Kokanee Gear For Ocean Kings? Y ou read the headline correctly and it’s kinda funny isn’t it…Way back when tackle manufacturers and anglers got serious about targeting kokanee, (land locked sockeye salmon) they turned their eyes to the gear saltwater salmon trollers were using, downsized it and started trolling…Guess what? Those mini-dodgers and tiny spoons worked great for landlocked salmon and trout and today a whole industry has been built around this style of ultra light freshwater trolling. A few years back I started noticing a trend on Norcal charter boats. Guys were employing kokanee size dodgers. With ocean salmon seasons suspended the first guys using these small dodgers were trolling for early season halibut. When ocean salmon fishing kicked back into gear two years ago, some of those same anglers deployed their mini dodgers while targeting ocean kings and found that they worked for big salmon just as well as they work for big halibut. Last season I really saw an increase of momentum in terms of the amount of “trout and kokanee” gear I saw deployed from the decks of charter boats. It seems things have come full circle. Kids are wearing bell bottoms again…The 80’s seem a lot cooler than they by Cal Kellogg actually were and now the tiny dodgers that were knock offs of larger ocean salmon gear have now returned to the ocean….If you haven’t tried kokanee gear in the salt yet, you should plan on using it in 2013, ‘cause it will help you catch more fish! Here’s how… Small Dodgers And Lake Trolls For Ocean Salmon Traditionally if you wanted to run a salmon dodger from a charter boat you were forced to fish off the back of the boat where that big 10 to 12 inch surfboard like blade making it’s huge lateral sweeps wouldn’t tangle other lines. These days by employing 4 to 6 inch trout and kokanee size dodgers you can utilize the fish attracting flash and vibration of a dodger from any position on the boat. These dodgers don’t have the big sweep and large size of traditional salmon dodgers. Provided you manage your line well, tangles won’t be an issue. By line management I’m talking about the amount of line you let out. On any charter boat, when you troll for salmon the shallowest lines have to be on the bow and the lines need to get gradually deeper to the back of the boat. Up until recently if you wanted to pull artificials for ocean salmon you reached for large Apex style lures or large hoochies. These work great most of the time, but when the fish are not cooperating sometimes small spoons like the Kingfisher Lite spoons shown here will draw strikes when nothing else will. Photo by CAL KELLOGG, Fish Sniffer Staff. The skipper will tell you how deep to fish based on your position. Follow his instructions to the letter in terms of how much line you let out and tangles will be minimal. Before I talk about my favorite small dodgers and colors for ocean salmon trolling let’s take a moment to consider proper rigging. A basic charter boat bait trolling rig looks like this…Your main line is tied to a sinker release. To the rear of the release a 6 foot snap adorned leader is attached and a rigged baitfish is connected to the end of the leader via the snap. If you want to employ a small dodger with this rig, you simply split the leader right in the middle and put a dodger in that spot. Since you are using a rigged baitfish that has a spinning action of it’s own the dodger doesn’t need to be close to the bait. The role of the dodger isn’t to give action to the bait in this situation. Instead the hope is that the vibrations and flash put off by the dodger will catch the eye of a salmon and the action of your “crippled” baitfish will do the rest! Rigged this way and trolled at charter boat speeds don’t expect your dodger to move the same way it does when used with light gear at kokanee speeds. The heavy leader both above and below the dodger tends to kill the sweeping action, but the relative high speed of the troll (charter boats tend to troll at about 3 mph) will give the blade a quick, erratic vibration. Salmon are super sensitive to movements within the water column and often that little bit of vibration can make a tremendous difference in the amount of strikes you get. My dodger collection for charter boating is pretty limited, but this isn’t kokanee fishing. You don’t need every color combination known to man. I get by with a few models, sizes and colors and you can too. My favorite dodgers are the Gold Star/Silver Horde dodgers in the 6, 5 1/8 and 3 7/8 inch sizes, Sep’s dodgers in the 2/0, 3/0 and 4/0 sizes and Shasta Tackle Sling Blades in the 4 and 6 inch sizes. As far as colors go, keep things basic. Chrome is always a great choice. As are chrome combinations like chrome/ blue and chrome/green. Watermelon and glow pearl are must have as are some offerings with orange or red in them. When the salmon are feeding on krill red and orange colors will draw a lot of strikes. If the kings are feeding on krill my first choice is always a bright orange medium size Silver Horde. In terms of Sling Blade colors, I really like the UV