program - Innovation Takes Root
A Collaborative Biopolymers Forum for the Global Ingeo Community Orlando, FL I February 17-19, 2014 Orlando World Center Marriott www.innovationtakesroot.com 2 to Innovation Takes Root! Among the forums held since the first event in 2008, Innovation Takes Root 2014 (ITR) stands at the beginning of the second decade of commercial production for Ingeo. While in some ways we’re still the “new kid on the block,” this milestone reflects a growing maturity for the company, Ingeo, channel partners, and end users. New since ITR 2012 The Blair, Nebraska Ingeo production facility expanded volume and capabilities. The plant now produces a range of new high performance resins and lactide intermediates. NatureWorks has reorganized how it serves market segments. The company now brings additional commercial focus and technical resources to the needs of customers in such segments as rigid packaging, food serviceware, films, fibers and nonwovens, durables, and lactide intermediates. NatureWorks has also created a business incubator function to best serve new business opportunities such as 3D printing, toners, and building and construction, to name a few. The company progressed substantive programs against its long-standing goal of feedstock diversification. In 2013, NatureWorks kicked off the front end engineering work for its Southeast Asia plant which will transform sugarcane-based sucrose feedstocks. In addition, the company formalized and started investment in a multiyear joint development program that, if successful, will bring structural simplification to the Ingeo supply chain, enabling the direct conversion of GHG sources such as methane to lactic acid. Assessment of cellulosic sugars from locally abundant materials such as sugar cane to sugars, and wood chips continues. The channel to market is maturing as well as providing new blends, additives, and processing equipment. Research and development opens new applications especially when utilizing the high performance resin grades and lactide intermediates. All of these developments in one form or another will be part of ITR. One thing that has not changed between the first and second decade is the enthusiasm and interest in Ingeo. That eagerness will be evident during every presentation and hospitality event. Thank you for coming, and please have a pleasant and fruitful experience at Innovation Takes Root 2014. Sincerely, Marc Verbruggen President and Chief Executive Officer NatureWorks marc_verbruggen@natureworksllc.com 3 Sunday - February 16 5:00pm - 7:00pm Registration Open Grand Registration Desk Monday - February 17 6:30am - 5:30pm Registration Open Grand Registration Desk 9:00am Morning Workshop Grand Ballroom 1-2 Practical Tools for Characterizing & Understanding Product Performance in Biopolymers 1:00pm Afternoon Workshop Grand Ballroom 3-4 6:00pm 8:00pm Welcome Reception Falls Pool Terrace Biopolymers - Navigating the Global Regulatory Landscape Sponsored by DaniMer Scientific Tuesday - February 18 7:00am 4 Registration Open Grand Registration Desk Breakfast Sponsored by Eco-Products Grand Ballroom 9-14 8:00am Plenary Session Grand Ballroom 8 8:00am Keynote Speaker Jim Carroll, Futurist, Trends & Innovation Expert 9:00am The Journey Toward a Sustainable Material Allan Rasmussen, LEGO System A/S 9:30am Brand Owner’s Approach to Innovation for Sustainability thru Partnerships Ravinder Reddy, Unilever 10:00am ISCC PLUS Certification - Opportunities for Biobased Materials Andreas Feige, ISCC System GmbH 10:30am Exhibit Space Open & Networking Break Grand Ballroom 7 11:00am Bioplastics - The Thai Perspective Kittiphong Limsuwannarot, PTT Global Chemical 11:30am Innovation for Sustainability Gayle Schueller, 3M Welcome & Introduction: Peter Clydesdale, NatureWorks Moderator: Jim Nangeroni, NatureWorks #ITR2014 Tuesday - February 18 (continued) 12:00pm Lunch Grand Ballroom 9-14 2:00pm Market Focus Sessions Broadening the Application Space for Ingeo Films Expanding the Focus in Rigid Packaging New Markets - 3D Printing and Beyond Grand Ballroom 3-4 Grand Ballroom 5-6 Grand Ballroom 1-2 Moderator: David Stanton NatureWorks Moderator: Richard Bopp NatureWorks Moderator: Brad Rodgers, PepsiCo 2:00pm Two Decades of Ingeo Film Product Development Jim Nangeroni NatureWorks The Myth of the Silver Bullet Katherine O’Dea GreenBlue Opportunities for Green Building Materials in the LEED v4 Rating System Ashley A. Renewable Materials for IT Applications There is an enormous opportunity to replace petroleum-based thermoplastics with renewable blends in the IT industry. Initial efforts have focused on blends of PLA with polycarbonate. Several candidate materials have been successfully qualified at both the part and system level. Implementation of these blends in existing applications has been hampered by cost-driven issues despite the modest material cost increase. Consequently, implementation will occur on the next generation systems where cost neutrality is not as critical. Both the technical and business challenges that must be overcome to affect this paradigm shift in the electronics industry will be discussed. Come hear what manufacturers are doing with the newly commercialized Ingeo high performance grades as well as learn how material properties are being optimized to allow enhanced capabilities in new applications. The session will be culminate with a presentation from NatureWorks’ most experienced material scientist sharing his thoughts on where these new capabilities may take the industry. 25 Dick Lilly Manager, Waste Prevention and Product Stewardship Seattle Public Utilities Mr. Lilly has been the Manager for Waste Prevention and Product Stewardship for Seattle Public Utilities since 2009. During that time he has guided legislation and program development for Seattle’s ban on expanded polystyrene food packaging that requires all single-use food serviceware and packaging to be either compostable or recyclable. Biopolymers have thus become a key solution provider in this region. Dick has also been involved with Seattle’s yellow pages opt-out service and the ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags. He also serves as SPU’s representative on the Northwest Product Stewardship Council’s steering committee and sits on NWPSC’s policy, packaging and paint committees. How Innovation in Single-Use Food Packaging is Taking Seattle Toward Zero Waste Seattle is often cited as a poster child of the move towards compostable food serviceware. In this presentation, Lilly goes beyond a review of what happened, and drills into what it took to make it happen – the challenges that had to be addressed along the way, and critically, what remains to be done, how the city is working towards cleaner recycling and compost streams, and what Seattle looks for from the industry in order to fully implement its single-use foodservice packaging regulations.
