Big Shoes To Fill on GHV Girls’ Track Team
Will the GHV girls’ track team have
enough firepower to successfully defend their conference title? The Cardinals return a wealth of talent to the
roster this year but replacing stars
like Emily Mathews, Dasi Larson and
Maddie Tusha will no doubt be a very
tall task.
This year’s squad consists of 25
team members with 14 returning let-
ter winners. The Cards will have reasonable depth in the distance races
with Angela O’Hara, Morgan Graham and Rebecca Larson running the
long events while Tiara Van Gerpen,
Courtney Prescott, Danielle Nelson
and Rachel Weaver will fill the middle
distance races. Stacy Hackenmiller,
Brooklyn Ossman and Miranda Jackson will be competing in the hurdle
events while Mallory Van Oort, Casie
Conley and Betshaida Larson will be
leaders in the sprint events. Taylor
Vossberg is also a sprinter who also
scores consistently in the high jump.
An athletic group of freshmen are
expected to help fill some spots in
the varsity lineup. Jillian Heitland
and Jacki Van Oort will hopefully
add depth to the sprinting and hurdle
crews while Emma Whelan is expected to fill some spots in the middle
distance and distance events.
It appears that the Cardinal athletes
share their coach’s passion for the
sport. “We are so excited to be back at
it this season. The girls are ready to do
what it takes to put up a fight and hold
our own. The excitement started early
this winter with girls texting each
other, “I can’t wait for track!” They
truly love this sport and they love this
team! We’re looking forward to an
amazing season!”

Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Boys Track
Members of the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura track and field team for the 2015 season are: (front row, left to right) Jarod Christie, Derek Brown, Chase Smith, Nich
Mehmen, Jacob Meier, Parker Schnieders, Connor Kiss, Spencer Formanek, John Hulbert, Dane Whipple, Ray Cataldo, Mason Wirtz; (middle row) Sam Haugen,
Kelsey Steffens, Logan Dalbeck, Zac Scholl, JJ Joschen, Colby Reid, Michael Chizek, Josh Miller, Kevin Boehnke, Ty Ewing, Conner Shaw, Daniel Schreur, Harley

Rohlfing, Ben Burzacott, and Cale Edwards. (Photo courtesy of Patty Jo Sanderson)
GHV Boys Look to
Maintain Track Success
GHV boys’ track coach Kelsey Steffens will have plenty of options available as she builds her meet lineups
this season. The Cardinals will again
feature a large number of competitors
on the squad as a dozen letter winners
along with 18 others are seeking spots
on the varsity roster.
GHV has been strong in hurdle
events recently and that trend should
continue with three members of last
year’s state qualifying shuttle hurdle
relay team working for a return trip.
Sam Cataldo, J.J. Loschen and David
Cook will be looking for a fourth as
they work on that relay.
GHV’s distance events have also
been a highlight in recent seasons and
that appears to be a strong area again.
State qualifier Chase Smith will work
for another trip to Des Moines while
Derek Brown and Logan Dalbeck
will add depth to the distance corps.
Johnny O’Connor is expected to be
a strong performer in the middle distance events.
GHV will have six letter winners
filling spots in the sprint events. Ezra
Marroquin, Logan Rohlfing, Connor
Shaw, Kevin Boehnke, Zac Scholl
and Nich Mehmen will provide a
good nucleus of talent for Steffens to
use when building her lineup.
The Conference has been competitive for many seasons and that is also
expected to be the case this year. Steffens expects the top NIC contenders
to be Forest City, Osage and GHV.
The Cards have some big shoes to fill,
but they hope to repeat as NIC champions.
“I am excited to start this outdoor
season,” noted Coach Steffens. “We
have a talented, dedicated group who
are eager to compete and earn points
for the team.

While having only 14 athletes will
limit the amount of points the Bison
can rack up at meets, Coach Potter
says they should have some good performances across a range of events.
“We look to have some pieces that
can score well in each of the broad
areas – throws, sprints and distance,”
said Potter.
Staying healthy will be one area
of concern for the team. “We have
sustained some injuries early in the

North Iowa Girls Golf
Members of the North Iowa girls’ golf team for the 2015 season are: (front row, left to right) Samantha Pettit, Dani Yegge and Ivey Greensky; (Back row) Chelsey Roth,
Sydney Giesking, Mica Johnson and Jenna Berschman.
Rebuilding year for
Lady Bison golfers
With just two returning golfers
from last season, the North Iowa Lady
Bison will largely be a new team this
year.
Providing some experience for a
team that includes many first-time
golfers are junior Sydney Giesking
and senior Chelsey Roth. Another
source of experience will be Head
Coach Vic Garza, who has returned to
the team after one year off as coach.
Garza says he expects Giesking to
be the team’s top golfer this season.