green finish but the tried and true green herringbone over chrome works very well too. Small dodgers can help you get extra strikes when the going gets tough or even when the bite is good, but if you really want to blow the mind of the salmon dig deeper into your kokanee tackle and fish out a set of chartreuse Vance’s Slim Willie Dodgers. Almost no one runs these off a charter boat and you’ll need to fish them off the back to avoid tangles. When you rig up with these “lake trolls” guys will think you’re crazy, but when you start hooking salmon they’ll be buying their own set of Slim Willies as soon as they get back on land! When rigging up with flashers. You’ll want to run a 30 inch leader between the release and the flashers and a 18 inch leader from the back of your flashers to the rigged bait. If you’re a private boater and want to have some fun run a set of Slim Willies trailing half a plug cut anchovy on an outfit armed with leadcore line. Top line the rig back 100 to 150 feet and run your other lines off the VOL. 32 • ISS. 8 downriggers as you ordinarily do. You’ll be surprised how often that the leadcore rig gets slammed! Small Lures That Tempt Big Kings While small dodgers are starting to see widespread use on the ocean salmon grounds, there are some small lures, traditionally considered “trout lures” that are starting to gain traction. Most days it isn’t necessary to break out small lures to get strikes, but when the bite is off and the salmon have lockjaw, sometimes micro offerings are the only thing that will draw strikes. Small spoons and small hoochies can be used for this work. My favorite “small” spoon is the Silver Horde Kingfisher Lite. The KingFisher Lite, or KFL comes in 3 different sizes. The No. 3 measures 5/8” x 2 5/8”, the No. 3.5 is 7/8” wide and 3” long, while the No. 4 is 7/8” x 3 3/8”. I don’t have any No. 3 spoons, but I have a bunch of 3.5s and 4s. KFLs do an exceptional job of imitating a wounded baitfish. The folks at Silver Horde have been turning out topnotch fishing gear for over 50 years, so they know how to design an effective spoon. The special shape built into the KFL gives it a really seductive swimming motion. For me shape and action are the two most important cues when it comes to generating strikes, but color plays SALTWATER JOURNAL MAR. 29 - APR. 12 • 2013 23 a factor too. I give the KFL two thumbs up in terms of silhouette and action. The fact that the KFL lineup includes a long list of both utilitarian and creative finishes is only icing on the cake. Big hoochies in the 4 to 8 inch class have been the fodder of salmon anglers for many years and they can be deadly effective, but so can smaller hoochies in the 2 to 3 inch size class. For this work my hands down favorite hoochies are the Gold Star Mini Sardine with a length of 2 ¼ inches and the 2 inch Ace Hi Fly Junior, which is basically a hoochie with extra flash and a plastic head. Bait fish colors like blue or purple over pearl are my first choice when I break out my hoochie assortment, but at times bright pinks and oranges will get hit when nothing else will. Experiment! When it comes to fishing nothing is written in stone. Experimentation is the key to really honing your skills. This season before you hit the salmon grounds, drop by the tackle shop and pick up a little micro gear. Before the season is over you’ll be out when the fishing is a little tough. When you walk off the boat with your limit of chrome bright kings you’ll be glad you bought that “kokanee stuff”….. Farallon Boats: 35th Anniversary Building Boats This week, Farallon Boats completed construction on a brand new 3200 Farallon Explorer specifically configured for the U.S. Military. The boat is set up with twin 250 hp Honda outboards which gives it a top speed in calm waters at around 39 knots. The vessel is equipped with a custom towing bit, search lights, power assist winch and davit, second steering station, enlarged double back sliding doors, and Flir - night vision in addition to other more standard electronics. In the cabin there is room for a full gurney and ample room under that for all necessary medical and rescue equipment. According to Renee Carter of Farallon Boats, “It gives us great satisfaction to build equipment for our military personnel. This boat is well equipped for its intended purpose.” Besides building superior work boats for governmental agencies right here in California, they also have been busy constructing sport and commercial fishing boats for 35 years. Boats range in size from 23’ to 32’ and all are trailerable. Farallon Boats builds semi-custom boats, sold only factory direct, out of West Sacramento, California. The original in-line flasher, Big Al’s Fish Flash continues to deliver stellar results in fresh and saltwater. Charter skippers throughout British Columbia, Washington, Alaska and Oregon have made Big Al’s Fish Flash their go-to flasher and now California charter captains and guides are finding the same success in their home waters. Just in the past year, Yakima Bait Company, the maker of Big Al’s Fish Flash and a number