Animal Intake
Information
• We accept animals on a walk-in only system, only if space is
available, and never euthanize an animal to make room for others.
• The Animal Defense League is a private, nonprofit, no-kill shelter
for dogs and cats.
• We do not receive any tax dollars or support from the city or any
government agency.
• All animals must be adoptable and pass a health and behavioral
assessment before we agree to accept the animal.
• We are not able to accept any aggressive, feral, or sick animals.
• *Intake
times: Friday and Saturday | 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
• If we accept an animal there is a mandatory surrender fee to help
care for the animal and a pet profile must be filled out.
• We require a name and photo ID on all intakes screenings.
*effective July 12, 2012
Minimum Mandatory Surrender Fees
Kittens and puppies:
$20 (Each)
Cats and Dogs
(Over 16 weeks): $35
This fee helps pay for the cost of
spaying or neutering, vaccinating, housing
and caring for the animal while we work to
find a new and loving home.
The Animal Defense League is a
private, nonprofit 501 (c) (3) true, no kill
animal shelter. The Animal Defense
League cannot take in every abandoned,
stray, unwanted, and injured dog and cat.
We are limited by our kennel space and
by financial resources. We are continually
overwhelmed and saddened by the
number of unwanted and mistreated dogs
and cats in the San Antonio community.
Many days we have turn animals away
because we are at full capacity. We
cannot run the risk of disease outbreak
and animal stress through over-crowded
conditions.
The problem of unwanted, stray, and
neglected animals in Bexar County is a
community-wide problem that we are all
responsible for. By practicing
responsible pet ownership and spaying
and neutering your animals you can help
end the problem of pet overpopulation.
We ALL must address the animal situation
in our community or it will only continue to
get worse and more animals will suffer.
Thank you for your patience and
understanding as we try to help with the
unending problem of too many unwanted
pets in our community.

Lost Or Found A Pet
If you lose your pet or find a lost pet, here are some things that you can do to help
get the pet back home:
• Microchip your pet and update your contact information with your microchip
company every time there are changes.
• Take the animal to a local shelter or veterinarian to have the pet scanned for a
microchip.
• Call or visit local animal shelters to see if the pet you found has been reported as
lost or if your pet has been turned in.
• Place flyers out in the are the pet was found or check the area the pet was found
for fliers.
• Check the Express News for lost and found pet ads. They will also run a free ad
for lost found pets. Call 210.250.2345 for more details.
• Check Craigslist’s Lost/Found classified ads located in the Pets section for lost
and found pets. You can also post an ad for a lost/found pet for free.
The following websites also post lost and found pet ads. Check these pages and
