• Became Widespread by 1940’s
• Most Photos of Soviet WW-II Pilots Shown Wearing This Type of Goggles
Goggles with similar appearance to genuine WW-II flight goggles differ
in a couple of small details. These goggles are post war, and are not
meant to be worn by pilots, lacking small metal air channels on top outer
sides of frames. The top rubber cover has writing starting with "GOST.“

• Made of Soft Black Leather and Built-In Earphones, Which Are Covered with

–One Connects to Throat Microphone and Other Connects to Aircraft Comm System
• Early ShL-50 Helmet Did Not Have Hooks for Oxygen Mask
• Later ShL-50s Were Equipped with Hooks - Either Round or Similar to Those on
ShL-61 Helmets, for Soviet Primary Oxygen Mask (KM-15)
• Two Additional Versions of ShL-50 Were Produced
–ShZ-50: Winter Version with Fur Attached to Inside of Helmet
–ShLO-50: Tropical Version with Top of Helmet Made of Mesh Instead of Leather
Realizing the need for a helmet with built-in communication equipment,
the Soviets designed a new helmet, the ShL-50.

• Popularized During the Two World Wars (WW-I and WW-II)
• Worn by Aviators for Practical Reasons, Not Just for Appearance, for Three Reasons:
–Shielding from the Cold
–Wiping Off Engine Oil Spray
–Protection from Neck Chaffing
• Typical Dimensions: 6 ft long and 14” wide
–Why so long? Open Cockpits at 12,000 ft and 100 mph: Very Windy and Very Cold
• Scarves Were Chosen to Provide Thermal Insulation and Chafing from Leather Jacket’s Collar
• So Long as to be Wrapped around the Neck Many Times
–Pilots Wore Thick Leather Jacket and Leather Flying Cap
–For the Neck, the Pilot Had Two options: a Thick and Tall Collar or a Scarf
• Since Pilot Frequently Turned His Head to Spot the Enemy, the Solution Had to Handle the Cold
and Maintain Maneuverability
• Used to Wipe Engine Oil Spray from Pilot’s Goggles
–Free Ends Had to be Available Even after Looping Them Many Times Around Neck for Warmth
• Favorite Materials:
–Material Had to be Light, Soft to the Skin, but Strong Enough to Withstand Battering of Strong Winds