of other iconic brands like Rooster Tail, FlatFish, Hildebrandt and others, has made several important improvements to Fish Flash. These changes include brass grommets for added strength and freedom of movement; welded rings for strength and consistent action; injection molding to assure consistency that can’t be achieved through cold bending the plastic body; ball bearing swivels; and rounded edges to prevent any possibility of fraying your line. While all of these changes have enhanced the effectiveness of Big Al’s Fish Flash the most productive addition to the 2013 line has been the addition of new UV finishes. The actual plastic is UV impregnated, as is the tape, which provides even greater attraction to salmon in low-light conditions. Introduced last summer, these UV finishes have proved themselves thousands of times as guides and charter captains enjoyed increased productivity. The “High Octane” finish proved to be particularly effective, right along with “Morning Glory”, “Winner”, “Knock-Out” and “Money”. Still, many of the standard finishes continue to work their magic. Those include, “Red and Lazer Chartreuse”, “Red”, “Hyper Plaid”, and “Chartreuse and Lime Bomb” are all staple choices for Chinook and coho salmon. Certainly, the smaller 6” Fish Flash have found their fleet of fans in California, but the 8” and 10” sizes generate more flash and attraction, ideal attributes for saltwater fisheries. As the water warms in the rivers and estuaries scaling down in size makes good sense but early in the season, in the ocean, throwing caution to the wind and bulking up is a fish catching advantage. Finally, be sure to experiment with leader lengths to optimize your success. Generally, and for most fisheries, running 48” to 55” leaders is just fine. If you’re marking fish and not hitting them try lengthening your leaders. Or, if you’re fishing deep or under low-light conditions you may want to shorten your leader length to 40” to 44”. The fact is, these flashers work and they work well, so finding the colors and rigging best suited to the waters you’re fishing is essential in getting the most out of your Big Al’s Fish Flash. Anglers and divers need to be aware of a number of new fishing regulations that are in effect this year. Regulation changes include the following: new size and bag limits for kelp bass, sand bass and spotted bass, and new at-sea fillet size requirements for these basses and ocean whitefish. Changes also include new regulations for groundfish (including rockfish), northern California marine protected areas, and sturgeon. Regulation changes are highlighted throughout the booklet for quick reference. Effective March 1, 2013, new size, bag, and fillet size limits are in effect for kelp bass, sand bass, and spotted sand bass. Bass must now be at least 14 inches total length or 10 inches alternate length (measured from base of foremost spine of dorsal fin to longest tip of tail), and fillets must be at least 7 ½ inches long and retain a 1 inch square patch of skin when filleted at sea. The new bag limit for these basses is five fish in combination. New marine protected areas (MPAs) are now in effect in northern California, from the California/ Oregon border to Alder Creek, near Point Arena. For more information, visit http://www.dfg. ca.gov/mlpa, or the MPA mobile website at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/m/MPA, or a northern California CDFW office. New sturgeon fishing regulations established a new method of measuring sturgeon and a new size limit of 40 to 60 inches fork length (not total length, as before). Barbless hooks are required when fishing for sturgeon and snares are prohibited. Fish longer than 68 inches fork length may not be removed from the water. For more information: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler. ashx?DocumentID=58288&inline=1 New seasons, bag and size limits, and species allowed for take have been established for groundfish. For more information: http:// cdfgnews.wordpress.com/2013/02/22/newrecreational-groundfish-regulations-effectivemarch-1/ Also effective March 1, 2013, fillets from ocean whitefish filleted at sea must now measure at least 6 ½ inches long, and the entire skin must remain intact. For the complete set of new and updated ocean sport fishing regulations, CDFW recommends picking up a copy of the new 2013-2014 regulations booklet. Booklets are also available online at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/ sportfishing_regs2013.asp. Here’s some advice on how to keep it simple and fish proven basics or go prepared to throw everything including the kitchen sink at them. I converted to soft-sided tackle bags when Albackore came out with them and my favorite for rockfish is the Altunative model. If you have a trusted storage system that has at least 3 utility trays then you will be prepared to cover most of your options when it comes to gearing up. Make sure it’s sturdy too. Fully loaded mine usually weighs in between 20-25 pounds. I also recommend loading the heaviest items at the bottom to add to stability especially