New Logo!! - Family Service, Inc.
SPRING 2016 New Logo!! Family Service is delighted to share our new logo. We think it is a happier, more modern and more inclusive look. We particularly love the new tagline: Feed, Furnish, Fortify—it says what we do so succinctly. With your wonderful help, we are growing rapidly and this new look helps define and usher in a new era! WHY? IT TAKES A VILLAGE – SO TRUE TODAY! Family structure changed a lot in the last 40 years. With your generous help, we are privileged to help families led by grandparents, mom only, dad only, aunts and uncles and, of course, traditional families too. Another huge part of the work at Family Service includes helping senior citizens and those living with disability. We welcome all people who are struggling and need help with the most basic, vital necessities. With your help, the Family Service umbrella shelters and protects. Senior Food Box Delivery Service Expands Again Rolling, Rolling, Rolling! Thanks to the Walmart Foundation and their state giving committee, we have anew refrigerated truck! A new truck helps us provide food for so many struggling families– WOOHOO! Six days a week, we are on the road, picking up food from area grocery stores, discount centers, bakeries and other retail locations. Then the food is distributed in bountiful, beautiful food boxes within 2-4 days to families, seniors, individuals and other organizations. Walmart wants to be sure we can maximize these precious food resources, to help more people. So, they bought us a new, deluxe, refrigerated truck! We are so grateful—and want to thank all our truck donors AND our food donors! Stability is the first step out of poverty and food starts the process! With your help, the Family Service umbrella shelters and protects. We lovedonors! our Dr. Seuss, Amelia Bedelia and Teen Birthday Books too! We have a new program, Birthday Books. Thanks to a very generous anonymous donor, Family Service can help children celebrate their special day. Many families ask for a special cake to celebrate a family birthday, when they receive their food box. Now, a special gift of a brand new book can be added for the birthday child too! A selection of lovely books for children of all ages and a beautiful gift bag and coordinating tissue were donated by two mothers who know the power of receiving a little gift from your parents. Thank you to our donors who give hundreds of children the gift of quiet entertainment and imagination! YOUR GIFTS HELPED! “I don’t need to be afraid anymore.” An older lady was finally able to access low-income senior housing, her first apartment in years. She came to Family Service requesting help to pay the deposit. She told us this apartment meant two main things to her: to be clean again whenever she wants, and to not be afraid anymore. While she was homeless, living on the streets, she was victimized repeatedly, and needed secure hiding places where she would not be found. An apartment was a godsend! Your gifts allowed us to help. A new and exciting way to support the work of Family Service music, music, music! On Friday, May 20th, a concert at the Pub Station to support all the programs of Family Service, especially our food box program. The party starts at 7:00 pm with Patrick Michaelis, acoustical guitar soloist, followed by Josephine Sunrise and, playing at 9:00 pm, The Wench! Three bands for $15 in advance online at the Pub Station or $20 at the door…what an amazing deal and so much fun! Raffles round out the night, so c’mon and dance! 2 | 2016 Spring Newsletter www.famserv.com/donate FAMILY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS PRESIDENT Allan Karell VICE PRESIDENT Mike Dimich SECRETARY Lynda Ballard TREASURER Bill Brown PAST PRESIDENT Mike Palmer DIRECTORS John Crist Colette Davies Wayne Erlenbush John Heenan Ric Heldt John Hurley Dr. George Knight Kelly McCandless Ed McIntosh Russell Pierce Shane Richards John Walsh Brandon Wittman Mike Vicars* *Non-voting Foundation Board liaison Not Afraid Anymore Rock N’ Relief Please give generously! YOUR GIFTS HELPED! She’s GREAT! We are seeing more grandparents being primary caretakers of children…but how about GREAT grandparents?? Family Service saw a great-grandma bring in her six great-grandchildren for back to school help. Asking was so difficult for her…she never had to look for assistance before. Unique and painful personal situations had landed her great-grandchildren in her home while she is on a fixed income. Your donations eased this financial situation, creating bountiful backpacks and generous food boxes. A Fresh Start USPS Food Drive One poignant story we heard came from a family who risked everything for a fresh start. En route home to begin again, Suzanne’s car engine quit just outside Billings, never to start again. Waiting for family help to arrive, this single mom and her children spent all their funds on a low-cost motel. It never came. She started working and after about 2 years qualified to move into an apartment, but did not have funds to pay for the deposit. She had been receiving food from Family Service, and with your help, we were able to help Suzanne and her children settle in their own new space. They created their fresh start in Billings. Suzanne is tremendously grateful for the help that she receives here at because of you! SATURDAY, MAY 14 On May 14, a nationwide food drive will take place, helping struggling families and seniors through the summer. Last year, Family Service worked with the Ronald Reagan Heights postal workers and the Centennial station postal workers—gathering over 15,000 pounds of food! All those canned goods were distributed in food boxes by the end of July—helping families make ends meet. We will work with the same stations again this year—59105 and 59106 are the ones supporting the Family Service food drive—we hope to beat last year’s record! Thank you to the postal carriers and all the generous people who will donate! YOUR GIFTS HELPED! The Invisible Poor Should you know about Family Service in 1st grade? Family Service directors Stacy and Jane had the joyful task of spending time with first graders. One little girl lit up when she recognized Family Service, she raised her hand and said, “I know you. I come there with my grandma. We love Family Service, that is where my grandma gets our food for dinner.” A second child remarked that he got his coat and jeans there. Another child said, “We don’t have any furniture yet, but my mom said she is going to Family Service to get a bed and a couch or chair for our house.” Most children in Billings know Target or Rimrock Mall; these children know Family Service. When children know you, you know needs are being met – only because of you! We he Rimrock Subaru Superheroes! Subaru’s Share the Love campaign, a program where purchasers of new Subaru autos can designate a $250 donation from Subaru National to charity took place in November and December 2015. Family Service has been so fortunate to be selected by Rimrock Subaru to be their local partner! This year’s presentation blew us out of the water: WOW! The impact is huge! Subaru funds will allow more food to go in nutritious food boxes and will help more people remain stable in their homes. What an exciting and amazing gift—from all the management and sales staff at Rimrock Subaru, who worked so hard in those months to exceed their sales goals, so that our community can benefit! Subaru established a program that really makes a difference in their communities! Thank YOU! Senior Food Box Delivery Service Expands Again! Through the generous gift of time by many volunteers, Family Service bountiful, beautiful, nutritious food boxes are being delivered to 189 seniors each month! This much-needed service provides low-income seniors who can still care for themselves in their homes, but no longer have reliable transportation, the chance to have enough food to keep body and soul together. We continue to have a waiting list for this program. We would like to continue expansion but food and volunteers are needed! Last month, we added 13 ladies, living in Heights senior apartments. Their situations are similar to all the seniors we serve. One lady had $490 in total income each month, one had $440, and all have made the choice many times to pay for prescriptions instead of food. None of the 13 receive food stamps (SNAP). One lady burst into tears when she learned that we would be delivering a food box just for her—and it is only possible through your generous donations!
