WELCOME TO

The mayors’ TEDx thoughts:
MAYBE WE COULD DEVELOP NEW THINKING
PATTERNS?
Einar Halvorsen, mayor of Arendal:
TEDxArendal has really delivered
in the events they have done from
2013, with good quality, exciting
speaks and in a wonderful frame.
It looks like TED as a concept, is
filling an important function in the
knowledge-society of today.
And I believe the persons in
charge of TEDxArendal have really
hit a nerve.

Wednesday 23 September is the day we will become a little
bit wiser and learn things we never realised we wanted to
know. A series of short speeches will enlighten us on topics
ranging from what sort of food we will eat in the future to
violence in family relations.
The fact that a small town like Arendal is capable of a
professional event such as TEDx, means that we have
something more to offer than just old wooden houses and a
picturesque coastline.
Life is best when
it´s a bit strange.

What is the idea behind
TEDxArendal or TED itself?
First off we need to explain the
difference between TED and TEDx:
About TEDx, x = independently
organized event In the spirit of
ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a
program of local, self-organized
events that bring people together
to share a TED-like experience.

A R E NDA L
INNOVASJON
ARENDAL
These local, self-organized events
are branded TEDx, where x =
independently organized TED
event.
The TED Conference provides
general guidance for the TEDx
program, but individual TEDx
events are self-organized.
(Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
What is TED?
What is TEDxArendal?
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to
Ideas Worth Spreading.
TEDxArendal is simply put a local version
of a TED-conference. We get a licence to
run each year, for all of the events, and
have to go trough certain criterias to fulfill
the demands that follow.
Started as a four-day conference in
California almost 30 years ago, TED has
grown to support those world-changing
ideas with multiple initiatives.
The two annual TED Conferences invite
the world’s leading thinkers and doers to
speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of
topics. Many of these talks are then made
available, free, at TED.com.
TED speakers have included Bill Gates,
Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard
Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck,
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and
former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
TED’s media initiatives include TED.com,
where new TED Talks are posted daily; the
Open Translation Project, which provides
subtitles and interactive transcripts as well
as translations from volunteers worldwide;
the educational initiative TED-Ed; and TEDBooks, short e-books on powerful ideas.
This is to ensure that the quality of the
program and show is always at its best,
and that the name of “TED” is not abused
in any ways – For instance to spread
political messages or to sell products..
This years TEDxArendal is sold out.