in rough weather. Essential items for a successful day of fishing for rockfish start with needle nose pliers, scissors for braided line (I have been using Owner’s supercut scissors for years and I take them everywhere), a hook sharpener, extra line, a bottle or tube of scent, spare skirts, sunscreen, sunglasses, a small towel or old washcloth and a gallon size plastic bag. A pair of split ring pliers can be a great asset as well. Designate a place for stowing extra swivels, split rings and hooks such as siwash and trebles. When it comes to picking items for my trays I take into consideration the vast choices I have in today’s market. With so many sizes, shapes and color patterns offered it can be difficult to limit yourself so let’s start off with the “must haves” and go from there. Heavy iron for big lings and trophy rockfish should be a staple in your first by Cal Kellogg tray. Bright chrome hex or diamond bars in 4 to 8 ounces will get the job done. MAR. 29 - APR. 12 • 2013 25 In my light box I make sure to have an assortment of curly tail grubs, spoons, scampi tails and shrimp flies. This box is the one that contains items that I will use to augment my other lures or to rig above my heavier gear as a teaser. I also like to stash away some corkscrew barrel swivels that I found through John Beath. It makes swapping out lures a breeze. One of the spoons I pack is always a white fish-shaped one in case I drop in a school of blue or black rockfish, and a white salmon hoochie can be hard to pass up as far as vermilion rockfish are concerned. A variety of 1 to 2 ounce lures can really be fun to break out in calm shallow water especially when you fish with a light outfit. Kastmasters fit the bill nicely as do Luhr-Jensen Crippled Herrings. I like to have a 50/50 combination of iron and plastics for those days when it’s a tough bite and you might have to finesse your presentation until you find what turns them on. As you sift through your choices when it comes to iron or plastics, make sure you have white or pearl and glow-in-the-dark as well as the darker colors. Root beer and motor oil are good solid standbys. Cabezon are often found while fishing for rockfish. They are fond of anything similar to crustaceans and mollusks and they will hit swimbaits as well. Store your selections carefully watching out for color bleeding with plastics especially chartreuse and pink. Still have some room in your tackle box or bag? Toss in a Sumo Tackle rod holder. This product allows you to secure your rod to the rail with ease and I often wrap my towel corner into is as well so I can keep my hands clean. Another handy item to have is a small lighter. I’ve been able to “weld” a torn swimbait back together or refresh the shine to a dull one by fanning it over the flame. A tube of instant glue can help cement plastics to leadheads but be sure to keep it in its own separate container to prevent leakage. Keep in mind that old iron or torpedo weights can be spruced up by adding a skirt and attaching a fresh hook. Now here’s where the plastic bag comes into play… Once you have finished with a lure stow it in the bag for rinsing later so you don’t contaminate your dry gear. Remember rust never sleeps! VOL. 32 • ISS. 8 MAR. 29 - APR. 12 • 2013 SALTWATER JOURNAL 27 Deck Boss Bibs: So Far So Good! by Cal Kellogg I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…One of the best parts of my job is getting to try out the latest and greatest fishing and outdoor gear available. Much of the stuff that comes my way is good, some of it is great like fluorocarbon leaders, spectra braid and Pautzke Fire Bait and some of it doesn’t make much sense at all… In 2012, I came across something that may make its way onto my Great Gear List…right now I’d rate the product as Very Good. I’m talking about my Grundens Deck Boss bibs. This is what some PR guy at Grunden’s wrote about them… “We designed the Deck-Boss bib to withstand the abrasion of wire, barnacles, scallops, rock, concrete and steel better than any commercial product on the market today. The fabric is waterproof and breathable but the most important feature is its durability. These bibs will not clean as easily as PVC but they will wear like iron. If your work environment cuts normal bibs to shreds you owe it to yourself to give the Deck-Boss a try.” Now these are pretty bold assertions and I’ve got to say I was skeptical. I’m a heavy bib guy and I’ve always worn either thick rubber Grundens or Helly Hansens. These bibs are virtually indestructible and keep you warm and dry and since they don’t breath, when the sun hits you or when you are fighting a big fish they can also make you hot and sweaty. So not only do you look like a “real” man wearing the rubber bibs, by the end of the day you’ll smell like one too…or at least that’s what my wife tells me! Another knock against traditional heavy bibs is that they are HEAVY and difficult to pack when destination fishing. The idea of lightweight raingear is wonderful to contemplate, but I could not wrap my mind around any “lightweight” bibs being as tough