- International e-Sports Federation (IeSF) announces that IeSF 2013 Asia Conference will be hosted at Incheon city, Korea.

(AIMAG) which is hosted by Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) will be held at
Incheon from 29th June until 6th of July. e-Sport is included in this mega-sport
event as one of official sport disciplines, and IeSF is taking role of the official

Distinguished from the conferences in the past, the list of attendees is remarkable.
Basically, the representatives of all IeSF’s 12 Asian member National Associations
will be participating in 4th AIMAG as officials: either team leaders of each nation’s
e-sports delegation or Juries for e-sports competition. Officials of National Olympic
Committees (NOCs) related to IeSF’s member associations will also attend the
conference in company with the representatives of member associations.
IeSF will send out RSVP for other NOCs who are interested in e-sports as well as
RVIPs from international sports governing bodies such as EOC and OCA. With
approximately 80 attendees, diverse important issues related to e-sports scene in
Asia will be handled at the conference, and it is planned to be broadcasted.

Opening the Door of Anti-Doping in e-Sports
- As adopting WADA Code and International Standards for Doping Control, International e-Sports Federation (IeSF) is one more step getting closer to the Global Sport
Society.

A s one of its major tasks, International e-Sports Federation (IeSF) is keeping its
all staffs busy with wrapping up the Sport Accord membership application in order
to raise the status of e-sports as one of official sport discipline with recognition of
global sport society.
Then, as one of the requirements for the application, IeSF has faced issues to
become an Anti-Doping Organization (ADO) as an international sport governing
body and to get recognition of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Now, IeSF is one more step closer to the global sports society as following its
standard, and will keep endeavoring to make e-sports as one of the official sport
discipline with its recognition.
All materials related to Anti-Doping program will be disclosed after they are
finalized with the evaluation of WADA.
In furtherance of its role, IeSF started dedicating its efforts to ensuring that the
spirit of Fair Play prevails in e-Sports, and takes measures with the goal of
preventing endangering the health of e-sports players. Therefore, with the
consensus between IeSF’s mission and the requirement of Sport Accord
membership application, IeSF decided to accept the World Anti-Doping Code and
its International Standards, and to lead the fight against doping in e-sports.
In a bid of answer to this issue, IeSF Secretariat has established the IeSF AntiDoping Regulations and IeSF Doping Control Guide Book. First drafts of all
necessary documents and structures are finalized, and have been sent to WADA for
its evaluation and feedbacks.

Tekken League is back to Korea
- Tekken League is coming back to the scene of Korean e-Sports with Nicegame.tv..

T ekken league which disappeared in Korea with the end of Ongame.net’s “Tekken Busters” is
rising from the ashes as the name of “Tekken Strike” featured by Nicegame.tv.
Tekken Strike which will be operated with Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will be running until April
2014 for 4 seasons. Also, at the end of the 4 seasons, Grand final will be held with the best players
for the year competing each other.
Especially, as distinguished from other Tekken leagues in the past, local preliminary tours are
planned for players resident in local area. Thus, it is expected to be positioned as whole new concept
of Tekken league.
The old fashioned Tekken leagues hosted by MBC Game and Ongame.net were operated as 3:3
team matches. However, since Tekken Strike is planned to be operated with 1:1 individual matches,
it is expected to provide distinguished entertainment to the e-sports fans.
Tekken Strike Season 1 is planned to be on-air from May 11th, and is receiving applications at

GAME DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE 2013
- GDC 2013 (2013 Game Developers Conference), the world's largest and longest-running event for game professionals, was held in San Francisco’s Moscone Center
from 25th~29th March, 2013.

