At work in Tennessee - At Home in America
At work in Tennessee NOW MADE IN AMERICA The first Volkswagen Group assembly plant in the United States begins production in 2011 in the “CAN DO Community” of Chattanooga, Tenn. The energy-saving facility with an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles will produce a new mid-size sedan; 30 percent of all vehicles assembled here will be powered by Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel technology. The 1,580-acre campus will employ more than 2,000 employees and include a production and assembly line, paint and body shops, and administrative offices. It is estimated the plant will generate another 9,500 supplier-related jobs. Chattanooga was selected for its easy access to rail lines and interstate highways, an excellent pool of skilled workers, and its southeast location near supplier firms. With the construction of the LEED-aggressive manufacturing facility, Volkswagen is also assuming special responsibility for the environment, a commitment shared with Chattanooga. In addition to energy-saving ventilation systems which compensate for fluctuations in outside temperature, the production halls will feature efficient industrial lighting systems with reflectors. Volkswagen is also partnering with the state and city to distribute saplings for every tree displaced by construction.