as my old school rubberized stuff. Well time marches forward. Those dang horseless carriages have really caught on, so maybe the folks at Grundens had made a break through in the area of lightweight high performance foul weather gear. What the heck…I took a chance and ordered a pair last year. I’ve worn the bibs extensively while fishing in both wet weather and dry cold weather. I’ve worn them deer hunting during heavy rain and I did several multi hour hikes in them during fall storms this year while training. Overall the bibs have exceeded all of my expectations. They are extremely light and they breathe. Will you sweat in them? Of course you will, but you won’t sweat as much as you would in traditional bibs and when your activity level slows your clothes will actually dry under the Deck Boss bibs. In dry conditions the bibs do a great job of blocking heat stealing wind. I’ve worn them several times just to stay warm and they work great. I took a close look at my bibs this morning and despite heavy use they look to be in new condition save for some red clay staining around the cuffs where mud rubbed off on them from my rubber boots. I haven’t tried to get the red clay off and frankly I probably won’t. It’s rain gear. The stains will either wash off or they won’t. I just want the bibs to shed water. The one thing you should know about these bibs is that from my perspective they seem to run about a size small. My 2XLs fit pretty much like I’d expect an XL to fit, so take this in consideration if you do decide to order. At this point I can heartily endorse Grunden’s Deck Boss Bibs they are light, they keep you dry, they block the wind and they have shown virtually zero wear under vigorous use. I think they are the real deal! Here are the features of Deck Boss bibs as described on the Grunden’s website: “The bibs feature 2 inch elastic suspenders, cargo pocket, inside chest pocket, neoprene Buck’s Outboard Repair Company, located on 2750 47th cuffs with velcro cinch for snug fit around Avenue in Sacramento, is featuring an Arima closeout. boots, high cut for maximum chest All Arima Boats now in stock will be available at closeout protection. New Liberalized Recreational Groundfish Regulations Effective March 1 by Dan Bacher The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) recently annonceed several changes to recreational groundfish regulations that apply to state waters, zero to three miles from shore. Representatives of angling groups praised the changes – an expanded rockfish season in Mendocinco County, an increase in the bocaccio rockfish sublimit in the 10 fish rockfish complex bag limit to three fish and the ability now to keep shelf rockfish in the Cowcod Conservation Areas. The new recreational regulations were adopted by the Fish and Game Commission and took effect March 1, 2013. The open season dates and allowable fishing depths for the recreational Groundfish Management Areas are as follows: • Northern – open May 15 through Oct. 31, in 20 fathoms (120 feet) or less. • Mendocino – open May 15 through Labor Day, in 20 fathoms (120 feet) or less. • San Francisco – open June 1 through Dec. 31, in 30 fathoms (180 feet) or less. • Central- open May 1 through Dec. 31, in 40 fathoms (240 feet) or less. • Southern – open 1 through Dec.Star 31, inNor 50 fathoms Morning Star Nor March 10-26-12:Morning 10-14-11 (300 feet) or less. Additionally, anglers will now have the ability to retain shelf rockfish while fishing inside the Cowcod Conservation Areas (CCAs) in waters shallower than 20 fathoms. “Department staff worked closely with the public for more than four years to implement this change,” said Marci Yaremko, State/Federal Fisheries Program Manager. “Allowing retention of shelf rockfish inside the CCAs when the groundfish season is open will reduce discarding without impacting cowcod. It also simplifies regulations by allowing shelf rockfish take and retention both inside and outside the CCAs.” Take and possession of bronzespotted rockfish, canary rockfish, cowcod and yelloweye rockfish will remain prohibited statewide, according to Yaremko. Other changes to regulations pertain to bocaccio rockfish and include: • An increase in the sub-bag limit to three fish within the 10fish Rockfish, Cabezon, Greenling (RCG) complex bag limit. • Removal of the minimum size limit and fillet length limit. Jim Martin, West Coast Regional Director of the Recreational Fishing Alliance and president of the Mendocino County Fish and Game Advisory Commission and president of the Salmon Restoration Council, welcomed the easing of the restrictions. “As fish species rebuild, we will get more relaxed fishing restrictions,” saidPM Martin. “There are more bocaccio now, 10/16/12 4:18 Page 1 accounting for the more liberal three fish sub-limits, and lingcod came off the overfished list a couple of years ago. Canary and yelloweye numbers are also increasing.” “The extended season in Mendocino is great,” said Martin. “Because we have abundant populations of overfished species, our seasons in the Fort Bragg area are very short, paradoxically. It’s