When calculating travel time for certain distances, don’t
forget to add in your viewing hours. As you drive, ask
the locals how long it takes to the next stop. Keep extra
refreshments with you, especially further north where
towns are more isolated.

The flowers always face the sun. Try and drive towards
the sun to enjoy nature’s dazzling display. When viewing
flowers on foot, stand with the sun behind your back.
Certain flowers don’t open when it’s overcast.

To view the flowers at their best, choose the hottest
time of the day, which is from 11h00 to 15h00. It’s the
extended flower power hour. Respect the flower
paradise: Walk with care and don’t trample plants
unnecessarily. Please don’t pick any buds, bulbs or
specimens, nor disturb any sensitive dune areas.

The Northern Cape prides itself on its diverse tourism
offerings ranging from extreme culture, extreme adventure
and extreme nature – and these are never more evident than
during its majestic floral displays. Late winter and spring are
the perfect times to visit this vast province as the sunny days
and cool nights are the perfect backdrop for a perfect
breakaway under the African skies.
The province is located in the north-eastern area of South
Africa and borders on neighbouring countries Namibia and
Botswana. The 360 000 square kilometres of the province is
divided into five regions, namely Diamond Fields, Karoo,
Green Kalahari, Kalahari and Namakwa. A visit to the
Northern Cape is bound to be entrenched with rich cultural
engagements, amazing outdoor adventures and incredible
encounters with the bounty of Mother Nature.
The Northern Cape prides itself on its incredible archaeological
heritage with the traces of ancient tribes like the San (Bushmen),
Nama and Griqua entrenched in the rural landscapes across the
province. Intrepid travellers can venture to areas like
Riemvasmaak or the Kalahari to experience the lifestyle of the
first inhabitants of these seemingly desolate areas.
Superbly splendiferous is the only way to describe the
Namakwa region in spring. When the annual floral
spectacular hits this normally arid region between July and
September each year, its magnificent beauty transcends the
nature offerings of other parts of Southern Africa.
The amazing floral display of the Namakwa has earned itself
a place as a global botanical wonder. As part of the
Succulent Karoo, the Namakwa is considered to be the
richest bulb flora arid region in the world as well as the most
diverse, arid environment on the planet.
Visitors to the region can experience the greatest flower
show on earth with an estimated 3000 plant species of
which more than 50% are indigenous to the region. The
wild flowers of the Namakwa are an unforgettable natural
phenomenon and best discovered on foot, which makes it
ultimately appealing to keen photographers, hikers and
outdoor enthusiasts.
Experience the Namakwa in all its floral finery as the
landscape is covered with a flamboyant spread of wild
flowers. Popular flower spots include the Goegap Nature
Reserve in Springbok, the Namakwa National Park near
Kamieskroon and the world’s bulb capital in Niewoudtville.
Bloom hunters are advised to contact the Flower hotline on
+27 (0)79 294 7260 or the various tourism offices in the
region to keep track of the peak blooming areas or to visit
www.experiencenortherncape.com for the latest flower
updates.
The vast open spaces inherent to the Northern Cape definitely
resonates with outdoor adventurers with amazing opportunities
offered by the mighty Orange River for water adventures,
hiking, adventure motor-biking, 4x4-safaris and game viewing
throughout the province and even perfect seaside holidays.
Cape West Coast Tourism
Even star-gazers will find the Northern Cape the perfect
destination. The Southern African Astronomical
Observatory (SALT) in Sutherland opens a galactic
wonderland of star-studded splendour and the quaint town
of Canarvon is now home to the world-renowned SKA
telescope, which promises to uncover ancient galaxies.
Arctotis fastuosa (Bittergousblom)
This proud flower can be found
growing abundantly in the Tankwa
National Park during springtime.
Colchicum sp. (Cup-and-Saucer)
Jordaaniella cuprea (Rankvygie)
This gorgeous creeping succulent
blooms from July to August.
This beautiful flower is well known as
the pride of the flower route .

Between July and October each year, the sun-baked
plains and sandstone mountains of the West Coast
metamorphose into a kaleidoscope of brilliant colour as
the veld gives rise to the world renowned wild flowers.
The roadsides and wetlands are filled with the last
patches of Arum Lillies and white Rain Daisies herald the
arrival of spring, jostling with tiny yellow Button Daisies,
Blue Flax and pink Nemesias. Look out for the daintier,
sometimes hidden Winecups, Sparaxis, Lechenalia and
Babiana flowers. Good rains will ensure that the carpets
of flowers last well into October and multi-coloured
Vygies, Watsonias and fields of orange and yellow
‘Stinkkruid” will await you too.
The Mother City lies in the heart of the Cape Floral
Kingdom – the smallest and richest of the earth’s six
floristic kingdoms. It’s the only city in the world with a
1000 metre high mountain on its doorstep. With a
Biodiversity Garden on the Green Point Common, plus
the world-renowned Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens at
the foot of Table Mountain, and easily accessible
mountain walking trails, a visit to the Cape Peninsula has
something for everyone’s level of fitness.

self-drive excursions. Our incredible province promises
visitors unforgettable memories, but above all the
traditional warm hospitality of our people will make visitors
feel like family and entice you back again and again.
Cape Town has numerous walking clubs, conservation
groups and societies that welcome visitors who have a
shared interest in combining outdoor walks with the
enjoyment of viewing flowers growing in their natural
habitat. Each season brings its own surprises, with
spring flowers extending well into November.
In summer, you will find Red Disas and indigenous
orchids on the mountain peaks, with rare Ericas and
Buchus covering the mountain slopes or clinging to
waterfall gulleys. The best time for a wild flower walk is
the first sunny day after a rainy spell.

South Africa’s largest province is an absolutely must-see
destination, but a visit to this vast province during the
annual flower season is a bucket-list item for any nature lover
or outdoor enthusiast. From July to September each year,
this traditionally arid region is transformed into a floral
extravaganza incomparable to anywhere else on the globe.
West Coast
Experience the magic of the Namakwa and West Coast in full
bloom. The flower season runs from July until late October,
but peak viewing periods and blooming areas are weather
dependent. The winter rains and prevailing winds influence
where and when the best blooms occur. Normally, the first
floral displays can be seen up north with the spread of flowers
moving south as the season continues. For tips on the most
spectacular flower hotspots, call the Flower Hotlines on +27
(0)72 938 8186 for the West Coast and +27 (0)79 294 7260 for
Namakwa.