“She will be the strength and the
leader of the girls’ team this year. Her
swing looks real good and the driver
is long. There is some work to do on
the short game, but that will come as
the season goes on,” said Garza. He
says Roth will bring her game as a
veteran and will be trying hard this
season.
Joining the squad for their first
season this year are juniors Ivey
Greensky, Samantha Pettit and Mica
Johnson, sophomore Dani Yegge, and
freshman Jenna Berschman.
One of the main things the Lady Bison will be focusing on this season is
their short game. “The short game is
always a problem. Chipping and putting at this level of golf is last to come
around,” said Garza.
While it will be tough to be competitive in the conference without
having much experience, Garza says
he hopes the girls can have fun and
enjoy the game.

North Iowa boys return
strong lineup of golfers
The North Iowa boys will bring
a lot of experience to the golf
course this season, as four seniors
and one junior return to the lineup.
Senior Taylor Ostermann returns
for his fourth year on the varsity
squad, along with seniors Colton
Skarpohl-Ost, Garrett Walsh and
Austin Paden, plus junior Cam
Hepperly.
Vic Garza is back to helm the
golf team as head coach, after
taking last season off. He says
Ostermann will be a big asset to
the team, as he knows most of the
courses and is a hard worker. “He
will get his share of medals this
year,” said Garza.
“Colton is starting to show improvement in his game already
this year. Garrett is working on
his irons, and his driver is going
straight and long. Cam showed a
lot of improvement in his driver
from two years ago, and I hope it
works out in competition. Austin
is straightening out his driver and
irons, his golf swing is improving a lot from last year, and he
will be shooting lower scores this
year with some hard work,” said
Garza.
Newcomers to the squad are
freshmen Jordan Boekelman and
Damon Olson.
Garza hopes to see the boys finish in the top three in the conference this season, with Forest City
and Lake Mills being the top contenders. To get there, he says the
golfers will need to keep the ball
in the fairway and work on improving their short game.
“If they can keep the game fun
and just enjoy it as a game that can
be played long after they leave
school, then we will have a successful season,” said Garza.

Numbers grow
for Eagle Golf teams
The West Hancock golf teams will
have more athletes representing the
Eagles this spring than recent seasons.
The Eagles roster has grown from
two females and five males in 2014 to
five and 14 respectively for the 2015
season.
With almost tripling their roster, the
Eagles under second year Head Coach
Troy Hobscheidt and Assistant Derek
Cornett, are bound to raise the bar of
competition they bring to this year’s
schedule.
West Hancock will be led by six returning letterwinners; seniors Jordan
Savoy and Logan Jones, juniors Alex
Hartwig and Colton Ruter and sophomore Jonathon Hernandez for the boys
and senior Taylor Beachy for the girls.
Newcomers to the Eagle golf teams
include Brice Kudej, Trinity Thompson, Levi Eden, Seth Weiland, Garrett Fosdick, Trey Hobscheidt, Nick
Lemmon, Chase Stokka and Chandler
Schuver for the boys and Alexis Klepoch, April Robbins, Cassie Engstler
and Alyssa Klepoch for the girls.
Both teams are scheduled to kick off
their 2015 season on Tuesday, April
7th against North Iowa. The girls will
compete at the North Iowa Sports
Complex, while the boys will be at the
Gruis Rec Arena.
Monday, April 13th the Eagles will
host their first meet at the Britt Country
Club against Osage and North Union.

GHV Boys Look to
Challenge in Golf
In spite of losing some quality players to graduation, GHV boys’ golf
coach Ken Krause is expecting some
good things on the course this season.
The Cardinals enjoyed great success
last year, finishing 19 – 13 – 1 overall while placing second at the North
Iowa Conference tournament. The
Cards will have a better outlook in
post-season play as well since GHV
will be competing in Class 2A when
the state tournament series begins.
For the past two seasons the Cards
have been a 3A school.
Coach Krause will build this year’s
team around four returning letterwinners. Seniors Ryan Grunwald,
Braedan Johnston and Jordan Babcock will provide a strong nucleus
to the squad along with sophomore
Grady Umbarger. Umbarger is the
lone letter winner returning with
all-conference honors.
The Cardinals will be expecting
some stiff competition in NIC play
this season, especially with the addition of three new teams to the league.
Bishop Garrigan will no doubt add
strength to the conference schedules
along with newcomers Eagle Grove
and North Union. The 11-team league
should provide plenty of stiff competition and GHV will have the luxury
of hosting this year’s conference tournament.
Good Luck Cardinals!