the case of the rebuilding paradox. The areas where you find the most overfished species coastwide are the ones are that are closed, according to the current provisions of the Sign up Magnusen-Stevens Act.” For over a decade, anglers have had to abide by the for our Email strict regulations of the longest defacto marine protected Newsletter! area in the world, the Rockfish Conservation Zones. The massive marine protected area extends along the entire California coast from the Oregon to the Mexican border. The Okuma Andros was born from a total commitment to maximizing the fishing experience within applications defined by 15- to 40-pound line. Anticipating the use of braided lines, every aspect of Andros’ two-speed design has been optimized to deliver capability commonly reserved for reels twice its’ size: from drag power to line capacity, from greased Carbonite drag, to Andros’ minimal frame rise above the spool. The payoff? Fitting in the palm of your hand, Andros eliminates the bulk that deadens the connection between angler and fish. As a result you’re more agile. You feel everything. You experience more of every encounter. Paired with an Andros Jigging rod, the Andros two-speed turns heads both above and below the water’s surface with forward-thinking design and exhilarating power. Here are just a few features of the Andros 5II: a gear ratio of 6.4:1 or 3.8:1, 6-pcs ABEC-5 rated EZO Japanese ball bearings, External adjustable cast control system, Ratchet drag lever for precise drag settings. Ergo grip handle knob with anodized aluminum handle arm. 17-4 grade stainless steel helical cut gearing. And integrated recessed reel foot design for low profile rod fit. VOL. 32 • ISS. 8 SALTWATER JOURNAL MAR. 29 - APR. 12 • 2013 29 Apex Trolling Lures: Big Fish Baits For Norcal Anglers! by Cal Kellogg The rig was nothing special. Long powerful rod, smooth high-speed high capacity reel spooled with 65 braid coming down to a copper sinker release. I snapped a massive 4 pound lead cannon ball to the release….The braid and reel were pretty modern, but in essence my gear wasn’t much different from the old school trolling gear used on Norcal charter boats 50 years ago. At the rear of the release I ran a 6 foot long 30 pound test fluorocarbon leader. The fluorocarbon being a modern upgrade to the traditional mono that was the standard for decades. On the end of the leader I’d threaded on a watermelon pattern No. 5 Apex and rigged it with a large barbless hook connected to the end of the leader via a bead chain swivel. To top everything off I pinned a small strip of anchovy fillet on the hook. The salmon were holding deep and acting fickle. I’d spent the last two hours trolling rigged anchovies and herring without a strike. Worse still rigged bait had only produced three keepers and a couple fish hooked and lost for the 20 plus anglers aboard. I was hoping that showing them something different would draw a strike or two. That’s why I reached for the Apex. It was a lure I’d been carrying around with me for a few years, but had never actually used. I knew the lure in the watermelon color had a reputation of being a real fish killer. I was about to find out… I striped the Apex down 90 pulls, put the rod into the holder and turned my back to it as I walk toward the cabin for a soda. Presently I heard the reel’s clicker scream and three or four anglers jumped forward excitedly pointing toward the back corner. I spun around and was greeted by the sight of my rod going crazy in the holder! When I got to the rod, I had a difficult time wrenching it free of the holder…I couldn’t believe it. I’d been trolling bait all morning without a sniff and within 30 seconds of putting the Apex in the water I was hooked up! The fish was very active and put up a great fight as it took me back and forth across the transom. In the end lady luck smiled on me and I was able to lead the beautiful 14 pound king into the net. But the day wasn’t over for the Apex. With my first keeper in the box I proceeded to put a 9 pounder into the box about a half hour later. When the rod went off a third time I passed it off to the guy fishing next to me that was vacationing from Germany. He landed a king of about 12 pounds. Clearly the salmon wanted the Apex. A few anglers had some Apex Lures and the deckhand broke out a few more. We didn’t come close to limiting out the boat, but we did head in with 18 respectable salmon in the box for just over 20 anglers. Apex lures accounted for at least a dozen of the fish landed and turned a horrible day of salmon fishing into a pretty decent one! It’s results like these that make the Apex an indispensable lure for both saltwater salmon anglers and freshwater anglers that target landlocked kings, kokanee and trout. If you’ve never used a Apex, your first thought might be that they are a little whacky looking….”Come On! You’re telling me that this weird little wing shaped piece of plastic will catch fish?” Yep, that’s what I’m telling you and I’ll go even further and state for the record that the Apex is one of the very best big