Beginning an exercise program
According to Stew Smith, Navy Seal and Certified Strength and Conditioning
Specialist, those who are new to exercise or who have been out of the habit
of exercise need to begin slowly, develop habits of daily exercise, conquer
doubt, associate with fit and healthy people, and set a personal exercise goal.
There are a wide variety of beginning exercise programs that will help meet
the goals of any individual deciding to begin an exercise program. Before
beginning any exercise program, it is suggested you discuss it with your doctor.
Types
The American Council on Exercise recommends that, if you are a beginner to
exercise, start slowly with stretching, strengthening the core muscle groups,
and add in aerobic exercises. There are many different beginner programs
which outline the stretches, core exercises, and aerobic exercises necessary
to develop muscle strength, flexibility, and aerobic capacity.
FITNESS
Benefits
The benefits to any exercise program are countless, as stated by Georgia State
University's Department of Kinesiology and Health. The physical benefits include
a healthy weight, reducing the risk of diabetes, building and maintaining healthy
bones, joints, and muscles, reducing the risk of depression or anxiety, along
with a host of other benefits. The health benefits of regular aerobic exercise
include improvements in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems such as
lower resting blood pressure, increased oxygen carrying capacity, and a
decreased resting heart rate.
Overcoming Obstacles
Stew Smith states that some of the biggest obstacles to beginning an exercise
program and sticking with it include quitting before the habit of exercise forms,
self-doubt, and lack of goal setting. It is necessary to make a goal, for example,
to finish the entire session of a beginner program. Put the exercise program
into your daily schedule until exercise becomes a habit. If you are not losing
weight as quickly as you had planned, self doubt may occur, and it is imperative
to remember that increasing muscle strength, flexibility, and aerobic capacity is
the main goal.

Considerations/Warnings
Although exercise is beneficial for everyone, there are some warnings to beginning
an exercise program. Pregnant women, women over the age of 55 or men over the
age of 45 should speak with their doctor prior to starting an exercise program.
If you have cardiac risk factors, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or high
cholesterol, the American Council on Exercise recommends a physical from your
primary health care provider before engaging in vigorous aerobic exercise.