M any people said that every game industry is on
the wane, but GDC 2013 contradicts the bias
showing ‘Game industry is exceptional and
promising’. The host of GDC, UBM Tech Game
Network, announced they drew 23,000 industry
professionals.
The 2013 conference kicked off with two days of
tutorials and summits focused on specific emerging
platforms and topics: a newly introduced Free to
Play Design & Business Summit, the Smartphone &
Tablet Games Summit, and the Independent Games
Summit.
The show featured hundreds of roundtables, panels,
workshops, and lectures covering every aspect of the
industry, from game creation to monetization. GDC
also ran a show floor with 350 exhibitors, as well as
a Career Pavilion.
All game related professionals participated in the
various sessions sharing ideas and opinions for the
bright future of game industry. GDC 2013 suggested
not only general discussion but also the new release
of blockbuster games like Team Portress 2,
BattleField 4, Destiny and World of Tanks General
etc. It was also a big year for independent
developers and ThatGameCompany's Journey
sweeping the Game Developers Choice Awards.

award at the IGF and its associated $30,000 grand
prize, as well as the award for Narrative and the

Jays’ Game Selection of April: Need for Speed

- My Game Selection on April is “Need For Speed” (NFS). Although few e-Sports
tournament based on Racing Genre, NFS has been selected as one of the official
titles in 2013 Asia Indoor & Martial Arts Games e-Sports discipline. Keeping
up with this, I hope to investigate the history of NFS series and why NFS series
are regarded as unchallenged racing game. Getting information of NFS series, I
was quite surprised at its number of series. So, I will divide the column about
NFS to 2 parts.
Need For Speed Series
NFS is an Arcade Racing Game, developed by EA and has been published with PC, Console and Mobile
version. Since 1994 when the 1st content was released, there have been 21 series. As I could not play 21 series
all and acquire the information of games, let me introduce some parts of series which were landmarks in NFS
history with support of Korean NFS online community. What made me interested was that developers of each
series were different. Because these difference, there were gaps in game engine, and it drove competition to
them.
1. Road & Track Presents : The Need For Speed (1994) / Need For Speed II (1996)
Road & Track Presents The Need For Speed / Need For Speed II
In 1994, the 1st series of NFS, Road & Track Presents : The Need For Speed (TNFS) was released, developed
by Pioneer Productions. TNFS was highly popular to game users, regardless of DOS base, with high quality of
graphic and simulation factor. In fact, what made users excited was its video clips (considering the era) rather
than game itself. NFS II released in 1996 was based on Windows, not DOS and expressed better effects on
racing. However, most of users were complained to its excessive specifications to play compared with its
contents.
2. Need For Speed III : hot Pursuit (1998)
Need For Speed III : Hot Pursuit (NFS 3), released in 1998 was regarded as a product which marked an era by
adopting “car chase” (Hot pursuit) and applying Direct 3D. In Chase mode, there were “Being pursued” as
well as “Pursuing” mode. NFS 3 guaranteed a fantastic graphic (considering the era) with the 3DFX emulator.

3. Need For Speed : Porsche Unleashed (2000)
In 2000, departing from dream car racing, Need For Speed : Porsche Unleashed (NFS
PU) was released. In this game, users could see only Porsche. It applied a full 3D
point of sight which described driver’s hands. Unlike previous series, NFS PU had a
physical engine highly closed to “Servey Racing Game” which was the 1st attempt in
NFS series. This factor often made players who were used to simple physical engine
of previous series feel difference, but this factor also made NFS PU evaluated as one
of the masterpieces. NFS PU is often played until now.
4. Need For Speed : Hot Pursuit 2 (2002)
Need For Speed : Porsche Unleashed
In order to boost up NFS series, EA Seattle released Need For Speed : Hot Pursuit 2
(NFS : HP2) with crowd of dream cars. EA Seattle produced games for PS2, XBOX,
PC and Nintendo Game Cube platforms. PS2 version was only product which
developed by Black Box, others were produced by EA Seattle. However, there was
big gap between PS2 version and others in play mode and graphic, enough to consider
they are different games. In PS2 version, players excited its brilliant light effect and
this effect made users who played other version depressed. After Black Box produced
this NFS : HP2, Black Box was taken over by EA and full responsible for producing
next NFS series. From this series, famous music of big celebrities were used for BGM
in NFS series
5. Need For Speed : Underground (2003) / Need For Speed : Underground 2 (2004)
Need For Speed : Hot Pursuit 2
In 2003, Need For Speed : Underground (UG) hit again treating the “Street Racing”,
getting out of Super Car System which looked fixed model in NFS. It seemed to be
effected by movie – “Fast & Furious”. UG showed various game methods such as drift
and drag and it does not look old fashioned until now. The motion blur was first
adapted in the game so that provoked better graphic.
In 2004, UN 2, sequel of UN was released. “Out-run” mode based on Free-Run
system which had been a requirement of UN version as well as replay mode was
applied.