trout and salmon lures that you can tie on your line! I do a great deal of ocean salmon fishing every year and I love hitting the trout and kokanee lakes that dot the foothills. As you can imagine in any given year I run a lot of lures and baits, but when I’m looking for big fish or when the fish are playing hard to get the three things I run most consistently are rigged bait (mainly worms and shad for trout and herring and anchovies for ocean kings), Fish Sniffer Editor Dan Bacher caught his largest ocean king Apex Lures and Rapalas. of the 2012 season on a watermelon pattern No. 6 Apex. When you start trolling Apex Lures there is one thing Photo by CAL KELLOGG, Fish Sniffer Staff. you’ll want to keep in mind. Set your trolling speed based on the action of lure in the water. Apexes tend to work best when trolled fairly fast. You want the action to be erratic. That’s what Capt. Erik Anfinson Gift triggers the strikes. Certificates Apex Lures come in a broad range of sizes and colors. Match the size of the lure to the fish your Available! are targeting. There are trout and kokanee models available that are size appropriate. For ocean kings the A5 and A6 are pretty standard, but the 6.25 inch A7 produces well when the salmon want something substantial. My advice is to stick to HALIBUT • STRIPED BASS • ROCKFISH • ALBACORE the basics and if you have a favorite lure color 3117 Trips Depart 6:30 am • Fisherman’s Wharf already, by all means get an Apex with a similar finish. All of a sudden the strike comes and a big fish is on the line. It’s the moment of truth! Unfortunately the angler just doesn’t have the arm and upper body strength to control the rod. The rod keeps rolling over under load, the angler stops reeling and the line goes slack. At this point someone else generally takes over fighting the fish, gives the angler a hand keeping the rod under control or the fish shakes the hook loose and is gone forever. Recently a product hit the market the can help give anglers with a small stature or limited strength an edge when it comes to controlling the rod when there is a big strong fish at the other end. The product is called Mike’s Reel Arm. Mike’s Reel Arm is an adjustable stabilizer that mounts beneath the reel and extends out to one side such that you can use it to brace against your forearm. This puts leverage on your side and just like that you can now control your rod when it’s under load. No more flipping over, no more helping hands and no more lost fish! Pro-Troll makes 24 finishes of the E-Lure. The most popular are the Watermelon, the Police Car and the Chrome Scale. All the E-Lures include the electronic EChip. Pro-Troll also makes a full line of conventional flashers. Conventional flashers catch more salmon every year than any other device because their powerful kicking and spinning vibrations attract salmon to your bait or lure. The two most popular models are the eleven inch Hotchip If you are after big salmon, Pro-Troll has you covered. Bait holders, lures and flashers are your key to success. Pro-Troll makes them all and specializes in top quality salmon gear. Its products dominate much of the salmon market because they catch more salmon. The new spinning SpinRay8 flasher is the company’s latest. It is eight inches long, shaped like a fish and has double bend spin blades at the rear. The blade is ProTroll’s custom super ultraviolet for extra glow. There are nine finishes including plaids and colored fish scales. 3202 These flashers work very well tied immediately behind a sinker release and they also work well as an attractor tied off of the cannon ball on a downrigger. Since they only spin, they have very little drag and they don’t tangle your gear. With the addition of Pro-Troll bait holders and E-Lures, your tackle box can be near complete. For the last 20 years, California salmon fishermen have consistently landed more and bigger salmon using the Pro-Troll Rotary Salmon Killer. It comes in eight finishers with the most popular being chartreuse, green, red and clear. An alternate to the Rotary is the Roto Chip bait holder. It is spring loaded, comes with two tandem 5/0 barbless hooks and also contains the Pro-Troll EChip The Ultimate 150 hp 4 stroke. The new electronic attractor. Ahi Assault Diamond Jigs Are The Answer! by Cal Kellogg Back when I was young and poor, I experimented with making my own low cost jigs out of things like iron rebar and sections of heavy pipe. I caught fish on these offerings and I convinced myself that my homemade jigs were just as good as the store bought variety. Well, looking back I must have been fishing in the waters of the Denial Bay, because there is no way my cumbersome clumsy garage jigs performed as well as the chrome plated hex jigs that adorned the walls of coastal bait shops back in the ‘80’s. Fast forward to the present day and there are a lot of anglers that believe the hex bars and primitive diamond jigs they used in the ‘80’s are just as good as the sleek sexy premium quality jigs that have emerged in recent years…Welcome to Denial Bay fellas! On a day in day