Message from Michael deMoet, Chief of Police Motorcycle Patrols Launched in Montclair; Part of the Traffic Safety Division Traffic Safety Division Launched In December 2014, the Montclair Police Department officially launched its new Traffic Safety Division. The mission of the Traffic Safety Division is to reduce traffic related deaths, injuries, and financial losses through high visibility enforcement, educational programs, and public awareness campaigns. Members of the Division are commanded by a Lieutenant and work closely with the Community Relations Division to carry out the mission. Motorcycle Officers Specially trained “motor officers” are assigned to the Traffic Safety Division. Motorcycles provide the officers with enhanced acceleration, increased visibility, better maneuverability, and quicker response times in heavy traffic. In addition to three weeks of motorcycle training, officers receive specialized training in traffic enforcement, traffic collision investigation, and other traffic related topics. The officers utilize current traffic collision data, empirical data, and input from the public to direct traffic enforcement efforts. In addition to high-visibility traffic enforcement, the officers are responsible for developing and presenting public education programs. Motor Officers work high visibility enforcement around the City’s schools, to help ensure the safety of our community’s children. Traffic Complaints The Traffic Safety Division relies on members of the public to provide information on traffic-related issues. To report a problem or to provide traffic-related input, click the link below to email your comments to the Traffic Safety Division. The Division will make every effort to respond to your comments expeditiously. Please include your name and phone number if response is desired. traffic@cityofmontclair.org Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Checks Officers assigned to the Traffic Safety Division are certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) technicians. National CPS Certification Training is a program of Safe Kids Worldwide, which is the certifying body and responsible for managing all aspects of the program. CPS technicians can conduct child safety seat checks by appointment. Parents and caregivers receive education and hands-on assistance from CPS technicians to enhance the safety of child passengers. To schedule an appointment for a child safety seat check, or to schedule a group presentation on occupant safety, click the link below to email a request. Please include your name and phone number. childsafety@cityofmontclair.org Major Accident Investigation Team One of the components of the Traffic Safety Division is the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT). The Department has four investigators supervised by a Sergeant. MAIT members can be called upon to investigate critical events such as collisions resulting in fatalities, collisions involving the railroad, commercial vehicles, serious injury pedestrian collisions, City vehicle involved collisions, public transit collisions, and any other collision events with potential for significant injury or liability. Although all officers with the Montclair Police Department are trained in collision investigations, officers assigned to MAIT receive advanced training in physics of collisions, skid analysis, and advanced coordinate mapping using a SOKKIA Total Station. This information can then be used to recreate the collision on a computer to assist with determining the cause. Members of MAIT possess skills from many disciplines including commercial vehicle enforcement, criminal investigations, mechanical vehicle inspections, and traffic enforcement/safety. With the capabilities of the SOKKIA Total Station, members of MAIT can also be called upon to create forensic crime scene diagrams for criminal investigations. Police Department Reactivates the Crime Suppression Unit The Police Department reactivated the Crime Suppression Unit (CSU) on March 2, 2015. CSU will focus on a variety of specialized problems within the community. The team works closely with community members and allied agencies to develop crime-fighting partnerships, and engages in innovative "Problem-Oriented Policing" strategies designed to improve the quality of life for community members. The team’s problem-solving strategies focus on eliminating the underlying causes of community problems, as opposed to reacting to the effects. CSU is comprised of a Sergeant and three Crime Suppression Officers. Each Officer is assigned an investigative responsibility and receives specialized training in that area of responsibility. The three primary areas of expertise include narcotics enforcement, gang/graffiti investigation, and metal theft. Montclair Police Department 4870 Arrow Highway Montclair, CA 91763 (909) 448-3600 EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES (EMS) SUBSCRIPTION PROGRAM No one likes to think about needing emergency medical assistance, but each year thousands of 9-1-1 medical calls are received from Montclair residents and businesses. Unexpected emergencies can result in costly medical bills. By subscribing to the EMS Subscription Program, you can protect yourself, your family, or employees against unexpected emergency medical service fees (this subscription does not cover ambulance transport costs). For more information, please contact the Montclair Fire Department at (909) 447-3540. FIRE DEPARTMENT SAFETY MESSAGE "Summertime Safety Tips" Fireworks Each Fourth of July, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer (Safe and Sane) fireworks. Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks - devastating burns, fires, and even death. The best way to enjoy fireworks is to visit a professional public display. All fireworks including Safe and Sane are illegal in Montclair and its sphere of influence. Grilling Safety Having family and friends over for a summertime barbeque should be a fun event. Increase the safety of your event by following these tips: • Keep a three-foot radius clear around your grill. • Designate this as a no-play zone for children or pets. • Propane and charcoal grills are for outdoor use only. If used inside, they could expose your family to toxic carbon monoxide, as well as pose a serious fire risk. • Do not wear loose fitting clothing while grilling. • Always use long handled grilling tools and never leave a lit grill unattended. Preventing Heat Related Illnesses PROPER USE OF 9-1-1 In the event of an emergency, call 9-1-1 for assistance. An emergency is considered an event or occurrence demanding immediate action, or any condition endangering life or property. For example, you may call 9-1-1 if you smell smoke; see a fire; witness or are involved in a serious vehicle accident; or if there is a serious medical emergency or potentially dangerous situation. Unfortunately, there are many instances where 9-1-1 has been dialed as a joke or a nuisance call. Dialing 9-1-1 is serious and calling unnecessarily may endanger someone else’s life or property! When dialing 9-1-1, give the dispatcher the following information: the phone number you are calling from, your name, your location, and the nature of the problem. Remain on the line until the dispatcher tells you it is okay to hang up. 22 While heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable, annually many people are affected by extreme heat. As temperatures start to rise this summer, follow these tips to increase your safety: • Drink plenty of fluids. • Wear loose-fitting clothing and sunglasses. • Reduce your exposure to the sun. • Do not leave people or animals in parked vehicles. • Use cool compresses, misting, showers, and baths. • Check on those at risk, especially children, seniors, or those who are ill. Swimming Pool Safety No matter how a child drowns, one thing is the same for all parents: the tragic seconds that claimed their child’s life slid by silently, without warning, and can never be brought back. Prevent children from drowning by providing adult supervision at all times and having a safety barrier that surrounds a pool or spa. A few things you can do to prepare for pool emergencies are: • Take a CPR class, • Learn rescue techniques, • Keep a phone near the pool area, and • Teach children good pool/spa habits. For more information on the topics listed above, please contact the Montclair Fire Department at (909) 447-3540. Fireworks on Fourth of July are an American past-time, but did you know that there are more than twice as many fires reported on that day, than on any other day of the year in the United States? Two out of every five of these fires are caused by fireworks. The good news is that you can enjoy your holiday and the fireworks with just a few simple safety tips: Leave fireworks to the ✓ professionals. Do not use consumer (Safe & Sane) fireworks. The safest way to enjoy ✓ fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals. Facts •Each 4th of July, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using Safe & Sane fireworks. •The risk of fireworks injuries is highest for children ages 5-14. •More than 80% of emergency room fireworks injuries involve the use of Safe & Sane fireworks. Examples of Illegal Fireworks: Sparklers Firecrackers Pin Wheels Bottle Rockets Roman Candles Sky Rockets Piccolo Petes Pagodas Fountains Snakes The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of more than 1,200°F, which is hot enough to cause 3rd-degree burns. All Fireworks including Safe & Sane are illegal in Montclair & its sphere of influence 23 facilities & registration CLASSES & WORKSHOPS Registration will be accepted at the Recreation Center weekdays.