6. Need For Speed : Most Wanted
Need For Speed : Most Wanted, released in 2005 received fervent response, applying
Super Car System again. NFS Most Wanted was developed in various factors
compared to previous versions. Drift and “Out-run” mode were deleted, and “Speed
Breaker” system which made game scene like slow motion was adapted. Also,
“Challenge Series” mode was added so that users can enjoy the game after watching
ending scene.
Pursuing Mode was also enhanced. In fact, lots of fans were confused if NFS Most
Wanted is a game or movie while they were playing Pursuing Mode, giving police’s
pursuer the slip with Speed Breaker in the game. As the storyline of the game was to
be No.1 in illegal street racing, there were some funny modes such as breaking as
many patrol cars as possible and being caught by speed camera as much as possible.
With these kinds of reasons above, Most Wanted is one of the favorite versions in
whole series.

Screen stars: Playing games is a serious sport
- For the new e-sports stars, playing computer or video games can bring fame, fortune and even national colours

There was a time when a sleepless weekend would flit by while I stayed in my
pajamas, eating Marmite on toast and building pyramids in the city construction

Since the late 1990s, the e-sports governing body Mind Sports South Africa, an

awarded provincial colours for gaming and national colours followed in 2005.
Once considered the preserve of socially awkward teenaged boys, players at the top
of their electronic game are increasingly getting official recognition for a
specialized skill set that, for the very best, can bring fame and money.
Protea gamer Robert Botha, known as “PandaTank” in gaming circles, is South
Africa’s most famous video gaming professional and a grandmaster at StarCraft II
— a science fiction strategy game in which players build armies to destroy
opponents. While many of his post-grad peers take a gap year to travel and wait
tables, the 22-year-old information technology graduate from Johannesburg has
travelled as far afield as Cheonan in South Korea to play competitively. After
impressing at a Paris tournament earlier this year, where he almost beat one of the

for a three-month stint at the Razer Academy for gamers.
“You have to have a strong competitive drive as well as the desire to constantly
improve yourself at every-thing you do,” Botha told me in an email interview. “I
have personally put thousands of hours into practicing and trying to improve.”

Rising to the top doesn’t happen by fluke. Competitive players study maps, read up
on strategy, scrutinise videos of their opponents’ games, analyse their own, then run
through play after play, doing drills. Botha hasn’t yet reached the level at which he
can make a comfortable living off gaming. “I have probably spent more money
trying to compete than I have made back in total,” he lamented.
Even on retainer with the cheekily named Portuguese StarCraft II team, Pwnanza
(“pwned” or “pwning” is a deliberate misspelling of the term “owned” or “owning”,
which means to dominate another team), he’s only managed to stay afloat this long
by dipping into his savings. But the payoffs of being a tournament player are
potentially huge: the winner of the recent Blizzard World Cup in Shanghai, China,
took home $100 000.
Tournaments can draw crowds in their thousands. Hundreds of thousands view live
streamed matches online and, in South Korea, where gaming is considered a
national sport, StarCraft games are broadcast on two dedicated TV channels,
complete with commentary and play-by-play analysis. Makers of high-spec gaming
computers are willing to fork out big money to ensure that the top gamers are seen
playing on their machines, with their headsets, keyboards and mice.
Said Botha: “With the backing of strong sponsors, well-known players can earn up
to R65 000 a month and travel to a different country nearly every week.”
But for South Africans like Botha, even spectacular talent is no guarantee of
landing such deals. Sponsors are mindful of the huge travel costs involved in flying
someone based at the tip of Africa to tournaments, he said. For now, Botha is riding
the wave of his recent success and focusing on improving his skills and profile
through competitive play. Players like Botha don’t materialize out of thin air.
Top guns
Although South Africa is a gaming minnow compared with South Korea, local esports leagues are becoming more sophisticated. In addition to school and club
leagues, hundreds of players are involved in Telkom’s commercial Do Gaming
league, which this year offered more than R1-million in prizes to the country’s top
guns.
“You don’t realize how good these guys are. It’s a genuine skill,” said Byron Rigby,
a competitive gamer and an account manager at games distributor Megarom. “It’s
not just running around and shooting because you won’t win like that.”
This year, Rigby’s “clan”, Monster Energy Gaming, beat perennial favorites
Bravado at the first-person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in the finals of
the Do Gaming league championship. They couldn’t have done it, he said, if the
team hadn’t gone into seclusion for a week to practice and work on strategy.