out basis, those old diamond and hex bars don’t hold a candle to the new generation of jigs. Today’s premium quality jigs feature tapered lifelike shapes, outstanding finishes and top quality hardware. Throughout the ‘90’s the first thing I did when I brought a new hex bar home was to cut off the hook and any hardware and replace it with my own hook ‘n hardware, because generally the hardware that came attached to the jig was pure junk…Those days are long gone! I’m a self-proclaimed jig fishing junky and I’ve tried most of the latest and greatest jigs on today’s market. They will all catch fish, but from my observations when it comes to metal bar style jigs, the Ahi Assault Diamond series of jigs from the folks at American Maple/Ahi USA stands head and shoulders above the rest when you consider quality, cost and performance. Ahi Assault Jigs are available in weights ranging from 4 to 14 ounces, so you’ll be able to find the perfect size jig for any situation you encounter off the California coast. In terms of colors they offer all of my favorites such as straight silver, silver/blue, • Cont. on Page 35 GOLDENEYE 2000 56’ High Speed Stable Catamaran Halibut•Stripers•Rockcod Call Call for for CRAB CRAB COMBOS! Schallenberger’s fish measured 14-5/16 inches, narrowly beating Justin Morris’ two-pound three-ounce black perch that measured 13-15/16 inches. Morris took second in the Senior Division and was followed by local Matt Michie who took third place with his two-pound one-ounce black perch, also caught while using bait in Monterey. “Experience obviously counts, as all three of these winners have taken trophies home from previous Sand Crab Classic derbies,” commented Baxter, who skippered the Wild Wave and other charter boats out of Santa Cruz for rockfish, lingcod, salmon, halibut and albacore for years before going to work in the insurance industry. “This year we saw a few new faces as well as some very Jennifer Valentine of Watsonville placed first in the Women’s Division of the Sand Crab Classic with her black perch just shy of 2 pounds. Photo by DAN BACHER, Fish Sniffer Staff. familiar contestants on the trophy stand.” Jennifer Valentine, who caught her black perch off Monterey on a bloodworm, took the Women’s Division this year. Valentine’s perch was just two ounces shy of two pounds. The second and third place winners were fishing with Valentine and Schallenberger with bloodworms in the same area. Trish McGrath placed second with a 1 lb. 12 oz striped perch measuring 13-3/4 inches and Kira Eccleston finished third with a 1lb. 12 oz. black perch going 12-7/8 inches. Since the two fish were tied in weight, the fish with the longest length won. The Youth Division first-place trophy went to Matthew Jimenez this year who weighed in a beautiful one-pound seven-ounce striped perch. Matthew was fishing a bloodworm off Monterey with Tony and Paul Jimenez and Trish McGrath when he landed the fish. The second place winner was Anthony Padua with a 1 pound 5 oz. calico perch taken on a grub off San Gregorio. Samara Cortazzo placed third with a 1 lb. striped perch fooled with mussels along the West Cliffs in Santa Cruz. Kevin Quant, who caught a two-pound one-ounce barred beauty at Rio Del Nar Beach while using a grub, captured the coveted “Biggest Barred Surf Perch” trophy. Two anglers won trophies in the “Most Exotic Fish” division. Mary Grace Knepper landed a jackmselt in Monterey while using a pileworm. Chris Fenk also landed an opaleye, a fish common to Southern Califronia waters, while tossing out on a pileworm. Nobody took a fish on a fly this year, so the “fly fishing division” award went to Bryan Servel, who landed his barred perch while fishing with bait on a fly rod. Every year Baxter awards a trophy to one angler who comes in late. This year it was Niyan Daglow, who came with her dad, Aaron, all of the way from Richmond to weigh in her barred perch taken on shrimp at Point Isabel on San Francisco Bay. All winners went home with trophies and new rod and reel combos. In addition the raffle and silent auction ensured nearly everyone captured a prize, even if they may not have caught a fish for the derby. The species weighed in the derby included barred, black, striped, rainbow, rubberlipped, walleye and silver perch. The nearly $5,000 raised in the event went to one of the top fishery conservation groups in the state, the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project (MBSTP). Founded in 1976, the MBSTP is a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and enhancement of the native salmon and steelhead populations of the greater Monterey Bay area. The organization’s operations include: Coho Salmon and Steelhead: The MBSTP operates a hatchery and rearing facility to supplement natural production that has been reduced due to habitat degradation. This year the project will be releasing 19,000 steelhead pre smolts into the San Lorenzo River and 3,200 steelhead pre smolts into Scott Creek. The project will also plant Scott Creek with 45,000 juvenile coho salmon, according to Mark Galloway, hatchery manager.