MacGregor Pusnes

TEDxArendal fills a need for knowledge and
reflexion. The fact that TEDxArendal has
delivered a meaningful experience these
past few years is probably the most important reason why this years event was so
quickly sold out.
People from Arendal and the southern region
in general, have a history of being curios and
outgoing.
The export and shipping business, contact
with foreign cultures as well as the flow of
labour and knowledge sharing are examples
of this.
We support TEDxArendal because we find
the TEDx concept exciting, and it gives us a
chance to refresh our southern region with
inspiring ideas, fantastic stories and positive
energy. We recognise TED’s ”Ideas Worth
Spreading” in our daily challenges and try
to live by this to continuously improve our
business and help our customers.
For us in MacGregor Pusnes, the key to
staying in business has been inspiration and
innovation through several hundreds of years
with different products and industries.
The inhabitants and the region, and a
business like ours, will benefit and enjoy
challenging our understanding of the world
around us, and that’s what will happen at
an event like TEDx.
There are many reasons why TEDxArendal
has become such a popular event. Partly it’s
because of the short, intense and exciting
speeches made by skilled presenters, and
partly due to the vast range of topics and
areas that offers something for everyone.
What is really astonishing is perhaps how
the majority of the speeches actually hits t
he majority of the audience.
TEDx is a different concept, and many
people still don’t know about it. When more
people do discover it, we might need to
have several performances at the concert
hall instead of just one. TEDx isn’t like a
regular seminar or course with a defined
learning objective. You go there bringing
curiosity and expectations, and know that
a thoroughly professional event awaits with
new knowledge and reflexions.
THE BACKSTAGE
PSYCHOLOGIST
100 volunteers ensure a smooth execution of
TEDxArendal. Oskar Blakstad deals with stage fright
and thirst – and makes relaxed speakers nervous.
What is the best part of being a
TEDx volunteer?
- Without a doubt meeting so many
great people! Volunteers, speakers,
audience – the amount of fantastic
people attracted to this event really
gives you back the belief in
humanity.
How do you calm the speakers?
It is really important to allow the
speakers to stick to their own
routines and not force any contact.
Some of the speakers prefer not to
talk to me at all, and that is fine!
Then I just leave them to it and try
to be there for them if they need
anything later. Others, on the can
help them get out of disaster
mode or teach them quick relaxing
techniques. With limited time I can
only do so much, but it is important
to help the speakers reach ”the
optimal stress level”.
The objective is not necessarily
getting them nervous, but helping
them achieve a stress level where
the brain performs well.
A little nervousness actually
improves the presentation. Some
speakers don’t need calming, but
winding up if they’re not nervous
enough.
Creating a good atmosphere
beforehand, backstage and
between the speakers is
equally important.
”
You can make big
things happen in
a small town too.
We find the whole concept interesting
and believe it will benefit our region. It’s
a positive initiative we enjoy supporting.
The event draws important people to
the region that puts us on the map, says
Asbjørn Udjus from Sparebanken Sør,
one of the three main TEDxArendal
partners, DNB and Arendal municipality
being the two others.
INNOVATION
Innovation, fresh thoughts and
entrepreneurship are all good reasons
for being part of this. We are happy to
be associated with a positive initiative
like TEDxArendal.
Last year we attended as audience, but
this year we realised we had to become
partners, says Bjørnar Larssen. He will
fill a busload of customers, employees,
students and connections from
Kristiansand and Grimstad who want to
attend the event.
Partnering with our competitor in the
bank industry only shows the
importance of the event in the region.
We both want to be on the inside where
it’s all happening.
BUILDING THE REPUTATION
TEDx has become a new commercial
development method reaching new and
exciting people. This way we can build
relationships between the trade industry
and important people in the region. TEDx
appeals to the younger generations and
contributes to Arendal’s reputation as an
energetic and proactive municipality,
says municipal trade official Kåre
Andersen.
Kåre Andersen
He has had the TEDx license since
2013. Two years ago he threw himself
into something completely unknown, but
now he is well acquainted with TEDx and
has already found some TEDx speaker
favourites. In order to obtain the license,
he needed to attend a TEDx conference
in Vancouver.
- It was really inspiring. I realised that
TEDx plays an important role in the
world, Andersen says.
NOT JUST THE SIZE
Kåre has also learnt that
it’s not just the size of
the town that counts.
-There is no need to live
in Oslo to create
something big. You can
make big things happen
in a small town too,
he states.
- It’s extremely important to
us to appear professional.
We have an excellent board
with a number of professional
and capable people contributing.
We must ensure enthusiasm and
vitality in the project, and it should
never become a municipal undertaking.
We are just the facilitators,
he emphasises.

SPEAKING
OF WHAT..
Kaj Török, realistic views on our future habits
What does the future look like for us
consumers? Will you eat red meat in
2030? Can we travel to and from our office
each day and still achieve a carbon
reduction?
Is vacation by plane a luxury, or did
technology solve the emission problems?
-We can not predict the future, but we can
buy it, says Kaj Török, who will speak at
TEDxArendal.
Török is a future optimist. He thinks our
positive development, with ecofriendly food
and cars, is the future-oriented products in
the marked. The products people want.
By now, people picks more and more green
products from shops.
JOINT EFFORT
FOR TEDx
From being “TED what”, TEDxArendal has become a must for
the economic trade. History in the making. Sparebanken Sør
and DNB are working together for the first time.
El-cars are selling more. We are talking
about sustainability over the lunch-table
and gourmet-restaurants use ecological
products and less red meat.
Kaj Török works at Futerra, and is an expert
in predicting changes in society. His talk
will share some realistic views on what
habits you and me will change the coming
years, and how our society will gradually
adopt new thoughts and ideas to cope with
challenges for this new millennium.
- Hear his talk at TEDxArendal.

can buy it.
If I have 18 minutes:
I will snorkle with my kids.
.
Last book: ”Sapiens” by Yuval Noah Harari
Best TEDx-speak: That I´ve seen most
times, is about the passion of motivation.
It´s about the motive power of humanity.
Before I enter the stage: I´m thinking that it
will be lovely to finally meet the audience.