Competitive gaming requires a competitive nature, and often those who excel in
e-sports excel in physical sports too. Springbok and former Sharks eighthman
Ryan Kankowski is a devoted player of Defense of the Ancients, a strategy
computer game in which teams of players, positioned at opposite ends of a map,
set out to fortify their positions and destroy their enemies.
Mind Sports South Africa president Colin Webster sees the same thing among the
country’s top school-aged players. “We have one [gamer] who has colours in
wrestling. In the Free State there’s a gamer who plays for the provincial cricket
team,” he said.
Webster, a swimmer in his youth, sees little difference between a competitive
athlete and a competitive gamer. “What’s the difference? At the one end [of the
spectrum], you have a highly trained athlete; at the other you have the person
sitting at the edge of the pool playing Marco Polo, with a six-pack of beers and
some friends,” he said. So it is with gaming. Webster hopes to grow the country’s
school gaming league but concedes that e-games are still a niche sport. After all, a
school would need a roomful of computers before it could even think of fielding a
team.
School sport
Last month I went to a friendly match between teams from two of Johannesburg’s
top private schools: it was a chance to gain the upper hand over their mutual rival
from Pretoria Boys High, which tops the league in Gauteng.
There were groans, whoops and frantic key tapping as the young team from
Roedean School was beaten at Defense of the Ancients by the more experienced
players from St John’s College.
“Strategy games build critical thinking skills, whether [children] are playing a
board game like Risk or a video game like World of Warcraft,” said Dorian Love,
the teacher who manages the gaming teams for both schools.
Still, schools don’t regard it with the same seriousness as traditional sports.
“Gaming has to compete with traditional sports like netball and hockey for time
on the school schedule, and the sports department is very jealous of its time,” said
Love. “Not everyone enjoys running around a field chasing a ball,” he said. For
many parents and teachers gaming is still seen as something kids shouldn’t be
doing, and often the same adults who can see the value of chess or chequers
struggle to see the value of gaming. “The thinking is that they should be studying,”
said Love. But as more parents realize the fringe benefits that come with highlevel gaming — such as university bursaries and the chance for international
exposure — this mindset is slowly changing.
Amanda Isaacs, whose 14-year-old daughter Gabriela is a devoted gamer is not a
fan. “We’re old school, and gaming isn’t going to get you a good job,” she said.
She’s not wrong. In the South African context, gaming probably isn’t going to get
you a good job. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have spin-off benefits. Isaacs knew
her daughter spent hours a day gaming but only realized how good she was when
she mopped up at the national trials and was chosen to represent South Africa at
an international championship in South Korea. Though her parents still don’t
quite see the appeal, Gabriela’s gaming is now a point of pride for the family. The
fact that she has her heart set on a career in biomechanics has kept things
uncomplicated.
Meanwhile, with the international travel and minor celebrity status it has brought,
gaming has, for Gabriela, provided an unexpected window of opportunity. Avid
gamer Alexandra Kayle (27), from Killarney, said she wouldn’t be where she is
today if it wasn’t for gaming. She was an obsessive gamer at high school. “On a
weekend, I could easily spend an entire day playing,” she said. Her first computer,
a gift from dad when she was nine, led her to a love affair with technology. This,
in turn, led to a career in technology journalism and eventually to her current job
in the global communications department at the global software corporation SAP.
Kayle insists that gaming is addictive, but in the same breath points out that it’s
just one of the things she does in her spare time, along with scuba diving and
volunteering at Lifeline as well as at a local wildlife rehabilitation centre. And yet
the stereotype of the rumpled, Shaun of the Dead-type slacker who lives in his
mother’s basement, amped up on energy drinks and permanently attached to a
controller and headset, persists.