GHV Girls Prepare to Golf
With only three letter winners returning from last season’s squad,
the Cardinal girls’ golf team realistically shouldn’t expect to repeat as the
North Iowa Conference champions.
But in spite of lacking experience, the
GHV girls begin the season with high
hopes for another successful season.
The Cards have opened the past two
years with at least five letter winners
on the roster, leading GHV to consecutive NIC titles. The Cardinals went
21 – 9 overall in 2014 and Coach
Todd Greiman is optimistic that this
year’s team can match or possibly
even improve on that mark.

North Iowa Conference tournament
and also advanced to the Class 3A Regional Final tournament. Hejna was
right behind Kyleigh at the NIC meet,
finishing third individually and finished one stroke shy of moving on in
Class 3A tournament play. Completing the list of returning letter winners
is sophomore Elly Johnston.
Even with untested young play-
ers on the roster, Greiman believes
the squad will be competitive. “Both
Madee and Kyleigh had solid seasons
last year and I see them both being
top performers in the NIC. Bailee
has considerable experience in junior
tournaments and that should help her
fit right into the lineup.
The Cardinals will open their season with a tough test against a seasoned squad. GHV will host a Clarion-Goldfield team that qualified for
the state tournament last year and has
all six players returning.

GHV Girls Seek Soccer Improvement
New athletic programs at most
high schools typically require several seasons to develop competitive
squads. The GHV girls’ soccer team,
in their third year of existence under
head coach Josh Banse, has shown
growth over the past two seasons and
the Cards are looking for that trend to
continue. The Cardinals won five of 15
matches in 2014 and considering that
six of the losses were either by one
goal or in overtime, GHV appears to
be on the verge of significant success.
Banse has an optimistic outlook
heading into the season, especially
since the roster contains an impres-
sive number of experienced players.
With 13 letter winners on the squad the
Cards should be able to field a competitive team this season. The list of
returning players includes nine starters and five subs from last year’s team
along some incoming freshmen with
great talent.
Six seniors will look to lead the team
over the .500 mark this year. On that
list are mid fielder/forward Mackenzie Haag, defender/utility Autumn
Prehn, defender Tiara Van Gerper, forward Riannan Kadrlik, forward Emily
Spilman and goalie Samantha Betz.
Three talented juniors will also pro-
vide experience to the team with midfielders Payton Bamrick and Autumn
Weaver along with defender Sydney
Childress. Sophomores also fill some
key roles with defenders Mackenzie Van Gerpen, Brooklyn Laird
and Carlie Knutson and goalie
Hannah Lau.

Seniors Will Lead GHV Boys Soccer
GHV boys’ soccer coach Eric Williams is hoping that a strong senior
presence combined with a healthy list
of returning letter winners will result
in a successful season for the Cardinals. With a total of 34 players on
the roster and a dozen letter winners,
GHV should be able to continue the
trend of improvement. The Cards fin-
ished 5 – 8 overall last year, showing
improvement in the win column for
the fourth consecutive season.
Seven senior letter winners will lend
their leadership to this year’s squad.
Seniors playing defender include Corey Hauptman, Logan Ryerson and
Logan Johnson while Jack Bertilson,
Josh Miller and Nathan Lacaria are
all midfielders. Goalkeeper Jeremiah
Loschen completes the list of seniors
while juniors Dalton Basinger, Ty
Marth and Turner Albertson will play
striker and midfield. Sophomores
Chase Theobald and Patrick Terhark
return as defender and striker.
Williams noted that he also has an
abundance of young talent. “We con-
tinue to believe that we are a team,
and there are going to be a lot of underclassmen that will be contributing
this year. We have a very large freshman class that has shown success the
last couple of years in the North Iowa
Soccer program.”
Coach Williams has high hopes for
the upcoming season. “I believe that
this year we have all the pieces to be
successful. I want our student athletes
to know what it means to be “student
athletes” first, and proud community,
and school representatives, and developing to be great young men. I think
this is the best team we have had on
paper, and I love the challenge of getting them to perform on the field.”
