic “Love in the time of
randomised controlled trials...and beyond”.
Making a stand: The Great Endeavour Rally display
at Bathurst attracted many admirers from the V8
devotees.
