N E W S L E T T E R S P R I N G 2 0 1 6 Current work: The Cult of Unicorns Penny White’s adventures continue! I’ve been very pleased with the reaction thus far to Penny’s first adventure, ‘The Temptation of Dragons.’ I’m now over 60,000 words into the sequel, which will see her facing off threats to the magical country of Lloegyr and dangers emerging from that world. Her brother James, her Associate Morey (the gryphon with sarcasm management issues), and Clyde the snail shark will be alongside her to encourage and to exasperate. Then there’s the small matter of the humans found dead with a unicorn horn shaped hole in their backs, and the TV producer who wants to make a web series based on Penny’s blogs—and the extra church work at Christmas… In this Newsletter: Current work ‘Cult of Unicorns’ excerpt Two Countries Divided… Excerpt from ‘The Cult of Unicorns’ The Archdruid had also emerged, and the unicorn took a stand on my left. ‘You gave her the knife without a coin.’ ‘Without a coin,’ Raven agreed. Recent reviews of my novels Giveaways Who is your inspiration? The Archdruid eyed him. ‘That was hasty.’ His ears flicked. ‘Dragons aren’t known for their patience.’ ‘More is the pity,’ said the unicorn. ‘Father Penny and I were about to amicably settle our differences. A dragon invading our home vastly complicates matters.’ Read more on line Where to find me Subscribe and receive a free ebook! www.chryscymri.com "1 Two Countries Divided… Brit Speak I write British English. Perhaps no surprise there, as I’ve spent all of my adult life in the UK. I do try to keep aware of possible misunderstandings in the different use of English terms between the USA and the UK. So I avoid using ‘pants’ (the word for trousers in the USA, but the term for underwear in the UK) and ‘fanny’ (a polite word in the USA but a rude one-sorry!-in the UK). But one of my USA beta readers for ‘Temptation’ asked me ‘What’s a chemist?’ and I’m well aware that, when I write about Clyde’s love of chips, Americans might have potato chips in mind (which the British call ‘crisps’) rather than ‘French fries.’ I do wonder how I’m going to explain Christmas pudding or pantomime to any non British person… American Speak Brit Speak American Speak Biscuit Cookie Lorry Truck Chemist Drugstore Petrol Gas Plaster Band aid Spanner Wrench Loo/lavatory Bathroom/restroom Torch Flashlight Jumper Sweater Rubber Eraser Trainers Sneakers Nappy Diaper Recent Reviews ‘With probably one of the best opening scenes I’ve read in a long time Chrys Cymri’s new offering jumpstarts with uniqueness then just powers onwards. Join our reliable vicar as she navigates her way through the offerings from Lloegyr, the Welsh speaking alternate world where dragons are bishops and dog-sized snails have razor sharp teeth and a penchant for baby flesh, not to mention sarcastic gryphons and vampires with personal space sensitivity.’ on Goodreads ‘Knights and squires, Unicorns and Dragons, war, love, magic, lore and courtly tradition - this novel was a feast in every way. I felt myself absolutely drawn in to the world of the Four Kingdoms and the life and trials of the characters. The characters are very well-drawn indeed, I believed in them absolutely. The narrative is fast-paced and written in a style which is totally accessible and yet also richly descriptive.’ on amazon.com www.chryscymri.com Read More On-line Fianna, one of the main characters of ‘The Dragon Throne’ and ‘The Unicorn Throne,’ and Penny White of ‘The Temptation of Dragons’, are profiled and I am interviewed on https:// femmesfantastic.wordpress.com/ author-spotlight/chrys-cymri/. I particularly admire the writer’s analysis of Fianna. A review of ‘The Temptation of Dragons’ can be found on the blog https:// nightmarepoet.wordpress.com/ 2016/04/14/the-temptation-ofdragons-penny-white-book-1/ I have taken on board a couple of the criticisms and these will be addressed in the sequel! "2 S E Q U O I A C L U B Goodreads Giveaway ‘The Dragon Throne’ Goodreads Giveaway will start on 22 May and run until 3 June. I’m pleased that over 1000 people entered the last Giveaway, for ‘The Temptation of Dragons.’ I seem to have gained a number of new followers on my Goodreads account. ‘Penny White and the Temptation of Dragons’ is being offered for a second time on LibraryThing, as the last Giveaway was oversubscribed. Again this will be ebook only, and will be limited to 10 copies. Please do leave reviews for my books on Amazon and any other book sites you use. Reviews are vital for self published authors. ‘Who is your inspiration?’ Like any writer, I am often asked ‘Where do you get your ideas from? Who is your inspiration for your characters?’ My first Penny White novel was dedicated to my beloved parrot, Xander, who tragically died on Christmas Eve last year. I now share my life with Tilly, who is a green cheek conure. She is a very lively and active girl, who needs to be kept busy or she gets into mischief! More and more her personality is shaping Clyde’s in ‘The Cult of Unicorns.’ And Penny’s concern about the conditions in which she’s keeping the snail shark reflect my own worries about giving Tilly a happy and fulfilling life. What the little bird thinks of inspiring the characterisation of a snail who rips garden birds apart for breakfast is not yet known… Where can you find out more? My website, www.chryscymri.com.
