From the Principal
As we head into the final three weeks of Term 1, I would like to remind all parents
and caregivers about our Voluntary Contributions for 2016. These contributions
have been ratified by the ESPS Board and allow the school to run enriched
programs across all subject learning areas. The $50 per student goes straight into
the school class expenditure to ensure targeted, innovative lessons in all of these
learning areas. At the moment, we have less than 30% of our student population
who have paid this contribution. This means that there is the potential for a further $13 800 that could be
used towards classroom resources if everyone was able to contribute. Please think about the voluntary
contributions when you visit the front office in the future. We are keen to maintain a high quality of education
for your children and enhance the learning experiences with vital educational resources that are purchased
using this money. Thank you.
ESPS SCHOOL BOARD
The Ellen Stirling Primary School Board had its first meeting last Wednesday and ratified the wet weather
and hot weather school policies. They also ratified the ‘Annual School Report 2015’ which is now available
in limited quantities from the front office and in electronic form on the ‘Schools Online’ section of the
Department of Education WA website.
The School Board has elected members to work with the school and community to achieve the best
outcomes for students. The Board has established a vision for the school that reflects the aspirations and
needs of the community through the ESPS Business Plan. The Board has an important influence on the
direction of the school, with members bringing ideas and lending their expertise to strategic planning and
community partnerships. Thank you to each member of the Board for your time and effort.
The School Board currently consists of eight members. (three staff and five parents) The board would like to
seek expressions of interest for parent or community representatives who may be interested in joining our
School Board as we seek to increase numbers across both staff and parent representations. For more
information, please email Michelle Ward, School Board Chair at ward.fam5@bigpond.com or Dr Dean
Goldspink, Principal at Dean.Goldspink@education.wa.edu.au

ATTENTION DADS AND OTHER MALE ROLE MODELS!
The ESPS DADs are hosting their first formal 'Dads Only' event
tonight Wednesday, 23 March at The Valley Bowls Club, Ellenbrook
from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. The event will provide male role models with a
chance to catch up informally for some laughs, a free BBQ and the
chance to win a range of great prizes whilst sharing ideas for engaging
their own children in fun activities. The event is going to be a huge
success with a large number of male role models registering their intent
to attend in support of this exciting initiative. Ellen Stirling Primary School is proud to be associated with a
group of such dedicated individuals and we look forward to the next phase of the project, a 'Kids and Dads
Only' activity that is currently being planned by the ESPS DADs. Thank you to all of the men who have given
up their own time to be a part of this project to date.

Please ensure children have bathers, towel, t-shirt, underwear, a change of
clothing and shoes and socks, so that they are not sitting in their wet
bathers all day. If you have a daughter who has two-piece bathers (bikini)
please ensure she has a rash shirt or t-shirt to swim in. Children will travel
to the pool in their bathers and return in their dry clothes. Children may
wear thongs/sandals to the pool, but need to wear regular, appropriate
school footwear whilst at school. Please clearly name ALL your child’s
belongings including towels, bags and goggles.
Parents may attend the lessons as spectators, but we have been advised
by Swan Park that parents will have to pay a spectator admission charge of
$2.00 per day.
SWIMMING LESSONS
This time next week we will be swimming! Thank you to all our parents, staff
and students who have helped to get the forms and money back on time. A
quick reminder to parents to please remember to label all your child's
belongings. Also parents are more than welcome to come and spectate,
there is a $2-00 charge payable, there is no photography allowed at the
pool.
FITNESS CLUB
This Thursday is our last fitness club for the term. Thank you to everyone
that has been part of it and made it such a great success! We will be back
next term with Running Club!

from Western Australian Rugby League. We have had Fletcher, Bailey and Gus who play for
the Pirates, taking the kids through the basics of Rugby, including passing and game play.
Anyone interested in playing rugby in Ellenbrook should contact the Ellenbrook Rabbitohs via
their website ellenbrookrabbitohs.com.

Ellenbrook Arts Bushland
Bushland Project
This term students were given the opportunity to participate in the Ellenbrook Arts Project with
the theme 'Drawing from the Bush'. Students were extremely lucky to have Ecologist Mandy
Bamford, a flora and fauna expert, visit the school. She bought along natural bushland items
such as Banksia cones, leaves, gum nuts and even live animals such as a Western Bearded
Dragon, a Bobtail Skink and various small lizards. Sharing her knowledge of threatened
species, students were then asked to create artworks focusing on this theme. Students’
artwork will be on display in the Ellenbrook Art Gallery, located at 34 Main Street Ellenbrook,
from 23 March until 1 May 2016.

Year 6 Dieback Excursion
Recently this term, the Year 6 classes participated in an out of school activity to learn about the protection of our native flora and the prevention of
the fungus, Phytophthora Cinnamomi, commonly known as Dieback. Making the experience all the more personal, the excursion took place at
Grassdale Reserve here in Ellenbrook. This excursion was part of the Science classroom studies. The day’s activities included an informative
presentation from an Environmental Officer from Murdoch University. The students then had the opportunity to perform treatment of native
vegetation to prevent the Dieback disease. The Year 6 students at Ellen Stirling Primary have been proud of their close affiliation with the Dieback
Working Group and Murdoch University for the past six years, and their assistance with this treatment program in areas such as Whiteman Park and
various reserves located in Ellenbrook, has been a very worthwhile project.
Election Round Up
During Term 1, the Year 6 students have been extremely busy with elections for Prefects, Faction Captains and Sustainability Rangers. Students
had to nominate for their positions and then give speeches in front of the voters – the Year 4 to Year 6 students. This meant that those who
nominated for Prefect positions delivered their speeches to approximately 270 people – a fantastic achievement! Students learnt about preferential
and first past the post voting and we were grateful for the assistance given by Mr Nigel Bushby from the WA Electoral Commission. Congratulations
to all students involved – over fifty different Year 6 students nominated for a position. The final results were:
Head Girl – Alyssa Lothian
Head Boy – Sam Pascoe
Prefects – Ellie Cole, Jessica Vincent, Ellie Morland, Ethan Norman, Jordan Reith and Joshua Macdonald.
Faction Captains:
