It’s a chance for kids to have fun and remember what being a friend is all about. To do that, we’re making Harmony. When melodies and lyrics come together, there’s beautiful music. The same is true for friendship. When you come together with others who enjoy each other’s company, something great happens. You’ve got Harmony! In line with this month’s theme, he or she can give kids a quick music lesson, lead them in learning a song to sing, share a mini-concert, or demonstrate an unusual instrument or talent such as yodeling, Irish or line dancing, or playing the dulcimer or bagpipes. If a local musician or music teacher isn’t an option, simply invite someone to share interesting information on a topic that’s engaging to your kids. If you have access to the Internet and a means of projection, there are numerous instructional videos on YouTube® for just about anything. Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Ask God to show you how you can encourage your group to teach others and help them learn something they don’t already know. Pray that God will remind you of what you already know about your group and use that to help them unpack how they can apply today’s Scripture to their lives. “Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we should also love one 1. Then invite kids to interact with one another about something they would like to learn one day. It can be as simple as learning to cook their grandma’s waffle recipe or as challenging as playing the bagpipes. It can be something they’ve seen someone do, read about, or imagined, or something they have a special interest in. When one kid shares, ask the others if they know of anyone with that training or ability. How did they go about learning to do that certain thing? Who taught them? What You Need: Paper, pens What You Do: Tell the kids that you have a unique ability to guess numbers. Here’s how it works: Ask somebody to think of a number, but keep it secret. Then ask that person to double the secret number and then multiply by 5. Ask them to tell you the total. Whatever the total is, take off the last digit and you will have their secret number. Repeat the trick several times and then let everyone in on the secret. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for that to happen each week. I’m excited about this month’s theme of friendship. ROCK STAR (application activity / optional classroom-wide activity) What You Need: Any supplies requested by your guest musician or teacher What You Do: Introduce your “Rock Star”—the guest artist or teacher you’ve invited to share with the kids. (See the “GET READY” section of this week’s lesson for ideas and preparation.) Depending on what you’ve previously arranged, provide any supplies needed for the presentation. What You Say: “God made us with the ability to learn and grow and to develop our skills and talents. That’s a huge blessing for us, but it can also be a cool thing for others when friends teach each other. Part of being a good friend is taking the time to teach someone else what we know. We all have gifts, talents, and abilities that we can share with others. “Maybe you can show a younger kid how to draw, or you can teach someone how to play a chord on the guitar or how to do division. When you share what you know by teaching someone else, you encourage that person and build up your friendship. Be careful, though, that you don’t come across as bragging or that you make the other person look and feel dumb. That would defeat God’s purpose completely. God wants us to take the things we’ve come to know about Him and the experiences we’ve had and teach others about Christ so that they can know Him, too. This week, share your stories with a caring heart, and as you do, you’ll shine for Jesus. Who knows, you may actually get the chance to teach that person about the most important thing—God! WEEK 3 PLUG IN 10-15 min POWER UP CATCH ON 20-25 min 25-30 min 2. 60-SECOND LESSON (application activity / review the Bible story) What You Need: Bibles with concordances (or Bibles and concordances or smart phones/tablets with concordances), paper, pens What You Do: Remind everyone that friends teach each other. One of the very best things we can teach to one another is God’s Word. Explain that you’re going to give the kids a chance to teach today. The lessons won’t be long—only 60 seconds. The lesson topic will be one word and they can pick the word. The only rules are that the word must describe something they know to be true about God, and the verses they use to back up what they believe must be found by using a concordance. If some of the kids are not familiar with what a concordance is, explain that it’s a cool tool for helping us find verses on most any topic in the Bible. It helps us find Scripture “addresses” or references that use the word we’re searching for. It’s set up like a dictionary with key words in alphabetical order. For example, if they would like to learn what the Bible has to say about love, they can look that word up and find a list of verses that contain the word “love.” Begin by brainstorming together a list of words for teams to choose from. Write words on a whiteboard or paper. Prompt kids to consider single words that describe God’s character (such as: powerful, loving, forgiving, Savior, etc.). kids share first, then add your own thoughts here as well. Let the Hand out paper, pens, and Bibles. If the Bibles do not have a concordance in the back, provide a separate concordance. Then form pairs or teams based on the number of Bibles and concordances available. Let each team choose a word from the list that they would like to look up and teach. All rights reserved. www.ThinkOrange.com Give each team one minute to teach the others by sharing their word and then reading a Bible verse or verses that express what it means. Let each team member contribute. If kids are unsure of what to teach after they have read their verse to the group, suggest that they finish the following sentence: “We learn from this verse that God …” What You Say: “When we know God, we have something incredibly important that we can teach to someone else. Do you have to be a pastor or a missionary or a Small Group Leader or a Bible scholar or have a degree in Bible smartness? No! Those things are all great, but even without them, you can still teach someone else what you know about God. Every follower of Jesus that’s here today can tell his or her friends and family about their faith this week. The more you learn about Jesus, the more you have in your heart to share with others. And the more you share, the more people will hear the Good News of how they, too, can become a child of God. Think about it. If every Christian taught others what they know to be true of God, we could change the world! LEARN A VERSE (memory verse activity / great for active learners) What You Need: Bibles What You Do: Provide Bibles as needed and help kids look up Romans 15:14. Review this month’s theme verse as well—1 John 4:11— and then form two teams. Assign one team Romans 15:14 and the other team 1 John 4:11. Invite kids to create a memory verse game and teach it to the other team. Let them know that you have paper, markers, or other standard classroom supplies available if they want to use them. They can also do something active, like coming up with a dance or actions. If kids need help, brainstorm word elimination games, fill in the blanks, jigsaw type puzzles, or putting the verse to a familiar song. Let team members contribute new ideas or draw from review games they’ve played in the past. Allow five minutes for the teams to create their “Learn a Verse” games. When finished, let them teach and then play each other’s games. What You Say: “You guys are amazing teachers! You did a fantastic job of helping each other learn some key Bible verses today. It’s important for us to remember that no one knows EVERYTHING about the Bible, but everyone here knows SOMETHING. You may know more than someone else when it comes to cooking or math or soccer. It might be easy to make fun of a person for not knowing what you know. So instead of laughing or rolling your eyes at them, remember that friends teach each other. Use the opportunity to build someone up and show them what a good friendship is all about.” Optional 5th Grade Discussion Questions If you lead fifth graders, consider asking these discussion questions: • What would a friendship look like if kids tried to teach each other instead of making fun of someone? • How does teaching someone show God’s love to that person? • What are the benefits of being known among your friends as a kid who helps others learn? • What are some things you know and are good at that you could teach to someone else? • What should you do if the person you want to teach doesn’t want to learn? ©2014 The reThink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. www.ThinkOrange.com PRAY AND DISMISS What You Need: “Friendship Trading Cards” (Activity Page), pens, envelopes from last week What You Do: Hand out the pouches or envelopes containing the Friendship Trading Cards kids received from each other in previous weeks. Explain to newcomers that every week this month, your Small Group will create, exchange, and collect two new Friendship Trading Cards from one another. The cards will help them get to know and pray for each other. 11 June | 2014 | SG 45 FRIENDSHIP Treating others the way you want to be treated. WEEK 3 PLUG IN 10-15 min POWER UP CATCH ON 20-25 min 25-30 min Give everyone a pen and two Friendship Trading Cards. (You may need to provide additional envelopes for newcomers.) Ask kids to fill out both sides of the cards, including a prayer request. Encourage them to write a prayer request that asks for God’s help to live out this week’s Bottom Line in a specific way. They can also write down a concern they have. When finished, have kids exchange cards with two other kids. These should be different kids than they traded with in the past two weeks. Form a circle and sit down. Let kids read the prayer requests on their Friendship Trading Cards and then pray silently. Tell them to indicate that they are finished praying by quietly saying today’s Bottom Line out loud: Friends teach each other. When everyone is done, close by thanking God for the ability to learn and grow and develop skills and abilities. Thank Him for all of the many people who have patiently taught us. Ask Him to help us take the things we know and the experiences we’ve had and use them to teach others in a way that makes them want to know God, too. Collect the Friendship Trading Card pouches for use next week. What You Say: “This week you’ll have many chances to show your friends, family, neighbors, and teammates that you care about them. Sharing what you know and teaching others communicates that you care. Each of you has already learned a lot of things in your life. You have skills and abilities now that you didn’t have a few years ago. Most importantly, many of you know more about God than you did when you were younger. So, what do you know about God that you could teach someone else this week? (Let kids respond.) Because friends teach each other, it’s exciting to think of the ways God might use each of us this week to help someone else follow Him.” ©2014 The reThink Group, Inc.
